  • MIL-OSI Australia: International cricket in Canberra this summer

    Canberra will host two international cricket matches this summer.

    In the much-anticipated summer of cricket, featuring the next edition of the Ashes against England, 26 international matches will be played in 11 cities across Australia.

    For the first time in 17 years, there will be matches in every state and territory capital.

    The international season kicks off in August 2025 with a men’s ODI and T20I series against South Africa and concludes eight months later in March 2026 with a women’s test match against India.

    Australia to face India in Canberra

    Both the Australian men’s and women’s teams will take on India at Manuka Oval.

    The Men’s T20I Series v India match will be played on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.

    The men’s blockbuster white ball series will include the first five-match T20I series between the cricket heavyweights.

    The Women’s T20I Series v India will be played on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

    The Australian women will host a multiformat series against the rapidly emerging Indian team.

    Canberrans flocked to see international, domestic and local cricket played at Manuka Oval last summer.

    This included the most-ever attendees to a women’s international fixture played at Manuka Oval.

    Ticket details

    International ticket pre-sales will begin on Tuesday, 3 June. This is for fans who have registered through Cricket Australia.

    General public tickets will go on sale on Friday, 13 June.

    NEW YORK, May 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Brag House Holdings, Inc.     Michael Yencik, a third-year student at University of Florida on a pre-med track studying nutritional sciences, was crowned champion of the Brag Gators Gauntlet: Baseball Edition. Competing under the gamertag MrGittyGut, Yencik secured the top spot after consistently high placements across all heats and a standout performance in the final heat. “It was a surreal experience,” said MrGittyGut, when asked about this activation and how it ties into the Gators spirit and college baseball.     Bin Collections & Recycling Centres Operating as Normal Over May Bank Holiday

    Derry City and Strabane District Council is reminding residents that bin collections and Recycling Centres will continue as normal on the upcoming May Bank Holiday, Monday 26th May 2025.

    Residents are advised to leave out their bins as usual on collection day. The Council is encouraging everyone to stay committed to recycling by using Blue and Brown bins correctly, helping reduce household waste over the holiday weekend.

    Please note that Council offices on Strand Road, Derry, and Derry Road, Strabane, will be closed on Monday 26th May and will reopen on Tuesday 27th May. Registry Offices in both Derry and Strabane will also be closed on the Monday, reopening the following day.

    For those enjoying local attractions, the Guildhall and Tower Museum will remain open and welcoming visitors over the Bank Holiday weekend.

    Council-operated cemeteries will remain open daily from 8:00am to 8:00pm throughout the holiday period.

    The Council’s Out of Hours Dog Warden Service will be in operation to respond to ongoing dog attacks on people or animals. To report an incident, call 07734 128096. Please note that while the Council is not obligated to respond to other reports outside of normal hours, serious voicemails will be assessed.

    All Council parks and greenways will be open, and the public is encouraged to enjoy these spaces responsibly keeping them clean by using the bins provided.

    The Alley Theatre will also be open throughout the weekend, with Encore’s The Little Mermaid showing on Saturday 24th May.

    BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) — The 4th Meeting of Heads of Ministries and Departments Responsible for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States was held in Harbin, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, on Wednesday, according to the official website of the General Administration of Physical Culture and Sports of the People’s Republic of China.

    The event was attended by SCO Deputy Secretary General Akhmad Saidmurodzoda and heads of ministries and departments for physical culture and sports of the SCO member states. At the meeting, the heads of delegations of the SCO member states discussed strengthening cooperation in the field of sports competitions, the sports industry, winter and traditional sports.

    Gao Zhidan, Director General of the General Administration of Sports of the People’s Republic of China, said at the meeting that sports cooperation is an important part of cultural exchanges within the organization and plays an active role in promoting rapprochement and mutual understanding between the peoples of its member countries.

    Noting that China is willing to cooperate with all parties to further deepen sports exchanges among SCO member states, he added that the country will actively promote the construction of the China-SCO Winter Sports Demonstration Zone to make new and greater contributions to promoting the building of a closer SCO community with a shared future.

    The meeting adopted the “Protocol of the 4th Meeting of the Heads of Ministries and Departments Responsible for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports of the SCO Member States.” The parties agreed that the next such event will be held in Kyrgyzstan. -0-

    Parents, boys and girls and friends,

    My colleagues and I are very pleased to join you on the beautiful beach on such a lovely day. First of all, my arm congratulations on the opening of Le Miti Aito International 2025. We are proud to be associated with the return of the international solo paddling competition and the official launch of the Village and Va’a Scholarship Program.

