  • MIL-OSI Security: Former Coach and Missouri Middle School Teacher Sentenced for Coercing, Enticing, and Sexually Abusing a Minor Child

    TULSA, Okla. – A former coach and middle school teacher was sentenced today for six counts related to child exploitation and sexual abuse of a minor child, announced U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. 

    U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill sentenced Ronald Dale Sanders, 57, of Belton, Missouri, for Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct, Sexual Abuse of a Minor in Indian Country, Abusive Sexual Contact with a Minor in Indian Country, Tampering with Evidence by Corrupt Persuasion, Coercion and Enticement of a Minor, and Production of Child Pornography.

    Judge Hill ordered Sanders to serve 360 months’ imprisonment, followed by lifetime supervision. Upon his release, Sanders will also be required to register as a sex offender.

    “Sanders is a dangerous child predator and every parent’s worst nightmare,” said U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. “His career in teaching and coaching put him in a position to manipulate and exploit a minor child and their family to fulfill his sexual desires.”

    “As a teacher, the defendant held a position of trust in the eyes of his victim and the community. He violated that trust by exploiting a former student for his own sexual gratification,” said FBI Oklahoma City Acting Special Agent in Charge Joe Ogden. “There is no place in our society for predators like Ronald Sanders, and the FBI will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to ensure they face justice.”

    On several occasions between August 2023 and October 2023, Sanders admitted to driving from Missouri to Oklahoma to engage in sexual acts with a 14-year-old. Court records show that Sanders began messaging with a former 6th-grade student through social media. The messages quickly turned into inappropriate sexual conversations, and he coerced the minor child to send him sexually explicit photos. Sanders manipulated the minor child into believing that they were in a relationship and to delete messages or deny their relationship if anyone asked. He purchased gifts for the minor child, including lingerie and a ring with Sanders’ initials on it.

    Court records show that Sanders’ employment career included teaching special education, middle school education, and coaching boys’ and girls’ teams. He used that background to insert himself into the minor child’s life by claiming he was a tutor and befriending the child’s family, attending school football games, and visiting the minor child during school. In October, one of the minor child’s parents caught Sanders outside their house late at night. When the parent attempted to confront Sanders, he hit their vehicle and sped off. The parent followed Sanders and called 911.

    Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol pulled over Sanders. He had alcohol and sex toys inside his vehicle. The investigation revealed that Sanders was blatant in his pursuit of the minor child and that he had 1,000’s of messages with the minor child that contained sexually explicit material.

    Sanders will remain in custody pending transfer to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

    The FBI, the Miami Police Department, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated the case. Miami Public Schools played a significant role in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alicia Hockenbury and Valeria Luster prosecuted the case.

    This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.     During the Tour de France, athletes have to maintain a constant speed while bike riding for dozens of miles through cold rains and summer heat. These cyclists need gear that adapts to the different environments they encounter. One company is using a material with NASA origins to ensure these athletes stay comfortable while taking their grand tours.
    Phase-change materials use basic properties of matter to maintain a steady temperature. When a substance melts from a solid to a liquid, the material absorbs heat, and when it becomes solid again, it releases that heat. In the 1980s, Triangle Research Corporation received a NASA Small Business Innovation Research award to explore how phase-change materials could be incorporated into textiles to control temperatures in spacesuit gloves. By placing phase-change materials in small capsules woven throughout a textile, these temperature-regulating properties can be tuned to the comfort of the human body. While these textiles weren’t incorporated into any gloves flown on NASA missions, they formed the basis for a new product, sold under the name Outlast.
    Outlast has since become one of the most widely distributed temperature-regulating fabrics, found in products such as bedding, loungewear, and office chairs. It has seen especially extensive use in activewear, ranging from jogging clothes to professional sports gear. 
    Founded in 2001 and based in Fréjus, France, the company Ekoï makes clothing and accessories for cyclists, particularly those who bike competitively. The company first encountered Outlast at the Performance Days fabric trade fair in Munich, Germany, and was impressed with its capabilities as well as its NASA heritage.
    “When you say NASA, it’s always impressive.” said Celine Milan, director of textiles at Ekoï. “At the beginning we were even saying in here in our offices, ‘Wow, this technology was developed by NASA.’ It’s on another level.”
    Ekoi’s Outlast line officially launched in July 2022, during that year’s Tour de France. Over the course of that race, the company found it improved cyclists’ performance in the event’s mountain stages, where elevation changes mean wide swings in temperature. It also improved athletes’ aerodynamics, as their jerseys could stay closed in warmer environments, rather than opening them to let in wind.
    Today, Ekoï sells several products that incorporate Outlast materials, including jerseys, gloves, and socks. These products are internationally known for their NASA heritage. Whether engineering for astronaut’s comfort in space or competitive athletes, NASA aims for excellence.

