  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: HK’s appeal showcased in Qingdao

    Source: Hong Kong Information Services

The Immersive Hong Kong roving exhibition, showcasing Hong Kong’s diversity and its latest developments, opened in Qingdao.

Themed “Hong Kong – Where the World Looks Ahead”, the exhibition invites visitors from Qingdao and elsewhere in Shandong to explore Hong Kong’s unique opportunities and potential in tourism, education, business and investment.

It comprises five thematic zones: Financial Bridgehead; I&T Brain Bank’ Blossoming Creativity; Diversity & Greenery; and Buzzing Sports Action. These feature interactive art projections, light box installations and naked-eye 3D displays, all representing the distinctive appeal of Hong Kong.

At today’s opening ceremony, Director of Information Services Apollonia Liu explained that as 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt & Road Summit – which is hosted each year by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region – three Belt & Road node cities on the Mainland were specially selected as locations for this year’s Immersive Hong Kong exhibition.

The exhibition visited Shanghai last month. Qingdao is the second stop, and will be followed by Chengdu.

Mrs Liu expressed hope that the exhibition will provide an opportunity for Qingdao residents to experience Hong Kong’s charm and spark their interest in visiting the city.

Introducing the exhibition’s highlights, Mrs Liu said the Buzzing Sports Action zone serves as pre-event publicity for the 15th National Games, due to be co-hosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau in November. She remarked that Hong Kong’s cultural and tourism appeal, and various other developments in the city, are showcased in the exhibition through naked-eye 3D displays and interactive games.

With Qingdao having been part of Hong Kong’s Individual Visit Scheme since March last year, Mrs Liu stressed that in addition to boosting tourism-related industries in Hong Kong, the scheme has been successful in fostering cultural integration and people-to-people bonds between Qingdao and Hong Kong.

As the two cities are linked by multiple direct flights operating daily, an excellent foundation has been laid for deepening tourism co-operation, promoting the sharing of resources and facilitating the two-way flow of visitors, she added.

The Immersive Hong Kong roving exhibition, organised by the Information Services Department, runs from today to July 27 at Lion Mall in Qingdao. Admission is free.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Marat Khusnullin: More than 3 thousand km of access roads to small settlements are planned to be updated under the national project “Infrastructure for Life” this year

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – Government of the Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Thanks to the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, sections of regional and local roads are being brought into compliance with the regulations – approaches to villages, settlements, hamlets, etc. In 2025, it is planned to renew 520 approaches to small settlements with a total length of over 3 thousand km. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“Convenient road access to small settlements directly affects the quality of life. Such roads improve the availability of medical care, education, jobs and shops, stimulate the development of local business and agriculture, and improve social ties. High-quality routes contribute to the influx of tourists, investment and new opportunities, which ultimately helps maintain the population and stop the outflow of young people to large cities. In 2025, under the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, we plan to put in order 520 access roads to villages, settlements, hamlets and small towns – this is over 3 thousand km of the regional and local road network,” said Marat Khusnullin.

Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin noted that the development of roads in rural areas is one of the key areas of work for road workers. According to data as of the end of 2024, the length of public roads of local importance passing through rural areas is 776.1 thousand km, of which 406.7 thousand km are paved. “To ensure sustainable growth of the country’s agricultural sector and improve the quality of life of people in rural areas, the state program “Integrated Development of Rural Areas” is being implemented in Russia. Thanks to it, in 2025 about 338 km of roads providing access to settlements and agricultural enterprises will be brought up to standard,” said Andrey Nikitin.

Thus, in the Tula region, a section of the Tula-Belev highway – access to the settlement of Dubna has been repaired. The road provides access to the Mosolov estate with a park, the Church of Peter and Paul, as well as to the site of the annual festival “Orthodox Dubna”, which attracts many guests.

On a 3 km long section, the asphalt concrete surface has already been completely replaced, the shoulders have been reinforced with crushed stone, and the exits, stops and landing areas have been restored. In parallel, road works are being carried out in the village itself under the national project. The length of the sections being repaired is over 2 km.

In the Republic of Mari El, an access road to the village of Markelovo was put into operation after repairs. The length of the facility is 2.5 km. The road leads to socially significant facilities located in the administrative center of the Novotoryalsky District. In total, 14 such facilities with a total length of 97.5 km will be renovated in the region under the national project.

In the Samara Region this year, about 160 km of roads will be put into operation, connecting small settlements with regional centers and key highways. In total, 15 sections leading to 25 villages and hamlets will be updated.