    Seeing so many young faces today, I cannot help quoting Chairman Mao Zedong, the founding father of the People’s Republic of China: “The world is yours, as well as ours, but in the last analysis, it is yours. You young people, full of vigor and vitality, are in the bloom of life, like the sun at eight or nine in the morning. Our hope is placed on you.” This has inspired generations and generations of young Chinese. I hope it could

    be inspirational to our young Samoans too.

    Actually, young people have been the backbone for China-Samoa relations. The first Chinese arrived in Samoa was a young sailor in 1876. Early 1900s, thousands young Chinese laborers were employed by owners of coconut plantations in Samoa.

    Some of them stayed and married with local girls. That is why 20% Samoan population could trace their roots to China and our relations runs deep and sound.

    In 1975, Samoa and China established diplomatic ties. Since then, our young people of both countries have been builders of our close relations. In 2024 for example, more than 20 young Samoans went to China for study under the Chinese government scholarship scheme; most of 110 plus officials and professionals who traveled to China for training are young men and women.

    In Samoa, all Chinese medical specialists working in the national hospital are young ones. So are teachers of the Confucius Institute in NUS and most of SCATAP experts.

    This year, while celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishment of our diplomatic ties, we count on our young Samoan and Chinese people, to bring our two countries closer and more benefits to our two peoples. President Xi Jinping said, “I care about young people wherever I go.”

    This is why since my arrival in Samoa early last year, I have been trying my best to work with the Samoan government and institutions, to help young people in Samoa whenever possible. The sports is strength of individuals and the nation. The youth is the wealth of the community and the country.

    When young people are more capable, our countries have better hope, and China-Samoa relations are more promising. I wish Alo Paopao Academy and the Siumu community as well as wider regions of Samoa good luck.

    It is with great honor that we convene today to formally inaugurate the Le Miti Aito International 2025. More significantly, we embark on a new journey of community, culture, and opportunity for our youth through the establishmentof the Miti Va’a Scholarship Fund.

    This event, which originated in 2016 as Le Aito Samoa in collaboration with Tahiti’s Te Aito Race, returns today with profound significance, reborn as Le Miti Aito International in tribute to the late Miti Cheung Fuk.

    Miti was not merely a business leader; she was a mother who transformed adversity into hope. When her son faced challenges in his youth, she recognized the ocean as his sanctuary and source of strength.

    Her decision to uplift him and others in similar circumstances led to her support of paddling programs for over two decades. Her benevolence extended beyond her own child, reaching every young individual in need of guidance and belonging.

    Her compassion for children, her vision for community, and her unwavering support of paddling are the reasons we honour her name today. This race perpetuates her spirit.

    In furtherance of her legacy, we are proud to introduce the Miti Va’a Scholarship Fund, commencing here in the District of Siumu. Forty young paddlers from the villages of Siumu, Maninoa, and A’aga will receive comprehensive scholarships covering: School fees, Uniforms, Equipment and; Training

    This marks only the beginning, with plans to expand to Apia and Vaiala, and eventually across Samoa. This initiative transcends paddling; it is about cultivating confident leaders, reconnecting with our heritage, and fortifying our villages through teamwork, resilience, and identity.

    The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is dedicated to elevating sports and recreational activities of all types, recognizing their pivotal role in the development of our people and our nation. This program and the scholarships offered align with the Ministry’s goals and objectives by fostering personal growth, community engagement, and national pride through sports.

    I am therefore especially delighted to witness this important milestone in your journey. We have already witnessed the potential of this program, as it has nurtured paddlers who achieved bronze and silver medals at the 2023 World Distance Championships held here in Samoa.

    Today, we are privileged to welcome World Champion Anne Cairns and Carl Barnes, both exemplary role models for our youth.

    To our partners, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for supporting the growth of this program. To Ulugia Jay Ah Fook Schuster, we thank you for your leadership in paddling since 1987.

    Ladies and gentlemen,

    Talofa lava! I am delighted to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the Auxiliary Works of the Ninth-Phase China Aid Samoa Apia Comprehensive Sports Venues Technical Assistance Project today. First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, I would like to expressappreciation for your long-term support for China-Samoa relations!

