  • MIL-OSI Russia: Yuri Trutnev invited Chinese partners to take part in festive events in Shumshu

Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev invited Deputy Chairman of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Guoqing and Chinese colleagues to visit the Kuril Island of Shumshu in September and take part in the festive events to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory over militaristic Japan.

“On the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, we are creating a memorial complex on Shumshu Island dedicated to the Kuril landing operation. Shumshu is one of the islands of the Kuril chain. In fact, World War II ended on this island. The Kwantung army was routed. Our soldiers routed superior enemy forces, demonstrated mass heroism, landed in the water with full equipment and attacked tanks for a long time up to the heights where the firing points were located. If you are interested in the event related to the opening of the memorial complex, we are ready to synchronize our actions with your embassy,” said Yuri Trutnev.

On the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister – Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev, in mid-May the working group visited the Kuril Island of Shumshu to monitor the implementation of the instructions of the President of Russia on holding events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II. The working group included representatives of the Presidential Administration, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Far East, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, and the Ministry of Culture of Russia. The delegation assessed the readiness of the sites to organize a summer expedition, as well as to create an open-air memorial.

The first stage of the military-historical memorial complex is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the victory over militarist Japan. The complex, dedicated to the Kuril landing operation, is being created on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The work is being carried out under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister and Plenipotentiary Representative Yuri Trutnev. The working group for the implementation of the instructions of the head of state is headed by Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko and Head of the Presidential Directorate for Public Projects Sergei Novikov.

“The team of the Center for Contemporary History, together with the Russian Military Historical Society, is preparing for the work that will take place this summer on the restoration and preservation of the military equipment present on Shumshu. We believe it is fundamentally important to preserve the tanks in the form in which they are now. We are talking about preserving the current position of the tanks. We will be as careful as possible about how they look now. In addition, we have engineering tasks that concern topographic work, aerial photography of the island, and historical study of materials. We plan to make an interactive map of the island by August based on the materials that will be found in archives and historical sources and obtained here as a result of field work,” said Ivan Anokhin, director of the Center for Contemporary History and geodetic engineer.

The events on Shumshu will take place during the summer of 2025 and will be dedicated to the Kuril landing operation. A search expedition, a solemn funeral ceremony for the burial of the remains of Soviet soldiers discovered during the search operations, an all-Russian physical culture event “Extreme cross-triathlon “Height 171” (swimming, cycling and running), hiking trips for the youth movement “More than a Journey”, a reconstruction of “Storming Shumshu Island”, as well as a concert program, including in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, are planned.

The key events of the opening of the memorial complex and the funeral ceremony of the soldiers’ remains will take place on August 18. A military-historical reconstruction will also take place then. About 150 people from two dozen regions of Russia and friendly countries will take part in it.

“The Russian Military Historical Society received a task from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, within the framework of the Presidential Decree on the creation of a memorial complex here, to carry out work on organizing all events related to the Ministry of Culture in 2025, and to formulate a concept for the development of the island up to 2030. Several strategic issues related to the objects that we will restore this year need to be resolved. The Nevsky Batalist company is making an entrance area that will symbolize the Kuril landing operation itself. We are currently looking for a place where this structure could be installed. Our task is to improve all cultural heritage sites that are located on the island today. These are graves, a mass grave, a grave of two Heroes of the Soviet Union, and a pillbox. Another of our main tasks is to work with the military equipment that remained here since the Great Patriotic War. We plan to connect military facilities with a road and path network. An important task is to reorganize the museum dedicated to the Severokurilsk landing operation in Severokurilsk,” said Elena Sinitsina, executive director of the Museum of Military History of the Russian Military Historical Society.

During the working visit, an inspection of the sites of the military-historical memorial complex dedicated to perpetuating the memory of the soldiers of the Kuril landing operation was conducted, as well as the placement of a thematic installation and captured tanks in the open air. The placement of a modular structure for the display of artifacts found during the search operations and the burial of the remains of Red Army and Navy soldiers found during the search operations were discussed. The readiness of the sites for organizing the placement of summer camps for the participants of the search expedition, museum workers, employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, doctors, and youth tourist groups was assessed. The issues of creating a road and path network between the island’s sites and cultural and educational routes were considered.

The transport scheme for delivering cargo and equipment to Shumshu was developed by the Sakhalin Region government together with the Kamchatka Region government and the Russian Ministry of Defense. It provides for the delivery of property to Severo-Kurilsk by sea vessels. Rolling barges will be used for further transportation of cargo to Shumshu, where there are no hydraulic structures. A total of 30 units of equipment have been delivered to the island since the end of March.

  • Markets open lower; IT, auto stocks drag Sensex, Nifty

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

The Indian stock market opened on a weaker note on Thursday, tracking negative global cues, with selling pressure observed in IT and auto sectors during early trade.

At around 9:26 AM, the BSE Sensex was down 726.42 points or 0.89%, trading at 80,870.21. The NSE Nifty slipped 225 points or 0.91%, standing at 24,588.45.

The Nifty Bank index declined 336.20 points or 0.61% to 54,738.90. Meanwhile, the Nifty Midcap 100 was down by 307.60 points or 0.54% at 56,312.00, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 39.50 points or 0.23%, trading at 17,509.10.

According to analysts, the market is currently within a consolidation range, and a breakout above or below the recent inside bar pattern could determine the next directional move. On the downside, immediate support for the Nifty lies at 24,600, with stronger support near 24,500. A breach of these levels could trigger further selling and drag the index toward the 24,300–24,000 range.