    In 2019, the University of Montana allowed a runner named June Eastwood, a biological male who had adopted a female identity, to compete against women. Among Eastwood’s competitors were two young women attending Idaho State University, Madison Kenyon and Mary Kate Marshall, who were unjustly defeated by Eastwood on multiple occasions. 
    The following year, the Idaho Legislature passed HB 500, making Idaho the first state in the nation to protect women and girls from losing to men in their own sports.
    The years since have brought both setbacks and breakthroughs. Gender identity activists at the ACLU immediately sued Idaho to block the law, and so far, the courts have agreed. Meanwhile, cases like UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas — who became the first man to win an NCAA women’s swimming title — kept the national debate intensifying.
    By the 2024 election, President Trump made this issue a centerpiece of his campaign, exposing the Democratic Party’s radical stance on gender identity issues. His victory paved the way for this February’s executive order with a clear message echoing Idaho’s law: Men don’t belong in women’s sports.
    The mounting cases of men taking medals from women shifted public opinion decisively. A New York Times/Ipsos poll revealed that 79 percent of Americans agree that women’s sports should be for women only. This groundswell of support gave Trump’s executive order real momentum, prompting even the NCAA to abandon its policy allowing males to compete against women.
    Yet despite this national shift, Idaho remains unable to enforce its own pioneering law, for now. It’s time to end this historic violation of equal opportunity for women and let Idaho guarantee fairness to all of our female athletes.
    Idaho wasn’t alone in this fight. West Virginia passed similar protections, and predictably, the ACLU sued to block its law, too. Recognizing the need for national clarity, both states joined with attorneys at Alliance Defending Freedom to petition the Supreme Court. On July 3 — the 135th anniversary of Idaho’s statehood — the court granted review in both cases, giving us the chance to secure nationwide fairness for women and girls who simply want to compete on a level playing field.
    This is an important moment for all of us who are fighting to preserve safety, dignity, and fair competition in women’s sports. While Trump’s executive order pushed the ball forward for branches of the federal government, the Supreme Court’s pending review in Little v. Hecox (Idaho’s case) and West Virginia v. BPJ leaves open the question of whether states can pass laws that preserve the integrity of women’s sports.
    The Supreme Court’s recent decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti offers an encouraging precedent. That ruling upheld Tennessee’s law preventing medical professionals from subjecting children to dangerous, experimental transition drugs and surgeries. That decision also allowed Idaho to enforce our own child-protection law.
    However, Skrmetti left the women’s sports question unresolved. Both Idaho and West Virginia urged the court to address this gap by reviewing our cases alongside that precedent. The justices’ decision to grant review suggests they recognized the need for comprehensive clarity.
    If the Supreme Court agrees with our arguments, that means states will be free to ensure female athletes enjoy a level playing field for competition. Girls will once again be free to become champions in their own sports and pursue collegiate and professional opportunities without fear of losing to the opposite sex.
    We couldn’t have gotten here without the brave women who took a stance for their sports, such as the four high school athletes in Connecticut who said enough is enough, or the young women in West Virginia who intervened to preserve their state’s law, or the aforementioned Madison and Mary Kate, who intervened to protect Idaho’s law.
    There’s still much more work to be done before we can fully guarantee that women’s sports are fully protected, but there are many signs of hope for a brighter future. As we’ve recently seen, UPenn, which had allowed a male to compete and steal medals from women, changed its tune (thanks to pressure by the Trump administration) by apologizing and preventing any more men from competing and restoring the records of female athletes affected by his participation.
    By granting our cases, the Supreme Court is giving West Virginia, Idaho, and many other states the opportunity to cross the finish line. But more importantly, it’s giving every girl in America a fair chance to win.

    Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday addressed a felicitation ceremony in New Delhi to honor the Indian Police and Fire Brigade contingent for their remarkable performance at the 21st World Police and Fire Games 2025, held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. The Indian team secured an impressive 613 medals, earning praise from Shri Shah for making the nation proud. The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Director of the Intelligence Bureau and the Special Secretary (Internal Security) of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    Shah announced that an incentive of ₹4,38,85,000 was awarded to the contingent for their outstanding achievement. He emphasized the significance of the World Police and Fire Games, noting that it is the world’s largest sporting event after the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, with nearly 10,000 athletes participating globally. The Home Minister expressed pride in India’s strong performance, which he said reflects the potential of the country’s 1.4 billion citizens.

    Looking ahead, Shah set ambitious goals for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, which will be hosted in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kevadia in Gujarat. He urged every athlete to aim for a medal with the focus and determination of the mythological archer Arjun. He stressed the importance of participation, stating that while winning is crucial, the spirit of striving for excellence is what defines success. The Home Minister encouraged the All India Police Sports Control Board to ensure at least one athlete from every police force participates in 2029, with each team targeting at least three medals to surpass the current record.

    Shah highlighted the Modi government’s efforts to promote sports across India, including bids to host the 2036 Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. He noted that the sports budget has increased fivefold over the past decade, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering a sports culture. Initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) support around 3,000 athletes with a monthly stipend of ₹50,000 to prepare for the 2036 Olympics, while the Fit India Movement has tripled India’s medal tally in major global events like the Olympics, Paralympics, and Asian Games. Shri Shah expressed confidence that India will rank among the top five nations in the 2036 Olympics medal tally.

    The Home Minister also underscored the role of sports in building resilience and teamwork, particularly for police personnel. He urged Directors General of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to foster a sporting culture by starting mornings with parades and spending evenings playing sports with subordinates to relieve stress and enhance performance. He emphasized that sports teach broad thinking and cultivate a habit of accepting defeat while striving for victory.

