TIANJIN, June 8 (Xinhua) — The floating central processing platform (FCP) of the first phase of the Kenli 10-2 oil field development project has been successfully installed, breaking records in both size and weight for offshore oil and gas platform installations in the Bohai Sea region, Tianjin-based Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd., announced Sunday.

The central processing platform is a three-layer, eight-legged multifunctional offshore structure that integrates production and domestic facilities. This offshore oil and gas platform, 22.8 m high and with a design weight of over 20,000 tons, is the heaviest and largest in the Bohai Sea.

During the platform installation operation, the project team deployed three sets of Beidou positioning systems equipped with artificial intelligence algorithms on the main operating vessel, providing the installation with millimeter-level anti-collision radar.

Several tugs coordinated their efforts to steer the vessel, accurately installing the platform in a single attempt, setting a new record for installing large offshore oil and gas platforms in challenging sea conditions.

The Kenli 10-2 oil field is located in the southern waters of the Bohai Sea, approximately 245 km from Tianjin, where the average water depth is about 20 m. It is the largest lithological field discovered to date in China’s offshore areas, with proven geological reserves of over 100 million tons. -0-

Health Minister Nadda launches FSSAI’s ‘Stop Obesity’ campaign on World Food Safety Day 2025

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday addressed the World Food Safety Day 2025 event, themed “Stop Obesity by Eating Safe and Healthy,” held at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. Organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the event emphasized the critical role of food safety and nutrition in combating obesity and non-communicable diseases.

The event saw the launch of FSSAI’s “Awareness Initiative to Stop Obesity” under the Eat Right India programme, aimed at raising nationwide awareness about the health risks of obesity. Nadda highlighted the alarming rise in obesity, citing the ICMR–India Diabetes (INDIAB) study, which reported a 39.6% increase in urban India and a 23.1% increase in rural areas between 2008 and 2020. He warned that by 2050, one-third of India’s population could be obese if current trends persist.

“For a Viksit Bharat, a healthy India is necessary, and that can be ensured through the right types of food, healthy food habits, and lifestyle,” Nadda said. He urged stakeholders to support the Prime Minister’s call to reduce oil consumption by 10% and emphasized the need to revive traditional foods like millets. He also stressed the vulnerability of children to unhealthy food marketing and called for early awareness to foster better dietary habits.

The campaign promotes inclusivity with communication materials in regional languages and sign language, alongside media outreach through FM radio, railway announcements, and digital platforms. Chief Justice, members of the Judiciary, Chairman of the Bar (Hong Kong Bar Association), President of the Law Society (Law Society of Hong Kong), fellow members of the legal profession, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

     On behalf of the Department of Justice, I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to the three new silks: Ms Catrina Lam, Ms Priscilia Lam and Mr Timothy Parker. Their appointments as Senior Counsel are undoubtedly well deserved.

     I have to confess that I had a mixed feeling upon seeing their names in the press release of the Judiciary. On the one hand, I noted at once that the family name of two of the appointees is “Lam” (林). I am, naturally, very proud and pleased that the “Lams” seem to be doing quite well in the legal field. Other prominent examples would include eminent members of the Judiciary such as Johnson Lam PJ and Godfrey Lam JA. On the other hand, I was a bit concerned that this is second year in a row that there are more female appointees than male!

     Catrina has a very successful practice mainly in the area of commercial and competition law. For those of you who know the Chinese names of Catrina and me, apart from having the same family name, the second character is also identical i.e. “定”. Very shortly after the Judiciary’s announcement, I received a WeChat message from a lawyer friend on the Mainland asking very seriously whether Catrina is my younger sister!

     Priscilia, as we all know, specialises in criminal law. The Department of Justice has instructed her to prosecute in many important criminal cases. When I was preparing this speech, I asked one of my colleagues in the Prosecution Division whether there is anything funny or interesting that I can say about Priscilia. To my disappointment, the answer that I received is that “Sorry, I tried and tried, scratched my head, but I just can’t think of anything funny.” Perhaps I have not asked the right person. Anyhow, it is well known that Priscilia is very sporty; and is very good at kick boxing, snowboarding and wake surfing. At one point, I was very tempted to consult Zervos JA, who is, as we all know, the dear husband of Priscilia, on the level of her kick boxing skills as he might have some first-hand experience but, on reflection, that did not appear to be a good idea at all!

     As to Timothy, he has a general civil practice and is particularly recognised for his expertise in public law and constitutional matters. I was told that his son, Graham, was born last month. So, coupled with his appointment as Senior Counsel, this is what we would say in Chinese: “雙喜臨門”, double happiness.

     Apart from today’s ceremony, there were two other significant legal events in the past week or so. First, last Wednesday, the Legislative Council approved the appointment of Sir William Young, an eminent former judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, as a foreign non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal. Second, about a week ago on May 30, 33 countries including China signed the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong. Representatives from around other 40 countries and 20 international organisations also attended the ceremony. These encouraging developments demonstrate that Hong Kong’s status as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre is strongly supported and acknowledged by our country and the international community.

     Hong Kong’s success in this respect so far is attributed to our common law system, which is indeed one of the most important and distinctive advantages enjoyed by Hong Kong under the principle of “one country, two systems”. While we must do our best to preserve and enhance the essential features and core values of our common law system, it is vital not to overlook many challenges ahead. Senior Counsel, as leaders of our strong and independent bar, are expected and required to play proactive and leading roles in overcoming these challenges. For the present purpose, I would like to mention three of them.