“On the upside, 24,900 serves as the first resistance level, with 25,000 acting as a key psychological barrier. A decisive move above this could spark a bullish rally toward the 25,200–25,500 zone,” said Mandar Bhojane, Equity Research Analyst at Choice Broking.

Within the Sensex pack, Adani Ports and Tata Steel emerged as the top gainers in early trade. In contrast, IndusInd Bank, Tech Mahindra, Power Grid, HCL Tech, Nestle India, and Hindustan Unilever were among the top losers.

Asian markets mirrored the weak sentiment, with indices in China, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Seoul, and Japan trading in the red. Jakarta was the sole outlier, showing gains.

Global cues remained negative following a sharp sell-off on Wall Street in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 41,860.44, down 816.80 points or 1.91%. The S&P 500 shed 95.85 points or 1.61% to close at 5,844.61, while the Nasdaq fell 270.07 points or 1.41% to end at 18,872.64.

Experts noted that although U.S. markets attempted to recover from early losses, they eventually fell back into negative territory, closing sharply lower amid mounting economic concerns.

Despite the weak sentiment, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers on May 21, purchasing equities worth ₹2,201.79 crore. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also remained positive, buying equities worth ₹683.77 crore.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

SACRAMENTO, USA, May 22 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump on Wednesday got into a dispute with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa over conspiracy theories about “white genocide” in South Africa, which the South African leader strongly denied.

During a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House, D. Trump accused South Africa of “white genocide” and an unfair land grab, and then showed materials allegedly proving his accusations.

Ramaphosa, who was in Washington to improve trade terms and ease bilateral tensions, rejected Trump’s statement during the meeting. He rejected the claim that white South Africans are fleeing the country because of racist policies. According to the president, South Africa has a crime problem and most of the victims are black citizens.

News outlets were shocked by Trump’s rudeness, saying that much of the information he presented during the meeting as evidence of “white genocide” in South Africa had been “repeatedly debunked.”

“Almost all of the conspiracy theories presented at Trump’s meeting with South African President S. Ramaphosa today have been debunked, with some South Africans saying they believe the information is “propaganda from AfriForum,” an Afrikaner lobby group criticized for its white nationalist leanings,” CNN reported.

The row between the US and South African presidents comes at a time of tense relations between the two countries, which worsened after Ramaphosa signed an expropriation law in January that Trump criticised for “discriminating” against the country’s white population. –0–

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Speech by FS at International Forum for Patient Capital (English only)

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

â€‹Following is the speech by the Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, at the International Forum for Patient Capital today (May 22):

Clara (Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Investment Corporation, Ms Clara Chan), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

         Good morning.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the inaugural International Forum for Patient Capital, organised by the Hong Kong Investment Corporation Limited (HKIC).

This gathering brings together a remarkable group of global patient capital leaders and enterprises at the forefront of cutting-edge technologies. We are delighted to host you in this dynamic city of opportunities and promise.

    The case for patient capital

Technological innovation is the engine of progress, and cutting-edge technologies are its spark. They ignite transformative change, turning bold imagination into world-changing reality. Yet, these frontier innovations often mean navigating uncharted waters. The risks are high, the outcomes are uncertain, and the timelines can be long – though the return could be huge.

This is precisely where and why patient capital plays a critical role.

Grounded in long-term vision, with the courage to weather the ups and downs of economic cycles and the willingness to embrace future possibilities, patient capital is guided not only by profits but more importantly, by purpose and impact.

Around the world, governments and institutions are recognising the strategic importance of patient capital in powering technological advancement, industrial transformation and economic growth.

For instance, our country, China, has emphasised the need to make long-term investments in nascent hard-tech enterprises, supporting deep-tech ecosystems and building new quality productive forces.

    Hong Kong’s vision and pathway

Here in Hong Kong, we understand the importance of patient capital in our pursuit of a more diversified economic structure with leading-edge competitiveness.

It is our aspiration not only to be a leading international financial, shipping and trade centre, but also a world-class innovation and technology (I&T) hub. Looking ahead, finance, trading and I&T will be the key engines powering Hong Kong’s economic growth

Over the years, we have made substantial investments in the tech sector. We have formulated a comprehensive strategy to expedite I&T development across the entire spectrum. From supporting basic research and the commercialisation of research outcomes, to nurturing start-ups, attracting strategic enterprises and promoting advanced manufacturing, we are scaling the tech ecosystem in Hong Kong from upstream to downstream.

Our edge in innovation is amplified by our synergistic development with sister cities in the GBA (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area). In fact, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou science and technology cluster has been ranked second globally by the Global Innovation Index for five consecutive years.

Our tech ecosystem benefits from a complete and deep funding chain, from angel investments, venture capital, private equity to IPOs.

However, at times traditional investors are hesitant to enter the early, risky stages of innovation, where potential may be the greatest, yet certainty is the lowest. To address this gap in the funding chain, the Government may need to take the lead.

That is why we established the HKIC. One of its key priorities is to channel market capital into high-potential, nascent-stage industries, and attract innovative enterprises to help us build the related ecosystem in Hong Kong.

The HKIC carries a dual mandate: to enhance the long-term competitiveness and economic vitality of Hong Kong and, at the same time, seek reasonable financial returns over the medium to long term.
So far, the HKIC has participated in over 100 projects. It has drawn in four dollars of long-term private capital for every dollar it invested.

On the tech front, the HKIC focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), hard tech, biotech, new materials and new energy. These sectors were chosen with strategic ambition. In AI, Hong Kong is home to outstanding academic institutions and uniquely positioned at the convergence of Mainland and international data and talent. In healthcare, we are proud to host two of the world’s top 40 medical schools, and maintain the highest regulatory and professional standards. In green tech, we have more than 300 such start-ups in our Science Park and Cyberport, and many of them are already exporting solutions overseas.

