In 2021 CVGT’s CEO Jason Russell, won the Bendigo Advertiser’s Footy Tipping competition with the prize being 100 square metres of turf from another local company Coolabah Turf.

CVGT Employment, who also facilitate the City’s Parks and Open Space apprenticeship program, approached the City wishing to donate the turf to a local project.  The City gratefully accepted the offer and decided to use the turf on a newly irrigated parcel of land at Lake Weeroona located at the railway end of the lake.

City of Greater Bendigo Sports Fields and Reserves Coordinator Tyrone Downie said this was a terrific gesture by CVGT and the City was pleased to accept the turf donation to help grass an area at the northern end of the lake.

“Best of all the City’s Parks and Open Space apprentices will lay the turf, making this project a truly great collaboration between the City and CVGT,” Mr Downie said.

“The City has recently installed new irrigation in this area so the turf donation has come at a great time.

“Lake Weeroona is Greater Bendigo’s most visited and loved parklands and this project will help improve the northern end of the lake area.”

CVGT Employment CEO Jason Russell said trying to find a local community project to donate 100square metres of turf to has been an interesting problem to have, and why it has taken a few years to resolve.

“Coolabah Turf have been really supportive and understanding through the process,” Mr Russell said.

“We are thrilled to donate it to the City for this project that not only beautifies this open space at Lake Weeroona but also gives the City’s CVGT apprentices a chance to work on a great collaborative project. We look forward to seeing the end result.”

Coolabah Marketing Manager Josh Kerr said Coolabah Turf are passionate about building healthy communities, one green space at a time, ditching screen time for green time and inspiring active bodies and healthy minds.

“We have a great relationship with the City of Greater Bendigo and are proud to supply instant turf for the Lake Weeroona project for the community to enjoy,” Mr Kerr said.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Beijing releases document with initiatives to improve physical and mental health of schoolchildren

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: People’s Republic of China in Russian – People’s Republic of China in Russian –

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) — Beijing recently unveiled a new comprehensive initiative to promote the holistic development of primary and middle school students, highlighting the relationship between physical and mental health.

According to a person in charge of the Beijing Commission of Education, the new policy consists of five sections and 20 specific measures. The focus is on integrating aspects such as cultivating high moral character, cultivating mental ability and physical skills, developing teamwork and hard work, and strengthening three key types of relationships: peer-to-peer, teacher-student, and parent-child.

This means that for the first time, relevant departments in the Chinese capital have clearly linked physical health indicators, such as reducing myopia, obesity and spinal curvature, with psychological resilience, which in turn implies synchronous improvement of both aspects.

Some of the key measures include requiring students to participate in at least one school club, hobby group or extracurricular activity, organizing a “Teacher-Student Dialogue Day” and encouraging parents to spend 15 minutes daily for open conversation and one hour doing activities with their children.

Under the new policy, schools are encouraged to increase team sports such as football and basketball to develop students’ resilience and persistence. In addition, special psychological support corners and stress-relief rooms will also be set up in common areas of school campuses.

The document also provides for a division of responsibility between society and government. Professional social workers and volunteers will assist in the implementation of educational programs to improve health, while city authorities will ensure stricter control over online content and the amount of time spent in front of any screen, in close cooperation with students, their parents and educational institutions.

Notably, Beijing will implement a three-tiered assessment system to monitor progress at the city, district and school levels. The system will use key indicators such as physical fitness data, mental health data and disease prevention dynamics to track trends, refine prevention strategies and intervention methods to ensure policy effectiveness.

The initiative follows Beijing’s previous reform initiatives, including the introduction of 15-minute breaks between classes and guaranteed daily physical education classes, underscoring the city’s commitment to prioritizing health in education under the principle of “health first.” As a senior official at the Beijing Education Commission emphasized, the new policy is an innovative endeavor aimed at creating a special “Beijing model” that promotes the all-round development of students. -0-

  • MIL-Evening Report: Ferocity, fitness and fast bowling: how Virat Kohli revolutionised Indian cricket

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Vaughan Cruickshank, Senior Lecturer in Health and Physical Education, University of Tasmania

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday.

While his Instagram message just said this was the “right time”, his poor recent Test form, mental fatigue and desire to spend more time with his family, charity foundation and expanding business empire have been suggested as other influential factors.

During his 14-year Test career “King Kohli” has been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up, and his absence is a huge blow as the Indians prepare to tour England next month.

The megastar scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

These numbers put him in the top five Indian test batsmen of all time, but his legacy extends far beyond his batting achievements.

Kohli, 36, quit Twenty20 Internationals last year (after India won its second world title). He may continue to play one-day internationals.

Rising to the top of Test cricket

Kohli has been the greatest Indian batsman of his generation.

He made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and played his final match against Australia in January.

He scored centuries against every country he played against, with more than half of these coming overseas.

His seven Test centuries in Australia is the second most by an overseas batsman.

He was at his peak between 2014 and 2019, when he averaged more than 60 in Test cricket and became one of the “fab four” (the world’s best Test batsmen) alongside Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

    Read more:
Is Steve Smith set to become the best? What data says about Test cricket’s elite 10,000+ run club

This period also included six double-hundreds in 18 months, and 13 months as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

    Kohli the leader

Kohli is India’s greatest ever Test captain.

His tenure from 2014 to 2022 was a golden age for Indian Test cricket.

India won 40 of 68 Tests (59%) in this period and did not lose a Test series at home. India was the number one ranked Test team in the world from 2016–20 and won its first Test series in Australia in 2018–19.

These statistics make Kohli one of the most successful Test captains of all time.

Beyond these numbers, he was a charismatic and aggressive captain who redefined India’s approach to Test cricket by bringing a more competitive edge to the team.

He drove higher expectations around fitness, training intensity and fast bowling that continue to shape Indian cricket.

Mandatory fitness testing and improved dieting and recovery practices, which redefined the team’s standards, are attributed to Kohli’s leadership.

Similarly, Indian success was strongly contributed to by Kohli encouraging the development of a world-class pace bowling attack, which marked a significant shift from the spin-heavy approach of Indian cricket.

    Controversies

While Kohli’s energy, passion and intensity contributed to his success as batsman and captain, they also led to numerous confrontations with opposition players, which some believed to be disrespectful and arrogant.

His intense celebrations and assertive body language also drew criticism from conservative cricketing audiences.

Kohli’s collision with Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test versus Australia.

Many of these controversies have occurred in Australia, where Kohli enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Australian players and crowds.

Examples include flipping the bird to the crowd, making sandpaper gestures (in reference to the 2018 Australian ball tampering scandal, also known as Sandpapergate) and shoulder-barging young Australian batsman Sam Konstas.

What will his Test legacy be?

For more than a decade, Kohli has been the heartbeat of the Indian Test team, and his retirement marks the end of an era.

He reshaped the mindset of Indian cricket and cultivated a faster, fitter, fiercer, more successful team.

Kohli was also one of the greatest ambassadors of Test cricket, and has played a significant role in ensuring the game remains relevant in an era increasingly dominated by T20 cricket.