    To support sports within security forces, Shah outlined recent initiatives by the Ministry of Home Affairs, including changes in recruitment rules for talent identification, the formation of 25 outdoor sports teams in each force, and the creation of combined CAPF teams. The proposed National Sports Bill will recognize state police forces, allowing them to participate as single units in national sporting events. Additionally, he called for world-class coaching and specialized medical training for sports injuries to prepare Indian police teams for global competitions, assuring full support from the Ministry of Sports.

  • MIL-OSI Africa: The #AfricaEducatesHer Campaign – African Union’s International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU CIEFFA) Field Visit in Seychelles

    The African Union’s International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU CIEFFA) has begun a 3-day field visit to Seychelles as part of its monitoring and evaluation efforts for the implementation of the #AfricaEducatesHer Campaign. This visit, which takes place from 16th – 18th July 2025, in Victoria, aims to gauge the status of girls’ education, assess the effectiveness of re-integration mechanisms, including policies and programs for Out-of-school girls and evaluate the implementation status of the #AfricaEducatesHer campaign, highlighting its impact, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

    AU CIEFFA delegates will also utilise the opportunity to examine the impact of national investments on girls’ education and the sustainability of #AfricaEducatesHer campaign initiatives and provide technical assistance to address harmful socio-cultural norms and gender-based violence (GBV), notably school-related GBV.

    The Minister of Education, H.E. Dr Justin Valentin, while officially welcoming the AU CIEFFA delegation, expressed his appreciation for the timely visit. He commended the work of CIEFFA in promoting girls and women’s education on the continent. He renewed Seychelles’ commitment to providing education opportunities for all children across all levels in the country, including STEAM opportunities. “Seychelles is working towards an inclusive education while tackling the issue of dropouts of boys from the education system”, he stated.

    Seychelles joined the second phase of the #AfricaEducatesHer campaign in October 2024. The campaign was launched by the Ministry of Education to reaffirm the country’s engagement to ensuring inclusive and equitable education for girls. Challenges identified include school dropouts, mental health issues, and teenage pregnancies, which the Campaign seeks to address. During the visit, the Minister of Education for Seychelles, H.E. Dr Valentin, was handed the trophy of recognition for being one of the countries that have successfully launched and are implementing programmes under the Campaign.

    The #AfricaEducatesHer has now been launched in 14 AU Member States, with other Member States pledging to launch the campaign in their respective countries.

    The AU CIEFFA delegation was also received by the Principal Secretary from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family. As part of the visit, the team visited several schools and conducted a workshop on Gender-Responsive Education Planning and Policy Analysis, engaging key education stakeholders in Seychelles to strengthen national efforts toward inclusive and equitable education for girls.

  • MIL-OSI Submissions: Lions rugby tour: why visual training, including juggling, can be a secret weapon in elite sports

    Much of the pre-series attention on the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia has been on injuries, player omissions and personal rivalries.

    One of those rivalries involves the Australian sensation Joseph-Akuso Suaalii facing Lions centre player, Sione Tuipulotu, with whom he had a fiery encounter in a match last year.

    Suaalii only switched codes from rugby league to rugby union in 2023 and has just five international caps to his name. But despite his lack of union experience, he has been catching attention lately for more than just his powerful runs and physicality. In recent weeks, Suaalii’s unusual pre-match warm-up has also sparked curiosity, most notably, his use of juggling and peripheral awareness drills to prepare his visual system.

    For many spectators, seeing a player showing off their juggling skills is more suited to a circus performance than international rugby. But there is science behind his bizarre approach. This preparation could be giving him an edge the Lions should fear.

    Growing evidence

    Visual performance in elite sport remains an under-applied area of sport science, yet the evidence for its effectiveness is growing.

    My own research has found that a county cricket team which underwent six weeks of visual training improved their basic cricket skills more than a control group which did extra cricket skills exercises. This demonstrates that we need to be looking beyond the confines of the sport itself to bring about maximal performance.

    Visual skill in sport is about more than just 20/20 vision. Each sport has its own specific demands, and rugby requires skills such as peripheral awareness, depth perception, rapid eye movement, reaction speed, dynamic visual acuity and eye-body coordination.

    Combining these visual skills will allow the most accurate information to be sent to the brain for processing – helping players to make the best decisions, even under intense pressure and high levels of fatigue.

    By using exercises such as juggling, Suaalii is training several of these visual skills at once. Juggling requires excellent eye-body coordination, the use of the peripheral system and reaction speed. These are all skills which are also used in rugby for catching high balls kicked by opponents, reading attacking threats and spotting the movement of teammates and opposition players.

    Juggling has also been shown to bring about positive structural changes in the human brain – particularly in areas linked to processing visual information – and integrating this with motor control.

    This demonstrates that this relatively simple exercise can lead to improvements not only in the eyes, but also the brain. In rugby, the visual array will be constantly changing. A shift in the defensive line, a looping support run, a player slightly slow to recover from a ruck, or a spiralling high kick – the ability to spot, process and respond to these visual cues can be the difference between success and failure.