Let me stress one point: the HKIC is not just an investor. It is a co-investor and a collaborator. We work alongside strategic partners to support sectors where we see long-term potential and where Hong Kong has distinct advantages.

HKIC’s vision extends beyond borders. We are committed to supporting regional and global collaboration, guided by the conviction that openness and partnership are the best pathways to sustainable growth and shared success.

I’m sure Clara will talk more about the work of the HKIC shortly.

    Opportunities ahead

Looking to the future, geo-economic fragmentation has no doubt cast a shadow over global growth and investment flows. But even in fragmentation, opportunities emerge.

As supply chains realign and countries localise critical industries, patient capital can fund scalable alternatives. As technological divides widen, new spaces are open for alternative platforms, creative new entrants and innovative breakthroughs.

A compelling example is the “DeepSeek Moment”. Although start-ups may have a modest and recent beginning, DeepSeek demonstrates how ingenuity, creativity and agility can overcome resource constraints and lead to success on a global scale.

What matters is whether we are willing and ready to support start-ups like them, and provide the capital bridge they need to succeed.

    Our appeal

That brings us to today’s Forum. More than a dialogue, this event is a platform to connect global patient capital with the transformative ideas and projects that will shape our future.

There is no better place than Hong Kong to host this initiative.

Under the“one country, two systems”framework, we remain firmly committed to our status as an open, diverse and international city, with free flow of capital, goods, talent and information. We uphold the common law system, underpinned by a judiciary exercising powers independently, with robust intellectual property rights protection. These are the foundations of Hong Kong’s success, and the reasons why we are trusted as a hub for global capital .

We are also committed to working with international partners to chart new and sustainable pathways of growth, and to allow the dividends of innovation to transcend borders and benefit the people.

I am therefore deeply encouraged to see so many leaders of capital and technology coming together today. The conversations you begin here will lead to partnerships, to investments, and to shared progress.

Allow me to conclude by quoting an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Ladies and gentlemen, let us go far-together. Thank you very much.

As usual, Real Madrid did not provide a timeline for the 18-year-old’s return. The club, which signed Endrick last summer, stated only that “his recovery will be assessed,” though the severity of the injury makes his participation in the Club World Cup highly unlikely.

Real Madrid is set to debut in the tournament on June 18 against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, followed by matches against Mexican club Pachuca on June 22 and Austria’s RB Salzburg on June 27 in the group stage.

The injury brings a premature end to what has been a slightly disappointing debut season for Endrick, who has been behind Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr in the attacking pecking order.

Endrick scored just one goal in 22 La Liga appearances–19 of those as a substitute–but found more success in cup competitions, netting five times in the Copa del Rey and once in the Champions League.

  • MIL-OSI China: WADA welcomes additional funding from Qatar for scientific research

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has welcomed Qatar’s decision to provide additional funding to support the organization’s scientific research efforts.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth in Qatar will contribute an extra 1.5 million U.S. dollars, in addition to the country’s annual payment of more than 200,000 dollars to WADA, the agency announced on Wednesday.

“WADA is appreciative of the continued support of our partners within Qatar’s Ministry of Sports and Youth. The additional funding will make a significant impact on anti-doping research globally and within Qatar itself,” said WADA President Witold Banka.

“This is another indication of the strong support WADA receives from governments around the world, which believe in and trust us to deliver on our clean sport mission and understand the importance of cutting-edge scientific research to being ahead of those who seek to cheat the system.”

Earlier this month, Japan pledged an additional 196,000 dollars to support anti-doping capacity and capability development in Asia and Oceania. According to WADA, Japan has contributed roughly 2.5 million dollars in additional funding over the past two decades.

In the past 10 years, WADA has also received additional contributions from countries including Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, India, Kuwait, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and the United States.

Banka stated earlier this year that WADA invests heavily in anti-doping research, allocating about 10 percent of its annual budget to scientific and social science initiatives. The agency has also called on its partners to support ongoing research efforts, including recent work focused on unintentional doping.

WADA has set a budget of more than 50 million dollars for 2025.

The United States, which failed to pay its 2024 annual fee of 3.62 million dollars–amounting to 14 percent of WADA’s budget–automatically loses its seat on the organization’s executive committee for the year.

“It is so important for athletes that WADA is properly resourced and that it has certainty around the funds it receives,” said Yuhan Tan, Belgium’s former badminton player and WADA Athlete Council representative on the Foundation Board.

“I call on all governments to fulfill their commitments and make their annual contributions to WADA in a predictable and timely fashion so the work upholding the World Anti-Doping Code and supporting athletes around the world can continue. Clearly, anti-doping is becoming more and more politicized, which must be avoided as it puts all athletes and the entire system at risk,” he commented when WADA released its budget plan earlier this year.

  • MIL-OSI China: Tottenham 1-0 Man United: Spurs win Europa League

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium on Wednesday night, courtesy of an own goal by United defender Luke Shaw in the closing moments of the first half.

Shaw was unfortunate to deflect the ball into his own net after a flick from Brennan Johnson. The goal, however, summed up what was a lackluster final between the sides currently 16th and 17th in the Premier League.

Neither team was able to take control of the game, and after Tottenham chose to sit deep in the second half to protect its lead, Manchester United failed to generate any clear-cut chances to equalize.

The win secures Tottenham a spot in next season’s Champions League, while United miss out on European qualification–an outcome that will pose serious financial challenges for the club, already struggling economically.

There was a mild surprise in United’s starting lineup, with Alejandro Garnacho left on the bench in favor of Mason Mount, who had scored a decisive goal in the semifinal.