He made Test cricket aspirational again because he wanted it to thrive. He knew India needed to dominate the hardest format to be respected.

His social media reach (272 million followers on Instagram and 67.8 million on X) is more than Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Tom Brady combined, and was even referred to by LA2028 Olympics organisers when they announced cricket’s entry into the games.

In recent days, Kohli has been described as “a modern-day giant”, a “provocateur in chief”, and “his generation’s most profound figure”.

Love him or hate him, he elevated the spectacle of Test cricket. His electric energy brought the best out of India and its opponents and made him impossible to ignore when batting or fielding.

As respected cricket writer Peter Lalor noted recently:

Nobody is irreplaceable, but nobody can replace Virat.

Heading into these three open-to-all town halls, Wyden has held 1,117 open-to-all town halls in keeping his promise to hold at least one town hall each year in each of Oregon’s 36 counties.
“As we remember our fellow Americans over Memorial Day weekend who made the ultimate sacrifice, I know Oregonians are always grateful for the freedoms of speech and assembly these heroes fought to preserve,” Wyden said. “And as a senator proud to represent all Oregonians, I believe it’s more important than ever to exercise those freedoms statewide with direct open-to-all conversations to hear Oregonians’ opinions and answer their questions. I’m glad Congresswoman Hoyle will be joining me in Coos and Curry counties, and look forward very much to those discussions on May 24, as well as my town hall in Jackson County on May 25.”
“I’m proud to join Senator Wyden for town halls on Memorial Day weekend to remember those who lost their lives in service to our country and to hear directly from south coast residents on issues of importance to them,” said Hoyle. “Their opinions help us to better represent their interests in Washington, D.C., which is essential for a healthy democracy.”
The schedule for the town halls with both Wyden and Hoyle on Saturday, May 24 is as follows:

  • MIL-OSI China: Lewandowski back for Barca at Espanyol with title in sight

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

FC Barcelona can either seal the La Liga title on Thursday night with a win away to local rival Espanyol, or use the match as a celebration, depending on Real Madrid’s result at home to Mallorca on Wednesday.

If Madrid fails to beat Mallorca, Barca will be champions without kicking a ball, but otherwise, there will still be work to do against a side that is not totally safe from relegation.

Barca’s 4-3 win at home to Madrid on Sunday leaves the title in its grasp, although Jules Kounde is still injured and Inigo Martinez will miss the game through suspension.

Robert Lewandowski(R) of FC Barcelona vies with Marcos Alonso of Celta Vigo during the Laliga football match between FC Barcelona and Celta Vigo, in Barcelona, Spain, on April 19, 2025. (Photo by Joan Gosa/Xinhua)

On a positive note, Marc Casado and Robert Lewandowski could both play as Barca looks to complete a league and cup double.

Thursday could also confirm Athletic Bilbao’s place in the Champions League if the Basque side wins away to a Getafe that is on a run of five straight losses.

The Williams brothers are still out for Athletic, but Alex Berenguer and Andoni Gorosabel both return after suspension, and Benat Prados could be available after suffering a shin injury a week ago.

Athletic could have its Champions League place confirmed before kick-off if Real Betis fails to win away to Getafe in an early kick-off. The Seville-based outfit is six points behind Athletic with nine to play for, but with a worse goal difference.

Rayo, meanwhile, still has a good chance of a top-eight finish and a place in Europe next season.

Osasuna is also aiming to play in Europe, although the Pamplona side has to play Atletico Madrid which has been inconsistent lately, with more problems on the road than in front of its own fans.

Julian Alvarez will be back for Atletico after suspension, but Alexander Sorloth will surely start again after scoring four against Real Sociedad at the weekend.

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

World No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy will headline Australia’s most prestigious tournament in 2025 and 2026, organizers announced on Wednesday.

The government of Australia’s state of Victoria said in a statement that Melbourne will be the home of the Australian Open for the next two years, with Northern Ireland’s McIlroy committing to play in both tournaments.

The Victorian government and Golf Australia announced that the 2025 tournament would be held at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from December 4 to 7 and that Kingston Heath Golf Club would host the 2026 event.

Both courses are on the Melbourne Sandbelt, a renowned golfing region some 20 kilometers southeast of the city center.

“I’m proud to be committing to the Australian Open for the next two years, especially with it being played on the world-class Melbourne Sandbelt, somewhere I’ve always wanted to play professionally,” McIlroy said in a statement.

The announcement comes after McIlroy in April won The Masters Tournament for the first time, completing a career grand slam of golf’s major championships.

The 36-year-old McIlroy won the Australian Open in 2013 when it was played in Sydney. He has not played a professional tournament in Australia since 2014.

Australia’s 9News network reported that McIlroy will be joined in the 2025 field by top-ranked Australians Cam Smith, Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott.

Steve Dimopoulos, Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, described McIlroy’s commitment to play at the Australian Open as a “major coup” that will be “fantastic” for the state’s visitor economy.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Improved PE and sport for more than 240,000 pupils with SEND

Source: United Kingdom – Government Statements

    Press release

Improved PE and sport for more than 240,000 pupils with SEND

Government launches Inclusion 2028 programme which will improve access to PE and school sports for pupils with SEND.

Hundreds of thousands of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are set to benefit from a national programme to improve access to PE and school sports.

Backed by an initial £300,000 for the first year, the Inclusion 2028 programme will work with a network of 50 Youth Sport Trust lead schools to provide expert training to teachers to help them create and deliver lessons that meet the diverse needs of all pupils – including those with physical, sensory, cognitive, communication or social and emotional needs.

In doing this, the programme encourages more varied and creative teaching methods that engage all learners – in turn, improving attendance and creating a school environment where all children can achieve and thrive. It will also provide leadership opportunities for 1,500 pupils who will develop activities for their peers as part of the programme, with schools across the country set to host events inspired by the Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games. Alongside this, it will see 600 new extra-curricular clubs established offering pupils, including those with diverse needs, the opportunity to take part in a range of sports such as tennis, boccia and archery after the school day.

Taking part in physical exercise can support muscle and motor skills, as well as a sense of achievement, confidence, social connection and better mental health.

The programme supports the government’s Plan for Change in breaking down barriers to opportunity and ensuring every child and young person can achieve and thrive. It expects to work with over 8,000 schools supporting more than 240,000 pupils and 10,000 teachers and practitioners in England across the three years.

School Standards Minister, Catherine McKinnell said:

Sport has the unique power to break down barriers, build confidence and foster a sense of belonging.

Inclusion 2028 will ensure young people experience the benefits of sport and physical activity, from improved mental wellbeing and teamwork skills to greater resilience.

By building a generation of teachers with the skills and confidence to deliver high-quality PE and school sport for all pupils, we can ensure that every child gets their chance to shine.

Paralympian, Laura Sugar MBE PLY, said:

As a Paralympian and a PE teacher I see first-hand the importance of inclusive sport for all and access to PE in schools for disabled children, so I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of this campaign which is so close to my heart. Growing up as a child with a disability I have experienced how physical activity can help improve day-to-day life and enhance mobility, as well as social and mental benefits so it is important that we make PE accessible for all.