    The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Samoa. Over the past half century, upholding the principle of mutual respect, equal treatment and win-win cooperation, China and Samoa have maintained traditional friendship, close economic and trade exchanges, and fruitful cooperation in various fields, which have delivered tangible benefits to our two peoples. In addition to the Apia Park stadium project, training sessions of Samoan althlets in China, and recent badmington day and table tenis day and others, the Samoa Aquatic Center is a historic witnesses of the friendship and cooperation between China and Samoa.

    Since the Samoa Aquatic Center was put into use in 2006, China has sent 9 batches of 29 technical experts to Samoa to provide maintenance support. It has been 20 years. As an important public sports facility, it has promoted the fitness and public health development of Samoa communities. During this period, large-scale events such as the 2006 “Miss South Pacific Pageant” and the 2007 South Pacific Games were held here, which exerted the economic effect of the events and promoted international exchanges.

    The purpose of this auxiliary project is to ensure the continued safe use of the Aquatic Center. I hope that the construction teams of both sides will work closely together to ensure the high standards and high quality of the project construction, and train on site as many as possible Samoan workers, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Samoa.

    Looking into the future, China will further its joint efforts with with Samoa, actively expand practical cooperation in various fields including sports, fully implement the outcome of Hon Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa’s visit to China last November, continuously deepeningthe comprehensive strategic partnership towardthe closer China-Samoa community with a shared future.

    I wish China-Samoa cooperation in sports sector fruitful, and prosperity for China and Samoa and our two peoples!

    [PRESS RELEASE – 24 April 2025] – The Samoa U17 women’s team continues to write history by becoming the first-ever Pacific Island team to reach the semi-finals of the prestigious Dallas Cup in the United States.

    Under the leadership of Head Coach Juan Chang Urrea, the first Pacific Island team to participate in the Dallas Cup delivered a historic performance by winning their pool and advancing through the quarter-finals to secure a top 4 finish in one of the most competitive youth football tournaments in the world.

    The Dallas Cup appearance was part of Samoa’s preparation for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco in October, after they became the first Samoan football team to qualify for a FIFA tournament when they finished second in the OFC U16 championship.

    “This level of preparation is unheard of in the Pacific Islands,” says coach Chang Urrea.

    “We are all working together in the Federation to give our team the best preparation possible to make our country and the Oceania Region proud at the World Cup.”

    With the support of FIFA Forward Operational funding and OFC, the federation created a detailed plan to prepare the players, scattered across Samoa, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

    Football Federation Samoa (FFS) earlier this year had gathered the team in California for a training camp and coach Urrea says that this time together was already bearing fruit during the Dallas Cup.

    In front of huge crowds of US-based Samoan fans who had travelled from different states, the team opened their campaign with a dominant 7-1 win against DKSC, before shocking the Spanish professionals from Villareal with a 2-0 victory.

    A 2-2 hard-fought draw against the strong local Dallas Texans completed an unbeaten run and top spot in Pool A.

    The fairytale continued in the quarter-finals where the DKSC ECNL team was dispatched 2-0 to set up an intimidating semi-final clash with the FC Dallas.

    The academy team from the host city’s professional club proved to be as good as their reputation and despite valiant Samoan resistance, FC Dallas ran out comfortable 5-0 winners to advance to the final.

    The stand-out player at the tournament for Samoa was top goal scorer Makea Leonard who bagged 5 goals in 5 games.

    Chang Urrea says the wins, but especially the semi-final loss, will provide essential experience against elite opposition and showcased the continued evolution of the team’s style, resilience, and confidence.

    The Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme uses money recovered from seized criminal assets to provide crucial support to young people who may be at risk of becoming involved in offending or antisocial behaviour.

    Successful projects in the programme’s next stage (2026-2029) will deliver a range of activities and support for those aged 10 to 25, to help tackle some of the underlying causes of antisocial behaviour and criminal activity. Projects will also provide access to trusted adults who young people can confide in.

    Since 2008 CashBack for Communities has invested £156 million and supported around 1.4 million young people across all 32 local authorities in Scotland.

    Visiting a project based at Glasgow’s Easterhouse Sports Centre, Minister for Victims and Community Safety Siobhian Brown said:

    Every year in May, the All-Russian mass orienteering competition “Russian Azimuth” is held throughout the country. Almost 100,000 people took part in the competition in 60 cities of the country at the same time. In Novosibirsk, this event was held for the third time on the campus of the Novosibirsk State University. About 400 people took part in them, more than half of whom were NSU students.

