  • MIL-OSI Global: How does a person become famous when they’re just a kid?

Source: The Conversation – USA – By Matthew Pittman, Associate Professor of Advertising and Public Relations, University of Tennessee

Curious Kids is a series for children of all ages. If you have a question you’d like an expert to answer, send it to CuriousKidsUS@theconversation.com.

How does a person become famous when they’re just a kid? – Anushka, age 9, St. Augustine, Florida

First, consider what kind of fame you want. Some kids, such as Blue Ivy Carter or Suri Cruise, are known for having famous parents – in their cases, singer Beyoncé and actors Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. That’s something you can’t really control.

Maybe you want to be a star athlete, like basketball player Caitlin Clark or skateboarder Sky Brown. If you’re good at a sport, practicing a lot will make you even better, and you might get famous.

Or maybe you want to be a famous musician. Singer LeAnn Rimes won her first Grammy Award at age 14. Justin Bieber was discovered on YouTube when he was 12. If you work hard at playing an instrument or singing, you increase your chances of getting noticed.

Skateboarder Sky Brown won her first Olympic medal, a bronze, at age 13 in 2020.

A newer way to become famous is to be a social media influencer – a person who gets paid, either with money or with stuff, to help sell things on social media. A 2023 survey of 1,000 Gen Zers – people in their early teens to mid-20s – found that 57% wanted to become influencers.

I study social media and teach a social media class at the University of Tennessee. I also have a side gig as an influencer. My posts have gone viral and been seen hundreds of millions of times all around the world. I post silly and serious things about my life on Instagram and TikTok.

Here are some things to know about fame at a young age.

There wasn’t always a youth culture

Before modern times, people didn’t pay much attention to children in the way that we do now. There were a few exceptions, such as composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who played music as a child for kings and queens in the 1700s, but they were rare.

Things changed a lot as the U.S. population boomed after World War II. Businesses realized that young people were a big market, and a new, youth-focused culture developed. Movies, TV shows and songs were increasingly made for young people, featuring young people.

Opening credits for seasons 3-4 of “The Partridge Family,” a TV situation comedy about a family that forms a pop music band. The show ran from 1970-1974 and turned David Cassidy, who played the oldest son, into a teen idol.

Now, thanks to social media and the internet, kids can get famous without being star athletes or actors. If you can make videos, sing songs, tell jokes or share art from your phone or computer and people like what you post, they might share it with others. Some kids become famous just by being really good at explaining things or showing their everyday lives.

For example, Anastasia Radzinskaya, an 11-year-old Russian American girl who shares content about children’s songs and games, has 1.5 million followers on Instagram. Ethan Gamer, a video game influencer, started appearing on YouTube in 2013 at age 7.

    Pros and cons

Being a famous kid can offer a lot of benefits. You might get to appear on TV or in movies, wear cool clothes, or hang out with famous athletes or celebrities. You might also get to make money that you could use to support your family, pay for a high-quality education or fund causes that you care about, such as protecting nature or feeding hungry people.

But there also are downsides. Famous kids often have to work a lot and don’t have much time to hang out with friends. Also, people may say hurtful things about you on social media, which is something you can’t control.

Being famous can pressure people to act or dress in certain ways. Handling attention and criticism from strangers can be stressful for any young person, and fame makes the challenge much harder.

Should you try to be an influencer?

For me, influencing can be fun and creative. It’s cool to make a video and know that lots of people around the world are enjoying it.

Another plus is that the skills you need to be an influencer – communicating clearly, producing digital content and helping other people find cool new products – can be valuable as you grow up, no matter what job you have.

However, most influencers don’t make enough money to do it full time – they do it as a side gig while working a real job. If you are a kid, school should be your full-time job.

You also should expect to get rejected a lot before you start developing an audience. This can make you emotionally strong in the long run, but it still hurts when you share your work and no one seems to notice. Most influencers put in years of effort to learn the skills that help make them successful.

You’re likely to get negative responses that can hurt your feelings. You will need your parents’ help to manage online feedback and know how to react to all kinds of responses, positive and negative.

It’s definitely possible for kids to be famous today, but that doesn’t mean that every kid should try. What’s important is to do things that you enjoy, even if the whole world isn’t watching.

Hello, curious kids! Do you have a question you’d like an expert to answer? Ask an adult to send your question to CuriousKidsUS@theconversation.com. Please tell us your name, age and the city where you live.

And since curiosity has no age limit – adults, let us know what you’re wondering, too. We won’t be able to answer every question, but we will do our best.

Matthew Pittman’s influencer posts focus on his college teaching and family life. He occasionally receives products or payments in return for promoting toys, teaching tools and family games.

“Our government is proud to invest $1.5 million annually in organizations that support our veterans in Saskatchewan,” Ross said. “These veterans service clubs enrich our communities and work tirelessly on behalf of veterans who have faithfully served our province and country.”

Introduced in 2019-20, the program provides grants up to $30,000 to organizations such as Legion branches, Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) units, and more. • MIL-OSI USA: Health Care Access Expanded for Major Sporting Events

Source: US State of New York

overnor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation authorizing out-of-state and county medical professionals to provide health care services during major upcoming sporting events including the Ryder Cup and 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“From the Ryder Cup to the World Cup, New York is teeing up a marquee slate of sporting events — inviting fans around the world to celebrate their teams, athletes and everything our state has to offer,” Governor Hochul said. “That’s why I’m signing legislation to ensure our visitors have all the support they need to succeed on and off the field.”

Legislation S.7620/A.8147 authorizes certain health care professionals licensed or certified by a foreign government or another state or territory to provide services in the state in connection with the 2025 Ryder Cup.

State Senator Monica R. Martinez said, “The 2025 Ryder Cup will bring many of the world’s greatest golfers to Long Island, and with them, the medical professionals they rely on to stay at the top of their game. This temporary authorization recognizes that these providers are essential members of a pro’s team and helps ensure athletes can compete with the care they know and trust. I’m grateful to my colleagues in the Legislature and to the Governor for signing this bill and, for a few days, helping to make Farmingdale the center of the golfing world.”

Assemblymember Judy Griffin said, “I am delighted that Long Island’s Bethpage Black Course will be hosting the Ryder’s Cup for the very first time this year. I’m proud to have sponsored this legislation, which ensures that visiting qualified health professionals can provide medical care to their teams. I am pleased to have been able to help facilitate this historic event on Long Island and am grateful to the collaborating medical teams who will help make this event a success.”

Legislation S.7623/A.8149 authorizes certain medical professionals certified by a foreign government or another state or territory to provide medical services during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 26.

State Senator José M. Serrano said, “The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 26 will bring the eyes of the world to New York. This legislation ensures that certified providers from other states and countries can continue to care for their athletes throughout these historic events. I’m deeply grateful to my colleagues in the Legislature and to the Governor for signing this important bill and helping make New York a welcoming and world-class host on the global stage.”

Assemblymember Jon D. Rivera said, “The World Cup is one of the greatest sports spectacles on the planet. Given the international attention and participation this tournament draws, there are a host of rules and regulations that dictate how medical services can be provided to elite athletes within the country where the tournament is being held. This legislation will allow those services to be provided by medical professionals, regardless of their country of origin, to the players, coaches, staff, and foreign delegations, so that the tournament will feature the highest quality of soccer possible with reduced injuries. New York and the rest of the host sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup deserve a tournament to be remembered, and I was proud to sponsor this legislation to promote a safe, healthy experience for everyone involved.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: State sends more money to local governments: Governor Newsom funds additional $56 million to reduce youth homelessness

Source: US State of California 2

    May 23, 2025

What you need to know: California is providing $56 million in grants to help counties provide services for young adults at risk of homelessness.

SACRAMENTO – Continuing California’s success in reducing homelessness in youth, Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) today announced $56 million awards to help 52 California counties provide housing and supportive services to young adults at risk of homelessness. The funds will help counties prevent homelessness by providing services for youth transitioning out of foster care or probation systems in California. Last year, California reduced the number of youth experiencing homelessness, and saw a smaller increase in unsheltered homelessness than 44 other states. This is in part due to programs such as this one, which has helped 14,048 young adults since 2020.