The first half was far from a footballing showcase, with limited space in midfield and both teams repeating the errors that have plagued their domestic campaigns.

Tottenham showed more attacking intent, partly due to a backline that has struggled this season. Richarlison posed a threat and nearly scored from a Pedro Porro cross. Johnson also came close after a Harry Maguire error opened space on the right, while at the other end, Amad Diallo fired narrowly wide after a pair of Bruno Fernandes-inspired chances.

Fernandes was central to United’s forward play but found little room in a game defined by high energy and low quality.

Tottenham’s lone goal typified the match. Johnson got a touch on Pape Sarr’s cross from the left, reacting quickly, and the ball ricocheted off Shaw into the net.

United attempted to push forward in the second half, but their possession only served to highlight the attacking inefficiency that has marred their season.

Micky van de Ven cleared off the line midway through the half after Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario misjudged a cross. Fernandes then fired wide, and United failed to muster another meaningful opportunity until deep into stoppage time, when Shaw’s powerful header was denied by Vicario.

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou has claimed he always wins something in his second season at a club. Whether he will remain for a third, despite this success, remains an open question.

China’s first offshore carbon capture, utilization and storage project put into operation

    Xinhua | May 22, 2025

China’s first offshore carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project on Thursday began operations in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in south China, said China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the country’s largest offshore oil and gas producer.

The project, situated at the Enping 15-1 platform, captures carbon dioxide produced during oil development, purifies and pressurizes it to a supercritical state, and injects it into underground oil reservoirs at an initial rate of 8 tonnes per hour. This innovative approach both drives increased oil production and achieves carbon sequestration, creating a new model of marine energy recycling.

The Enping 15-1 platform, currently Asia’s largest offshore oil production platform, is located approximately 200 km southwest of China’s southern boomtown Shenzhen at a water depth of about 90 meters. At peak production, the oilfield group produces over 7,500 tonnes of crude oil daily.

CCUS represents an emerging technological approach for low-carbon and efficient development of fossil energy. Globally, there are 65 commercial CCUS projects, though most are concentrated onshore with very few offshore implementations.

Three new sites in China were officially recognized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) on Wednesday.

The newly-designated sites are the Deqing Freshwater Pearl Mussels Composite Fishery System in Zhejiang Province, the Fuding White Tea Culture System in Fujian Province, and the Gaolan Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard System in Gansu Province. With the latest inclusions, China continues to lead globally in the number of GIAHS sites, now totaling 25

The 800-year-old Deqing system, which is focused on shelled pearl mussel cultivation, integrates aquaculture, agriculture, and traditional craftsmanship. It produces pearls, rice, silk, and other goods. This circular system offers valuable global insights into sustainable farming, ecological balance, and rural development, the FAO said.

An aerial drone photo taken on May 7, 2024 shows workers picking tea leaves at a tea garden in Xingcun Town in Wuyishan City, southeast China’s Fujian Province. [Photo/Xinhua]

Meanwhile, the centuries-old Fuding White Tea Culture System combines ecological knowledge with artisanal practices. It integrates tea gardens with forests and crops, preserving 18 varieties of tea trees. In addition to tea, the system also supports more than 120 other agricultural species, contributing to biodiversity and food system resilience.

The Gaolan Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard System, located along the Yellow River in the arid Loess Plateau, has a 600-year history of dryland agroforestry. It showcases techniques adapted to water scarcity and erosion-prone soils, supporting agrobiodiversity, food security, and rural livelihoods. The system produces over 2 million kg of pears annually, which are used to produce local specialities such as dried pears.

“Agricultural heritage systems are living examples of harmony between people and nature that have thrived and evolved through generations and have much to teach us as we adapt to an uncertain future,” said Kaveh Zahedi, director of the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment at FAO.

Other newly-recognized GIAHS sites beyond China include the shade-grown erva mate system in Parana, Brazil; the metepantle ancestral agricultural system in Tlaxcala, Mexico; and the agricultural systems in jable and volcanic sands on Spain’s Lanzarote Island.

With the latest additions, the FAO’s global agricultural heritage network now comprises 95 systems across 28 countries.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

“Starting June this year, Chileans can visit China visa-free! I eagerly await my family’s visit soon,” Carolina Araya, a Chilean national, shared what she called “great news” on her WeChat Moments. Many of her friends gave her likes.

Currently a Spanish language instructor at Anhui International Studies University in east China, Araya reminisced about a visit by her parents almost six years ago. “I really hope they can make it later this year,” she said.

Moreover, it’s not just Chileans who will benefit. Effective June 1, 2025, China will expand its visa-free access to also include citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay, with a trial period lasting until May 31, 2026.

Holders of ordinary passports from these five Latin American nations may enjoy visa-free entry to China for various reasons — including business trips, tourism, family visits, cultural exchanges or simply transit — for no more than 30 days, said a spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry at a recent news briefing.

Introduced at the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum in Beijing earlier this month, this policy aligns with China’s broader initiative to extend visa exemptions and foster friendly exchanges with more Latin American and Caribbean countries.

    Potential travel rush

Filipe Porto, a Brazilian academic who has spent over a year in China, said the country will probably become the first overseas travel choice for his 52-year-old mother.

“My mother has never traveled abroad,” said Porto, who is a researcher in international relations with the Federal University of ABC, Brazil. He is also eagerly awaiting the arrival of his Brazilian friends, who, according to Porto, used to find the visa application process a hassle.

Situated on opposite sides of the globe, travel between Latin America and China once presented significant challenges, stemming not only from visa complexities but also vast distances. Nowadays, however, increased air connectivity coupled with relaxed visa restrictions have brought these distant lands much closer.