The first challenge is how to use technological innovations to promote efficiency, but without compromising the integrity, of judicial proceedings. I wish to quote from an English decision handed down yesterday in Ayinde, R (On the Application of) v Qatar National Bank QPSC & Anor [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin) “Artificial intelligence is a tool that carries with it risks as well as opportunities. Its use must take place therefore with an appropriate degree of oversight, and within a regulatory framework that ensures compliance with well-established professional and ethical standards if public confidence in the administration of justice is to be maintained… In the context of legal research, the risks of using artificial intelligence are now well known. Freely available generative artificial intelligence tools, trained on a large language model such as ChatGPT are not capable of conducting reliable legal research. Such tools can produce apparently coherent and plausible responses to prompts, but those coherent and plausible responses may turn out to be entirely incorrect. The responses may make confident assertions that are simply untrue. They may cite sources that do not exist. They may purport to quote passages from a genuine source that do not appear in that source. Those who use artificial intelligence to conduct legal research notwithstanding these risks have a professional duty therefore to check the accuracy of such research…There are serious implications for the administration of justice and public confidence in the justice system if artificial intelligence is misused. In those circumstances, practical and effective measures must now be taken by those within the legal profession with individual leadership responsibilities (such as heads of chambers and managing partners) and by those with the responsibility for regulating the provision of legal services. Those measures must ensure that every individual currently providing legal services within this jurisdiction (whenever and wherever they were qualified to do so) understands and complies with their professional and ethical obligations and their duties to the court if using artificial intelligence.” It is clear that these important remarks apply equally to Hong Kong.

     The second challenge is how to enhance the synergy between our common law system and the Mainland legal system under the principle of “one country, two systems”. To maintain Hong Kong’s unique attractiveness as a “super connector” and “super value-adder” between China and the rest of the world in the provision of legal and dispute resolution services, it is essential to review, and improve on, the existing mutual legal assistance arrangements in civil and commercial matters continuously. All of them are concerned with either judicial or arbitration proceedings in which counsel are usually heavily involved. On the other hand, there is a huge and growing demand on the Mainland for capacity building on international legal practice. A good recent example is the Legal Services Forum, which included a mock arbitration, held in Xi’an about two weeks ago in late May, which was attended by a large number of Mainland lawyers not just from Shaanxi but many other neighbouring provinces and regions in Western China. One of the most sought-after topics in these capacity building programmes is the skill and etiquette of oral advocacy, which is something that Senior Counsel are renowned for.

     The third challenge is to maintain Hong Kong’s international image regarding its rule of law. We have to face the music. For whatever reasons, many people outside Hong Kong do not have a proper and complete understanding of the present state of the rule of law, and the actual operation of our legal and judicial systems, in Hong Kong. Nowadays, perception is reality. A negative perception, no matter how misplaced, is liable to impair people’s trust and confidence in Hong Kong as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre. Senior Counsel, owing to their status as respectable and independent legal professionals as well as skillful advocates, are best positioned to tell the good and true story of Hong Kong in this regard.

     These challenges must, of course, be overcome by different branches of the legal profession of Hong Kong together. But, as I said earlier and for reasons that I explained, it is reasonably expected that Senior Counsel, as an institution representing the cream of our profession, should take the lead to do so. I sincerely hope that the three new silks would join the efforts in this respect.

HONOLULU — The Waiawa Correctional Facility (WCF) hosted a graduation ceremony and luncheon for nine inmates who received Kapiʻolani Community College (KCC) Culinary Arts certificates Friday, June 6, 2025.

Honored guests that included Director Tommy Johnson of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, DCR Deputy Director Melanie Martin of the Administration Division, DCR Deputy Director Sanna Muñoz of the Rehabilitation Services and Programs Division, WCF Warden Sean Ornellas, DCR administrators, staff, Keiki O Ka ‘Āina Family Learning Centers, social service providers and the graduates’ family members and loved ones attended the event.

The graduates completed the Culinary Arts Program, a six-month, college-level program where students learn the fundamentals of culinary arts, time management, teamwork and other practical skills from KCC Culinary Arts instructor Lee Shinsato.

WCF Education Supervisor Kerry Iwashita said, “The purpose of the program is to provide knowledge, a pathway for a solid career in the restaurant industry.”

Iwashita commended the graduates for their achievement, noting that most of the men want to continue their education. For those who opt to further their education, the 14 credits earned from the Culinary Arts Program will appear in their University of Hawaiʻi transcripts.

During the ceremony, graduate Ronald Graham addressed attendees and thanked them for their support on behalf of his fellow graduates.

“Sometimes it takes a jarring experience in life for somebody to take life more seriously. When you guys offer opportunities like culinary arts to people in incarceration, you supply us with the strength, hope and determination we need to stay out of prison and make something of ourselves,” Graham said.

The Culinary Arts Program is also offered at the Women’s Community Correctional Center.

Previous graduates have entered the culinary arts industry or established their own catering business.

Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Director Tommy Johnson thanked the volunteer chefs who dedicated their time and talent teaching the students marketable skills.

“This program truly reflects the mission of the department: to rehabilitate those in our custody and help transform their lives. Programs such as Culinary Arts can lead them to a smooth and successful reentry into the community upon release,” Director Johnson said.

During the ceremony, KCC Culinary Arts Instructor Lee Shinsato applauded all the graduates for their hard work and dedication. “I’m really, really proud of you guys. You guys did a really good job,” Shinsato said.

What matters most, Shinsato said, is what the graduates’ achievements mean to themselves. “It shouldn’t matter to you that I’m proud of you. I can see it in you guys’ eyes that you are proud of yourselves, and I think that’s a big, big deal. You should really be proud of yourselves for what you’ve accomplished,” he added.

Showcasing their culinary arts skills, the graduates prepared the following savory dishes and sweet desserts for attendees at the luncheon:

MIL-Evening Report: The blow-up between Elon Musk and Donald Trump has been entertaining, but how did things go so bad, so fast?

A no-holds-barred and very public blow-up between the world’s richest man and the president of the United States has had social media agog in recent days, with each making serious accusations against the other.

And while tech billionaire Elon Musk appears to have cooled the spat somewhat – deleting some of his more incendiary social media posts about Donald Trump – the president still appears to be in no mood to make up, warning Musk of “very serious consequences” if he backs Democrats at the mid-term elections in 2026.

Tensions erupted over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB). The OBBB proposes extensive tax cuts which could add roughly US$3 trillion (A$4.62 trillion) to the US national debt.

After stepping down from his role as advisor to Trump, Musk criticised the OBBB as “disgusting abomination” that would “burden America [sic] citizens with crushing unsustainable debt”. Trump returned fire, suggesting “Elon was ‘wearing thin’, I asked him to leave […] and he just went CRAZY!”.