It’s fantastic that the new direction of the Inclusion 28 programme will support the calls made by ParalympicsGB’s Equal Play campaign to ensure that no disabled child is excluded from school sport, and I know that together the Consortium can help drive important, positive change.

Eden Hays, 13, a pupil at Brooklands Middle School, said:

Sport is important for everyone’s mental health and wellbeing, but especially for children with disabilities, where life is that bit harder. Being active has helped keep me both physically and mentally strong and ensured opportunities both in and out of school. Opportunities not just in competing, but both leading and educating too. Sport can be adapted for everyone and should be enjoyed by all.

CEO of the Youth Sport Trust, Ali Oliver MBE said:

We are pleased the Department for Education is continuing to support the transformation of PE and school sport, and access to daily physical activity for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Youth Sport Trust believes these opportunities play a fundamental role in the education and enrichment provided by schools, and the experience offers an invaluable opportunity for young people to express themselves, enjoy movement, and develop essential life skills.

Too many children, particularly those with additional needs, are either missing out or still face barriers to inclusion and there is so much more to do to create the capacity capability and opportunity in the system for every child.

We feel incredibly proud to continue leading the delivery of this important programme working alongside a distinguished collaboration of partners all of which are equally committed to this mission. Together through our work with schools, teachers and young people we know inclusive practice can give every child equal access, increase participation, and as a result enjoy the life-changing benefits of play and sport.

Inclusion 2028 is delivered by a consortium of the Youth Sport Trust, ParalympicsGB, Swim England, Activity Alliance and nasen and supported by the Association for PE and Sport for Confidence.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Tuberville Receives an Update on Guam and the Status of Golden Dome

    US Senate News:

Source: United States Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama)
WASHINGTON – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) spoke with LTG. Robert Rasch, Executive Officer of the Guam Defense System Joint Program Office, and LTG. Heath Collins, Director of the Missile Defense Agency during a hearing for the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces. During the hearing, Sen. Tuberville received an update about the United States’ missile defense capabilities on Guam and how the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is continuing to develop Golden Dome.
Read Sen. Tuberville’s remarks below or watch on YouTube or Rumble.

    ON GUAM UPDATES:
TUBERVILLE: “[…] General, how are we doing on Guam? We get the Aegis System started about what three years ago, maybe a little less. How are you doing? Getting better?”
RASCH: “Senator, getting better. Lots of teamwork across the services and with Missile Defense Agency. And my hat goes off to General Collins and his team who really led the Department of Defense in early implementation [in] all the legwork for laying the ground efforts for the military construction that will occur there. […] MDA demonstrated this last year early Aegis Guam capability with a flight test that was executed there very successfully. That work was really the starting point. That equipment has stayed on-site. It offers a credible deterrence against potential adversaries while the Army then does its planning to come in the [20]27 time frame with the next, what we call, tranche one of capability for Guam. It is a lot of consensus building. It is a lot of teamwork across the Department of Defense. This is the homeland. So, in in several ways, we’re learning a lot of lessons that we believe can also apply to the Golden Dome team as they continue that mission set. But [I am] very optimistic that the Army is going to meet its mission that will have a credible capability on [the] island in the time frame we lay out.”
TUBERVILLE: “Have we decided who is going to operate it?”
RASCH: “Well, that decision, as we build out the overall command and control capability, the C2 for the defense of Guam would typically fall to the Air Force to conduct that overall coordination. But it will be manned jointly as we have both Navy systems, Air Force systems, [and] Army systems on the ground. We’ll have, you know, servicemen and women from all of those services operating it typically under an Air Force leadership who will then report to the Combatant Commander on the plane.”
TUBERVILLE: “Does that includes Reserve[s or the] National Guard?”
RASCH: “Sir, it absolutely can. And we’ve—even with the small footprint the Army has had on [the] island today with the Task Force Talon—which is the THAAD battery, we’ve relied heavily on the Guam National Guard who provides a security force for that unit that’s operating away from a typical Army base. A great job of those soldiers, supporting that mission truly defending the homeland. And within the Army, there’s talk about potentially expanding that mission set for the guard members on Guam. [This is] still under discussion, so I can’t get ahead of those decisions as they play out. But I believe all things are on the table at this point.”
TUBERVILLE: “Thank you. I know it’s a long process, […] long process. I mean, how many years do you think we’ve got left [to be] fully operational?”
RASCH: “Senator, I believe we will be improving this capability forever, and defense never rests because offensive threat never rests. So, we will continually evolve. The point of our effort is to try to get as much capability as soon as possible. And capability isn’t just a thing. It’s not just, you know, a launcher. It’s not just a radar. It’s not even just a command and control. It’s soldiers, you know, airmen, you know, all the folks actually manned this equipment, ensuring they’re properly trained. It’s ensuring that we have the proper sustainment tail on [the] island to support it, that we can sustain it not just for a day, but for years in time. So, we’ll be at this for a while.”
TUBERVILLE: “I defended a different offense every week, if you’re a football coach. You gotta change, don’t you?”
    RASCH: “Absolutely, Senator.”
    ON MDA DEVELOPMENTS:
    TUBERVILLE: “Thank you.
General Collins, thank you for the footprint you have in my state of Alabama [at] Redstone Arsenal. We’re proud of all the work you’re doing. How much of MDA’s effort and investment in Golden Dome do you expect to take place in Huntsville? And do you expect to request any additional resources for maintenance or buildings or anything like that in the future?”
COLLINS: “Well, Sir, [the] Missile Defense Agency is really proud of being part of the Tennessee Valley at Redstone Arsenal. Certainly, a large contingent of our workforce is at Redstone Arsenal. And as well as many of our industry partners are in that area as well. And so, I can’t give you an exact percentage, but certainly the engineers, the program managers, the contracting officers, the entire workforce of Missile Defense Agency and the associated industry members are gonna be very busy and very devoted to making any of the parts of Golden Dome real.”
TUBERVILLE: “You’re building things right now too, right? You’ve got things under construction—I think the last time I was there.”
COLLINS: “Yes, Sir. We’re doing them. We’re in the middle of a ground test facility infrastructure update, which is a fairly large renovation and construction project that’s going on. And that’s going on right now to help get us ready for the ground test infrastructure we need to support next gen[eration] missile defense. And as we start digesting and dissolving the Golden Dome requirements, there may be additional requirements that we need to make sure we’re ready to go.”
ON THE ROLE SPACE PLAYS IN GOLDEN DOME:
TUBERVILLE: “I got one more question. If we got time here. General Collins, I wanna ask you about our space sensors, which is [an] absolutely critical component of any effort to develop the next generation missile defense capability. Last year, the U. S. put a new hypersonic and ballistic tracking space sensor satellite in orbit. Do we have any plans, either as part of the Golden Dome architecture [or] independently, to expand that capability?”
COLLINS: “Yes, sir. We as well believe that a very effective and resilient space layer is going to be critical to the future missile defense requirements of the homeland as well as our deployed forces. We rely on space assets today as part of our kill chain for initial tip-off, and we will continue to do that. The Space Force, Space Development Agency, will operationalize the HBTSS capability. The relationship we have with Space Force is we may prototype technology that is required and prove it out for missile defense. The Space Force will operationalize that capability as we move forward, and HBTSS will be foundational. That type of technology will be foundational to hypersonic missile defense in the future. And we’re working on future prototyping space sensor capabilities, in particular, discriminating space center to help improve ballistic missile defense in the future as well. We’ll prototype and space force will operationalize. And so, space will be very key to protecting the homeland and our deployed forces in the future. Thanks, Senator.”
    TUBERVILLE: “Thank you. Mr. Chairman.”
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP and Aging Committees.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Whatever happened to Barbie’s feet? Podiatrists studied 2,750 dolls to find out