In 2024, a direct flight was launched connecting Mexico City and south China’s Shenzhen. Covering more than 14,000 kilometers, it is the longest direct international passenger route from China.

Other routes, such as Beijing-Madrid-Sao Paulo, Beijing-Madrid-Havana and Beijing-Tijuana-Mexico City, have also strengthened links between China and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Data from online travel platforms shows huge potential for inbound tourism from the five Latin American countries that will soon enjoy visa-free status. This year, Ctrip, a leading Chinese online travel platform, reported 168 percent year-on-year growth in inbound tourism orders from Argentina, while orders from both Brazil and Chile saw a growth of over 80 percent.

Ctrip Vice President Qin Jing said China’s visa-free policy trial with countries like Brazil will not only spark an increased flow of cross-border tourism but also serve as an innovative step in promoting deeper cultural dialogue and shared values between China and the five Latin American nations. “We can expect the inbound tourism market to usher in a new, dynamic and reciprocal pattern in the near future,” she said.

Federico Carabajal, a 32-year-old Argentinian winemaker, has spent more than a year working at the Stone and Moon Winery in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China. During this time, he has explored a number of Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, southwest China’s Chengdu and Chongqing, and Xi’an in the northwest.

“China is further opening up to the world. The country is trying to showcase its rich culture, history, cuisine, technologies and smart cities to the world,” Carabajal said. “Besides, traveling in China is very safe. It’s also much cheaper than in many other countries.”

    Impact beyond tourism

Tiva Bezerra, head of human resources at Suzano Asia, a major Brazilian pulp producer, believes the visa exemption could significantly improve how the company operates its local projects.

“We envision it enabling more spontaneous technical exchanges, smoother executive visits — and potentially making China assignments more attractive to Latin American professionals,” Bezerra said.

Gabriel Martin, a Uruguayan entrepreneur who owns two steakhouses while also managing a beef import venture in China, hailed the move as a potential boost for his business, because it means more clients.

“China is one of the best countries in terms of business services,” Martin noted. “The Chinese people are warm and welcoming. Furthermore, it’s astonishing how well organized the country is, considering its vast expanse and dense population.”

Gabriel Martin, a businessman from Uruguay, displays the steak he just cooked at LOKO steakhouse in the ancient city of Wuhu in Wuhu City, east China’s Anhui Province, June 20, 2024. [Photo/Xinhua]

China’s continued expansion of its visa-free policy and efforts to facilitate entries send a clear signal of the country’s commitment to high-standard opening up, according to Yu Haibo, an associate professor specializing in tourism management in Tianjin-based Nankai University.

Yu added that these measures demonstrate China’s resolve and efforts to promote a more dynamic, inclusive and resilient form of economic globalization.

Over the years, China has consistently contributed to promoting cooperation and exchanges with LAC countries, with the past decade witnessing remarkable progress since the inaugural China-CELAC Forum.

In the course of the last ten years, trade between China and LAC nations has doubled — amounting to an impressive 518.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2024.

Chinese products, including its signature electric vehicles, are exported extensively to LAC countries, while goods originating from the region also enjoy popularity in China. Notably, Chilean cherries and beef from Argentina have made their way into the regular diet of Chinese households.

Sun Yanfeng, a researcher at the Institute of Latin American Studies, under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said that Latin American countries hope to expand exports in their economic and trade relations with China. The visa-free policy will significantly ease the process for Latin American entrepreneurs, particularly those from small and medium-sized enterprises, to visit China.

In addition to the visa-free policy, the recent China-CELAC Forum ministerial meeting also announced a set of other initiatives — such as supporting 300 impactful small-scale livelihood projects, enhancing vocational education cooperation, promoting Chinese language education and facilitating tourism dialogue.

To Araya, the visa exemption will significantly benefit foreigners studying Chinese and Chinese students learning Spanish or Portuguese, two languages widely used in Latin America. “We may be at the other side of the world, but now we can get closer,” she said.

  • MIL-OSI China: US stocks close lower amid rising Treasury yields

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

U.S. stocks ended lower on Wednesday as 20-year bond auction saw weak demand, and U.S. Treasury yields surged.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 816.80 points, or 1.91 percent, to 41,860.44. The S&P 500 fell 95.85 points, or 1.61 percent, to close at 5,844.61, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 270.07 points, or 1.41 percent, ending at 18,872.64, its first negative day in three.

Ten of the eleven major S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory. Real estate and health care led the declines, falling 2.63 percent and 2.37 percent, respectively. Communication services was the only sector to post a gain, rising 0.67 percent.

The downturn came as U.S. Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year yield nearing 4.6 percent and the 30-year yield rising above 5 percent. Yields spiked further after the U.S. government’s 16-billion-U.S.-dollar auction of 20-year bonds received weaker-than-expected demand, resulting in a higher yield than markets had anticipated.

In a client note published Wednesday, Piper Sandler’s chief investment strategist Michael Kantrowitz outlined important thresholds for the 10-Year Treasury yield and explained how movements around those levels could affect the stock market. “The path of rates will also be crucial for equities, particularly for relative performance,” Kantrowitz wrote. “Since 2022, equity markets have struggled when 10 yr rates moved above 4.5-4.75 percent and we are pushing up against that zone once again.”

Meanwhile, investors kept a close eye on developments in Washington, D.C., where debate continues over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending bill. The proposed legislation would extend existing tax cuts and introduce new ones, but is projected to add roughly 3 trillion U.S. dollars to the federal deficit over the next decade.