In a dramatic escalation, Musk responded by calling for Trump’s impeachment. Musk also tweeted allegations that Trump was implicated in the Epstein files related to child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He has since deleted those tweets.

Why has the much-hyped “bromance” between Musk and Trump suddenly ended? And what was the basis of their alliance in the first place?

Musk in politics

Like many billionaires, Musk had previously been hesitant to get involved in frontline politics. He says he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020, but claimed in 2021 “I would prefer to stay out of politics”.

In early 2024, Musk was still claiming to be politically non-aligned, suggesting he would not donate to either presidential campaign.

This apparent neutrality ended following the attempted assassination of Trump at a July 2024 campaign rally, with Musk immediately endorsing Trump.

In reality, Musk’s conversion to the MAGA movement long predated the assassination attempt. Musk’s hyperactive Twitter/X account shows a steady radicalisation.

Across 2020-2024, Musk engaged with accounts sharing MAGA and far-right conspiracy theories. These include the antisemitic Great Replacement Theory, and the related South African white genocide conspiracy. Musk’s posts also show the obsession with opposing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies characteristic of the MAGA movement.

After endorsing Trump, Musk spent US$288 million (A$444 million) supporting Trump’s election and appeared at campaign events around the country.

Musk’s support for Trump was both ideological and pragmatic.

From tax cuts to immigration restrictions to opposing DEI, there were clearly many ideological commonalities between Musk and Trump.

There were also clear practical benefits for both men. Trump gained the financial backing of the world’s wealthiest man. Musk gained not only unparalleled access to the US president, but also a role leading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

DOGE: success and failure

Early reporting on the second Trump presidency noted the omnipresence of Musk, who at one point moved into Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to be close to the president.

However, observers were sceptical about the potential effectiveness of DOGE, and Musk’s claim it would save the government US$2 trillion (A$3.02 trillion).

In the early months of the Trump administration, Musk cut government programs and employees at a remarkable rate. The USAID program was particularly hard hit, as were the Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

As the spending cuts picked up pace, Musk began to attract more controversy. Critics questioned the apparent power wielded by the unelected billionaire. Musk’s ties to the far right were also in the spotlight after he appeared to perform two “Roman salutes”, which many observers believed to be a Nazi salute.

Trump clips Musk’s wings

Musk’s apparent rampage through government did not last long. As Trump’s executive appointees assumed control of their departments, Musk and DOGE experienced increasing resistance. After a series of fractious cabinet meetings, Trump reportedly reduced the power of DOGE in March.

Political attention was also clearly affecting Musk’s businesses. The negative publicity has significantly damaged the Tesla brand, leading to declining sales around the world and repeated falls in Telsa’s share price.

On May 1, Musk announced he would be leaving DOGE, claiming the department had saved the government US$180 billion (A$277 billion) in spending. This number is likely an exaggeration, but still falls well short of his original target.

Musk has learned a harsh lesson in politics – that the complexities of government resist simple reform and cannot be easily rolled back in the way a CEO might slim down a company.

For Trump, his manoeuvring of Musk appears to be another smart political move. As the public face of DOGE, Musk bore the negative wrap for early government cuts and chaos. Having used his money and reputation, Trump dispensed with Musk as he has with so many advisers and appointees before.

The falling out

Musk departed his role in a muted White House ceremony, where Trump thanked him for his service and presented him with a ceremonial “golden key” to the White House.

However, behind the public show of civility, tension was brewing over Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

Trump and Musk had originally claimed that the US$2 trillion (A$3.02 trillion) in DOGE savings could be used to fund a substantial tax cut. With the efficiency savings not eventuating, Musk worried the OBBB would significantly increase US public debt.

Unable to convince Trump or other Republican legislators, Musk took to X, launching a “Kill the Bill” campaign that ultimately led to his incendiary showdown with Trump.

For his part, Trump has belittled Musk, suggesting Musk only opposed the OBBB because it cut subsidies for electric vehicles.

Though the subsidy cuts will affect Tesla, Musk has previously supported eliminating subsidies. Musk’s anger at the OBBB is more likely driven by the realisation he has been played by Trump.

What now?

Trump has used and discarded many other powerful figures in his chaotic political career. Musk has more power than most, and might be able to strike back at Trump.

Yet, with his public reputation and brands already tarnished, Musk would be ill-advised to pick further fights with Trump and his adoring MAGA movement.

Accordingly, Musk has indicated over the weekend he is open to a détente. Tesla investors will no doubt be relieved if Musk makes good on his pledge to step back from politics and return to his businesses.

More concerning are the prospects for democracy. With wealth and power continuing to concentrate in a handful of billionaires, voters appear reduced to the role of viewers forced to watch the reality TV drama unfold.

Though Trump appears to have won this round of billionaire battle royale, whatever happens next, democracy is the real loser.

MIL-OSI Russia: Automotive cooperation among RCEP members promotes green development

HEFEI, June 8 (Xinhua) — China and other member states of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) discussed low-carbon development issues, from new energy vehicles (NEVs) to common ideas for a green future, at a recent dialogue in Hefei, capital of east China’s Anhui Province.

The dialogue focused on NEVs and advanced photovoltaic production and supply chains, and demonstrated the growing commitment of RCEP member countries to promote sustainable development.

The dialogue was held as part of the RCEP 2025 Huangshan Regional Government and Sister City Cooperation Forum, which was held from June 4 to 6 and brought together about 300 participants from 15 countries that have joined the RCEP. A total of 27 agreements were signed, covering areas such as trade, technology and sister city relations.

During the event, a number of joint projects were presented and signed, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable development and deepening regional cooperation.

As protectionism and unilateralism continue to challenge global supply chains, the NIE automotive industry faces growing uncertainty.

Against this backdrop, as the world’s largest free trade agreement in terms of population and trade volume, RCEP is becoming a stabilizing force that brings greater certainty to the global economy. This view was echoed by many forum participants.