For example, in Krasnoarmeysky District, 5.4 km of the Samara-Volgograd-Pestravka-Leninsky-Kochetkovsky-Butkovsky highway are undergoing major repairs. This is the only route connecting the settlements of Butkovsky and Sofinsky with the regional road network. In addition, this is the route to the main social facilities of the rural settlement of Leninsky, to which these settlements belong. It is also part of the school route.

In the Susaninsky District of the Kostroma Region, a 3.2 km long access road to the village of Medvedki is being brought up to standard. The road connects the settlement with the regional highway Kostroma – Susanino – Buy and allows residents to get to the district and regional centers. The school bus route also passes through here. In addition, the access road provides transport accessibility to the tourist site located in Medvedki – the oldest stud farm, which was founded in 1891 by the merchant Skalozubov.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Boost for travelers and businesses as Germany opens up eGates

Source: United Kingdom – Executive Government & Departments

    Press release

Boost for travelers and businesses as Germany opens up eGates

UK and Germany agree to phased opening of German eGates for UK travellers

    • Germany agrees to phased opening of e-gates for the over 3 million Brits visiting each year
    • Follows UK-EU Summit in May and agreement that there were no legal barriers to allow UK citizens access to e-gates in more EU Member States after the introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System

Millions of UK travellers to Germany will be able to use e-gates in the future thanks to a new agreement made between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today (Thursday 17 July). Part of a landmark bilateral treaty between the two countries.

Germany will roll out the first phase of e-gates access for UK travellers by the end of August, starting with frequent travellers such as Brits with family in Germany or who travel regularly for business. Access for all UK nationals will be possible once Germany has completed  technical updates to its entry systems as it introduces the new EU’s Entry/Exit System.

3.2 million Brits visited Germany in 2023, with numbers growing steadily since the Covid pandemic. Opening up e-gates in Germany, and across the EU, will support UK trade and tourism and boost growth through the Plan for Change.

The agreement follows the successful UK-EU Summit in May, where the UK and EU made clear that there were no legal barriers to even more EU countries allowing UK citizens to use eGates at airports. EU Relations Minister Nick Thomas Symonds also visited Berlin in June to discuss e-gates, among other issues, with German ministers.

Since then, the UK has secured e-gates access for UK citizens traveling to Bulgaria and now into Germany. Other countries and airports have also opened up access, including Portugal (Faro airport) and  the Czech Republic (Prague airport) and Estonia has confirmed they will open up access at (Tallinn airport) in 2026.

EU Relations Minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds said:

eGates can make the slog of travelling through an airport that bit easier, which is why I have been working with the EU and member states to get more airports opened up to Brits abroad.

With £30 billion of services trade between the UK and the EU, this agreement isn’t just good for holidaymakers, it’s good for British businesses too. Making traveling easier between Europe’s biggest economies, to get deals done and boost growth.

The UK and Germany have a trading relationship worth almost £150 billion a year. Germany is the UK’s second largest trading partner behind the USA, where the UK agreed a new trade deal last month.

The UK exports almost £30 billion worth of services to Germany each year, a growing market for British service providers. Services trade, like financial services, IT and consultancy are heavily reliant on face to face meetings and this e-gates agreement will save British firms valuable time.

While many EU countries now allow UK citizens to use e-gates, the government is continuing to work with others to do so.

Source: Rosneft – An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Rosneft and the Ministry of Tourism of the Samara Region presented the second joint project for auto tourists “Zavolzhskie Gorizonty”. The route runs through the natural and cultural attractions of the Samara and Saratov Regions.

The route presentation was organized at the Rosneft gas station in Samara, where the Company’s volunteers held a thematic quiz for car owners with useful prizes. During the presentation, the famous Russian racing driver of the LADA Sport ROSNEFT team Vladimir Sheshenin held an autograph session, during which everyone could take a joint photo with the famous athlete.

Rosneft actively supports initiatives to develop domestic tourism and aims to create comfortable conditions for car travelers. Developing roadside service and improving the level of customer service provided at Rosneft filling stations is one of the Company’s priority areas of activity.

The “Zavolzhskie Horizons” route starts in Samara, where the dacha of the merchant Golovkin is located. The building was built in the early 20th century in the Art Nouveau style and is a cultural heritage site. A distinctive feature of the house, located on a steep bank, is two life-size sculptures of elephants. They are clearly visible from ships passing along the Volga.