    The start and finish were set up at the stadium, and the participants ran along the student campus and forest area to Lavrentyev Avenue. There were 26 checkpoints (CP) on the ground, and depending on the age group, it was necessary to find a certain number – from 10 to 26. The participants chose the order in which to look for CPs themselves.

    “The organisers of the Enhanced Games are promoting the idea that performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) can be used safely, and that humanity has a duty to explore their potential to maximise human performance. To advance this agenda, they propose an alternative to the Olympic Games — the Enhanced Games — in which athletes will be actively encouraged to use substances and methods that are prohibited in the Olympics and most professional sports. They claim athlete safety can be ensured through health monitoring and other support measures, although details on these remain limited.

    “A major issue with implementing health safeguards for athletes using substances such as anabolic steroids or erythropoietin is the lack of a reliable evidence base to inform these measures. This includes insufficient data on the potential side effects of these drugs and how to mitigate them. In our recent paper (see below) we argue that such an evidence base does not currently exist, and that crucial information on the effects of commonly used PEDs is missing. For instance, it is known that anabolic steroid use can lead to heart enlargement, often accompanied by stiffening of the heart wall and thickening of the blood. These changes can impair heart function and increase the risk of heart attacks. However, we lack detailed knowledge about how different types of anabolic steroids, specific dosing regimens, and usage patterns relate to these cardiac effects.

    “The limited evidence available — mostly observational rather than experimental — suggests that while some individuals experience severe side effects, others do not, and we have little understanding of why. Similarly, some users develop long-term issues that progress slowly, while others experience short-term effects that resolve quickly. Again, we lack sufficient data to predict these outcomes. The situation is further complicated when athletes use novel substances with minimal human data (e.g., research peptides, selective androgen receptor modulators [SARMs]) or combine multiple PEDs — a common practice among users. As such, there is currently no robust evidence base to support the Enhanced Games’ proposed safety protocols.

    “Another concern is that the performance-enhancing effects of PEDs take time to develop, requiring use well in advance of competition. If the Enhanced Games are serious about athlete safety, they would need to provide comprehensive medical oversight starting now and continuing well beyond the conclusion of the Games.     The Volleyball Championship in the Spartakiad between NSU faculties and institutes has ended, in which 9 teams took part. The first place this year was unexpectedly taken by the Physics Faculty, having defeated the multiple leader of previous years in the final – the team of the Information Technology Faculty, and the third place went to the students of the NSU SUNC.

    The competition was held in two rounds over several days – first in three subgroups, in which three leaders were determined to reach the final. The final games were very intense – the teams fought equally until the very last moment!

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Seventy-four new constables heading to districts in a week

    Commissioner Richard Chambers, members of the police executive and wing patron former police assistant commissioner, Allan Boreham congratulated 74 graduating constables from Wing 384 today. 

    Also attending the graduation and presenting a prize in absence of the Minister of Police was her worship Anita Baker, the Mayor of Porirua.

    Families and friends celebrated the newly attested police officers at Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua this afternoon to acknowledge the successful completion of their initial training course. 

    There are some likeminded individuals in the wing with 11 of the graduates having family members currently working in police.

    Four graduating officers made the change from non-constabulary roles to police officers.

    The wing is very diverse with eighteen recruits speaking more than one language and 19 recruits who were born overseas. The top prize winner was born and raised in France.

    Top of wing, Constable Diane Aspalvo is a French-trained and certified clinical psychologist. She has worked as a psychologist in Paris and in Tairawhiti New Zealand before deciding to join the New Zealand Police.

    She previously volunteered for the French Army as a reserve after a call-up for national security due to the terrorist attacks in France in 2015. She is a keen swimmer, skier and is also into CrossFit.

    “I decided to join the New Zealand Police at 41 years old, so I am a living proof that it is never too late to achieve your dreams.”

    Diane will be deployed to Eastern District.

    Second Top Award winner Constable Hunta Sutherland, Ngāti Kuia is also a sporting talent, representing her district, Tasman, in football up to high school level.

    Not only is she a ‘Golden Boot’ winner for the most goals scored  in a regional competition (39), she’s into running track, cross country, and road races with many podium finishes. Hunta has worked as a teacher’s aide with troubled and autistic youth which she found inspiring.