Automotive cooperation in the NIE among RCEP member states is gaining momentum. In May, PT SGMW Motor Indonesia (Wuling) celebrated the production of its three millionth electric vehicle worldwide. Geely has started trial production of its EX5 model at its plant in Indonesia, with mass production set to begin in the third quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has begun construction of a passenger car plant in Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone. The plant, which has a planned capacity of 10,000 units per year, is expected to begin operations by the end of this year.

Forum participants noted a clear shift in NIE automobile cooperation among RCEP member countries from early-stage automobile exports to deeper localization. This shift was marked by the establishment of regional manufacturing hubs and the development of full supply chains, including battery materials and key components.

For example, the SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile plant in Indonesia has implemented an integrated system covering both vehicle production and parts supply to support the modernization of the country’s automobile industry.

Major Chinese battery makers such as China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB), Gotion High-Tech, and SVOLT Energy Technology have also expanded their operations in RCEP countries, building factories in Thailand, Vietnam, and elsewhere. Some have already begun local production, accelerating the regional growth of the EV ecosystem.

“ASEAN is a dynamic region with growing demand for mobility solutions, increasing environmental awareness and a young population that embraces change,” said Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines President Edmund Araga.

In recent years, RCEP members have set targets to reduce carbon emissions. Cambodia aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and increase the share of renewable energy to 70 percent by 2030. Thailand plans to increase the share of electric vehicles in its car production to 30 percent by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

“RCEP has created a long-term cooperation mechanism for us,” said Malaysian Electric Vehicle Association President Dennis Chua, adding that battery development and waste recycling are expected to be key areas of long-term cooperation between Malaysia, China and other RCEP members.

In the first four months of 2025, China’s NIS auto output rose 48.3 percent year-on-year to nearly 4.43 million units, while sales jumped 46.2 percent to 4.3 million, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed. NIS vehicles accounted for 42.7 percent of the country’s total auto sales during the period.

“China has become a global leader in NEVs, not just in terms of manufacturing but also in research and development, battery innovation, infrastructure and scale,” said Edmund Araga. “Together, we can shape the future of mobility in Asia and around the world.” -0-

MIL-OSI United Nations: Leave No One Behind: Global Platform 2025 Champions Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction

Geneva, Switzerland, 6 June 2025 – The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 placed inclusion at the center of building resilient communities, with an intentional focus on ensuring that disaster risk reduction strategies address the needs of women, persons with disabilities, and other most at-risk groups. Throughout the five-day gathering, delegates, practitioners, and community leaders demonstrated that resilience can only be achieved when no one is left behind.

The platform’s second key theme, “Prioritizing gender equality, accessibility and inclusion to leave no one behind,” resonated across preparatory days, formal sessions, learning labs, and side events, reinforcing that while disasters affect everyone, they disproportionately impact certain groups including women, persons with disabilities, and older persons, and when these groups are empowered to lead risk reduction efforts we all benefit.

Breaking Barriers and Building Commitment

The RISK Award Ceremony 2025 highlighted how inclusion drives innovation in disaster risk reduction. ChildFund International won the €100,000 award for empowering indigenous children and youths in Bolivia’s Chiquitano Nation to lead emergency preparedness by combining ancestral knowledge with modern technology.

“The Risk Award is an honour to ChildFund in Bolivia, its partners but, most importantly, to the Chuiquitano People, who will bridge their ancestral indigenous wisdom with new technologies to empower children to get on the frontline of Disaster Risk Reduction,” said Ms. Ximena Loza, Country Director for Bolivia.

The Global Platform’s Gender Pledge Wall became a powerful symbol of commitment, with 165 pledges from participants, including 34 from Governments, including the making concrete pledges to advance gender equality in their disaster risk reduction work. The pledges ranged from policy commitments to grassroots initiatives, creating a commitment of action spanning all levels of society.

“I strongly believe our solutions must be gender-responsive. If we listen, engage, and invest in what works for women, we can build solutions that work for everyone,” emphasized Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Inclusion Hub served as a central gathering space fostering dialogue between persons with disabilities, women leaders, and policymakers. With 147 persons with disabilities registered for the Global Platformand nearly 500 participants expressing interest in disability inclusion in disaster risk reduction, the event demonstrated significant engagement from the disability community and allies affiliated with the disability stakeholder group.

Inclusion Hub sessions covered critical areas including inclusive disaster risk governance for effective risk management, gender-responsive and socially inclusive understanding of disaster risk, risk-informed development approaches, and financing gender-responsive and socially inclusive resilience building. These discussions demonstrated the platform’s commitment to not just talking about inclusion but creating it in practice.

Integrating Inclusion Throughout the Platform

Inclusion was integrated throughout the Global Platform, from technical sessions on early warning systems to informal discussions on community preparedness. This represented a fundamental shift in how the disaster risk reduction community approaches resilience building, moving beyond treating inclusion as a separate topic to integrating it into every conversation.

Whether discussing early warning systems, risk communication, or preparedness planning, speakers consistently emphasized that effective solutions must be designed with and for the most marginalized. The platform revealed how inclusion manifests differently across various disaster risk reduction challenges. In early warning systems, it means ensuring alerts reach everyone through accessible formats and trusted community channels. In risk assessment, it requires disaggregated data that captures how different groups experience hazards. In preparedness planning, it demands meaningful participation from women, persons with disabilities, older persons, and indigenous communities as leaders and decision-makers, not merely as beneficiaries.

A key message is that communities who have been excluded from DRR governance possess critical knowledge and capabilities that benefit us all. Indigenous forecasting methods, women’s community networks, and disability advocates’ understanding of accessibility barriers emerged as essential resources for building resilient societies. Sessions highlighted successful examples where traditional wisdom enhanced modern early warning systems and where community-led initiatives achieved stronger outcomes.

The conversations also confronted persistent gaps honestly. Despite years of commitments, persons with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in accessing disaster services, women remain underrepresented in disaster risk reduction leadership, and intersectional vulnerabilities-such as those faced by adolescent girls with disabilities-often remain invisible to planners and responders.