    Suaalii is by no means the first rugby player to train his visual system. Former coach Clive Woodward famously brought in a visual performance coach to work with the England team – and they went on to win the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

    I also worked with the Harlequins rugby team in the English Premiership as a visual performance coach. We won three trophies in my first three seasons with the team, which is known for free flowing, creative play. This style of play places extremely high demands on the players’ visual systems.

    Lions test series

    So what particular visual skills can you look out for over this Lions test series and how might they impact the outcome?

    When defending close to their own try line, players should be scanning across the width of the pitch to ensure that they do not become outnumbered on either side of the field. Conversely, the attackers should be making rapid scans to quickly identify any mismatch (for example, a slow front row forward versus a swift and agile winger) they can take advantage of.

    In these situations, players can often focus too much on the ball, allowing opposition players to craftily reposition themselves unseen. The best players will, wherever possible, be looking at everything, everywhere, all at once, improving their spatial awareness and enabling them to maintain an overview of the game in their minds.

    To catch a kicked spiralling highball, a fullback or winger needs exceptional tracking ability and depth perception. Players in this situation are sometimes let down by “convergence issues”, where as the eyes track an object moving towards them, they can drift outwards or become misaligned. This can cause players to mistime their jump, or for the ball to hit their chest before being caught, wasting vital milliseconds. Training these convergence issues has been shown to bring about improvements in sports performance.

    As a scrum-half is collecting the ball from a breakdown, they need quickly to scan the positions of teammates on either side of them, and be aware of the depth of the defensive line. Having this visual information will lead to better decisions and creating faster attacking opportunities.

    A crunching tackle may seem like a purely strength-based skill. But to ensure it is both perfectly timed and legal, a defender must perfectly anticipate the speed and direction of the oncoming player. They can then use this information to precisely position their own body to impart their full momentum, while using their reaction speed to make last-second adjustments to ensure they do not put their opponent in danger.

    Subtle visual advantages, honed through practice, can influence these moments. During this test series, they may well be the difference between winning and losing. Suaalii’s juggling may seem better suited to the circus, but it could be the secret weapon Australia need to secure the series.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) delivered a speech on the Senate floor celebrating the career and legacy of West Virginia University’s (WVU) outgoing president Dr. Gordon Gee.

    Dr. Gee, who retired this week, dedicated nearly two decades of his life to the service of West Virginia, where he saw the university through many victories and challenges. Dr. Gee worked tirelessly to make education in West Virginia more accessible and obtainable, partnered with Marshall University president Brad Smith to keep the best and brightest students in West Virginia after graduation, and oversaw the addition of 20 hospitals under the WVU Medicine umbrella.

    Senator Capito’s remarks as prepared for delivery: 

    “Mr. President, 

    “I rise today to honor a dear friend of mine, who has dedicated nearly two decades of his life to the service of our great state of West Virginia, and, to the betterment of our students seeking higher education.

    “The man who has been president of more universities than anyone else in the entire world!

    “Doctor E. Gordon Gee, President of West Virginia University, who retired this week.

    “Dr. Gee, or Gordon as we call him, was fortunate to serve two tenures as President of WVU,

    “First from 1981 to 1985, and again from 2013 to 2025.

    “Where he brought his strong desire for community, and love of education, to our Home Among the Hills in Morgantown.

    “I know I speak for everyone when I say how much we will miss his signature bow tie—I believe he has thousands, his love for athletics and impact within the NCAA—he even offered to suit up for the WVU football team, although he’s quick to admit he isn’t much of an athlete—his infectious energy, and his thoughtful guidance.

    “His legacy will be felt at WVU for generations to come.

    “To understand the impact that Gordon has made on West Virginia, I must expand on what WVU means to our state and people far outside our borders.

    “WVU was established in 1867, initially named the Agricultural College of West Virginia, and became our state’s first public land-grant university.

    “Since then, individuals from across our state, country, and world have become Mountaineers – including many members of my own family.

    “There are a couple things that I must note about WVU:

    “First, Mountaineers are everywhere.

    “There isn’t a town across West Virginia, or an airport across our country, where you won’t see the trademark blue and gold flying WV logo.

    “The Mountaineers serve as a point of pride for our state and bring recognition to the wonderful people, passion, culture, and history that we have in West Virginia.

    “Second, Mountaineers are changing the world.

    “Across WVU’s thirteen colleges and schools, whether it be engineering, agriculture, law, or medicine, Mountaineers are making a difference.

    “WVU is our state’s only institution to hold the title of an R-1 University, the benchmark that recognizes exceptional research capacity.

    “This is a status that WVU received in 2016 under Gordon’s leadership.

    “Gordon’s connection to West Virginia isn’t just a professional one. It’s a personal one too.

    “He chose to return to West Virginia not once, but twice, because he believes in West Virginia, our people, and WVU.

    “When he speaks of his love and passion for our state, it is unmistakenly heartfelt.

    “Gordon believes in the power of education, and that belief has left its mark not only on Morgantown, but across every corner of our great state, and honestly, across our entire nation.

    “When Gordon became President of WVU the first time in 1981, he was only 37 years old.