    “While training at college I found strength I never knew I had, and a purpose I’ll never forget.”

    Hunta will be based in Tasman District.

    Leadership Award winner Constable Charise Perez is also a keen sports person excelling in netball. She was born in Wellington and raised by her Fijian dad and Samoan mother. Charise has experience in hospitality, service and politics. 

    She began her employment at the Electoral Commission as an administrator. She was a community liaison and worked on the 2020 elections and has also managed administration for an emergency housing organization called Tuatahi Centre. 

    As the leadership award winner, Charise gave a speech to the wing.

    “I stand here today as a product of the relationships and bonds between the members of wing 384. Together we began our journey as strangers, but today we stand as brothers and sisters.

    As we take the next step in our police journey, I believe that each and every one of wing 384 are more than capable of fulfilling the oath that we have just taken.”

    Charise, a former Authorised Officer for Police, will be based back in Wellington District to start policing.

    He says he is looking forward to supporting the wing members to succeed and gain all the satisfaction a Police career offers. Allan joined Police in 1985 (in Wing 97) and served for more than 33 years. He was also a Deputy Chief Executive in the public service for five years in charge of Youth Justice.

    His Police career was varied and involved completing a wide range of roles in public safety, investigations, and road policing. These included postings in Auckland, Tokoroa, Hamilton and Wellington.

    He received an award for his leadership in solving the 1997 kidnapping and murder of an Auckland businessman, Graham Kirkwood.

    Allan holds a Bachelor Arts, majoring in Sociology, from Massey University. He is currently learning to speak Spanish and is also a keen motorcyclist and skier.

    His father Bruce, now in his eighties, also served in the Police for 32 years.

    In a season where both clubs plummeted down the Premier League, Tottenham emerged from a dismal campaign with something to celebrate as well as a lucrative berth in next season’s Champions League.

    It was Spurs‘ first silverware since the 2008 League Cup and their first European trophy since their 1984 UEFA Cup success.

    Johnson scored in the 42nd minute when United’s defence crumbled as Pape Sarr swung in a cross while goalkeeper Andre Onana remained rooted to his line. Johnson and United defender Luke Shaw rushed in and the ball appeared to glance off both of them and in, past Onana’s desperate swipe.

    The goal was as scrappy as the game in a matchup of teams who have had wildly disappointing Premier League seasons, with United languishing in 16th and Spurs 17th.

    United’s Rasmus Hojlund had a terrific chance to equalise with a header midway through the second half, but Spurs‘ Micky van de Ven leapt for a stunning clearance off the line.

    United almost equalised at the death but Shaw’s header was saved by a diving Guglielmo Vicario, who had earlier denied an Alejandro Garnacho bullet strike from the edge of the box with a great reflex save.

    As usual, Real Madrid did not provide a timeline for the 18-year-old’s return. The club, which signed Endrick last summer, stated only that “his recovery will be assessed,” though the severity of the injury makes his participation in the Club World Cup highly unlikely.

    Real Madrid is set to debut in the tournament on June 18 against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, followed by matches against Mexican club Pachuca on June 22 and Austria’s RB Salzburg on June 27 in the group stage.

    The injury brings a premature end to what has been a slightly disappointing debut season for Endrick, who has been behind Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr in the attacking pecking order.

    Endrick scored just one goal in 22 La Liga appearances–19 of those as a substitute–but found more success in cup competitions, netting five times in the Copa del Rey and once in the Champions League.

    The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has welcomed Qatar’s decision to provide additional funding to support the organization’s scientific research efforts.

    The Ministry of Sports and Youth in Qatar will contribute an extra 1.5 million U.S. dollars, in addition to the country’s annual payment of more than 200,000 dollars to WADA, the agency announced on Wednesday.

    “WADA is appreciative of the continued support of our partners within Qatar’s Ministry of Sports and Youth. The additional funding will make a significant impact on anti-doping research globally and within Qatar itself,” said WADA President Witold Banka.

    “This is another indication of the strong support WADA receives from governments around the world, which believe in and trust us to deliver on our clean sport mission and understand the importance of cutting-edge scientific research to being ahead of those who seek to cheat the system.”

    Earlier this month, Japan pledged an additional 196,000 dollars to support anti-doping capacity and capability development in Asia and Oceania. According to WADA, Japan has contributed roughly 2.5 million dollars in additional funding over the past two decades.