On the way out of the capital of the province, travelers can visit the Vertoletka culture and recreation park, which is recognized as the best implemented public space project in Russia and has become the best observation deck in the city. The steep bank offers breathtaking panoramic views of Samara, the majestic Volga and the legendary Zhiguli Mountains.

The route then leads to the Serebro Severa ethnographic center in the village of Yagodnoye, where guests can get acquainted with northern culture, visit a reindeer camp and a village with sled dogs. In ancient Syzran, tourists will meet history at the Spasskaya Tower, the only surviving structure of the 17th-century Syzran Kremlin, a cultural heritage site of federal significance.

The journey along the route ends in Khvalynsk, Saratov Region, in the national park – the center of ecotourism, preserving rare species of flora and fauna, with its holy springs, eco-trails and thematic exhibitions and museums dedicated to representatives of flora and fauna.

“Zavolzhskie Gorizonty” became the second tourist route developed by Rosneft and the Ministry of Tourism of the Samara Region within the framework of the agreement signed in 2024 Memorandum of Cooperation between the Company and the Regional Government.

BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) — The incoming and outgoing passenger flow at the checkpoint of Tianshan International Airport in Urumqi, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, in 2025 exceeded 500,000, up 65.2 percent year on year as of July 14, the Xinjiang Daily reported.

This year, this level of passenger traffic was achieved 77 days earlier than last year, the department added.

According to Luo Minxuan, an employee of the department, over 146 thousand foreigners entered China through the checkpoint at Tianshan Airport during the reporting period, which is 1.3 times more than during the same period in 2024. Among them, more than 39 thousand people took advantage of the visa-free regime.

In addition to the existing 24 international passenger air routes, the airport recently opened two new routes – Urumqi-Tianjin (Northern China)-Osaka (Japan) and Urumqi-Shymkent (Kazakhstan), which once again stimulated the demand for business and tourist travel to foreign countries.

According to Luo Minxuan, the airport has seen a significant increase in the number of family tours abroad and cross-border tour groups. She added that over 60 percent of Chinese citizens who left the country through the Tianshan checkpoint went to five Central Asian countries as well as the Transcaucasian countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. -0-

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: “Immersive Hong Kong” roving exhibition opens in Qingdao (with photos)

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region – 4

The “Immersive Hong Kong” roving exhibition, organised by the Information Services Department (ISD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government  to showcase the diversity and latest developments of Hong Kong through interactive art technology, opened in Qingdao today (July 18).

Co-organised by the Shandong Liaison Unit of the HKSAR Government, the exhibition, themed “Hong Kong – Where the World Looks Ahead”, invites visitors from Qingdao and the entire Shandong Province to explore the unique opportunities and potential for tourism, education, business and investment in Hong Kong.

The exhibition enables visitors to delve into different virtual scenes representing the city, with a creative twist. The five thematic zones, namely “Financial Bridgehead”, “I&T Brain Bank”, “Blossoming Creativity”, “Diversity and Greenery” and “Buzzing Sports Action”, feature multiple interactive art projections, light box installations and naked-eye 3D displays, representing the distinctive appeal of Hong Kong.

Visitors may also enjoy Hong Kong’s vibrant and colourful skyline, illustrated by Hong Kong artist Messy Desk (Jane Lee), at a photo corner in the venue. Promotional videos on Hong Kong and digital panels presenting information about the city, as well as insights from Mainland companies about their experiences in Hong Kong, are also on display, highlighting why the city is one of the most desirable places to visit, study, live, work and invest.

Speaking at the opening ceremony today, the Director of Information Services, Mrs Apollonia Liu, said that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Summit organised by the HKSAR, and that three node cities along the Belt and Road on the Mainland were specially selected to hold the exhibition. The first stop was successfully held in Shanghai last month, attracting more than 180 000 visitors, while Qingdao is the second stop, to be followed by Chengdu.

She said, “The eligible cities of the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) expanded to Qingdao in March last year, enabling residents of Qingdao to explore Hong Kong in a more flexible and convenient manner. In addition to deepening exchanges and fostering cultural integration and people-to-people bonds between the two cities, IVS tourists also represent an important force in driving the business of tourism-related industries in Hong Kong.”

Mrs Liu added that, although Hong Kong and Qingdao are far apart geographically, the two cities are in fact within arm’s reach. They are linked by multiple direct flights operating daily, with a flight time of just over three hours. This offers an excellent foundation for the two cities to further deepen tourism co-operation, promote resource sharing, and facilitate the two-way flow of visitors.