“California will continue to support our local governments in their efforts to address homelessness. California has provided unprecedented resources to counties and local communities to help their residents in need. We will continue to work together to help them address these local issues and ensure those experiencing homelessness have the support and care they need.”

    Governor Gavin Newsom

There are currently an estimated 9,871 young adults between the ages of 21 and 24 in California who exited foster care at age 18 or older, and another 3,000 young adults exit foster care in California each year. Studies have shown that those exiting the foster care or probation system face disproportionately higher rates of homelessness, with unaccompanied youth up to age 24 comprising 10 percent of California’s homeless population. Researchers and advocates also cite lack of stable housing as a significant barrier to continuing education for current and former foster youth.

“These grants will provide vital services to our young adults as they transition out of foster care and probation system so that they are able to access housing and wrap-around supports,” said Tomiquia Moss, Business, Consumer Services and Housing Secretary. “In partnership with counties, these state resources will create pathways to stable housing and independent lives.”

These awards were granted by the Transitional Age Youth programs administered by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), which include the Transitional Housing Program, the Housing Navigation and Maintenance Program, and the Transitional Housing Plus Housing Supplement Program.

“Many young adults exiting the foster care or probation systems face homelessness and need resources and guidance to thrive,” said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez. “These programs, and the important partnership with our counties, helps our vulnerable youth receive the tools and support they need to secure and maintain housing and succeed in the future.”

The $56 million in awards announced today are allocated to counties based on need as demonstrated by each county’s percentage of the statewide total of young adults who are currently or formerly in the foster care or probation systems. The awards include:

    • Transitional Housing Program which helps county child welfare agencies identify and assist with housing resources and improve service coordination. Today’s announcement includes $33.3 million in THP awards to 52 counties.
    • Housing Navigation and Maintenance Program, which provides counties funding to train child welfare agency social workers and probation officers working with non-minor dependents as housing navigators with a broad understanding of available housing resources. Today’s announcement includes $13.7 million in HNMP awards for 51 counties.
    • Transitional Housing Plus Housing Supplement Program, which allocates grants to assist young adults who have exited foster care on or after their 18th birthday in counties with the state’s highest market-rate apartment rental costs. Today’s announcement includes $9 million in THP-SUP awards to six counties.

With the investment announced today, the three programs will have funded housing assistance for 14,048 young adults ages 18 to 24 since 2020.Of the counties eligible to receive TAY funding this round, 52 of 56 accepted THP awards; 51 of 56 counties accepted HNMP awards; and all six counties eligible for THP-SUP accepted their awards. Counties that declined awards even after receiving technical assistance from HCD indicated a combination of low TAY caseload and insufficient staffing to stand up a new program. Consistent with previous years, any funds that were declined were redistributed to eligible counties with the highest demonstrated need.

The Point in Time Count for homelessness among the age group served by TAY dropped from 11,403 in 2020 to 9,908 in 2022, and again to 8,569 by 2024.

Visit the TAY Program webpage for more information on HCD’s TAY programs and today’s awards.

What you need to know: Six canine officers joined the force to fight back against crime and drug trafficking — the first class trained from day one to detect fentanyl.

Sacramento, CaliforniaAfter months of specialized and intensive training, six K-9 teams joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to focus on improving public safety and tackling fentanyl abuse.

Five Belgian Malinois and one German Shepherd join their human partners on a mission to detect narcotics, explosives, and criminal suspects. This graduating class is the first to include canines trained to detect the scent of fentanyl from the beginning of their instruction — a proactive move to combat California’s opioid and fentanyl crisis.

With every class of canine officers, we add specialized capacity to meet the needs of the changing criminal landscape. These K-9 teams will be taking dangerous drugs off the streets and keeping communities safer.

    Governor Gavin Newsom

The patrol and narcotics focused teams complete 440 hours of criminal apprehension and narcotics detection training, while the narcotics specific teams complete a minimum of 240 hours of training – for the first time ever training specifically on fentanyl apprehension. The explosives specialized teams complete 600 hours of training. All teams met the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) guidelines and will continue to train at least eight hours a week to maintain peak readiness.

There are 50 active K-9 teams statewide. This class includes:

    • Three Patrol and Narcotics Detection Canine teams
    • One Patrol and Explosives Detection Canine team
    • Two Narcotics Detection Canine teams

“These new K-9 teams have demonstrated incredible dedication and skill throughout their training,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “They’re not just protecting our communities—they’re enhancing our department’s ability to fight crime and save lives.”

The new teams represent various regions across the state, with officers from the CHP’s Coastal, Golden Gate, Valley, Border, and Inland field divisions. These handlers bring departmental experience, ensuring seasoned leadership behind each K-9. In 2024 alone, CHP K-9 teams helped seize nearly 823 pounds of fentanyl, showcasing their critical role in the fight against illegal drugs.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Following illegal Senate vote, California and 10 other states launch Affordable Clean Cars Coalition

Source: US State of California 2

    May 23, 2025

What you need to know: California is helping launch an 11-state coalition that will work together to sustain the transition to affordable clean cars.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California would join an 11-state coalition to advance clean cars. This follows yesterday’s illegal vote in the U.S. Senate to attempt to revoke California’s authority to set its own clean air standards.

The Affordable Clean Cars Coalition — led by the U.S. Climate Alliance — will sustain America’s transition to cleaner and more affordable cars, support U.S. automotive manufacturers and workers, and preserve states’ clean air authority.

Participating states include: California, Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.

The federal government and Congress are putting polluters over people and creating needless chaos for consumers and the market, but our commitment to safeguarding Americans’ fundamental right to clean air is resolute.

We will continue collaborating as states and leveraging our longstanding authority under the Clean Air Act, including through state programs that keep communities safe from pollution, create good-paying jobs, increase consumer choice, and help Americans access cleaner and more affordable cars.

As we consider next steps for our clean vehicle programs, our states will engage stakeholders and industry to provide the regulatory certainty needed while redoubling our efforts to build a cleaner and healthier future.

Governors Gavin Newsom, Jared Polis (CO), Matt Meyer (DE), Maura Healey (MA), Wes Moore (MD), Phil Murphy (NJ), Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM), Kathy Hochul (NY), Tina Kotek (OR), Dan McKee (RI), and Bob Ferguson (WA)

States participating in the coalition will work together to develop solutions that make cleaner vehicles more affordable and accessible to all Americans who want them, including by reducing cost barriers, increasing availability of options, and expanding accessible charging and fueling infrastructure. They will also defend their longstanding authority under the Clean Air Act to adopt transportation solutions and explore options for next-generation standards.

The U.S. Climate Alliance is a bipartisan coalition of 24 governors representing approximately 60% of the U.S. economy and 55% of the U.S. population.

    California’s climate leadership

Pollution is down and the economy is up. Greenhouse gas emissions in California are down 20% since 2000 – even as the state’s GDP increased 78% in that same time period.

The state continues to set clean energy records. Last year, California ran on 100% clean electricity for the equivalent of 51 days – with the grid running on 100% clean energy for some period two out of every three days. Since the beginning of the Newsom Administration, battery storage is up to over 15,000 megawatts – a 1,900%+ increase.

  • MIL-OSI Security: FBI Tech Tuesday: Safe Online Surfing

    Source: US FBI

ARIZONA—With kids back to school, the FBI Phoenix Division wants to educate parents and students on how to safely search and be online.

Students are spending more time on the Internet, whether for school, social media, or research. Technology continues to advance and there are steps that educators, parents, adults, and students can take to be successful and safe online.

The FBI has developed a free computer literacy program called “Safe Online Surfing” or “SOS”. Teachers, administrators, and parents can utilize this program to help protect children. The Safe Online Surfing program includes age-specific materials for third to eighth grade and is available in English and Spanish. The program is a series of grade-appropriate online games that allow kids to have fun while also learning online lessons.