    In the past 10 years, WADA has also received additional contributions from countries including Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, India, Kuwait, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and the United States.

    Banka stated earlier this year that WADA invests heavily in anti-doping research, allocating about 10 percent of its annual budget to scientific and social science initiatives. The agency has also called on its partners to support ongoing research efforts, including recent work focused on unintentional doping.

    WADA has set a budget of more than 50 million dollars for 2025.

    The United States, which failed to pay its 2024 annual fee of 3.62 million dollars–amounting to 14 percent of WADA’s budget–automatically loses its seat on the organization’s executive committee for the year.

    “It is so important for athletes that WADA is properly resourced and that it has certainty around the funds it receives,” said Yuhan Tan, Belgium’s former badminton player and WADA Athlete Council representative on the Foundation Board.

    “I call on all governments to fulfill their commitments and make their annual contributions to WADA in a predictable and timely fashion so the work upholding the World Anti-Doping Code and supporting athletes around the world can continue. Clearly, anti-doping is becoming more and more politicized, which must be avoided as it puts all athletes and the entire system at risk,” he commented when WADA released its budget plan earlier this year.

  • MIL-OSI China: Tottenham 1-0 Man United: Spurs win Europa League

    Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium on Wednesday night, courtesy of an own goal by United defender Luke Shaw in the closing moments of the first half.

    Shaw was unfortunate to deflect the ball into his own net after a flick from Brennan Johnson. The goal, however, summed up what was a lackluster final between the sides currently 16th and 17th in the Premier League.

    Neither team was able to take control of the game, and after Tottenham chose to sit deep in the second half to protect its lead, Manchester United failed to generate any clear-cut chances to equalize.

    The win secures Tottenham a spot in next season’s Champions League, while United miss out on European qualification–an outcome that will pose serious financial challenges for the club, already struggling economically.

    There was a mild surprise in United’s starting lineup, with Alejandro Garnacho left on the bench in favor of Mason Mount, who had scored a decisive goal in the semifinal.

    The first half was far from a footballing showcase, with limited space in midfield and both teams repeating the errors that have plagued their domestic campaigns.

    Tottenham showed more attacking intent, partly due to a backline that has struggled this season. Richarlison posed a threat and nearly scored from a Pedro Porro cross. Johnson also came close after a Harry Maguire error opened space on the right, while at the other end, Amad Diallo fired narrowly wide after a pair of Bruno Fernandes-inspired chances.

    Fernandes was central to United’s forward play but found little room in a game defined by high energy and low quality.

    Tottenham’s lone goal typified the match. Johnson got a touch on Pape Sarr’s cross from the left, reacting quickly, and the ball ricocheted off Shaw into the net.

    United attempted to push forward in the second half, but their possession only served to highlight the attacking inefficiency that has marred their season.

    Micky van de Ven cleared off the line midway through the half after Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario misjudged a cross. Fernandes then fired wide, and United failed to muster another meaningful opportunity until deep into stoppage time, when Shaw’s powerful header was denied by Vicario.

    Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou has claimed he always wins something in his second season at a club. Whether he will remain for a third, despite this success, remains an open question.

    Minister for Seniors and Veterans Suzanne Orr today announced the recipients of the 2024–25 ACT Veterans Grant Program, with $80,000 awarded to seven local organisations delivering innovative projects to support veterans and their families.

    The funding will support a wide range of initiatives that promote mental health and wellbeing, strengthen social connections, and recognise the service and sacrifice of the veteran community.

    “Our veterans and their families have given so much in service to our country. These grants are a way for the ACT Government to support their wellbeing, community connection and recognition,” Minister Orr said.

    The total output and sales of China’s sporting goods manufacturing industry exceeded 2 trillion yuan (about 277.5 billion US dollars) for the first time in 2023, marking a year-on-year growth of 2.39%, according to an industry report.

    The China Sporting Goods Industry Development Report 2024, released Wednesday at the 12th China Sports Industry Conference, found that the sector continues to recover and demonstrates strong resilience.

    The added value of China’s sporting goods manufacturing industry grew by 7.3% year-on-year in 2022 and by 3.96% in 2023, outperforming many segments of the broader manufacturing industry, according to the report.

    Exports also rebounded in 2024, increasing 6.77% year-on-year to about 28.4 billion dollars. Shipments to North America and Western Europe remained strong, while emerging markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, and Poland showed significant potential.