    “When he returned to Blaney House in 2013, he came back seasoned, with the experience and perspective that WVU needed.

    “Through the foundation of his four pillars—education, health care, prosperity, and purpose—Gordon has guided WVU through times both successful and tumultuous—including through a global pandemic—made education for our children in West Virginia more accessible and obtainable, and moved our state towards one of his principles that West Virginians should not have to leave our state’s borders to receive the health services they deserve.

    “The impact that Gordon has made is apparent in many areas, but particularly noteworthy is the impact he has made through the continued expansion of WVU Medicine.

    “As the Chairman of the WVU Medicine Board of Directors, Gordon oversaw the addition of 20 hospitals under the WVU Medicine umbrella that span across our state,

    “And increased the capacity and research support for WVU’s world class facilities like the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, Cancer Institute, Heart and Vascular Institute, and the new Children’s hospital.

    “As West Virginia’s Senator, I’ve had the privilege to work with the wonderful and incredibly impressive people of WVU Medicine and visit these facilities many times.

    “Let me tell you, they are on the cutting edge of medical advancements that will saves live and change our world.

    “Gordon’s leadership has been a critical part of this success, and it’s fitting that his recently finished portrait will live on the WVU Medicine campus.

    “Although Gordon was born in Utah, he is the first to tell you that he is a ‘born-again’ West Virginian.

    “He has made our state his home, and the effort and energy he puts toward benefiting the lives of his fellow West Virginians is evident.

    “Two of Gordon’s four pillars that I mentioned earlier—purpose and prosperity—relate directly to economic development in our state.

    “The duo also worked together to establish ‘Ascend West Virginia,’ which has been a successful effort to attract remote workers to West Virginia’s mountains, highlighting the wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities our state offers to young professionals and their families.

    “Additionally, Gordon has made it a priority to visit and spend time in all 55 of West Virginia’s counties, showing the excellent work of the WVU Extension services, designed to build prosperity, enhance educational opportunities, improve health, and create purpose in communities across the entirety of our state.

    “While Gordon’s presence as WVU President will be missed, we know that he will continue to make a difference in West Virginia.

    “And, as I said when I started this speech, the legacy he has built will continue to be felt for generations to come.

    “I know that I join Gordon and our state when I say we look forward to leadership and experience that the new WVU president, Michael Benson, brings to Morgantown.

    “In a recent article published by WVU Magazine, I found the advice that Gordon gave to his successor to be wise, true, and eloquent:

    “’If you love the state and its people, they will love you back.’

    “That has certainly been the case for Doctor E. Gordon Gee, and the time he has spent in Morgantown.

    “On a personal note, Charlie and I have been the recipients of emails, texts, and letters from Gordon that have lifted us up in tough times, and in good times as well.

    “I have leaned on Gordon’s counsel as I’ve made difficult decisions, and he has always taken the time to give me thoughtful advice.

    “Both Charlie and I can safely say that our lives have been touched by Gordon, and by the friendship we have fostered with him and Laurie.

    “Here in the U.S. Senate, there are members who may have Gordon on speed-dial, but I am eternally grateful that the West Virginians are the ones who get to claim him!

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: HK’s appeal showcased in Qingdao

    The Immersive Hong Kong roving exhibition, showcasing Hong Kong’s diversity and its latest developments, opened in Qingdao.

     

    Themed “Hong Kong – Where the World Looks Ahead”, the exhibition invites visitors from Qingdao and elsewhere in Shandong to explore Hong Kong’s unique opportunities and potential in tourism, education, business and investment.

     

    It comprises five thematic zones: Financial Bridgehead; I&T Brain Bank’ Blossoming Creativity; Diversity & Greenery; and Buzzing Sports Action. These feature interactive art projections, light box installations and naked-eye 3D displays, all representing the distinctive appeal of Hong Kong.

     

    At today’s opening ceremony, Director of Information Services Apollonia Liu explained that as 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt & Road Summit – which is hosted each year by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region – three Belt & Road node cities on the Mainland were specially selected as locations for this year’s Immersive Hong Kong exhibition.

     

    The exhibition visited Shanghai last month. Qingdao is the second stop, and will be followed by Chengdu.

     

    Mrs Liu expressed hope that the exhibition will provide an opportunity for Qingdao residents to experience Hong Kong’s charm and spark their interest in visiting the city.

     

    Introducing the exhibition’s highlights, Mrs Liu said the Buzzing Sports Action zone serves as pre-event publicity for the 15th National Games, due to be co-hosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau in November. She remarked that Hong Kong’s cultural and tourism appeal, and various other developments in the city, are showcased in the exhibition through naked-eye 3D displays and interactive games.

     

    With Qingdao having been part of Hong Kong’s Individual Visit Scheme since March last year, Mrs Liu stressed that in addition to boosting tourism-related industries in Hong Kong, the scheme has been successful in fostering cultural integration and people-to-people bonds between Qingdao and Hong Kong.

     

    As the two cities are linked by multiple direct flights operating daily, an excellent foundation has been laid for deepening tourism co-operation, promoting the sharing of resources and facilitating the two-way flow of visitors, she added.