    This program can help students:

    • Explore what good online etiquette looks like.
    • Manage cyber bullies.
    • Show the importance of good passwords and double authentication.
    • Download safely – either a new app or game on your phone.
    • Screen friend requests in a responsible way.
    • See the dangers of plagiarism and privacy violations.

Here are some helpful tips for parents—

    • Talk to your kids about what kinds of information, photos, and videos are appropriate to post online—and what’s not.
    • Remind them that one picture to a friend can lead to an entire school seeing that photo.
    • Teach your kids how to limit the information they put online.
    • They shouldn’t be posting their full name, date of birth, and school information on social media platforms.
    • Explain that free software, apps, and downloads can be illegal, and some may open up your phone and computer to potential malware attacks.

If you are interested in learning more about the Safe Online Surfing program—go to sos.fbi.gov. As always, if you have been victimized by cyber fraud, be sure to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov or call your local FBI office.

  • MIL-OSI USA: California reaches major restoration milestone at the Salton Sea

Source: US State of California 2

    May 22, 2025

What you need to know: The state today began restoring shallow water habitats in the Salton Sea as part of California’s first major habitat restoration project in the region – a key step for improving local wildlife conditions and suppressing dust to improve air qualities for surrounding communities.

SALTON SEA – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced a major restoration milestone at the Salton Sea – filling the East Pond Expansion with water to restore habitats lost over time due to increased salination and water loss. This comes as part of the larger Species Conservation Habitat Project, a 10-year plan for implementing projects around the Salton Sea to develop an environment sustainable for local wildlife and improve air quality by reducing dust expelled from the dried seabed.

The Salton Sea, California’s largest inland water body, has shrunk in recent years due to reduced inflows, resulting in an exposed lakebed that could potentially release small dust particles that further impact the already-poor air quality in the Imperial Valley. The reduced water levels and increased salinity also negatively impact habitat for wildlife, including birds traveling the Pacific flyway.

“Today marks a major step in California’s environmental leadership – breathing life into critical ecosystems while creating cleaner air for communities around the Salton Sea. Thanks to the support of our local and federal partners, we’re making real the first major restoration project the Salton Sea has ever seen.”

    Governor Gavin Newsom

Drone images show the partially filled East Habitat Pond, which is part of the Species Conservation Habitat Project at the Salton Sea

Today’s milestone is just the latest example of Governor Newsom’s prioritization of delivering large-scale projects at the Salton Sea that create environmental habitats and provide benefits to nearby communities. Previously envisioned as a 4,100 acre project funded primarily through bond funds at a cost of approximately $200 million, the state secured additional commitments from the federal government in recent years totaling $245 million – allowing the Species Conservation Habitat Project to more than double in size.

“Filling the East Pond Expansion represents a major step forward in our commitment to the Salton Sea region,” said California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot. “Today’s action is proof that with strong partnerships and persistence, we can continue to make real progress that benefits both people and wildlife at the Sea.”

“Today, we can point to clear progress being made to improve conditions in the Salton Sea, which is critical to the health and economies of the Imperial and Coachella Valleys,” said State Water Board Chair E. Joaquin Esquivel. “These habitat restoration efforts help suppress dust from the exposed lakebed while protecting the Pacific Flyway, supporting diverse ecosystems, providing recreational opportunities and enhancing overall quality of life. For too long the Sea has been seen as an unfortunate liability, when in fact it is one of California’s greatest assets. This project, with federal, state, tribal, local and community leadership, is turning the page on that narrative.”

Waterfowl seen along the New River Diversion Structure, which is part of the Species Conservation Habitat Project at the Salton Sea

The initial groundbreaking for the East Pond Expansion was last October. Today’s milestone comes in addition to California’s efforts to enhance wetland habitat and improve public health and environmental conditions at the Salton Sea, including transforming the region into a global hub for battery production, essential to the state’s transition to zero-emission vehicles.

In 2023, Governor Newsom visited a project that is being implemented as part of the Salton Sea Management Program to enhance wetland habitat and improve public health and environmental conditions at the Salton Sea.

The total Species Conservation Habitat Project footprint is now envisioned to span over 9,000 acres – enough space to fit roughly 7,500 football fields. It will create a network of ponds, berms, nesting and loafing islands, and water delivery systems engineered to sustain fish and bird populations – helping to restore the local ecosystem and protect air quality by reducing dust at a key area of previously exposed lakebed at the Salton Sea. Today’s filling of the East Pond Expansion, combined with the filling of the original East Pond in early April, means that roughly 2,000 acres of the project will be operational in the coming weeks. Additional work continues to complete the remaining expansion components of the project.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Ferocity, fitness and fast bowling: how Virat Kohli revolutionised Indian cricket

Source: The Conversation – Global Perspectives – By Vaughan Cruickshank, Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education, University of Tasmania

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday.

While his Instagram message just said this was the “right time”, his poor recent Test form, mental fatigue and desire to spend more time with his family, charity foundation and expanding business empire have been suggested as other influential factors.

During his 14-year Test career “King Kohli” has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, and his absence is a huge blow as the Indians prepare to tour England next month.

The megastar scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

These numbers put him in the top five Indian test batsmen of all time, but his legacy extends far beyond his batting achievements.

Kohli, 36, quit Twenty20 Internationals last year (after India won its second world title). He may continue to play one-day internationals.

Rising to the top of Test cricket

Kohli has been the greatest Indian batsman of his generation.

He made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final match against Australia in January.

He scored centuries against every country he played against, with more than half of these coming overseas.

His seven Test centuries in Australia is the second most by an overseas batsman.

He was at his peak between 2014 and 2019, when he averaged more than 60 in Test cricket and became one of the “fab four” (the world’s best Test batsmen) alongside Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

Is Steve Smith set to become the best? What data says about Test cricket’s elite 10,000+ run club

This period also included six double-hundreds in 18 months, and 13 months as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

    Kohli the leader

Kohli is India’s greatest ever Test captain.

His tenure from 2014 to 2022 was a golden age for Indian Test cricket.

India won 40 of 68 Tests (59%) in this period and did not lose a Test series at home. India was the number one ranked Test team in the world from 2016–20 and won its first Test series in Australia in 2018–19.

These statistics make Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time.

Beyond these numbers, he was a charismatic and aggressive captain who redefined India’s approach to Test cricket by bringing a more competitive edge to the team.

He drove higher expectations around fitness, training intensity and fast bowling that continue to shape Indian cricket.

Mandatory fitness testing and improved dieting and recovery practices, which redefined the team’s standards, are attributed to Kohli’s leadership.

Similarly, Indian success was strongly contributed to by Kohli encouraging the development of a world-class pace bowling attack, which marked a significant shift from the spin-heavy approach of Indian cricket.

    Controversies

While Kohli’s energy, passion and intensity contributed to his success as batsman and captain, they also led to numerous confrontations with opposition players, which some believed to be disrespectful and arrogant.

His intense celebrations and assertive body language also drew criticism from conservative cricketing audiences.

Kohli’s collision with Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test versus Australia.

Many of these controversies have occurred in Australia, where Kohli enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Australian players and crowds.

Examples include flipping the bird to the crowd, making sandpaper gestures (in reference to the 2018 Australian ball tampering scandal, also known as Sandpapergate) and shoulder-barging young Australian batsman Sam Konstas.

What will his Test legacy be?

For more than a decade, Kohli has been the heartbeat of the Indian Test team, and his retirement marks the end of an era.

He reshaped the mindset of Indian cricket and cultivated a faster, fitter, fiercer, more successful team.

Kohli was also one of the greatest ambassadors of Test cricket, and has played a significant role in ensuring the game remains relevant in an era increasingly dominated by T20 cricket.

He made Test cricket aspirational again because he wanted it to thrive. He knew India needed to dominate the hardest format to be respected.

His social media reach (272 million followers on Instagram and 67.8 million on X) is more than Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Tom Brady combined, and was even referred to by LA2028 Olympics organisers when they announced cricket’s entry into the games.

In recent days, Kohli has been described as “a modern-day giant”, a “provocateur in chief”, and “his generation’s most profound figure”.