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Cylie Williams, Professor, School of Primary and Allied Health Care, Monash University

    elinaxx1v/Shutterstock

What do you get when a group of podiatrists (and shoe lovers) team up with a Barbie doll collector? A huge opportunity to explore how Barbie reflects changes in the types of shoes women wear.

It all started with the blockbuster Barbie movie in 2023. In particular, we discussed a scene when Barbie was distressed to find she didn’t have to walk on tip-toes. She could walk on flat feet.

Soon, we had designed a research project to study the feet of Barbie dolls on the market from her launch in 1959 to June 2024. That’s 2,750 Barbies in all.

How this scene from the Barbie movie inspired our research project.

In our study published today, we found a general shift away from Barbie’s iconic feet – on tip-toes, ready to slip on high-heeled shoes – to flat feet for flat shoes.

We found, like many women today, Barbie “chooses” her footwear depending on what she has to do – flats for skateboarding or working as an astronaut but heels when dressing up for a night out.

We also question whether high heels that Barbie and some women choose to wear are really as bad for your health as we’ve been led to believe.

The movie that sparked the #barbiefootchallenge

Barbie’s feet – in particular her tip-toe posture – triggered TikTok’s #barbiefoottrend and #barbiefootchallenge. When the movie was released, fans made videos to re-create how Barbie stepped out of her high-heeled shoes, yet stayed on tip-toes. Margot Robbie, the Australian actor who played Barbie in the movie, was even interviewed about it.

Despite the obvious interest in Barbie’s iconic foot stance, there had been no specific research on her feet or choice of footwear.

So our research team decided to look at how Barbie’s feet had changed over the years to reflect the kinds of shoes she’s worn, and how that ties in with her different jobs and growing diversity.

    What we did

One of our research team has an extensive Barbie doll collection. This guided our search through online catalogues to examine the foot positions of 2,750 Barbie dolls.

Our custom-made audit tool allowed us to classify Barbie’s foot posture as tip-toe (known as equinus) or flat.

We also looked at when the dolls were made, whether they were diverse or inclusive (for instance, represented people with disabilities), and whether Barbie was employed.

Our device allowed us to classify Barbie’s feet as (a) tip-toe (equinus) or (b) flat.

    What we found

We were surprised that Barbie’s high-heel wearing foot posture was no longer the norm. Barbie does, however, still wear high heels when dressed for fun.

We found, just like Barbie in the movie, she’s made a transition from high heels (equinus foot posture) to flat shoes (flat foot posture), especially when employed.

We suggest this mirrors broader societal changes. This includes how women choose footwear according to how much they have to move in the day, and away from only wearing high heels in some workplaces.

Barbie ditched her high-heel wearing foot posture as she climbed the career ladder. In the 1960s, all Barbies tip-toed around, but by the 2020s, only 40% did.

Meanwhile, her resume expanded, going from not being represented as having a job to 33% representing real-world jobs.

Barbie’s been an astronaut since before the Moon landing.
    8th.creator/Shutterstock

She was an astronaut in 1965, before the Moon landing, and a surgeon when the vast majority of doctors in the United States were men.

US laws changed in the late 80s, supporting women to own businesses without a man’s permission. And Barbie mirrored this.

She started trading stilettos for flats and strutting into male-dominated fields. Barbie didn’t just break the mould, she kicked it off with low-heeled shoes.

Barbie also evolved to better reflect the population. We found a moderate link between her having flat feet and representing diversity or disability.

For example, she chooses a stable flat shoe when using a prosthetic limb. But it was also great to see her break footwear stereotypes by wearing high heels when using a wheelchair.

    Are high heels so bad?

Some celebrities, the media and public health advice warn against wearing high heels. But we know women (and Barbie) choose to wear them from time to time. In fact it’s discussions about women’s shoe choices that also gave us the idea for this fun research.

For instance, health professionals often link high-heeled shoes with developing bunions, knee osteoarthritis, back pain or being injured.

However bunions, and knee and back pain are just as common in people who don’t wear high heels.

Studies exploring the risk of high heels are also often performed with people who don’t usually wear high heels, or during competitive sports.

We couldn’t find any investigations exploring the long-term effect of wearing high heels.

Research does show that high-heeled shoes make you walk slower and make it harder to balance.

But high heels have different features, such as heel height or shape. So different types of high heels probably present a different risk. That risk also probably differs from person to person, including how often they walk in heels.

    Lessons for all shoe lovers

But back to Barbie and lessons we learned. We know Barbie is a social construct that reflects some aspects of the real world. She chooses heels when fashion is the goal and flat shoes when needing speed and stability.

Rather than demonise high heels, messages about footwear need to evolve to acknowledge choice, and trust women can balance their own priorities and needs.

As Barbie’s journey shows, women already make thoughtful shoe choices based on comfort, function and identity.

Establishing measures to attract and retain talents and counter brain drain is a priority for the Commission, as human capital is fundamental for the competitiveness of research and innovation and of the European economy.

The new European framework for research careers and the new European Charter for Researchers[1] support attractive careers and working conditions in universities and beyond, contributing to a balanced mobility of research talents between EU countries and sectors, to retaining European talents, and to attracting international ones.

Horizon Europe[2] supports the implementation of the new framework, for example via the Human Resources Excellence in Research award[3], a Mutual Learning Exercise[4] supporting the exchange of good practices by Member States[5], and a Talent Ecosystems pilot call supporting attractive careers for early-career researchers[6]. Additional measures to ensure attractive careers are expected in the European Research Area (ERA) Policy Agenda 2025-2027[7] with Horizon Europe funding. A proposal for a legislative ERA Act is due in 2026, including measures to further strengthen researchers’ careers and mobility.

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)[8] play a pivotal role in retaining European researchers, bringing European talents back to Europe and attracting foreign ones[9]. A new Choose Europe MSCA action is foreseen to be launched in 2025 to provide excellent researchers coming to Europe with pathways to more stable and attractive employment.

The European Universities alliances funded by Erasmus+ continue to support the European academic community, as they offer enhanced global visibility and attractive career development within the institutions of the alliances and across diverse ecosystems[10].