“The question now is, from a fiscal perspective, what will the tax bill look like, and will it undo all of the recent fiscal frugality by simply raising the debt level at a slower rate of pace? So I think that’s why the 10-year yield is moving higher — because investors are worried that we’re really not doing anything to slow the pace of inflation and to reduce the debt,” Sam Stovall, CFRA Research chief investment strategist, told CNBC in an interview.

The bond-driven pressure on equities was compounded by disappointing earnings reports from major retailers. Target dropped 5.21 percent after slashing its annual forecast, citing reduced consumer spending and lower confidence. Lowe’s lost 1.68 percent after reaffirming its guidance, and TJX fell 2.89 percent after maintaining its outlook, assuming tariffs with China remain unchanged.

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s sporting goods industry shows strong resilience: report

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

The total output and sales of China’s sporting goods manufacturing industry exceeded 2 trillion yuan (about 277.5 billion US dollars) for the first time in 2023, marking a year-on-year growth of 2.39%, according to an industry report.

The China Sporting Goods Industry Development Report 2024, released Wednesday at the 12th China Sports Industry Conference, found that the sector continues to recover and demonstrates strong resilience.

The added value of China’s sporting goods manufacturing industry grew by 7.3% year-on-year in 2022 and by 3.96% in 2023, outperforming many segments of the broader manufacturing industry, according to the report.

Exports also rebounded in 2024, increasing 6.77% year-on-year to about 28.4 billion dollars. Shipments to North America and Western Europe remained strong, while emerging markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, and Poland showed significant potential.

Domestic demand for sporting goods also showed strong momentum. The report cited transaction data from four of China’s leading e-commerce platforms – JD.com, Taobao, Tmall, and Douyin – indicating that online sporting goods sales reached 333.7 billion yuan (about 46.3 billion dollars) in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 22.59%. Sales of domestic and foreign brands were reported to be roughly equal.

While the construction of new public sports facilities has slowed, demand for upgrades and higher-quality venues is rising. As of 2024, China has more than 4.8 million sports venues, covering a total area of 4.23 billion square meters. The per capita sports venue area now stands at 3.0 square meters.

The report also identified several trends reshaping the industry: sporting events are boosting the penetration of sporting goods; products are becoming increasingly smart; and evolving consumer demands are driving diversification in product offerings.

Despite these positive indicators, the report warned of growing external market pressures. In response, many companies are accelerating efforts to expand overseas production in order to mitigate export risks.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ernst: American Leadership is Back

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA)

WASHINGTON – Today on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) reaffirmed that President Trump is showing the world that American leadership is back and echoed his strong message for Vladimir Putin to end Russia’s bloody war.
“Russia’s aggression has already cost too many innocent lives, about 5,000 lives every single week. Too many innocent lives, folks, which is why I support President Trump’s efforts to get a peace deal done now,” said Ernst.

    Watch Ernst’s full remarks here.
    Ernst’s full remarks:
“Last week, President Trump showed the world that American leadership is back.
“He brought home the last living American hostage – delivering Edan Alexander from Iran-backed Hamas and reuniting him with his family after nearly 600 days.
“He stood with our partners in the Middle East to strengthen the historic Abraham Accords.
“And he delivered a strong message to Vladimir Putin: End the war.
“Today, I stand in support of a sovereign Ukraine and echo the President’s call to Putin to stop this bloodbath that never should have happened.
“This is an issue that not only affects a close partner under siege, but also the strength of the United States of America and the security of the free world.
“Let’s be clear here folks — China is watching. So is Iran and North Korea. And of course, Vladimir Putin is watching, too.
“They call it the ‘new axis of evil’ for a reason.
“Mr. President, I personally witnessed and experienced the growth of the U.S.-Ukrainian relationship when I visited Ukraine in its waning days of Soviet control as part of an agricultural student exchange program.
“This was in 1989, and I had the privilege of living with a Ukrainian family on a very small collective farm.
“Now, as we got together, there were a number of us Iowa students on that exchange, and again, it was an agricultural exchange.
“We came together, each of us with our families, in a group setting, one of the very first nights that we were on that collective.
“And again, with the premise of an agricultural exchange, we were farming tomatoes, working with the cattle and the hogs.
    “Very small, small collective.
“We came together, and the Ukrainians wanted to ask us questions.
“So all of us American students, all of us from Iowa, we sat down with our Ukrainian families, and we expected to talk about agriculture.
    “Iowa agriculture versus Ukrainian agriculture.
“And much to my surprise, the first question that came from our Ukrainian counterparts, was not about how we raise corn or soybeans in Iowa, it was not about the types of machinery that we used on our farm.
“But the first question the Ukrainians asked us was: What is it like to be free? What is it like to be an American?
“Because in 1989, those Ukrainians were living under Soviet socialist rule.
“They could not travel without having the permission of their government.
“My family did not have a telephone and if they wanted to use the collective manager’s telephone, they would have somebody listening in on the conversation.
“They would have to know the purpose of the telephone call, who they were calling, why they needed to make a telephone call.
“This was 1989, and I learned a lot from that exchange.
“I saw Ukrainian people desperate to break free of socialist economic structures and authoritarian restrictions on freedom of movement, the ability to have your own employment, and on freedom of speech.
“Two years later, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union and broke free.
“Later, many years later, 2003, the United States was involved in the war in Iraq.
“I was a soldier in 2003, during Iraqi Freedom.
“So I was a transportation company commander permanently stationed in Kuwait.
“My transporters ran convoys from the ports in Kuwait up to Iraq, delivering goods for our war fighters.
“So I was on a little subcamp in Kuwait outside of Camp Arifjan. My soldiers and I lived on that subcamp. The other half of the camp was occupied by other forces.
“Those other forces were Ukrainian soldiers. Ukraine is not part of NATO. They were not required to support the United States of America in Iraq, but Ukraine, of its own volition, sent their soldiers and not just as support elements, they were there as combat forces.
“So again, I was a transporter. We ran convoys in Iraq.
“The other half of that camp that I lived on, they were Ukrainian engineer forces. They did road clearing.
“And I think back, how many American lives did those engineers save from their road clearing efforts, clearing bombs so they wouldn’t be detonated by my drivers?
“Today, Ukraine is fighting its own war.
“And I will remind everyone, the United States does not have forces involved in the Russia-Ukraine war. None. Zero. None.
“Today, Ukraine fights not only for its own survival, but for the very principles the United States was founded on.
“When America leads, the world is safer. When we disengage and when we retreat – like we saw for the last four years under the Biden administration – chaos fills the void.
“Russia’s aggression has already cost too many innocent lives, about 5,000 lives every single week. Too many innocent lives, folks, which is why I support President Trump’s efforts to get a peace deal done now.
“Vladimir Putin cannot keep tapping the United States of America along.
“I vow to keep working with my colleagues to equip the president with all tools necessary to hold Russia accountable – including sanctioning Russia and its supporters – if they continue to drag out peace talks and carry on with the needless bloodshed, so this war that never should have started can come to an end.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Murray Slams Rubio’s Defiance of Congress & Federal Law, Says Trump Admin Has Undermined American Leadership and Caused Preventable Suffering