     

    The Immersive Hong Kong roving exhibition, organised by the Information Services Department, runs from today to July 27 at Lion Mall in Qingdao. Admission is free.

    Mandela’s Legacy is Africa’s Responsibility

    As trees planted in Mandela’s honour grow at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, their roots symbolise the seeds of peace, resilience, and leadership sown in Africa.

    Now, the Youth Charter calls on African governments, ministries of youth and sport, national sports federations, and regional institutions, from the African Union to ECOWAS, SADC, and CAF, to scale up investment in youth and community-led development through sport.

    The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched a youth-led national movement titled ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ at the Youth Spiritual Summit in Varanasi, taking place from July 19–20. The initiative aims to harness the power of India’s youth—who make up over 65% of the population—to lead the charge against drug addiction and support the broader vision of a developed India.

    Set against the spiritual backdrop of the river Ganga, the event is designed to combine cultural engagement with policy dialogue, forming a collective resolve rooted in India’s traditions and moral heritage.

    The summit will see participation from key ministries such as Health, Social Justice, and Culture, as well as enforcement bodies like the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and medical institutions including AIIMS. Spiritual organisations from across the country are also contributing, creating a unified front that combines policy, community engagement, and moral guidance.

    Central to the summit is the Kashi Declaration, a roadmap for a sustained, youth-led anti-drug movement. Each session at the summit will generate an actionable plan, culminating in a final resolution that outlines specific targets, assigns responsibilities, and sets clear implementation timelines. Progress will be reviewed during the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (VBYLD 2026) to maintain accountability.

    Drawing inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s message of self-discipline and service to the nation, the summit underscores the role of spiritual and moral strength in tackling addiction. The government is calling on young citizens to not only reject harmful habits but to serve as leaders in their communities.

    Rosneft and the Ministry of Tourism of the Samara Region presented the second joint project for auto tourists “Zavolzhskie Gorizonty”. The route runs through the natural and cultural attractions of the Samara and Saratov Regions.

    The route presentation was organized at the Rosneft gas station in Samara, where the Company’s volunteers held a thematic quiz for car owners with useful prizes. During the presentation, the famous Russian racing driver of the LADA Sport ROSNEFT team Vladimir Sheshenin held an autograph session, during which everyone could take a joint photo with the famous athlete.

    Rosneft actively supports initiatives to develop domestic tourism and aims to create comfortable conditions for car travelers. Developing roadside service and improving the level of customer service provided at Rosneft filling stations is one of the Company’s priority areas of activity.

    The “Zavolzhskie Horizons” route starts in Samara, where the dacha of the merchant Golovkin is located. The building was built in the early 20th century in the Art Nouveau style and is a cultural heritage site. A distinctive feature of the house, located on a steep bank, is two life-size sculptures of elephants. They are clearly visible from ships passing along the Volga.

    On the way out of the capital of the province, travelers can visit the Vertoletka culture and recreation park, which is recognized as the best implemented public space project in Russia and has become the best observation deck in the city.     The route then leads to the Serebro Severa ethnographic center in the village of Yagodnoye, where guests can get acquainted with northern culture, visit a reindeer camp and a village with sled dogs. In ancient Syzran, tourists will meet history at the Spasskaya Tower, the only surviving structure of the 17th-century Syzran Kremlin, a cultural heritage site of federal significance.

    The journey along the route ends in Khvalynsk, Saratov Region, in the national park – the center of ecotourism, preserving rare species of flora and fauna, with its holy springs, eco-trails and thematic exhibitions and museums dedicated to representatives of flora and fauna.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: With the support of Rosneft, a Summer Project School has opened at the Moscow State University Gymnasium

    The ceremonial opening of the annual Summer Project School for students of Rosneft Classes took place at the University Gymnasium of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. The training will involve 80 tenth-graders from 15 regions of Russia – they passed a competitive selection, which included multi-stage testing and a distance learning course.

    The Summer Project School is a joint project of Rosneft and Moscow State University, created to support talented youth. The event is being held for the fourth time. The training helps schoolchildren acquire basic knowledge in the field of project and research activities, as well as practical skills in team development and implementation of projects, including in key areas of the Company’s activities.

    For two weeks, schoolchildren will work in project groups in four areas: mathematics, engineering, geology and natural science.          The “Immersive Hong Kong” roving exhibition, organised by the Information Services Department (ISD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government  to showcase the diversity and latest developments of Hong Kong through interactive art technology, opened in Qingdao today (July 18). 

         Co-organised by the Shandong Liaison Unit of the HKSAR Government, the exhibition, themed “Hong Kong – Where the World Looks Ahead”, invites visitors from Qingdao and the entire Shandong Province to explore the unique opportunities and potential for tourism, education, business and investment in Hong Kong.

         The exhibition enables visitors to delve into different virtual scenes representing the city, with a creative twist. The five thematic zones, namely “Financial Bridgehead”, “I&T Brain Bank”, “Blossoming Creativity”, “Diversity and Greenery” and “Buzzing Sports Action”, feature multiple interactive art projections, light box installations and naked-eye 3D displays, representing the distinctive appeal of Hong Kong.