A Special Session on Progress Implementing The Gender Action Plan to Support Implementation of the Sendai Framework (Sendai GAP) highlighted progress that has been made over the past year since the Sendai GAP was launched. Success stories highlighted the impact that gender-responsive disaster risk reduction has had across diverse stakeholders, from disaggregated data informing budget allocations in Burundi, to how the Sendai GAP implementation tools have supported Kiribati; how women leadership has expanded across Mali, to how the transgender community in Pakistan has worked with provincial government to ensure inclusive disaster risk reduction is inclusive of all.

Looking Ahead

As the Global Platform concluded, the message was clear: inclusion is not an add-on to disaster risk reduction-it is fundamental to its success. The path forward requires strengthening data collection to better understand how disasters affect different groups while scaling successful models like community-based early warning systems that integrate traditional knowledge and ensure accessibility for all.

Equally important is investing in leadership development for women, persons with disabilities, and most at-risk communities to take central roles in disaster risk reduction planning and implementation. This shift demands embedding inclusion requirements into national and local disaster risk reduction strategies with dedicated resources and accountability mechanisms, while leveraging innovation to develop accessible early warning systems and preparedness resources that serve everyone effectively.

The Global Platform 2025 demonstrated that when inclusion guides disaster risk reduction efforts, communities become stronger and more resilient. As climate change continues to intensify disaster risks, the imperative to leave no one behind has never been more urgent-or more achievable.

The outcomes from Global Platform 2025 will inform the midterm review of the Sendai Framework implementation, ensuring that inclusion remains central to global disaster risk reduction efforts through 2030 and beyond.

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) — As China’s annual national college entrance examination, also known as the “gaokao,” kicked off on Saturday morning, a volunteer in Shenyang helped wheelchair-bound examinee Wang Zhenyu safely into the exam room by coordinating with police to open a “green corridor” – a small gesture that reflects nationwide efforts to support examinees.

While students are trying their best, authorities are working hard to ensure the exam is safe and fair for the 13.35 million examinees across the country. In many places, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is being deployed for this purpose.

In Benxi City, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, every gaokao exam hall is monitored by a real-time intelligent surveillance system that automatically detects behavioral irregularities – from whispering and frequent glances between students to inattentiveness of proctors – to strengthen discipline and fairness during exams.

AI-powered monitoring systems have also been implemented in other provinces, including Jiangxi, Hubei and Guangdong, enabling real-time monitoring, behavioral analysis and early warning. By accurately identifying behavioral violations without human intervention, the advanced technology eases the burden on examination staff and enhances the fairness and integrity of the examination itself.

These advanced measures play an important role in supporting this year’s gaokao. Authorities and communities across the country have implemented a wide range of initiatives to ensure the safe and fair administration of the exam, addressing concerns related to technological risks and environmental conditions, as well as the physical and mental well-being of students.

TECHNOLOGIES THAT ENSURE FAIRNESS

On May 28, China’s Ministry of Education announced that it would strengthen security measures for this year’s exams, with a particular focus on technological safeguards. The upgrades include stricter entry controls, increased screening of devices such as phones and smartwatches, radio signal blocking at all exam sites, and greater use of intelligent surveillance and screening systems to strengthen the exam’s security network.

Upgraded security gates at entrances have become a key component in ensuring fair examination conditions in Liaoning Province. At each examination site, students must pass through two intelligent security gates that can detect small metal objects, including mobile phones, smart watches, smart glasses, hidden earphones and other high-tech cheating devices. If the alarms are triggered, teachers conduct a check with hand-held metal detectors.

“Cheating technology is evolving every year, so this year the screening procedure at school entrance is stricter than ever,” said Liu Yang, principal of Benxi City High School. “At the school gate, students are reminded not to bring in prohibited devices, and lockers are provided for safe storage. On exam days, dedicated staff also inspect key areas such as walls, toilets and trash cans to prevent any form of information transfer from outside.”

Biometric verification has also become a standard part of exam security. At the entrance, examinees undergo facial recognition, fingerprint or iris scanning to prevent people from impersonating exam candidates. Identity checks are carried out several times before, during and after exams, and each time takes only a few seconds.

In parallel, national radio services actively monitor exam centres and surrounding areas for suspicious signals. By identifying and blocking unauthorised wireless communications, they help prevent fraud using electronic devices.

SOCIAL SUPPORT

In addition to technical precautions, many regions have taken additional steps to create a calm and favourable environment for exams. These include postponing performances, temporarily closing libraries, cultural centres, museums and sports facilities, and changing the working hours of government agencies and businesses.

In east China’s Anhui Province, the Anhui Huangmei Opera House suspended all performances from June 5 to 9 to minimize noise near exam venues. Similarly, cultural institutions in Jiangsu, Fujian and Henan provinces have postponed street performances, traditional lion dances and puppet shows to ensure a quiet atmosphere for students.

To ease traffic congestion and ensure timely arrival at exam sites, many cities have taken special measures such as postponing office opening times and encouraging carpooling or public transportation. Traffic police have designated priority lanes and are ready to escort examinees caught in traffic jams, ensuring that everyone gets to the exam site on time. In Benxi City, students can even order taxis with “gaokao free ride” stickers by phone or hail them on the street and show their pass to take the exam.

To protect students from adverse weather conditions, Beijing 101 Middle School set up rain and sun shelters, provided them with more than 200 umbrellas, and provided first aid by medical personnel on site. In the exam rooms, silent fans and purified drinking water created a comfortable environment.

Beijing has also introduced customized support measures for students with special needs, including providing exam papers in Braille and large print, as well as separate testing rooms, so that every examinee can take the exam with dignity and confidence.

The Anhui Communist Youth League has launched a nationwide campaign to support students’ mental health, sending counselors to schools to give talks on stress relief and offering online counseling to reduce test anxiety.

MIL-OSI China: NEV cooperation among RCEP members fuels green development

From new energy vehicles (NEVs) to shared visions of a greener future, low-carbon development brought China and its fellow Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) member states closer together at a recent dialogue in Hefei, east China’s Anhui Province.

The dialogue was focused on NEVs and advanced photovoltaic industrial and supply chains, and spotlighted the growing resolve of participating countries to transform mobility and advance sustainable development.