  • MIL-OSI Security: 5 Defendants Federally Charged in Los Angeles, Orange Counties as Part of Nationwide Crackdown on Child Sexual Abuse Offenders

Source: Office of United States Attorneys

LOS ANGELES – Attorney General Pamela Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel recently announced an unprecedented national initiative to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities. The FBI launched a coordinated effort with all field offices in a sweeping action to identify, track and arrest child sex predators.

Since the end of April, the FBI arrested 205 subjects across the country and rescued 115 children during Operation Restore Justice. These subjects are accused of various crimes including the production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material, online enticement and transportation of minors, and child sex trafficking. They include school leaders and registered sex offenders, among others.

In the Central District of California, a seven-county jurisdiction that includes Los Angeles and Orange counties, five defendants were charged with federal crimes as follows:

    • Andrew Castillon, 47, of El Monte, was arrested May 1 on a federal criminal complaint charging him with possession of child pornography. A federal magistrate judge ordered him released on $5,000 bond. Castillon’s arraignment is scheduled for May 27 in United States District Court in Los Angeles. Assistant United States Attorney Thi H. Ho of the General Crimes Section is prosecuting this case.
    • Jose Olvera, 34, of North Hollywood, was arrested May 1 on a federal indictment charging him with two counts of distribution of child pornography and five counts of possession of child pornography. He pleaded not guilty to all charges at his arraignment and a June 23 trial was scheduled in this case. A federal magistrate judge ordered him jailed without bond. Assistant United States Attorney Mikaela W. Gilbert-Lurie of the General Crimes Section is prosecuting this case.
    • Steven Martin Nuss, 66, of San Juan Capistrano, was arrested May 9 on a two-count federal grand jury indictment charging him with distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and a federal magistrate judge ordered him jailed without bond. He is scheduled to go to trial on July 1. Assistant United States Attorney Melissa S. Rabbani of the Orange County Office is prosecuting this case.
    • David Eugene Parker, 55, of La Palma, was arrested April 30 on federal grand jury indictment charging him with two counts of possession of child pornography. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and a federal magistrate judge ordered him released on $100,000 bond. A June 24 trial date is scheduled in this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Lauren E. Border of the General Crimes Section is prosecuting this case.
    • Gregory Cole Jr., 30, of Lancaster, was arrested April 30 in Arizona after he failed to appear at his trial earlier last month in which a jury found him guilty in absentia of one count of production of child pornography, one count of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, and one count of receipt of child pornography. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 23, at which time he will face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of life in federal prison. Assistant United States Attorney Derek R. Flores of the Violent and Organized Crime Section is prosecuting this case.

Two additional individuals were arrested in Los Angeles for sexual exploitation of a child and charges of coercion and enticement, respectively; however, those cases are being prosecuted in separate districts.

“Sexual predators who target children leave emotional scars that can last a lifetime,” said United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “Along with our law enforcement partners, we seek to bring a measure of solace to victims and put criminals on notice that they risk lengthy prison sentences and severe penalties for harming children.”

“The amount of child predators arrested during Operation Restore Justice should shock the conscience of any law-abiding citizen and parents or guardians, in particular,” said Akil Davis, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.  “Each day, our agents are tackling criminal allegations involving children, whether it be online dangers such as ‘sextortion,’ emerging nihilist extremist networks such as ‘764,’ or children being groomed by someone close to them. We urge caretakers of all children to educate themselves about these constant threats targeting the most vulnerable members of our society.”

As the nation marked National Child Abuse Prevention month in April, the timing of this effort was a culmination of countless hours by hundreds of FBI agents. It further underscores the FBI’s unwavering commitment to protecting children and raising awareness about the dangers they face. While the Bureau works relentlessly to investigate these crimes every day, April serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention and community education.

The FBI takes a proactive approach to identify unknown individuals involved in the sexual exploitation of children and the production of child sexual abuse material. We do that through our Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Forces (CEHTTFs) located in each field office. This allows the FBI to combine resources with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The FBI also partners with the nonprofit National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which receives and shares tips about possible child sexual exploitation received through its 24-hour hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST and on missingkids.org.

In 2004, the FBI created the Endangered Child Alert Program (ECAP) to identify individuals involved in the sexual abuse of children and the production of child sexual abuse material. The program is a collaborative effort between the FBI and the NMCEC.

The FBI also offers resources for parents and caregivers to stay engaged with their children’s online and offline activities. The FBI’s Safe Online Surfing (SOS) program teaches students in grades 3 to 8 how to navigate the web safely.

The FBI urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspected exploitation of a child through our tiplines at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office.

Reps. Russell Fry (SC-07) and Mike Levin (CA-49) Introduce MAPOceans Act to Enhance Access to Recreational Waterway Data

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Russell Fry (SC-07) and Mike Levin (CA-49) introduced the Modernizing Access to Our Public Oceans (MAPOceans) Act, legislation that will modernize public access to vital data about U.S. waterways. By requiring the Secretary of Commerce to digitize and display real-time marine data through GPS and smartphone applications, the bill aims to improve the recreational experience for boaters and anglers, support safe and legal activity on the water, and strengthen coastal economies.

Building on the success of the MAPLand Act (2022) and the MAPWaters Act (which passed the House in January 2025), the MAPOceans Act would require the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to consolidate, standardize, and digitize public information about U.S. marine waters and make that information easily accessible in real time.

    Specifically, the bill would:

    • Provide real-time status updates on which waterways are open or closed to entry or watercraft, low-elevation aircraft, or diving.

    • Digitize restrictions related to motorized propulsion, fuel type, and specific types of watercraft (e.g., motorboats, kayaks, personal watercraft, airboats, ships).

    • Display fishing regulations and restrictions, including no-take zones, marine protected areas, and rules about specific equipment or bait (such as circle hooks or descending devices).

    • Publish continuously updated geographic information (GIS) data on navigation, bathymetric information, and depth charts.

    • Require the Department of Commerce to partner with non-federal entities—including states, Indian Tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, private industry, data experts, and academic institutions—to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.

“The MAPOceans Act is a commonsense bill to help Americans enjoy our nation’s waters and coastlines more safely and responsibly,” said Congressman Fry. “Whether you’re a fisherman or a boater, this bill gives individuals the easily accessible real-time information they need and ensures that Americans who rely on our waterways—whether for work or recreation—have the tools to access and enjoy our natural resources.”

“Our district is home to terrific coastal waters that offer recreational and economic benefits to our entire region,” said Congressman Levin. “Every resident and visitor should be able to easily access clear information about how to responsibly enjoy these areas. This bipartisan bill will help ensure that’s the case while promoting the long-term protection of these natural resources. I look forward to working with Rep. Fry to advance this important legislation through the House.”

Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Angus King (I-ME) reintroduced the bill in the Senate, where it passed the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee by voice vote in March 2025.