         Visitors may also enjoy Hong Kong’s vibrant and colourful skyline, illustrated by Hong Kong artist Messy Desk (Jane Lee), at a photo corner in the venue. Promotional videos on Hong Kong and digital panels presenting information about the city, as well as insights from Mainland companies about their experiences in Hong Kong, are also on display, highlighting why the city is one of the most desirable places to visit, study, live, work and invest.

         Speaking at the opening ceremony today, the Director of Information Services, Mrs Apollonia Liu, said that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Summit organised by the HKSAR, and that three node cities along the Belt and Road on the Mainland were specially selected to hold the exhibition. The first stop was successfully held in Shanghai last month, attracting more than 180 000 visitors, while Qingdao is the second stop, to be followed by Chengdu. 

         She said, “The eligible cities of the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) expanded to Qingdao in March last year, enabling residents of Qingdao to explore Hong Kong in a more flexible and convenient manner. In addition to deepening exchanges and fostering cultural integration and people-to-people bonds between the two cities, IVS tourists also represent an important force in driving the business of tourism-related industries in Hong Kong.”

         Mrs Liu added that, although Hong Kong and Qingdao are far apart geographically, the two cities are in fact within arm’s reach. They are linked by multiple direct flights operating daily, with a flight time of just over three hours. This offers an excellent foundation for the two cities to further deepen tourism co-operation, promote resource sharing, and facilitate the two-way flow of visitors.

         Introducing the highlights of the exhibition, Mrs Liu said a “Buzzing Sports Action” thematic zone has been set up, serving as pre-event publicity for the 15th National Games to be cohosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macao in November this year. The cultural and tourism appeal, as well as the latest developments of Hong Kong, is also shown in a comprehensive manner through naked-eye 3D displays and interactive games.

         Mrs Liu expressed hope that the exhibition would provide an opportunity for friends from Qingdao to experience Hong Kong’s charm from different aspects, sparking their interest to learn more about Hong Kong and visit the city.

         To give Qingdao audiences a taste of Hong Kong’s cultural offerings, a wind instrument performance by two young Hong Kong music talents – the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Suona Principal Ma Wai-him and pianist Aaron Leung – will be staged at the exhibition venue on July 19 and 20. 

         During the exhibition, an interactive game, “Snap a cool shot @Immersive Hong Kong”, will offer attractive prizes sponsored by Cathay Pacific for two winners. The winner of the Grand Prize will receive a pair of round-trip business class air tickets from Qingdao to Hong Kong, while the runner-up will receive a pair of round-trip economy class air tickets on the same itinerary.

         The exhibition is being held at Lion Mall, a major shopping centre in Qingdao, until July 27. Admission is free.

    The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is set to launch a two-day Youth Spiritual Summit on the theme ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ from July 19 at the Rudraksh Convention Centre in Varanasi. The summit aims to harness spiritual values and youth leadership in the fight against drug abuse, marking the beginning of a nationwide youth-led movement toward a drug-free India.

    More than 500 youth delegates representing over 100 spiritual and socio-cultural organisations from across the country are expected to attend the summit. 

    Set against the spiritual backdrop of the River Ganga, the event is designed to combine cultural engagement with policy dialogue, forming a collective resolve rooted in India’s traditions and moral heritage.

    The event will be attended by a host of dignitaries including Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla; Union Ministers Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Dr. Virendra Kumar; Ministers of State Nityanand Rai and Raksha Nikhil Khadse; and senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh government, including ministers Girish Yadav, Asim Arun, and Nitin Agarwal.

  • Sujeet Kalkal strikes gold at Budapest Wrestling Ranking Series

    Indian wrestler Sujeet Kalkal on Thursday clinched the gold medal in the 65kg men’s freestyle category at the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial 2025 wrestling tournament in Budapest, Hungary.

    In the final of the 65kg men’s freestyle category, Sujeet delivered a clinical performance to defeat four-time European medallist Ali Rahimzade of Azerbaijan 5-1. His triumph marked India’s first gold medal in wrestling at any of the Ranking Series events this year. Earlier, Indian grapplers had returned empty-handed from the tournaments in Amman and Mongolia, according to Olympics.com.

    In the first period of the final, Sujeet conceded an activity point, but he raised the tempo in the second period to complete two takedowns. He secured another activity point en route to a commanding victory in the gold medal bout.

    Sujeet’s journey to the final was equally impressive. He began with a dominant 11-0 win over Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Islam Dudaev of Albania in the round of 16. He then overwhelmed European silver medallist Khamzat Arsamerzouev of France in the quarter-finals, before stamping his authority with a 6-1 win over Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia in the semi-finals.

    India added another medal in the men’s 57kg category, where Rahul clinched bronze with a 4-0 victory over Germany’s Niklas Stechele. Earlier, he had defeated Kim Sung-gwon of the Republic of Korea 5-3 in the quarter-finals, before narrowly losing a hard-fought semi-final 7-6 to the USA’s Luke Joseph Lilledahl.

    Meanwhile, India’s Udit and Vicky suffered defeats in the repechage rounds of the 61kg and 97kg divisions, respectively. The Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial in Budapest is the fourth and final wrestling Ranking Series tournament of the year.