It was a key part of the 2025 RCEP Local Governments and Friendship Cities Cooperation (Huangshan) Forum, which ran from June 4 to 6 and brought together approximately 300 delegates from all 15 RCEP member states. The forum yielded 27 cooperation deals spanning trade, technology and sister-city ties.

Under the RCEP framework, a number of joint projects were unveiled and signed during the event, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability and deeper regional collaboration.

As protectionism and unilateralism continue to challenge global supply chains, the electric vehicle industry is facing increasing uncertainty.

Against this backdrop and as the world’s largest free trade agreement by population and trade volume, the RCEP is emerging as a stabilizing force, bringing greater certainty to the global economy. This perspective was echoed by many forum participants.

Under the RCEP framework, NEV cooperation between member states is gaining strong momentum. In May, PT SGMW Motor Indonesia (Wuling) celebrated the production of its 3-millionth electric vehicle globally, and has manufactured 40,000 units at its plant in Cikarang, West Java. Geely reached a key milestone with the trial production of its EX5 model at its factory in Purwakarta, Indonesia, which is set to begin mass production in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has begun construction on a passenger vehicle plant in Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone. With a planned annual capacity of 10,000 vehicles, the plant is expected to start operations by the end of this year.

Representatives at the forum noted a clear shift in NEV cooperation among RCEP members — from early-stage vehicle exports to deeper local integration. This transition has been marked by the establishment of regional manufacturing hubs and the development of full supply chains, including battery materials and key components.

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile’s factory in Indonesia, for example, has adopted a comprehensive setup encompassing both car manufacturing and the supply of parts to support the upgrade of the country’s auto industry.

Major Chinese battery makers such as China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB), Gotion High-Tech and SVOLT Energy Technology have also expanded into RCEP countries, building factories in Thailand, Vietnam and beyond. Some have already begun local production, accelerating the regional growth of an electric vehicle ecosystem.

“ASEAN represents a vibrant and dynamic region, with rising demand for mobility solutions, growing environmental awareness, and a youthful population that embraces change,” said Edmund Araga, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines.

In recent years, RCEP members have set goals to cut carbon emissions. Cambodia is aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and increase its renewable energy share to 70 percent by 2030. Thailand is planning for electric vehicles to account for 30 percent of its car production by 2030, and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Together, we represent more than 2.3 billion people and around 30 percent of global GDP. That is not just economic scale — it is social responsibility,” said Bhokin Bhalakula, former president of the National Assembly of Thailand and chairman of the Thai-Chinese Culture and Economy Association, speaking of the RCEP member states.

“RCEP has established a mechanism for long-term cooperation for us,” said Dennis Chuah, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of Malaysia, adding that battery development and recycling are expected to become key areas of long-term cooperation between Malaysia, China and other RCEP members.

As the host city of the dialogue, Hefei is making big strides in the new energy sector. In 2024, the city’s NEV output exceeded 1.37 million units, with the total value of its industrial chain hitting 260 billion yuan (about 36.19 billion U.S. dollars). Its solar and energy storage sectors also saw rapid growth, exceeding 180 billion yuan.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China produced nearly 4.43 million NEVs in the first four months of 2025, up 48.3 percent year on year, with sales rising 46.2 percent to 4.3 million units. NEVs accounted for 42.7 percent of all new vehicle sales during the period.

“China has become a global leader in NEVs — not just in terms of production, but in R&D, battery innovation, infrastructure and scale,” Araga said. “Together, we have the power to shape the future of mobility in Asia and the world.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves will announce a transformative £86 billion in the Spending Review to turbo-charge our fastest growing sectors, from tech and life sciences, to advanced manufacturing and defence, as part of the government’s plan to invest in Britain’s renewal through our Modern Industrial Strategy.

Britain will boost its world-leading status in research and innovation with a bumper funding package worth more than £22.5 billion a year in 2029/2030. From exploring new drug treatments and longer lasting batteries, to new AI breakthroughs, the package will drive new jobs and economic growth as well as ensuring the UK leads the way in pioneering the technologies of the future.

It comes ahead of the Spending Review, where the Chancellor will set out how the government will invest in Britain’s renewal by investing in the people’s priorities: health, security and the economy. The Chancellor will outline this government’s laser focus on investing in Britain’s renewal through projects that will bring jobs and prosperity, putting more money in working people’s pockets.

The new R&D package will mean local leaders have government backing to develop ‘innovation clusters’ across the country, to unlock the talent and opportunity in every region and nation.

It is those with skin in the game who know what is best for their region. That’s why, through the new Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, local leaders will be given the powers to decide how to target their research investment in the region and make the most of skill sets of the community, boosting high skilled jobs and igniting growth across the country, the core mission of the government’s Plan for Change.

The package will see every corner of the country benefit. The fund would give dedicated awards of at least £30 million to each of the 7 Established Mayoral Strategic Authorities in England – Greater Manchester, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, North East, and Greater London as well as to one equivalent region in each of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to be agreed with devolved governments. The fund will also include a competition, which will be open to all other parts of the UK. Following a review of the Treasury’s Green Book, the Chancellor to invest billions in the regions to support economic growth, making deliberate choices to stabilise the public finances in invest in Britain’s renewal. This announcement on R&D follows on the back off £15.6 billion of government investment in local transport in city regions in the North, Midlands and South West, which also empowers local leaders to make the best investment decisions for their areas which they know best and ensure value for money.

As the 2025 gaokao, China’s national college entrance exam, got underway Saturday morning, a volunteer in Shenyang helped wheelchair-bound student Wang Zhenyu reach the test room safely by coordinating with police to open a green channel, a small gesture reflecting nationwide efforts to support examinees.

While students concentrate on doing their best, authorities have made every effort to ensure the safety and fairness of the exam for its 13.35 million candidates nationwide. In many places, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is introduced for this purpose.

In Benxi City, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, every gaokao exam room is monitored by a real-time intelligent surveillance system that automatically flags irregular behavior — from whispers and frequent glances between students to inattentive proctors — to reinforce discipline and fairness.