Love him or hate him, he elevated the spectacle of Test cricket. His electric energy brought the best out of India and its opponents and made him impossible to ignore when batting or fielding.

As respected cricket writer Peter Lalor noted recently:

Nobody is irreplaceable, but nobody can replace Virat.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Council set to cut red tape to support matchday trade

    Source: City of Stoke-on-Trent

    Published: Friday, 23rd May 2025

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is set to scrap outdated restrictions that stop cafes and food venues near football grounds from using outdoor seating on matchdays.

The city council’s cabinet will make the final decision when it meets on May 27.

Current rules mean businesses in designated matchday zones near the bet365 Stadium and Vale Park cannot sell or serve food or drink from temporary outdoor seating when Stoke City or Port Vale are playing at home.

The cabinet is now considering ending this restriction as part of a new policy on pavement licences.

A report to cabinet highlights that many local venues are missing out on valuable matchday trade as a result of the current rules.

Pavement licences allow businesses to place furniture on public highways for the sale or consumption of food and drink. Meanwhile, some businesses with private outdoor space aren’t subject to the same restrictions, creating an uneven playing field.

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration at Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: “Matchdays should be a moment of opportunity; not just for fans, but for local businesses too. Right now, we’ve got rules that hold people back.

“Lifting these restrictions is a simple, sensible change that means more trade for local businesses, more choice for fans, and a better matchday experience all round.

“It’s about common sense. Backing the businesses that keep this city going and making sure we offer the best experience to everyone who loves their local club.”

NCDHHS Emphasizes Summer Safety Practices as Temperatures Rise Across North Carolina
    jawerner

As summer approaches, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is reminding residents to take simple, proactive steps to enjoy outdoor activities safely. With the arrival of warmer weather, NCDHHS is highlighting key tips on water safety, heat protection and food safety to help prevent illness, injury and death.

May is National Water Safety Month, and a timely reminder that drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages one through four, but it is preventable.

“Every North Carolinian deserves to enjoy the summer season without risk to their health or safety,” said Dr. Kelly Kimple, Interim State Health Director and NCDHHS Chief Medical Officer. “By taking small, thoughtful actions — like supervising children near water, staying cool during extreme heat and practicing safe grilling — we can all stay safe this summer.”

Water Safety: Preventing Tragedy Before It Happens

As families head to pools, lakes and beaches, NCDHHS urges everyone to keep these water safety practices in mind:

    • Actively Supervise: Drowning can happen silently and in seconds. Always keep a close eye on children near water.
    • Secure Pool Areas: Keep gates and doors closed and locked. Remove pool ladders when not in use.
    • Know the Water: Be aware of currents, depth changes and undertows at beaches, lakes and rivers.
    • Stay Healthy: Don’t swim when ill with diarrhea to prevent spreading germs.
    • Check Water Quality: Ensure pools are properly disinfected. Local health departments routinely inspect public pools, spas and splash pads.
    • Be Cautious in All Recreational Waters: Lakes and rivers may carry bacteria or harmful algae blooms. Check advisories before swimming.

Heat Safety: Protecting Against Rising Temperatures

According to the North Carolina Climate Science Update, the state continues to experience an increasing number of extreme heat days — those reaching 95 degrees or higher. From May through September 2024, North Carolina recorded over 4,600 emergency department visits for heat-related illness.

    NCDHHS encourages all residents to:

    • Watch for Symptoms: Nausea, dizziness, headache, confusion or a rapid pulse could indicate heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
    • Hydrate and Cool Down: Move to a cooler area, sip water slowly and seek medical help if symptoms persist.
    • Know Who’s at Risk: Children, older adults, pregnant individuals, outdoor workers, athletes and those without air conditioning are most vulnerable.

To stay informed, sign up for the NCDHHS Heat Health Alert System on the NC Climate and Health team webpage.

Grill Smart: Avoid Foodborne Illness This Summer

Summer gatherings often mean grilling and increased risk for foodborne illness. The majority of reported foodborne outbreaks in North Carolina occur between May and August.

Stay safe with these grilling guidelines:

    • Wash Up: Scrub hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.
    • Separate Raw and Cooked Foods: Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw meats apart from other foods.
    • Cook to Safe Temperatures: Use a food thermometer to ensure meats reach the correct internal temperature.
    • Store Leftovers Promptly: Refrigerate or freeze within two hours; consume within three to four days.
    • Clean the Grill: Sanitize surfaces and utensils before and after each use.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Capital for the development of universities: the Russian Ministry of Education and Science held a strategic session at the Polytechnic University dedicated to endowments

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University – Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University –

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation held a strategic session at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University dedicated to endowment funds in science and higher education.

The event was attended by over three hundred participants: heads of universities and research organizations supervising the creation and development of endowment funds, representatives of government bodies and alumni associations. The plenary session was opened by the first vice-rector of SPbPU Vitaly Sergeev.

“Working with endowment capital today is a new mentality, the formation of which requires both time and constant interaction with business and government bodies,” Vitaly Vladimirovich said in his welcoming speech. “Therefore, today’s strategic session is important and useful, and the exchange of experience, I am sure, will lead to the fact that we will be able to build a systematic work with endowment funds, especially since much has already been done in this direction. I hope that the Polytechnic University is a good platform with strong energy, and we are also very interested in this topic.”

Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Andrey Omelchuk recorded a video message for the participants of the strategy session, in which, in particular, he noted: Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Government of the Russian Federation pay special attention to the development of endowment funds for universities and scientific organizations. Important changes have already been made to the legislation, concepts and methodological recommendations for the development of endowment funds for universities have been developed. The session plans to discuss the formation of endowment funds, the structure of fundraising and its relationship with the strategy of the university. We hope that the participants will gain an understanding of the need to create funds and new ideas for their development.

Director of the Department of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Aslan Kanukoev thanked the Polytechnic University for organizing the event and spoke about the results and prospects of the activities of the interdepartmental working group of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia on the development of endowment funds in the field of higher education and science.

Aslan Sultanovich noted that the topic of endowment capital has become significantly more relevant and popular in recent years. A specially created interdepartmental working group of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Finance developed and approved concepts for the development of endowment funds in universities and research organizations until 2035 in 2023–2024, the main areas of which are defined as: interaction with graduates, with the business community, formation of a pool of partners, information support, increasing the efficiency of capital management and the formation of transparency standards. An educational course has also been created and is planned to be launched in the near future, which will provide a complete understanding of the creation, formation, development and management of endowment capital, including the legal aspects of working with this topic, and will also introduce fundraising technologies and building relationships with endowment donors.

According to monitoring data from the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, as of January 1, 2024, 94 endowment funds were created in subordinate universities.

The Russian Ministry of Education and Science believes that endowment funds are a long-term strategic instrument for the sustainable development of educational, scientific, healthcare and cultural organizations, emphasized Aslan Kanukoev.

Chairperson of the Board of the National Endowment Association Svetlana Lavrova presented a report entitled “Understanding and Culture of Endowment Themes: History, Modernity, and Focus on Eternity.”

Svetlana Nikolaevna explained what an endowment is, what are the origins of this phenomenon, why it has been so important in the world for many centuries, and what place Russia occupies in it. By the way, the Russian Empire had its own history of endowments, only before 1918 they were called “eternal contribution”, “eternal capital” or “untouchable capital”, and the entire social sphere was based on them.

According to Svetlana Lavrova, the educational organization has several sources of funding: state (in the future, not direct, but aimed at supporting individual programs), tuition fees, research orders, contracts, short-term projects, and an endowment fund.

The purpose of the existence of science and the university goes into eternity, and the sources of funding on which this activity relies are usually short-lived. The endowment fund is a super-stable source that gives the university independence. It is long-term, and it is the university’s money that ensures sustainability, – Svetlana Lavrova believes.

An endowment consists of three components: fundraising, or seeking donations, investing funds through a management company, and finally receiving and using income from investments.