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator for Washington State Patty Murray

Murray: “Secretary Rubio… you have overseen a systematic campaign to dismantle USAID, impound billions of dollars that this Committee actually provided, and unilaterally remake the Department of State—without the slightest bit of concern that you lack the authority to do that without Congress. It has created chaos, it’s caused preventable deaths across the globe, and it has undermined American leadership… what you have done is outright illegal.”

Murray calls for bipartisan pushback: “Are we going to roll over as Trump tramples our laws, and undermines our U.S. leadership, burns down what we’ve spent decades building, and lets millions of people across the globe suffer and die? Or are we going to stand up, push back, assert our constitutional power of the purse? And to my colleagues on both sides: this is the moment to decide whether this Committee continues to be a powerful bipartisan force. A force that I think we’ve all been proud of for a very long time.”

***WATCH: Senator Murray’s remarks and questioning***

Washington, D.C. — Today, at a Senate Appropriations State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee hearing on the fiscal year 2026 budget request for the Department of State, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, called Secretary Marco Rubio out for flagrantly defying federal laws, ignoring Congress, undermining American leadership and our national security, and causing untold preventable suffering and death in his four months as secretary thus far.

In opening comments, Vice Chair Murray said:

“Secretary Rubio, I am deeply concerned that you have overseen a systematic campaign to dismantle USAID, impound billions of dollars that this Committee actually provided, and unilaterally remake the Department of State—without the slightest bit of concern that you lack the authority to do that without Congress. It has created chaos, it’s caused preventable deaths across the globe, and it has undermined American leadership.

“As Ranking Member Schatz noted, what you have done is outright illegal. A complete violation of bipartisan appropriations laws, the Impoundment Control Act, and the Anti-Deficiency Act.

“Within hours of taking office, President Trump halted all foreign aid—in flagrant defiance of the law. Now, under your watch, Secretary Rubio, that freeze was implemented with chaos and cruelty.

“And then, you illegally shuttered USAID—placing everyone on leave, halting lifesaving work, literally locking people out of the building and out of their devices—even in dangerous corners of our world.

“You paid people not to work, abandoned our partners across the globe, and chaotically recalled global staff—putting more than 1,600 Americans who served our country abroad in limbo.

“And when you shut down the USAID payment system, you even refused to pay for services provided before the illegal freeze. You fought all the way to the Supreme Court against paying for services U.S. businesses already rendered, with funding that Congress already provided. And I know you know, Mr. Secretary, but you lost.

“And I assume you need the reminder, because to this day, you have not made all the payments that are required by our nation’s highest court, and as a result American companies continue to layoff American workers. And, by the way, you do continue to lose in court—including just yesterday over your move to illegally replace U.S. Institute of Peace leadership, and in recent cases, over international broadcasting.

“Now, eventually, Mr. Secretary, you sent Congress notice of your intent to collapse USAID into State. Only: you didn’t consult with this Committee—that’s required by law. It came without justification—also required by law. And it came long after USAID was reduced to rubble.

“So, sadly disregard for our laws and values, to me, has sort of become a pattern of your tenure: revoking visas when someone writes an op-ed you don’t like, or reaching a secret deal to use taxpayer dollars to jail U.S. residents in a notorious foreign prison—no due process. Or pointlessly leaving food assistance to rot in storage. Actually, in Dubai, we now have 500 tons of high energy biscuits that expire in July—they’re bought, they’re shipped, they’re stored all at taxpayer expense. But you’ve condemned them to waste. And that’s one example of many.

“Now, another pattern that I am deeply worried about is transparency. We have pressed you for information. Our staffs have sent you countless emails and briefing requests so we can do our job here. There are hundreds of unanswered requests, and no effort to address them. And Mr. Secretary, that’s got to change.

“Even your plan to reorganize the State Department came with no information on the 270 offices you are moving or eliminating, the proposed layoffs, or how USAID would be merged into State.

“I won’t ask you whether impounding billions of dollars is legal. It is not.

“I won’t ask whether it’s efficient to pay people not to work or fire them without even determining staffing needs.