AI-powered monitoring systems have also been adopted in other provinces, including Jiangxi, Hubei and Guangdong, enabling real-time surveillance, behavior analysis and early alerts. By detecting irregular behaviors accurately and without human input, the advanced technology eases the burden on exam staff, and strengthens the fairness and integrity of the exam itself.

Upgraded security gates have become a key line of defense in ensuring a fair exam environment in Liaoning. At every test site, students are required to pass through two intelligent security gates capable of detecting small metal objects, including mobile phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, hidden earpieces and other high-tech cheating tools. If an alarm is triggered, teachers follow up inspections with handheld metal detectors.

Beyond technological safeguards, many regions have taken additional steps to create a calm and supportive exam environment for candidates. These include postponing performances, temporarily closing libraries, cultural centers, museums and sports venues, and adjusting government and business office hours.

In east China’s Anhui Province, the Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre has suspended all performances from June 5 to 9 to minimize noise near exam venues. Similarly, cultural institutions in Jiangsu, Fujian and Henan have postponed street shows, traditional lion dances and puppet performances to ensure a quiet atmosphere for students.

To ease road traffic and ensure timely arrival, multiple cities have implemented tailored measures such as delaying office start hours and encouraging carpooling or public transit. Traffic police have set up priority lanes and are ready to escort students caught in traffic, ensuring every student reaches their exam site on time. In Benxi, students can even book taxis marked with “gaokao free ride” stickers by phone, or by hailing them on the street and showing their exam admission pass.

To shield students from adverse weather, the Beijing 101 Middle School has set up rain-and-sun shelters, stocked over 200 umbrellas, and ensured first aid support with on-site medical staff. Inside its exam rooms, air conditioning, silent fans and purified drinking water created a comfortable setting.

Beijing has also introduced personalized support measures for students with special needs, including the provision of exam papers in Braille and enlarged print, as well as separate testing rooms. These accommodations ensured that every candidate can take their exams with dignity and confidence.

The Communist Youth League of Anhui has launched a province-wide campaign to support students’ mental health, assigning counselors to schools to provide stress-relief talks and offering online counseling to ease exam anxiety.

These nationwide efforts reflect not only the logistical scale of the gaokao but also the deep societal importance attached to it. Behind every quiet exam room or smooth ride to a test center is a collective commitment to ensuring fairness, opportunity and hope for the future.

The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum concluded in Brasília with a call for stronger cooperation among member nations on key global challenges, including terrorism, artificial intelligence (AI), and economic inclusion.

Addressing the forum, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla thanked the Brazilian Parliament, government, and people for hosting the summit. He said the forum witnessed “meaningful dialogue” and an “exchange of views” aimed at enhancing parliamentary ties among BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

In its final declaration, the forum strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. Member states agreed on the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and underlined the importance of joint global efforts. The Speaker reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for all countries to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

The discussions also covered the future of AI, with consensus emerging on the importance of its responsible use. Birla noted that while AI is essential, its deployment must be guided by transparency and accountability.

CHENGDU, June 7 (Xinhua) — Under the golden rays of the June sun, a “high-risk” agricultural experiment is unfolding in the emerald rice fields of the “Tianfu Breadbasket” key demonstration area in Chongzhou City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Three weeks into the second AI rice-growing competition, organizers are faced with a key question: Can AI surpass centuries of farming wisdom?

The competition, which runs from May 15 to September 30, features six traditional farming teams and four AI-enabled teams on 1,000 mu (about 66.7 hectares) of high-quality rural fields. Each team cultivates 100 mu using elite rice varieties. This modern duel between tradition and technology offers insight into China’s advancement toward smart agriculture.

The AI teams use an intelligent agent for rice cultivation decision-making developed by the Institute of Urban Agriculture of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) using a sky-earth-space data network. The system collects information on crop growth, farming operations, diseases, pests and weeds in real time, processes the data through a cloud-based AI agent, generates detailed reports and professional recommendations that are instantly sent to the smartphones of the AI participants.

Based on these recommendations, AI participants carry out field work, and the monitoring system continuously collects operational data, forming a closed decision-making loop to ensure the accuracy and intelligence of the growing process.

Gao Ying, a participant from Qingqiao Shared Land Cooperative in Chongzhou City, said that compared with traditional farming, AI farming can quickly master key knowledge and production skills. “In addition, the system provides effective recommendations in response to queries,” she added.

Lessons from the first competition

This is not Gao Ying’s first experience. Last year’s competition showed the reality of the situation: the AI system from ASNC, which guided the newcomer Gao Ying in the 100 mu section, helped her team to take seventh place among nine teams.

“AI needs field practice,” said Wang Ran, a leading researcher at ASNC for urban agriculture strategy, whose team developed the system.

“When we created the algorithm, we had fragmentary data. Now we have created a comprehensive data set covering the entire rice growing process: start and end dates, photos of crop growth, relevant weather and soil data,” said Wang Ran.

“The power of AI is in processing 10,000 data points from each mu through our monitoring network, but converting them into practical actions requires deeper synergy between farmers and algorithms,” Wang explained. He noted that the AI-based decision-making rate reached 73 percent last year, but there were challenges with the timing of pest control.

“This year, the goal is to achieve more than 80 percent decision making to ensure that AI recommendations are consistent with farmers’ actions,” he said.

Harmony between humans and AI

The organizers view the competition not as a confrontation, but as an integration of humans and AI.

“AI is a help, not a replacement for humans. We aim to provide more accurate support to urban producers and decision makers through AI computing power,” Wang Ran said of the initial goal of applying AI in agriculture.

“The key value of the system is to create a bridge between innovators and farmers’ needs, improving the quality of decision-making by farmers and providing data for government sector planning,” he stressed.

Thank you, very much and good afternoon colleagues.

I’d like to begin my remarks by offering my sincere thanks to our hosts for all the work that they have done in organizing the summit and bringing this very important discussion together.

At the first REAIM Summit, in the Netherlands in February 2023, Canada supported the “Call to Action” on the responsible development, deployment, and use of AI in the military.

And following the inaugural REAIM Summit, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the productive work that has emerged since that time.

As you’re all well aware, we are in an era of heightened global competition.