The university is interested in the income from the endowment, and the Ministry of Finance is interested in it, because endowments are the largest institutional investors worldwide. This is a unique system that works simultaneously to develop different aspects of the state, so the state is extremely interested in them, Svetlana Lavrova emphasized.

First Vice-Rector for Economics and Strategic Development of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin Daniil Sandler shared an interesting experience of the university in the formation of endowments. As of May 1, 277 million had been collected for the UrFU endowment — these are funds from 18 endowments created by more than 12 thousand donors. Each of the funds, according to Daniil Sandler, “has its own face.” The endowment for the 100th anniversary of the Ural Federal University in the amount of 75 million rubles was created on the initiative of the Students’ Union. If you ask artificial intelligence what to do with the fact that in Russia there is no tradition of forming and donating endowments, it will write: “Start with the students,” and in practice it is clear that it was the Students’ Union that took the initiative, and now this is our largest endowment. Although they say that a student has no money, he has time, energy and desire, says Daniil Sandler.

The second endowment — “Sports Programming at UrFU” — was created by a group of enthusiasts who wanted sports programming to develop in the Urals. They got a serious business interested in their idea and collected 51 million rubles. There is a personal endowment of Maslakov — a graduate of the history department, who donated 16 million rubles so that the interest from this endowment would be used to pay financial assistance to elderly teachers of the history department every year. The endowment of the Institute of New Materials and Technologies in the amount of 11.6 million rubles was created to establish a scholarship named after a respected university professor who passed away to perpetuate his memory.

The speech by the executive director of the MGIMO Development Fund (over 2 billion rubles) Marina Petrova was devoted to the Russian and international experience of financing science through the endowment mechanism.

Oksana Oracheva, CEO of the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Foundation, spoke about the role of transparency and accountability in working with stakeholders.

Irina Tolmacheva, Deputy Director of the Foundation for the Formation of Endowment Capital of the Foundation for the Development of Social and Economic Sciences and Education, highlighted the legal aspects of the activities of endowment funds.

Thus, the speakers at the plenary session outlined the main problems of endowment development: insufficient awareness of the funds’ activities among businesses and university graduates, the need to increase motivation among philanthropists, a decrease in the funds’ profitability during periods of high economic volatility, the need to provide additional tax preferences and other benefits. How to interest donors, how to popularize endowment funds and make them socially significant, how to fulfill and exceed the “Priority-2030” program indicator in terms of endowment – these and many other issues were to be discussed in more detail by the participants of the strategy session in sections, mechanisms for their solution were to be developed and discussed at the final joint session.

As a result, representatives of all five sections identified problems and proposed approaches to solving them, which demonstrated deep immersion in the topic, mutual understanding and interaction in the community. Participants of the strategy session came to the conclusion that it is necessary to concentrate efforts on developing fundraising as a specific work on finding donations, to conduct educational work so that the endowment becomes a socially approved mechanism and an indicator of the effectiveness of universities, to expand opportunities for investment and to legislatively enshrine incentive measures – tax preferences and motivating co-financing.

The results of the strategic session were summed up by the Director of the Department of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia Aslan Kanukoev: Today there are more like-minded people among us. Visiting all the sections, I was convinced that, despite the differences in issues and challenges, the mechanisms for solving them were close. Today we had the first introductory strategic session. It is important that you feel each other, feel the shoulder of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. We will develop endowment funds, we believe in this tool and promise that we will not abandon anyone on this path and will help everyone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi today, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the holistic development of the North Eastern region. Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, industry leaders, and stakeholders, the Prime Minister expressed pride and confidence in the region’s vibrant future.

Welcoming participants to the summit, the Prime Minister recalled the recently held Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav at the same venue, saying that today’s event is not just a meeting of minds but a celebration of investment and opportunity in the Northeast.

Highlighting the enthusiastic participation of industry leaders, PM Modi praised the collaborative efforts of ministries and state governments in creating an investor-friendly environment. “The presence of so many industry leaders reflects the growing interest in the Northeast’s potential,” he said, extending his best wishes to all stakeholders involved.

Describing India as the world’s most diverse country, the Prime Minister said that the Northeast represents the most diverse part of this diversity. He underlined the region’s strengths across sectors—trade, tradition, textiles, and tourism—and identified it as a hub of bio-economy, bamboo, tea, petroleum, sports, skill development, eco-tourism, organic products, and energy.

Referring to the Northeast as Ashtalakshmi, symbolising prosperity and opportunity, he said that each Northeastern state is now asserting itself as ready for investment and leadership.

Underscoring the strategic importance of Eastern India in the mission to build a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), the Prime Minister said, “For us, EAST is not just a direction—it is a vision: Empower, Act, Strengthen, and Transform. This is the guiding framework of our policy for Eastern India.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the transformation witnessed in the Northeast over the past 11 years. He stressed that this progress is not confined to statistical achievements but is visible in real, on-ground development. He said the government’s engagement with the region goes beyond policy—it is rooted in an emotional connection with its people.

“Infrastructure projects in the region are not just about roads and bridges; they are about emotional connectivity,” he said.

He further stated that the government’s transition from a “Look East” to an “Act East” policy has brought tangible results. “The Northeast was once seen as a frontier region; today, it is emerging as a front-runner in India’s growth story,” the Prime Minister concluded.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Bloods Gang Leader Charged with Narcotics Distribution Resulting in One Death and Three Additional Poisonings

    Source: US FBI

Defendant Allegedly Distributed Narcotics throughout Long Island Over Seven Year Period

Earlier today, Gary Johnson, a Bloods gang leader also known as “G Money,” was arraigned in federal court in Central Islip on new charges in a 26-count second superseding indictment charging him with distributing controlled substances, including fentanyl and cocaine base, that caused the death of a woman and caused serious bodily injury to three additional victims.  Johnson is also charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl in Long Island, additional narcotics distribution offenses, various firearms offenses and destruction of evidence.  Today’s arraignment was held before United States District Judge Joan M. Azrack. Johnson previously was detained pending trial.

John J. Durham, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, James E. Dennehy, Assistant Director in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI) and Kevin Catalina, Commissioner, Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD), announced the charges.

“Our district has suffered terribly from the opioid epidemic, and as alleged in the superseding indictment, Johnson sold large amounts of dangerous narcotics for his own profit, without regard for the deadly consequences of his actions, even after a victim was fatally poisoned by the defendant’s drugs,” stated United States Attorney Durham.  “With these new charges, this Office continues its tireless efforts, in conjunction with our federal and local law enforcement partners, to prosecute drug traffickers responsible for the opioid crisis. It is my hope that the charges will bring some measure of closure to the family members of the victim whose death was caused by the defendant.”

“Gary Johnson, a Bloods gang leader, allegedly sold substantial quantities of illicit drugs, which resulted in a known death of one victim and poisonings of three others. These alleged actions threatened public safety by exposing neighborhoods to a supply of dangerous substances,” stated FBI Assistant Director in Charge Dennehy. “The FBI and our law enforcement partners will continue its mission to assuage the flow of lethal narcotics from polluting our communities and apprehending those responsible for its pipeline.”

“For years, Gary Johnson knew the poison he was selling posed deadly consequences, yet, his only concern was about making money,” stated SCPD Commissioner Catalina.  “We will continue to work with our federal partners to take down drug traffickers while undoubtedly saving lives in the process.”

As alleged in court filings, Johnson is a leader of the G-Shine set of the Bloods gang. Between June 2013 and November 2020, when Johnson was arrested on federal charges, the defendant conspired to sell narcotics throughout Long Island. The drugs that Johnson sold – including heroin, fentanyl and cocaine base – resulted in at least four victims suffering poisonings. Specifically, on March 3, 2020, Johnson distributed narcotics which were ingested by John Doe #1 and Jane Doe #1 in the parking lot of Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York.  John Doe #1 and Jane Doe #1 lost consciousness and were revived by emergency medical personnel who administered CPR and Narcan on both victims.  They were resuscitated and survived.  On May 1, 2020, Johnson distributed narcotics ingested by John Doe #2 and Jane Doe #2. John Doe #2 was found unconscious by coworkers in St. James, New York, and was revived with Narcan. Jane Doe #2, a 39-year-old mother of a three-year-old son, was found deceased in her home in Rocky Point, New York. Her cause of death was determined to be acute mixed drug intoxication caused by a combination of cocaine and fentanyl – these drugs were supplied by the defendant.