The bill has received endorsements from the following organizations: South Carolina Boating & Fishing Alliance, American Sportfishing Association, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Marine Retailers Association of the Americas, International Game Fish Association, Center for Sportfishing Policy, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), and National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).

“Boaters and anglers want to follow the rules, but too often those rules are buried in scattered websites or outdated PDFs,” said President and CEO of the South Carolina Boating & Fishing Alliance Gettys Brannon. “For a coastal state like South Carolina, where access to our waterways drives tourism, supports small businesses, and defines our way of life, the MAPOceans Act will bring clarity to the chaos. It gives the public one clear source to understand where they can fish, anchor, or operate. It’s a long-overdue fix that makes federal waterways more accessible and more manageable for everyone on the water. We thank Congressman Fry for his leadership on this important legislation.”

“The MAPOceans Act will provide many benefits for the millions of saltwater anglers who fish our nation’s marine waters every year,” said President and CEO of the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) Glenn Hughes. “This legislation will ease access to information on federal fishing regulations through navigation tools and mapping applications, helping anglers and boaters stay up-to-date with changing regulations and opportunities. ASA and the recreational fishing industry thank Representatives Fry and Levin for their leadership of this legislation, which will simplify access to a wide range of recreational information, allowing anglers to feel confident they’re in compliance with the law as they’re heading out on the water.”

“America’s incredible saltwater recreation opportunities should be easily enjoyed by all,” said President and CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership Joel Pedersen. “The MAPOceans Act will help simplify boating and recreational fishing information by digitizing not easily accessible regulations and making them readily available to the public. TRCP thanks Representatives Fry and Levin for their leadership to introduce and advance this important public access legislation.”

“Accurate charts are one of the basic safety tools for all boaters,” said Government Affairs Manager for Boat Owners Association of The United States, BoatUS David Kennedy. “The MAPOceans Act will ensure the information collected by federal agencies will get on the chart plotters, mobile devices and even paper charts that boaters rely upon.”

“The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) applauds the introduction of the MAPOceans Act, which would provide recreational boaters and anglers with more easily accessible resources and information to enjoy America’s waterways in a responsible and safe way,” said NMMA President and CEO Frank Hugelmeyer. “NMMA appreciates Representatives Fry and Levin’s support of the $230 billion recreational boating community and their steadfast leadership on this issue.”

Several organizations also submitted this letter.

Congressman Fry serves on both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. To stay up to date with Congressman Fry and his work for the Seventh District, follow his official Facebook, Instagram, and X pages and visit his website at fry.house.gov.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: England awaits era-defining tournament as new Women’s Rugby World Cup Trophy unveiled and further tickets released

    Source: City of Sunderland

    – Government, host locations and teams celebrate 100 days to go to Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025’s opening match in Sunderland

     – New Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy introduced to mark an era-defining tournament that will feature representatives from all regional associations for the first time.

    – Unstoppable momentum is building in England with a record 300,000 tickets already purchased and a further wave of tickets released today at 09:00 BST.

    – New trophy to embark on a nationwide tour of the eight host locations bringing fans and communities across England closer to the tournament.

With just 100 days to go until Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 kicks off in Sunderland, World Rugby has today unveiled a bold new trophy – a symbol of the game’s unstoppable global rise – and announced the release of additional tickets for what promises to be a generational moment for the sport.

The record-breaking tournament has already surpassed all expectations with 300,000 tickets already sold, more than double the total attendance from RWC 2021 in New Zealand, and is now firmly on course to become the biggest Women’s Rugby World Cup in history, not just in scale, but in impact.

Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Managing Director Sarah Massey said: “We are just 100 days away from welcoming the world to England for what will be the biggest and best Women’s Rugby World Cup yet.

The excitement is real, and the momentum is building by the day, as this tournament promises to be an unforgettable experience for everyone. With more tickets going on sale today, don’t miss out on seeing rugby’s powerful personalities and unstoppable athletes take to the global stage.”

To mark the 100 days to go milestone, World Rugby unveiled the new Women’s Rugby World Cup Trophy at London’s Battersea Power Station. The reveal, broadcast live on the BBC Morning Live, brought together senior figures from World Rugby, RWC 2025 LOC, UK Government, host cities, and Rugby World Cup legends to celebrate the progress and energy of the women’s game and look ahead to an era-defining tournament.

Crafted in sterling silver and plated with 24-carat gold, the newly designed trophy is a modern expression of excellence and ambition. It fuses history and future by retaining the iconic twin handles of the original prize while introducing a sleek, oval silhouette, with names of past champions engraved on its base acknowledging the trailblazers who have shaped the game.

The world map etched into the surface symbolises the game’s universal reach, celebrating the nations that have competed on the Rugby World Cup stage and the new stars who will carry the game forward. For the first time at RWC 2025, all six World Rugby regions will be represented across the 16 nations involved with a South American team, Brazil, making their debut on the sport’s biggest stage.

As previous recipients and representatives of future players who may lift it high, a group of Women’s Rugby World Cup champions and legends of the game including Rachael Burford (ENG), Gill Burns (ENG), Monalisa Codling (NZL), Katy Daley-McLean (ENG), Fiao’o Fa’amausili (NZL), Sarah Hunter (ENG), Farah Palmer (NZL), Anna Richards (NZL) and Melodie Robinson (NZL) were involved in the trophy’s design process.

World Rugby Chief of Women’s Rugby Sally Horrox said: “This trophy represents far more than a tournament; it reflects a movement. A movement fuelled by passion, shaped by trailblazers, and driven by the next generation of women and girls stepping into the game around the world.

“Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is set to redefine what’s possible in women’s sport. The new trophy is a worthy emblem of the incredible athletes who will compete in England, and of the legacy we are building together with our partners, starting with the RFU, and through programmes like Impact Beyond 2025.”

Former English international and Rugby World Cup winner Katy Daley-McLean added: “With the potential on this tournament being the biggest Women’s World Cup yet, it seemed an appropriate time for a new trophy. This trophy hopefully connects the past to the present allowing all to remember the trailblazing of those that came before us.”

The trophy will now embark on a nationwide tour of England over the next three weeks, bringing fans and communities closer to the tournament in the build-up to kick-off. All eight host locations – Brighton and Hove, Bristol, Exeter, London, Manchester, Northampton, Sunderland and York – are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new trophy and engaging their communities ahead of their first matches.

A joint-venture between World Rugby and the RFU, with funding from the UK Government, Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 is designed not only to deliver a worldclass tournament, but to create a lasting, positive impact for women and girls in sport. This includes investing in programmes that improve access, participation and experiences at all levels of the game.

At the heart of this domestic legacy is Impact ’25, led by the RFU and supported by UK Sport, which is already delivering strong results across England and the home unions. More than 850 clubs have received support to grow the women’s game, while over 1,400 female coaches and match officials have been newly qualified. Girls’ participation is up 9.3% year-on-year, and £2.7 million has been invested to improve facilities and inclusivity in clubs. Community grants, sanitary provision and skills training have also reached thousands of new participants, with a strong focus on building confidence, connection and opportunity.