Changing physical, technological and geopolitical landscapes have created new threats, vulnerabilities as well as new opportunities not only for our country but for our Allies and partners around the world.

These new threats are driving AI innovation within our Department of National Defence and our Armed Forces, and Canada remains fully committed to the responsible use of AI, through our endorsement of the Blueprint for Action.

As this new technology continues to become more visible in our operations and day-to-day work, it is critical that we harness this technology both effectively and ethically.

And to ensure Canada is ready to do this, I have announced the launch of our Department of National Defence and our Armed Forces’ AI Strategy in March of this year.

Our strategy aims to position the Canadian Armed Forces and our Department of National Defence as an AI-enabled organization by 2030.

And it envisions the ethical, inclusive, and trusted use of AI to achieve interoperability and strategic advantage in the battlefield while enhancing stewardship of our resources.

Our strategy also emphasizes the importance of cultivating an AI-ready workforce through training and partnership with allies.

This will ensure that AI technologies are not only developed efficiently but also effectively integrated and managed.

As part of our work to implement our AI Strategy, we have established the Department of National Defence and our Canadian Armed Forces AI Centre.

Our intent is that this Centre will become the hub of AI expertise, including for policy development.

It will also accelerate experimentation, testing, evaluation, and support to our Armed Forces members in fielding AI.

And as part of these efforts, Canada remains committed to developing a framework for the responsible use of AI in military contexts while making sure that we address unique ethical challenges ingrained in this technology. This includes mitigating unintended bias, including those related to gender and race.

Canada will ensure that any new AI or AI-enabled technology is developed and implemented in accordance with applicable laws, policies and guidelines, including applicable International Humanitarian Law, international human rights law, and the laws of armed conflict.

We will also ensure that this technology is only used to improve the work of our military personnel but not replace it.

That is why we have committed to ensuring that humans will always remain at the forefront of significant decisions with appropriate accountability mechanisms remaining in place.

Together, these efforts will ensure that our Department and our Military’s use of AI remains safe, ethical and responsible, and lives up to what all of our citizens expect of us.

We know that we must continue to innovate and remain agile to leverage AI’s full potential, but we know that we cannot do this alone.

And going forward, our Department of National Defence will always engage in extensive collaboration with our internal and external partners, with industry, academia, as well as our allies and partners to ensure that our use of AI remains responsible and interoperable.

And only by working together and fielding trusted systems, can we have the greatest opportunity to develop AI-ready forces who can contribute to defending our citizens at home, and our friends around the world.

MIL-OSI China: Saving young eyes: China’s multifaceted approach to curbing myopia

At a primary school in Jinan, east China’s Shandong Province, students are undergoing routine vision checks with the help of an innovative tool, namely a headphone-like smart monitoring device powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

This device collects real-time data concerning students’ reading distance, sitting posture, light exposure and screen time, and then generates systematic evaluations and personalized recommendations. This technology not only tracks vision changes but also promotes healthier eye habits.

“This is a dynamic monitoring process that is more objective and direct than traditional questionnaires,” said Huo Huanhuan, a doctor with the Shandong Prevention and Control Center for Child and Adolescent Myopia, as she scrolled through her phone to display trend analysis charts produced by the device.

So far, more than 200 schools in Shandong have partnered with the center — leveraging big data and AI to enhance early monitoring and myopia prevention.

This effort comes as China strives to address its pressing public health challenge of high myopia rates among children and adolescents. According to the latest official statistics, 51.9 percent of Chinese children and adolescents are nearsighted, despite a slight decline in recent years.

To combat this challenge, China has set ambitious targets — by 2030, the country aims to keep the myopia rate among 6-year-olds at around 3 percent and ensure that no more than 38 percent of primary school students develop myopia. Achieving these goals requires a multipronged approach.

A key strategy involves increasing outdoor time. A 2024 government document mandates that primary schools organize outdoor recess and ensure at least one hour of daily physical activity for students.

Scientifically, sunlight exposure during outdoor play stimulates the retinas to release more dopamine, a chemical that helps slow excessive eyeball elongation — a major contributor to myopia.

Leading the way is Shenzhen in south China’s Guangdong Province. This city rolled out a groundbreaking policy at the end of 2023, which stipulates that all its primary and middle schools must offer one physical education (PE) class a day. A year later, Shenzhen’s myopia rate among children and adolescents had dropped by 1.2 percentage points, meaning that over 20,000 students were prevented from needing glasses.

“One year of implementation has proven that the ‘one-PE-class-a-day’ policy significantly boosts the physical and mental health of students,” said Zheng Xiuyu, director of the Shenzhen Education Bureau.

Inspired by Shenzhen’s success, provincial-level regions like Yunnan, Anhui and Tianjin have introduced similar policies. Meanwhile, other regions, including Beijing, Shandong and Fujian in east China, have extended school break times from 10 to 15 minutes to encourage more physical activity.

At 9 a.m., upon hearing the bell, Wang Jiahui, a fifth-grade student in Shandong, picked up a football and immediately rushed toward the playground. “With five more minutes, we can organize a small match or do some specialized football skills practice.”

“Longer breaks give students more opportunities to exercise, leading to better fitness levels,” said Liu Shansong, an official from Licang District in Shandong’s Qingdao city, where the extended recess policy was piloted.

The results speak for themselves. In 2024, the district saw an 8-percentage-point increase in the “excellent” and “good” physical fitness rates among primary school students, alongside a 4-percentage-point drop in myopia rates.

In addition to promoting physical activity, education authorities nationwide are also upgrading school facilities to support eye health. Adjustable desks and chairs, along with lighting equipment beneficial to eye health, are being introduced to create vision-friendly learning environments.

Notably, in central China’s Hubei Province, primary schools have installed an intelligent prompt system in teachers’ electronic whiteboards, setting a 12-minute usage limit per class session. Once the time limit is reached, an eye-protection reminder automatically pops up, prompting teachers to discontinue electronic device usage.

Huo Pengfei, parent of a fourth-grade student at one of the schools, is delighted with the restriction on electronic screen use.

“This significantly alleviates children’s eye strain — and we sincerely applaud and support this initiative,” said Huo.