The charges in the second superseding indictment are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.  If convicted, Johnson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment.

This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.

The government’s case is being handled by the Criminal Section of the Office’s Long Island Division.  Assistant United States Attorneys Mark Misorek, Meredith A. Arfa and Stephen Petraeus are in charge of the prosecution with assistance from Paralegal Specialist Dejah Turla.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Swift action by environment officer and fire service averts major wild 23 May 2025 Swift action by environment officer and fire service averts major wildfire in Sandown

    Source: Aisle of Wight

A potentially devastating wildfire in Sandown was swiftly brought under control last week, thanks to the quick thinking of a local environment officer and the rapid response of Island firefighters.

While on a routine inspection last Friday, Davide Fossa spotted smoke rising from the undergrowth near to Browns Golf and Dinosaur Isle.

Recognising the danger, he immediately called 999 and began directing people away from the area to ensure their safety.

“I knew every second counted,” said Davide. “I made the call, then focused on keeping people at a safe distance until the fire crews arrived. It could have spread so quickly.”

Within minutes, firefighters arrived and launched what Davide described as a “military-style operation.”

“They knew exactly what to do,” he said. “It was like watching a well-drilled unit in action. They moved with precision, coordinated their efforts seamlessly, and brought the fire under control before it had a chance to spread. It was incredibly impressive.”

Thanks to their swift and strategic response, the blaze was contained and extinguished before it could threaten nearby homes, businesses, or the wider nature reserve.

Davide is one of four dedicated environment officers working for the Isle of Wight Council. This small but highly skilled team play a vital role in safeguarding the Island’s natural environment and making the Island a cleaner, greener place to live and visit.

The environment officers undertake a number of duties, including inspection of playgrounds, parks and open spaces, and enforcing Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs).

The team also enforces a range of environmental regulations, including those related to waste management, fly-tipping and littering, helping to maintain standards and prevent harm to the environment.

In addition to their enforcement duties, they work closely with the community to promote sustainable practices, offering guidance and education to encourage greater environmental awareness and responsibility among residents and visitors alike.

Their work often takes them into remote or ecologically sensitive areas, where early detection of issues like wildfires can make a critical difference.

Some town, parish, and community councils — including Sandown — invest in an enhanced environment officer service, supplementing the core provision offered by the Isle of Wight Council.

This enhanced service can include additional patrols, one of which led to the early discovery of the fire.

Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, said: “Davide’s vigilance and calm response under pressure made all the difference. And we are deeply grateful to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for their swift and professional response.

“Their teamwork ensured this incident didn’t escalate into something far more serious.”

Sandown Mayor, Councillor Alex Lightfoot, said: “We are grateful for the actions taken by Sandown’s environment officer, and the swift response from our fire service.

“This just demonstrates the value of our partnership working between Sandown Town Council and the Isle of Wight Council.”

A spokesperson from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) added: “Our crews worked extremely hard in the hot weather to contain and extinguish the fire and protect neighbouring heathland.

“This fire destroyed a large area of grassland, and is just one example of the devastation these outdoor fires can have, damaging our green spaces.

“Although we don’t know what caused this blaze, we ask that when you’re out enjoying the countryside that you do so responsibly and help prevent wildfires by following our safety guidance.”

Authorities are reminding residents and visitors to remain vigilant during dry weather and to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

Staying Safe During Dry Weather: Fire Prevention Tips

With warmer, drier summers becoming more common, the risk of wildfires increases. Here are some simple but important steps everyone can take to help prevent fires:

    • Never leave barbecues and campfires unattended, and ensure they are fully extinguished after use.
    • Avoid using disposable barbecues in parks, nature reserves, or near dry grass.

  • MIL-OSI Security: High-Ranking MS-13 Gang Member Pleads Guilty to Seven Murders, Multiple Attempted Murders, Arson and Firearms Offenses

    Source: US FBI

Earlier today, in federal court in Central Islip, Jairo Saenz, also known as “Funny,” a high-ranking member of the Brentwood/Central Islip chapter of the Sailors Locos Salvatruchas Westside (Sailors) clique of La Mara Salvatrucha, also known as the MS-13, a transnational criminal organization, pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in connection with his participation in seven murders, namely, the January 28, 2016 murder of Michael Johnson; the April 29, 2016 murder of Oscar Acosta; the September 13, 2016 murders of Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens; the October 10, 2016 murder of Javier Castillo; the October 13, 2016 murder of Dewann Stacks; and the January 30, 2017 murder of Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla.  Saenz also pleaded guilty to his participation in three attempted murders, arson, narcotics trafficking, firearms offenses and a conspiracy to kill Marcus Bohannon, who was murdered on September 5, 2016 by other members of the MS-13.

Today’s guilty plea proceeding was held before United States District Judge Gary R. Brown.  When sentenced, Jairo Saenz faces up to 60 years in prison, and a minimum sentence of 40 years in prison under the terms of his plea agreement.

Carolyn Pokorny, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, James E. Dennehy, Assistant Director in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI) and Robert E. Waring, Acting Commissioner, Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD), announced the guilty plea.

“Today, Jairo Saenz pleaded guilty to seven murders that can only be described as barbaric, and multiple acts of senseless gang violence that had turned parts of Long Island into a war zone, with MS-13 gang members wielding guns, machetes, bats and fire that threatened the safety of our communities,” stated Acting United States Attorney Pokorny.  “I commend my Office’s prosecutors and the Long Island Gang Task Force who are committed to holding MS-13 gang members accountable for the crimes they have committed and harm they have caused.  It is my sincere hope that today’s guilty plea brings some measure of solace and closure to the families of the defendant’s victims who continue to mourn the deaths of their loved ones.”

According to court filings and statements made during today’s guilty plea proceeding, Jairo Saenz was a high-ranking member of the Brentwood/Central Islip chapter of the Sailors clique of the MS-13 – one of the more powerful, violent and well-established cliques on the East Coast of the United States.  At the time, he was second in command to his brother, Alexi Saenz, who pleaded guilty to the same crimes on July 10, 2024.  Jairo Saenz committed the following crimes in order to maintain and increase his membership and status within the gang, and to further the mission of the MS-13:

January 28, 2016 Murder of Michael Johnson

On January 28, 2016, Alexi Saenz and other MS-13 members and associates were at the Jocorena Deli in Brentwood, where they saw 29-year-old Michael Johnson, and claimed to recognize him as a member of the rival Bloods street gang.  At that point, Johnson was marked as their “food” – a reference to their intention to kill him.

After receiving the requisite approval from the New York leader of the Sailors clique to commit this murder, Alexi Saenz contacted Jairo Saenz and several other MS-13 members, informed them of the plan to kill Johnson and instructed them to bring weapons, including a machete and a baseball bat, to a wooded area in Brentwood.  Alexi Saenz then lured Johnson to that secluded meeting location under the guise of smoking marijuana.  The MS-13 members and associates, including Jairo Saenz, ambushed Johnson from behind – striking Johnson with the baseball bat, stabbing him with a knife and taking turns hacking him with the machete.  They fled after hearing police sirens in the area.

Johnson was reported missing by family members.  Less than one week after his murder, on February 2, 2016, members of the SCPD responded to a 911 call about a body found in the woods by a passerby and recovered Johnson’s body.  An autopsy determined Johnson’s cause of death to be sharp and blunt force injuries.

April 29, 2016 Murder of Oscar Acosta

In early 2016, Alexi Saenz, Jairo Saenz and their fellow Sailors clique members decided to “green light,” or approve, the murder of 19-year-old Oscar Acosta because they suspected that he was associating with the rival 18th Street gang after previously aligning himself with the MS-13.  The New York Sailors clique leader assigned roles as to which members would take the lead in planning and carrying out the murder.