RFU Executive Director of Women’s Game Alex Teasdale said: “2025 is a groundbreaking year for women’s rugby and we are thrilled to be host nation for what is set to be the biggest Women’s Rugby World Cup in history. We are already seeing huge strides forward in the women and girls’ game, thanks to the building anticipation for the tournament and our Rugby World Cup legacy programme Impact ’25. We are excited to see the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 encourage and inspire the next generation of women and girls to play and watch rugby.”

Globally, Impact Beyond 2025 is World Rugby’s strategic legacy programme, designed to harness the power of this tournament to grow the game and promote gender equity worldwide. Focused on three pillars—participation and profile, careers and leadership, and capability and expertise—the programme includes initiatives such as Rugby Rising Play, the sport’s first global participation programme for girls, and a series of six regional summits aimed at strengthening women’s rugby around the world.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “In just 100 days, we will host the biggest and bestsupported Women’s Rugby World Cup in history. As well as creating unforgettable moments, the tournament will help to inspire the next generation of girls and boys, bring communities together, and grow the game for years to come.

“But this tournament is about more than what happens on the pitch. Through our Plan for Change and the Impact ’25 legacy programme, we’re investing in 850 clubs across the country — upgrading facilities, opening up access, and inspiring more people to get involved in the game they love.”

Following recent ticket sales phases, the public response has been overwhelming. With over 300,000 tickets now sold, fans have shown an unprecedented appetite for women’s rugby, reinforcing England 2025 as the must-attend sporting event of the year and breaking the attendance record held by the last edition in New Zealand (150,000).

More tickets go on general sale today at 09:00 BST on a first come, first served basis, including popular matches such as the opening encounter between England and the USA at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

With high demand and limited inventory for some matches, fans are reminded to only purchase tickets through official sources to ensure a safe and secure buying experience and guaranteed entry into the venues. An official resale platform will launch on 24 June, enabling fans who can no longer attend to sell their tickets securely at face value to fellow supporters via tickets.rugbyworldcup.com.

Supporters around the world can also get involved ahead of kick-off by joining the “Road to Twickenham”, a free and fun global fitness challenge powered by Stepathlon. Available now via the Official Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 app, the initiative encourages fans of all ages and abilities to get active, win exclusive prizes, and celebrate the women’s game together as the countdown to the final at Twickenham Stadium on 27 September continues. It’s a powerful way for communities across the world to connect with the tournament and share in the spirit of progress, health and unity

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Have your say to Keep Manadon Moving

    Source: City of Plymouth

Residents, businesses, schools and community groups are being asked for their views on the future of Manadon Roundabout.

The scheme, which is being funded in the most part by the Department of Transport, was given the green light earlier this year.

Plans revealed today show a new initial design, with extra capacity on the entrances to the roundabout, as well as new bus priority and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

In person information events will take place:
Wednesday 21 May, 5.30pm to 7pm, Manadon Sports Hub
Wednesday 4 June, 5.30pm to 7pm, Manadon Sports Hub
Friday 20 June, 4.30pm to 6pm, Manadon Sports Hub
Saturday 21 June, 10.30am to 12.30pm, Central Library

The transformation of under-used green space off Treveneague Gardens into a new park with footpaths, biodiversity enhancements and recreational space for local residents is also in the plans.

A six-week engagement exercise called ‘Keep Manadon Moving’ will allow residents to have their say on the plans through a number of channels and help shape the final design of the scheme.

Manadon Roundabout is at the heart of Plymouth’s transport network. It connects people to their jobs, families, schools and the hospital. It’s also a key gateway to the A38, Tavistock Road and the city centre, linking our community with Devon, Cornwall and the wider UK.

We’ve all been there; experienced long queues at peak times, unpredictable delays, safety risks and unreliable travel. It has to change, not just for us now, but for the future as Plymouth grows.

If we do nothing, congestion will worsen as the city continues to grow, queues will extend dangerously onto the A38, and access to key places like Derriford Hospital, Plymouth Argyle matches and the dockyard will be harder than ever.

Here’s what’s being proposed to fix it:

    • A38 eastbound off-slip widening – expanding to four lanes, increasing capacity and easing traffic entering Manadon Roundabout
    • A38 westbound off-slip widening – creating an extra lane to increase capacity and improve safety
    • A386 Tavistock Road northbound improvements – a new traffic lane heading north, removing the existing merge to improve flow
    • A386 Tavistock Road southbound improvements – a new lane to reduce bottlenecks onto the roundabout and a
    • New signalised junction at Southwell Road to improve access
    • A386 Outland Road improvements – an additional lane on the approach to the roundabout to increase capacity
    • Mannamead Road – New bus priority lane northbound
    • New cycle bridge across the A38 at Manadon – connecting north and south
    • Replacement of the existing pedestrian bridge over the A386 Tavistock Road – Making it fully accessible for all users
    • Improved footbridge over the A38 to the west of Manadon
    • New pedestrian crossing at Southwell Road – safer access for residents
    • New woodland pathways – linking green spaces with the road network.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We must improve Manadon, not just for reliability and efficiency today, but also for the future and we’re determined to get it right.

“At the basis of this will be robust and meaningful engagement across a number of channels, not just with residents, but across a broad demographic of business and organisations.

“So please, look at the plans, fill in the forms, have your say. We have been very clear that resident feedback can shape the final design of this scheme and that’s why your impact is crucial.”

With improvements to bus reliability among the aims for the scheme, Richard Stevens, Managing Director of Plymouth City Bus, said: “We welcome improvements to the Manadon Interchange and are fully onboard with the ethos and vision behind the scheme.

“I’d encourage all bus users to get involved with the engagement process and ensure that their views on the initial design of the scheme are heard.”

1 Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) is a key operating metric. See “Non-GAAP Financial Measures and Key Operating Metrics” for additional information regarding this metric.

2 Non-GAAP Gross profit and Non-GAAP gross margin are non-GAAP financial measures. See “Non-GAAP Financial Measures and Key Operating Metrics” for additional information regarding this metric.

3 Adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP financial measure. See “Non-GAAP Financial Measures” for additional information regarding this metric, including the reconciliations to Operating Profit (Loss), its most directly comparable GAAP financial measure. The Company is unable to provide a reconciliation of Adjusted EBITDA to Operating Profit (Loss), its most directly comparable GAAP financial measure, on a forward-looking basis without unreasonable effort because items that impact this GAAP financial measure are not within the Company’s control and/or cannot be reasonably predicted. These items may include, but are not limited to, share-based compensation expenses. Such information may have a significant, and potentially unpredictable impact on the Company’s future financial results.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures and Key Operating Metrics

To supplement Global-e’s financial information presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States of America, or GAAP, Global-e considers certain financial measures and key performance metrics that are not prepared in accordance with GAAP including:

    • Non-GAAP gross profit, which Global-e defines as gross profit adjusted for amortization of acquired intangibles. Non-GAAP gross margin is calculated as Non-GAAP gross profit divided by revenues
    • Adjusted EBITDA, which Global-e defines as net profit (loss) adjusted for income tax (benefit) expenses, financial expenses (income) net, stock based compensation expenses, depreciation and amortization, commercial agreements amortization, amortization of acquired intangibles, merger related contingent consideration, and acquisition related expenses.
    • Free Cash Flow, which Global-e defines as net cash provided by operating activities less the purchase of property and equipment.