“And I won’t ask if cutting 91% of our counternarcotic and law enforcement programs makes us safer, abruptly abandoning agreements with allies makes us stronger, or ceding our global leadership to China makes us more prosperous.

    “Of course not—we know that.

“We have worked together for years in a bipartisan way to advance U.S. interests and fund those programs. So, with respect to my colleagues, how long are we going to sit here and watch this silently?

“Are we going to roll over as Trump tramples our laws, and undermines our U.S. leadership, burns down what we’ve spent decades building, and lets millions of people across the globe suffer and die? Or are we going to stand up, push back, assert our constitutional power of the purse?

“And to my colleagues on both sides: this is the moment to decide whether this Committee continues to be a powerful bipartisan force. A force that I think we’ve all been proud of for a very long time. A force that is focused on safety, economic strength, and national security—focused on leading the world in research and development, and countering China and others with our soft power and our military power.

“Every single member of this committee knows what we are risking by letting this administration tear down so much.

“On USAID and other programs, we can always talk about how we can make things work better and other reforms. I don’t think any of us are opposed to any of those considerations—we have been doing that in a bipartisan way for a long time. But that is not actually what Trump’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposes.”

Senator Murray began her questioning by pressing Secretary Rubio on the secretive deal the United States inked with El Salvador to jail U.S. residents in the country’s notorious mega-prison, stating: “Will you share the text and details with my staff of your agreement with El Salvador and any other similar arrangements, including the funding details that we need to have?”

Secretary Rubio ignored the question, defending his Department’s actions and falsely claiming he’s provided transparency to Congress, stating in part: “We’ve done nothing that’s illegal… We’ve answered questions repeatedly. We get hundreds of questions a day. We respond [to] them as quickly as possible.”

“Mr. Secretary, I will tell you we are here because we need the information so that we can write our budget and in a bipartisan way move forward,” Senator Murray responded.

“Well, you’ll have the information you need to write a budget,” Secretary Rubio interrupted.

Okay, so will we get the details on the El Salvador arrangement?” Senator Murray pressed.

“Which El Salvador arrangement?” Secretary Rudio dodged.

“Your agreement that you’ve made with them [to detain people the U.S. sends there],” Senator Murray pressed.

“What agreement?” replied Secretary Rubio, in part, ducking the question.

“The funding details, we have not gotten. We need to see what the costs are,” Senator Murray responded.

Secretary Rubio again dodged the question, refusing to acknowledge an agreement or to confirm he’d share its details while confirming the U.S. has indeed paid El Salvador. He stated in part: “We’ve provided them law enforcement assistance. …. They have the right to spend that money any way they wish, but they did us a big favor…” He then falsely claimed the U.S. has not sent U.S. residents to El Salvador.

Senator Murray pressed again: “I’m asking you whether we can see the details of the arrangements, including the funding details.”

“I’m giving you the details. The arrangements are, we provide law enforcement funding to El Salvador, among other countries. How they choose to spend that money entirely is up to them,” Secretary Rubio deflected.

Senator Murray moved on, “I’ll take that as a no. Can you give me the details on the 200 plus offices you’re proposing to eliminate? We need that. Can I get your commitment to giving us those?”

“Sure, of course. That’s part of our reorg,” replied Secretary Rubio, who thus far has failed to provide the details to the Committee or Congress.

“How about the details and justifications of your proposed rescissions from programs you claim are out of alignment with administration priorities. Are we going to get the details of that funding priorities?” asked Senator Murray.

“On rescissions and empowerment, things of this nature? That’s obviously an OMB function, and I would talk to them about that, what’s going to go on with that money. I can tell you the contracts we canceled. And I can list to you the contracts we canceled and the rationale why, because I went through them myself,” replied Secretary Rubio.

Senator Murray followed up, “Will you get those to us—like today?”

Secretary Rubio did not provide a straight answer. Murray then pressed again on the need for transparency and more details, and Secretary Rubio ultimately committed: “Sure, you’re going to have all that information.”

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Experts and Scientists Assess China’s Economic Growth Points in 2025 (Part 1): Service Consumption Becomes a New Bright Spot

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Xia Jiechang, Research Fellow at the National Academy of Economic Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Consumption is the foundation of economic development. Since this year, various departments in various regions have been steadily promoting special promotions to promote consumption growth, and have been making efforts to expand the scope of trade-in consumer goods renewal, which has led to a steady release of consumption potential and further strengthening the main role of consumption in the country’s economic growth. In the first quarter, final consumption expenditures stimulated GDP growth by 2.8 percentage points, accounting for more than half of the total economic growth. In particular, service consumption has become a new highlight in China’s population consumption and a new impetus for the country’s economic growth.

Service consumption mainly includes consumer spending on intangible services, including health care, education and training, tourism and leisure, financial services, culture and entertainment, etc. It covers a wide range of fields and is not only an important support for improving people’s well-being, but also an important direction for optimizing and improving the consumption structure. Since this year, China has made concerted efforts on both the supply and demand sides to put forward a series of policies to promote service consumption. Through vigorous policy promotion, relevant economic entities have expanded the range of services offered and improved their quality, thereby laying a solid foundation for the growth of service consumption and better meeting people’s needs for customized and high-quality services.

In the process of expanding and upgrading service consumption, digital technologies are beginning to play an important supporting role. On the one hand, the analysis and processing, in-depth processing and specific application of huge amounts of information through digital technologies have served as an incentive for expanding the scale of service consumption, optimizing the structure of service consumption and improving the quality of consumer goods in the service sector. On the other hand, digital technologies have greatly contributed to the intensive development of new-type service consumption, effectively improving the consumer experience of the population.