    Ranking points earned at this event will help wrestlers secure better seedings for the World Wrestling Championships, scheduled to be held in Zagreb, Croatia, in September later this year.

    India fielded wrestlers in the men’s and women’s freestyle, as well as Greco-Roman, categories at the ongoing Budapest meet, which will conclude on Sunday.

    Good morning. As they say, weathering choppy waters is perhaps the trick of the trade of the maritime industry. So, here we are, a trail to our professionalism. It is my great pleasure to join you all today at the completion ceremony of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza. Even despite the weather, it is worth taking a good look at our anchor and hearing what Richard will have to say later, introducing what the Anchor’s importance is.  
     
    Founded in 2005, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has long been preserving and promoting the unique maritime history and culture of Hong Kong. As it approaches its 20th anniversary this year, the Maritime Museum’s journey has been remarkable. From its origins at Murray House in Stanley to its current home at Central Pier No. 8, the Museum has evolved into a cultural treasure, showcasing an impressive collection of maritime heritage, welcoming around 100 000 visitors every year, and establishing itself as a vital maritime landmark in Hong Kong over the past two decades. I am also glad to know that the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has been increasingly popular among tourists, with over 20 000 visitors from the Mainland of China and overseas recorded just last year.
     
    Today, I am delighted to witness the completion of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza, one of the Chief Executive’s Community Projects. This milestone, achieved after years of dedicated efforts, represents an exciting new chapter in the development of the Museum. Featuring a striking anchor about 7 metres high and a ship-like pavilion, the Anchor Plaza will provide a brand-new public learning space, inviting visitors to explore Hong Kong’s maritime culture while adding yet another vibrant attraction to the iconic Victoria Harbour. I believe that the Anchor Plaza will draw more people to come and appreciate Hong Kong’s unique history and culture as a port city.
     
    The next part of my speech is actually to give you an idea of what we give to have the museum and the support to the arts and culture scenes. But I think you would rather hear from Richard the story of the Anchor than listen to my speech. So I’m sure when I issue it as the press release, you will be able to learn about it.
     
    As you are all aware, the Government has been sparing no effort in fostering the development of arts and culture in recent years. Museums play an important role in preserving and disseminating cultural heritage. Apart from continuously improving public museum services, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department have been actively providing robust support for private institutions like the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. From thematic exhibitions like “Across Victoria Harbour” that revisit the past of Hong Kong, to the upcoming 2025 Forum for Asia-Pacific Maritime Culture to be held at the Museum, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has played an integral role in enriching Hong Kong’s cultural landscape and fostering international cultural exchange that complements the Government’s work in a truly meaningful way.
     
    In addition to support from the Government, the successful completion of the great Anchor Plaza and the remarkable achievements of the Museum would not be possible without the dedication of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum team and the unwavering support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, other patrons of the Museum, and the wider community. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this project and to the ongoing growth of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.     The 26th “Beibei Cup” Youth (U12 Boys) Football Tournament 2025 kicked off Wednesday in Fenghuang town, Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu province, with nearly 300 young players from China and abroad participating in a week of competition and cultural exchange.

    The tournament, co-hosted by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), the Chinese Football Association (CFA), and the Zhangjiagang Municipal People’s Government, was opened by Li Bin, vice chairwoman of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and CSCLF chairperson.

    Shen Beili, secretary of the CSCLF Party Leadership Group and CSCLF vice chairperson, emphasized the “Beibei Cup’s” enduring legacy since its inception in 1983. She highlighted its role in providing a key platform for young football enthusiasts to develop their skills, pursue their aspirations, and build vital life skills like teamwork and resilience.

    Han Wei, secretary of the Zhangjiagang Municipal Party Committee, emphasized the city’s commitment to youth football. He noted the tournament’s role in nurturing young talent for national teams and expressed Zhangjiagang’s goal to innovate youth football development. The aim, he stated, is to transform “Beibei Football” into a hub for cultivating young players’ dreams, a center for international youth football cultural exchange, and an “international sports calling card” for the city.

    The tournament runs from July 16 to 22, featuring 48 matches among 16 teams. Participants include top youth squads from 12 Chinese provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, as well as teams from South Korea and Thailand. Two foreign teams — Ulsan from South Korea and Muangthong United from Thailand — are making their debut appearances, highlighting the tournament’s expanding international reach.

    Beyond the competition, the event will also host an elite youth coaching training course and an elite player training camp, expanding investment in young football talent development.

    The opening ceremony featured performances by young people from Beijing and Zhangjiagang, showcasing traditional Chinese arts, including a Chinese drum show, chorus, traditional opera exercises, and a children’s medley of Heyang folk songs, designated as national intangible cultural heritage. The ceremony concluded with Chinese and international young players joining together to sing the tournament’s theme song, “Dream Chasing Youth.”

    Following the ceremony, a team from Zhejiang competed against the Beibei in an exhibition match. CFA Vice Chairman Yang Xu performed the ceremonial kickoff. Former “Beibei Cup” players Zhao Junzhe and Yang Chen, alongside Chinese Super League players Zuo Junjie and Xiao Xuhui, joined the young athletes on the field, providing a live coaching session for the young football stars.