Global-e also uses Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) as a key operating metric. Gross Merchandise Value or GMV is defined as the combined amount we collect from the shopper and the merchant for all components of a given transaction, including products, duties and taxes and shipping.

The aforementioned key performance indicators and non-GAAP financial measures are used, in conjunction with GAAP measures, by management and our board of directors to assess our performance, including the preparation of Global-e’s annual operating budget and quarterly forecasts, for financial and operational decision-making, to evaluate the effectiveness of Global-e’s business strategies, and as a means to evaluate period-to-period comparisons. These measures are frequently used by analysts, investors and other interested parties to evaluate companies in our industry. We believe that these non-GAAP financial measures are appropriate measures of operating performance because they remove the impact of certain items that we believe do not directly reflect our core operations, and permit investors to view performance using the same tools that we use to budget, forecast, make operating and strategic decisions, and evaluate historical performance.

Global-e’s definition of Non-GAAP measures may differ from the definition used by other companies and therefore comparability may be limited. In addition, other companies may not publish these metrics or similar metrics. Furthermore, these metrics have certain limitations in that they do not include the impact of certain expenses that are reflected in our consolidated statement of operations that are necessary to run our business. Thus, Non-GAAP measures should be considered in addition to, not as substitutes for, or in isolation from, measures prepared in accordance with GAAP.

For more information on the non-GAAP financial measures, please see the reconciliation tables provided below. The accompanying reconciliation tables have more details on the GAAP financial measures that are most directly comparable to non-GAAP financial measures and the related reconciliations between these financial measures.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Interactive hub opens to provide support during major city centre transformation works

    Source: City of Wolverhampton

The ‘Urban Room’ will provide drop in sessions at set times, pre-booked meeting opportunities and direct assistance from staff at City of Wolverhampton Council and contractor, Taylor Woodrow.

It will give businesses, residents and visitors easy access to information about the scheme and dedicated support for any concerns or issues they have as the 2 and a half year programme, which started in January, progresses.

The first Urban Room sessions will initially take place between 12pm and 1.30pm on Tuesdays, with the plan to increase the number of sessions over time.

Works on the major £19 million transformation of Wolverhampton city centre are underway on Darlington Street and will move onto Lichfield Street and Queen Square. It follows extensive consultation with businesses, the public and key stakeholders.

The completed scheme will deliver high quality improvements such as wider, brighter, safer streets; vibrant public events spaces; more trees, greenery and seating; and easy access for buses, cycles and taxis.

The aim is to stimulate more visitors and spend with businesses and act as a catalyst for further investment, while contributing to creating a pleasant environment to support and encourage healthy city living lifestyles.

It is the third and final phase of City of Wolverhampton Council’s city centre improvements programme following completed schemes in the Victoria Street and University of Wolverhampton at The Halls areas that have seen regular events staged in the new spaces, increasing city centre footfall and economic spend and attracting new investment such as Superbowl UK, set to open their new venue in the Mander Centre units off Victoria Street on 21 May.

Councillor Chris Burden, the council’s Cabinet Member for City Development, Jobs and Skills, said: “We want people to enjoy our city centre from the moment they arrive, and these works are the next step in our transformation plans that are delivering positive outcomes.

“This is a scheme for everyone, and the Urban Room is another way we are connecting with businesses, residents and visitors to ensure they are supported during the works and fully understand it so they can maximise the opportunities it presents to them.

“Funded totally by external funding, it will create an enhanced walking, cycling and dwell space, as well as infrastructure for events and attractions, and a better environment for city centre living, which will all help boost the local economy.

“The works will also complement other transformational development schemes already underway or in the pipeline in the city centre, including the £150 million Interchange and commercial district, and thousands of new homes coming at Smithgate and Canalside – all helping to create hundreds of new jobs and further investment opportunities.”

Stuart Townsend, Taylor Woodrow Operations Manager, said: “We are excited to announce our drop in sessions for businesses and members of the public to address any queries, concerns, or compliments.

“During these sessions, we will showcase drawings of the scheme, have updates on our social value projects locally, and we will be displaying information, including a video about the scheme.

“Additionally, we will provide information about our chosen charities, The Way Youth Project Board, and have brochures available for career opportunities. “This is a positive step in keeping stakeholders and the passing public updated on how we Taylor Woodrow and the council are working together to deliver a better city centre.”

Funding for the scheme consists of £13.5 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) fund, £3 million from the Towns Fund and £2.6 million from the Active Travel Fund.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Work complete on upgrade for pedestrian zone bollards

    Source: City of Leicester

WORK to upgrade and extend the network of automatic bollards that surround Leicester’s central pedestrian zone is now complete.

Over the past few months, the city council has been replacing old automatic bollards and installing additional units in new areas as part of a range of measures to improve pedestrian safety and manage vehicle access in the city centre.

The new bollards will be lowered to allow vehicles into the pedestrian zone during allowable hours for loading and unloading but will prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering the zone at all other times.

The automatic bollards are designed to rise immediately after a permitted vehicle has entered the pedestrian zone. This is to prevent tailgating and unauthorised entry. Warning signs and red lights are in place to alert drivers of the risk.

Eligible residents and businesses based within the zone will need to use a new authentication system with PIN code to gain entry through the new bollards outside of allowable hours.

Letters detailing the changes have been sent to every residential and business address within the pedestrian zone, advising people of the new access requirements and how to register for authorisation.

One-time use PIN codes can also be issued to those with legitimate reasons for accessing the zone outside of permitted hours.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council director of highways, said: “Leicester’s pedestrian zone was established back in 2006, and the infrastructure installed at that time needed renewing or replacing to ensure it continued to be fit for purpose.

“Over the years, we have also extended the zone to include Church Gate, Haymarket, St Martins, Greyfriars and Hotel Street, so this was also a good opportunity to upgrade and extend the systems we have in place to keep the area secure.

“By upgrading infrastructure and tightening up access for vehicles to the pedestrian zone, we can more effectively clamp down on those who abuse the system and continue to provide an environment for shopping and leisure activities where people can feel safe.”

As part of the package of measures, the number of locations where automatic bollards are in place has been increased to ten.

Existing loading and unloading hours will be strictly enforced, with all delivery vehicles expected to be out of the pedestrian zone by 11am from Sunday to Friday, and by 9am on Saturdays.

Leicester’s pedestrian zone covers an area that’s about the size of seven-and-a-half football pitches and includes the Highcross and Haymarket shopping centres, the streets around the Clock Tower, and the independent shops and cafes in St Martin’s Square and The Lanes.

More information about the new measures can be found at www.leicester.gov.uk/bollards