    Domestic demand for sporting goods also showed strong momentum. The report cited transaction data from four of China’s leading e-commerce platforms – JD.com, Taobao, Tmall, and Douyin – indicating that online sporting goods sales reached 333.7 billion yuan (about 46.3 billion dollars) in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 22.59%. Sales of domestic and foreign brands were reported to be roughly equal.

    While the construction of new public sports facilities has slowed, demand for upgrades and higher-quality venues is rising. As of 2024, China has more than 4.8 million sports venues, covering a total area of 4.23 billion square meters. The per capita sports venue area now stands at 3.0 square meters.

    The report also identified several trends reshaping the industry: sporting events are boosting the penetration of sporting goods; products are becoming increasingly smart; and evolving consumer demands are driving diversification in product offerings.

    Despite these positive indicators, the report warned of growing external market pressures. In response, many companies are accelerating efforts to expand overseas production in order to mitigate export risks.

    Real Madrid’s England midfielder, Jude Bellingham looks likely to miss the first six weeks of the 2025-26 La Liga season due to an operation to cure a longstanding shoulder injury.

    The Athletic and the BBC both reported that the 21-year-old will have the operation after the Club World Cup which will be played in the United States in June and July and where his side is the one of the favorites.

    Bellingham has struggled with his shoulder problem since 2023 when he injured it in a La Liga match with Rayo Vallecano and has had to play with a strapping to prevent further damage.

    The midfielder scored only 14 goals in 52 games this seaon, compared with 23 goals in 43 appearances in his debut campaign with the Spanish giant.

    If Bellingham has the operation in the middle of July, he will miss the pre-season and around six weeks of the next La Liga campaign.

  • MIL-OSI China: Wuhan reach AFC Women’s Champions League final

    China’s Wuhan Jiangda advanced to the final of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League, following a commanding 2-0 win over Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City FC on Wednesday.

    Cheered on by nearly 5,000 home supporters, Wuhan took control of the match early. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute, when local star Wang Shuang pounced on a poor clearance and curled a stunning strike into the net.

    The momentum continued in the second half. Just nine minutes after the restart, Song Duan unleashed a long-range shot from outside the penalty area. The ball dipped sharply, leaving the Ho Chi Minh City goalkeeper with no chance and sealing Wuhan’s place in the final.

    “The pressure forced our players to grow, and they rose to the challenge united as a team to secure this 2-0 victory,” said Chang Weiwei, Wuhan’s head coach.

    The squad has endured an exhausting schedule this season, simultaneously competing in the Chinese Women’s Super League, the National Sports Games’ qualifiers and the AFC Women’s Champions League.

    “It put a great challenge to our physical condition. Hopefully, we’ll recover to our best state in the following two days and bring a spectacular match to our fans,” said Wang.

    Wuhan maintained much of the same lineup from its quarterfinal clash against Japanese powerhouse Urawa Red Diamonds. Despite being under pressure in that match, the team held its nerve and triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout, knocking out the tournament’s favorite.

    The final will be held on Saturday, where the five-time Chinese Women’s Super League champion will face either South Korea’s Hyundai Steel Red Angels or Australia’s Melbourne City FC.

    “We’ll analyze the other semifinal tonight. Once I know our opponent, we’ll make tailored tactics. But whoever the competitor will be, we’ll stay true to our style and fight until the final whistle. Hopefully, we’ll finish the journey with no regrets,” Chang added.

    Two-time Olympic champion Liu Yang won his third straight rings national title at the 2025 National Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Wednesday.

    Liu, the rings champion in Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games, stepped under the rings as the last gymnast to compete. He snatched 14.966 points with the highest difficulty score, after You Hao put on a flawless routine at 14.733 points.

    “I didn’t train that much after the Paris Olympics. But I upgraded my difficulty score and my execution of skills and landing were perfect today,” said Liu.

    Local favorite Lan Xingyu settled with bronze medal at 14.466 points.

    Veteran Liu Jinru was crowned as women’s vault national champion. Her two jumps scored an average of 14.000 points and added 0.20 points bonus for double directions.

    “I retired years ago to focus on my university studies. But after graduation, I really missed the gym, so last year I went back to my coach and asked to resume training,” said the 24-year-old Asian champion.

    Elsewhere, Yang Fanyuwei earned her first national gold on uneven bars, Wang Haoyu claimed men’s floor gold and Hong Yanming won pommel horse.