On April 29, 2016, MS-13 members met Acosta in a wooded area near an elementary school in Brentwood where he had been lured under the guise of smoking marijuana.  They brutally beat Acosta with tree limbs, knocking him unconscious. They bound Acosta’s hands and feet, wrapped an article of clothing around his mouth to prevent him from making noise and summoned other MS-13 members, including Alexi Saenz and Jairo Saenz, who arrived together.  The MS-13 members loaded Acosta into the trunk of the Saenz brothers’ car, and drove to a more secluded area in Brentwood near the abandoned Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital.  At the direction of Alexi Saenz, the MS-13 members removed Acosta, who was still alive, from the trunk and carried him deeper into the woods where they took turns hacking him to death with a machete.  The murder was supervised by the Saenz brothers.  The MS-13 members then buried Acosta’s body in a shallow grave.

Acosta’s body was discovered by law enforcement nearly five months later, on September 16, 2016, during a search for another MS-13 victim.  His cause of death was homicidal violence, including sharp and blunt force injuries to his head and torso.

July 18, 2016 Attempted Murders of John Doe #1 and John Doe #2

On July 18, 2016, during a Sailors clique meeting at the Saenz brothers’ house in Central Islip, Alexi Saenz instructed the group to hunt for rival gang members who had been disrespectful to the MS-13, in order to attack and kill them.

Later that evening, Jairo Saenz and other members of the MS-13, who were driving around Brentwood armed with firearms and a machete, spotted a group of men on Apple Street.  Believing these men to be members of a rival gang, three MS-13 members got out of the car driven by Jairo Saenz and attacked the group, firing rounds from two different guns, and then using a machete to hack at one of the men who had fallen to the ground.

Two individuals were injured as a result of this attack.  John Doe #1 was struck with a bullet, but survived.  John Doe #2 was attacked with a machete, and was permanently disfigured.

August 10, 2016 Attempted Murders of Suspected Rival Gang Members

In 2016, members of the MS-13 were engaged in a series of disputes with members of the Goon Squad, a rival gang in Brentwood.

On August 10, 2016, Alexi Saenz and another MS-13 member drove through the neighborhood around Lukens Avenue in Brentwood, and spotted several men who they believed were members of the Goon Squad.  They then rallied other members of the Sailors clique, including Jairo Saenz, to come kill the rivals.

The MS-13 members divided into two vehicles and drove towards the house where the suspected Goon Squad members had been spotted. The Saenz brothers’ car kept watch for the police, while two other MS-13 members, each armed with a gun, approached the group of suspected rivals and fired numerous shots in their direction. No one was hit, although a stray bullet entered a neighbor’s house and struck the headboard of a bed in which the neighbor was sleeping.

September 5, 2016 Murder of Marcus Bohannon

On September 4, 2016, after a Sailors clique meeting at the Saenz brothers’ house in Central Islip, Jairo Saenz, Alexi Saenz and other MS-13 members went out hunting for rival gang members to kill.

The MS-13 members separated into several cars and drove around Central Islip and Brentwood, until Alexi Saenz’s group spotted 27-year old Marcus Bohannon walking along Lowell Avenue in Central Islip in the early morning hours of September 5.  Suspecting that Bohannon was a member of the rival Bloods gang, two MS-13 members, carrying firearms, got out of the vehicle, approached him and started shooting.  Bohannon was struck nine times, including in his head, neck, and chest, and died from his wounds.

    September 12, 2016 Arson

During the summer of 2016, Sailors clique members of the MS-13 were regularly having altercations with local gang members based in a neighborhood on Freeman Avenue in Brentwood.

On September 12, 2016, the MS-13 members retaliated by setting fire to a car parked in the driveway of one of the houses in that rival gang neighborhood.  Alexi Saenz directed other gang members to purchase gasoline and carry out the arson, while he drove around watching for police. Jairo Saenz drove the other MS-13 gang members to that house, where they poured gasoline on a car parked in the driveway, and set it on fire.  The car exploded and set another parked car on fire.

September 13, 2016 Murders of Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens

On September 13, 2016, Sailors clique members brutally murdered 15-year-old Nisa Mickens and 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas, both students at Brentwood High School.

In the months leading up to the murders, Cuevas was involved in a series of disputes with members and associates of the MS-13.  Approximately one week before the murders, these disputes escalated when Cuevas and several friends were involved in an altercation with MS-13 members at Brentwood High School.  After that incident, the MS-13 members vowed to seek revenge against Cuevas.

On the evening of September 13, 2016, the Saenz brothers and other members of the Sailors clique of the MS-13 were driving in separate cars around Brentwood in search of rival gang members to attack and kill.  One group of MS-13 members spotted Cuevas and Mickens walking down residential Stahley Street.  Recognizing Cuevas, they called the Saenz brothers and were granted permission to kill the girls.  Several MS-13 members then chased down and attacked both Cuevas and Mickens, wielding baseball bats and a machete, striking each of the girls numerous times in their heads and bodies, while the Saenz brothers’ car drove around watching for police.  After the murders, the group retreated to the Saenz brothers’ home in Central Islip, where they changed clothes and hid the weapons.

Mickens, whose body was discovered later that evening on Stahley Street, not far from Cuevas’s home, sustained significant sharp force trauma to her face and blunt force trauma to her head.  Cuevas, whose body was discovered the following day behind a house adjacent to where Mickens’s body was found, sustained significant blunt force trauma to her head and body and multiple lacerations.

October 10, 2016 Murder of Javier Castillo

In October 2016, the MS-13 targeted 15-year-old Javier Castillo because he was believed to be a member of the 18th Street gang, one of MS-13’s principal rivals.

On October 10, 2016, Jairo Saenz and other members of the Sailors clique convinced Castillo, who lived in Central Islip, to drive with them to Freeport – approximately 30 miles away – to smoke marijuana.  Once there, they met Alexi Saenz and other Sailors clique members.  The group then lured Castillo to an isolated marsh area in Cow Meadow Park, where they attacked him, taking turns hacking him to death with a machete.

Afterwards, the MS-13 members dug a hole and buried Castillo’s body, which was not recovered until one year later, in late October 2017.  Castillo was determined to have suffered multiple sharp force injuries to his head, neck, torso and extremities.

October 13, 2016 Murder of Dewann Stacks

On the evening of October 13, 2016, the Saenz brothers and other members of the Sailors clique of MS-13 were driving around Central Islip and Brentwood in search of rival gang members to attack and kill.

That night, they spotted 34-year-old Dewann Stacks and, believing him to be a rival gang member, Alexi Saenz authorized his murder.  While Alexi Saenz drove around watching for police presence, Jairo Saenz drove three MS-13 members, armed with two machetes and a baseball bat, to attack Stacks.  The three armed MS-13 members got out of the car, and beat and hacked Stacks to death on American Boulevard, a residential street in Brentwood.  Stacks sustained severe sharp and blunt force trauma to his face and head, leaving his body nearly unrecognizable.

    January 30, 2017 Murder of Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla

On the morning of January 30, 2017, Alexi Saenz and other members of the Sailors clique of MS-13 spotted 29-year-old Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla inside El Campesino Deli in Central Islip.  Alvarado-Bonilla was wearing a football jersey bearing the number “18,” which led the MS-13 to conclude that he was a member of a rival gang, and they plotted to kill him.

After Alvarado-Bonilla was observed in the Deli, Jairo Saenz drove MS-13 members to get a mask and another vehicle, both of which would be used when committing the murder.  Alexi Saenz provided the clique’s 9-millimeter handgun for use in the murder.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., a masked MS-13 member entered the deli, approached Alvarado-Bonilla from behind, and shot him multiple times, killing him.  One of the bullets pierced through Alvarado-Bonilla’s head and struck the chest of a female employee of the deli, who was standing directly in front of him.  The deli employee survived the gunshot wound.

    Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy

For a year and a half, from approximately April 2016 through March 2017, in order to finance the illegal operations of the Sailors clique, the Saenz brothers obtained wholesale quantities of cocaine and marijuana, which they distributed to other Sailors clique members and associates for street-level sales in Brentwood and its surrounding areas.  After the sales, the profits were turned over to the Saenz brothers, for use in, among other things, purchasing firearms for use by clique members, wiring money to MS-13 leaders in El Salvador and buying additional narcotics for further distribution.

Today’s guilty plea is the latest achievement in a series of federal prosecutions by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York targeting members of the MS-13, a violent, transnational criminal organization.  The MS-13’s leadership is based in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, but the gang has thousands of members across the United States.  With numerous branches, or “cliques,” the MS-13 is the most violent criminal organization on Long Island.  Since 2003, hundreds of MS-13 members, including dozens of clique leaders, have been convicted on federal felony charges in the Eastern District of New York. A majority of those MS-13 members have been convicted on federal racketeering charges for participating in murders, attempted murders and assaults.  Since 2010, this Office has obtained indictments charging MS-13 members with carrying out more than 70 murders in the Eastern District of New York, resulting in the convictions of dozens of MS-13 leaders and members in connection with those murders.  These prosecutions are the product of investigations led by the FBI’s Long Island Gang Task Force, which is comprised of agents and officers of the FBI, SCPD, Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, Suffolk County Probation Office, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police, the Hempstead Police Department, the Rockville Centre Police Department and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Assistant United States Attorneys John J. Durham, Paul G. Scotti, Justina L. Geraci and Megan E. Farrell are in charge of the prosecution, with the assistance of Paralegal Specialist Kerry Ucci and Automated Litigation Specialist Michael Compitello.

Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event at the Malaysia Masters 2025 badminton tournament in Bukit Jalil, while HS Prannoy lost his pre-quarterfinals clash, according to Olympics.com.

Former world No. 1 Srikanth, currently ranked 65th in the badminton world rankings, endured a tough battle against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen before securing a 23-21, 21-17 win at the Axiata Arena in KL Sports City. The contest lasted nearly an hour.

Nhat Nguyen, ranked world No. 33, dominated the early exchanges and led 11-4 at the interval of the first game. However, the Indian shuttler flipped the script completely to register a thrilling victory.

Srikanth’s opponent in the quarter-finals of the BWF Super 500 tournament will be France’s Toma Junior Popov, who defeated Indian player Ayush Shetty 21-13, 21-17 in another round of 16 fixture.

India’s Sathish Karunakaran also bowed out after losing 21-14, 21-16 to Christo Popov, Toma’s brother and doubles partner.

World No. 35 HS Prannoy’s run at the Malaysia Masters ended in the pre-quarterfinals with a 21-9, 21-18 defeat to Japan’s 23rd-ranked Yushi Tanaka in a 39-minute encounter.

The three exits leave Srikanth as India’s lone remaining singles contender at this year’s Malaysia Masters.

None of the Indian women’s singles players, including two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, managed to cross the opening round hurdle.

Meanwhile, India’s doubles challenge will also continue on a single front, with Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila reaching the top eight in the mixed doubles category.

The Indian duo beat France’s Lea Palermo and Julien Maio 21-17, 18-21, 21-15 in a hard-fought match to set up a quarter-final encounter against the People’s Republic of China’s Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin, bronze medalists from the 2023 World Championships.

Prerana Alvekar and Mrunmayee Deshpande’s journey in women’s doubles ended after a 21-9, 21-14 defeat to Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhih-Yun, the world No. 17 pair and eighth seeds. (ANI)

  • MIL-OSI China: Queen Wen courts Paris once more

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

Even without the strength in numbers, the Chinese tennis contingent, led by Paris Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and rising men’s ace Buyunchaokete, is approaching this year’s French Open with major ambitions.

With the memories of her golden finish at Paris 2024 still fresh, Zheng returns to Roland Garros touted as one of the title favorites for this year’s French Open, but insists that she will keep her expectations in check, noting that it’s a different challenge to go all the way at the clay-court major compared to her Olympic triumph.

Zheng Qinwen returns a shot during the women’s singles round of 16 match between Zheng Qinwen of China and Bianca Andreescu of Canada at the WTA Italian Open in Rome, Italy, May 12, 2025. (PHOTO / XINHUA)

“I will say that I always feel confident going back to Roland Garros. But, at the same time, I know it is still a bit different,” Zheng said in her pre-tournament interview.

“Because the Olympic Games were one week, while the French Open is two weeks, so you need to prepare your body for a longer time and you need to win seven matches in a row, one more match than the Olympics.

“You have to be prepared for every type of player. This year, I will try to be more complete with my clay court game,” said Zheng, who was eliminated by unseeded Ukrainian Elina Avanesyan in the third round last year.

The 22-year-old world No 8, who described the Olympic gold medal as her biggest career achievement so far, has backed up her French Open credentials with a series of resurgent performances on clay recently.

Zheng’s Rome Open quarterfinal win against bitter rival Aryna Sabalenka last week, having previously lost to the Belarusian star six times in a row, has certainly served up an extra confidence boost.

Still, she needs to step it up a gear if she is to break out from a strong and open field in the French capital.

“I always tell my team that, if I could choose which Slam to win first, it would be Roland Garros,” said Zheng, who made an immediate mark by fighting into the fourth round on her Roland Garros debut in 2022 in her first full year on the WTA Tour.

“It’s the major where I reached my first Grand Slam round-of-16. I have a lot of special memories here.

“But, last year, the result didn’t go the way I wanted. So, this year, I will come back with a stronger mindset and more fight.”

A surging group of international stars, led by the mighty No 1 seed Sabalenka, four-time Roland Garros winner Iga Swiatek and red-hot Rome Open champion Jasmine Paolini, suggests that Zheng will need to dig deeper on the tricky and unpredictable surface.

“It’s not easy to finish a point (on this surface). Everybody has to fight so hard, which makes tennis on clay more interesting,” she said.

“I don’t think there is any player that I don’t want to play against, or that I want to avoid, because, in my head, I’ve already prepared. If I want to win the title, I have to be able to beat everyone there.

“It doesn’t matter who I face, because if I finish the whole tournament without beating a player that I have never beaten before, that’s not fun. I love the challenge.”

Alongside Zheng, only one other Chinese woman, world No 42 Wang Xinyu, has made it into the main draw through rankings, while 89th-ranked Yuan Yue also qualified as a substitute.

    Men’s solo entry

On the men’s side, only world No 70 Buyunchaokete appears in the draw, with 71st-ranked teen star Shang Juncheng and No 81 Zhang Zhizhen both having withdrawn due to injuries.

The quartet makes it the smallest Chinese contingent in three years at Roland Garros, which seems to be an almost sacred place for Chinese tennis, thanks to Zheng’s Olympic victory and retired legend Li Na’s groundbreaking 2011 French Open win.

China’s Olympic mixed doubles silver winner Wang (pairing with Zhang) will also need to draw on her own sweet memories at Paris 2024 to change her fortunes and fuel her first deep run in this year’s clay court swing.

The 23-year-old power hitter has lost three out of four matches on clay this season, with her only W being a straight-sets victory over German qualifier Eva Lys in the first round at WTA 500 Strasbourg, France, on Monday.

She was stopped by Kazakhstan’s 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina the following day, and has not yet rediscovered her best form on clay, it seems.

In the men’s draw, China’s sole entry Buyunchaokete, known as “Little Bu” by fans, has raised his fair share of expectation by overcoming a strong field to reach the final of an ATP Challenger event in Turin on clay.

Bu’s first run to a final on clay at an ATP tournament saw him upset Italy’s former world No 9 Fabio Fognini in the second round, and Argentina’s No 52 Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the semis, before being stopped by Kazakhstan’s eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the title match.

That deep run, though, has helped Bu overtake his compatriot Zhang as China’s top-ranked player on the ATP Tour, further consolidating his career upswing since his breakthrough results last fall, when he reached back-to-back Tour-level semifinals on home soil, first at the ATP 250 Hangzhou Open, and again at the ATP 500 China Open.

“Gradually, I think I’ve become more confident and comfortable facing this level of competition on the Tour,” said Bu.