Introducing the highlights of the exhibition, Mrs Liu said a “Buzzing Sports Action” thematic zone has been set up, serving as pre-event publicity for the 15th National Games to be cohosted by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macao in November this year. The cultural and tourism appeal, as well as the latest developments of Hong Kong, is also shown in a comprehensive manner through naked-eye 3D displays and interactive games.

Mrs Liu expressed hope that the exhibition would provide an opportunity for friends from Qingdao to experience Hong Kong’s charm from different aspects, sparking their interest to learn more about Hong Kong and visit the city.

To give Qingdao audiences a taste of Hong Kong’s cultural offerings, a wind instrument performance by two young Hong Kong music talents – the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Suona Principal Ma Wai-him and pianist Aaron Leung – will be staged at the exhibition venue on July 19 and 20.

During the exhibition, an interactive game, “Snap a cool shot @Immersive Hong Kong”, will offer attractive prizes sponsored by Cathay Pacific for two winners. The winner of the Grand Prize will receive a pair of round-trip business class air tickets from Qingdao to Hong Kong, while the runner-up will receive a pair of round-trip economy class air tickets on the same itinerary.

The exhibition is being held at Lion Mall, a major shopping centre in Qingdao, until July 27. Admission is free.

Qingdao is the seventh stop of the exhibition, following its successful staging in a total of six cities in Mainland China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the Middle East between July 2023 and June 2025.

Supporting organisations of the exhibition include the Belt and Road Office of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, Hong Kong Talent Engage, Cathay Pacific, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, and the Kai Tak Sports Park.

More information on the exhibition is available on the dedicated page on the Brand Hong Kong website and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai website.

  • With series on the line, India mull unleashing Bumrah in Manchester

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

Jasprit Bumrah is a weapon India must use sparingly but with the five-test series against England on the line, the tourists are considering playing their pace spearhead in the fourth test in Manchester next week.

The team management has decided that Bumrah, whose workload has been carefully managed since he returned from a back surgery earlier this year, will play three of the five tests in England.

A victory in Manchester would give England an unassailable 3-1 lead. To prevent that, India are considering playing Bumrah, who skipped the second test in Birmingham, in the next match rather than preserving him for the final test at the Oval.

“We know we have got him for one of the last two tests,” assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters after a training session on Thursday.

“It’s pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.”

“But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with the Oval.”

Arguably the best all-format bowler of his era, Bumrah registered five-wicket hauls in both the tests he played on this tour of England, though India lost both in Leeds and Lord’s.

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who suffered a finger injury at Lord’s, did not bat in Thursday’s practice.

Ten Doeschate was confident Pant will reprise his usual roles in front of the stumps with the bat and behind them with the keeper’s gloves in Manchester.

“Look, I don’t think you’re going to keep Rishabh out of the test no matter what,” former Dutch international ten Doeschate said.

“He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third test and it’s only going to get easier and easier on his finger.”

  • MIL-OSI China: China’s retail sales of consumer goods grow 5.5% annually since 2021: Minister

Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

The State Council Information Office (SCIO) holds a press conference on China’s achievements in high-quality commerce development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) in Beijing, capital of China, July 18, 2025. [Photo/Xinhua]

The retail sales of consumer goods in China grew 5.5 percent on average annually over the past four years, and are expected to top 50 trillion yuan (about 7 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2025, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao said Friday.

The retail sales of consumer goods in China rose to 48.3 trillion yuan in 2024 from 39.1 trillion yuan in 2020, Wang said.

According to the World Bank, in terms of actual purchasing power, China’s retail sales of consumer goods surpassed that of the United States, reaching 1.6 times the level of the United States last year.

Consumption has contributed around 60 percent of China’s economic growth on average annually over the past four years, and the role of consumption as the economy’s main engine has continued to strengthen, Wang said.

Sales revenue under trade-in programs in China has surpassed 2.9 trillion yuan as of the end of June.

China’s service consumption continues to grow rapidly, with household spending on services reaching 46.1 percent last year, according to Wang.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), China will continue to reduce restrictive measures in the service consumption sector, Wang said.

From 2021 to 2024, China imported consumer goods worth 7.4 trillion yuan, demonstrating the significant contribution of its vast market to global development.

China has refined its departure tax refund policy, and the total spending by inbound tourists reached 94.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, marking a remarkable increase of 77.8 percent year on year, Wang added.

  • MIL-OSI Asia-Pac: Speech by SCST at completion ceremony of Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza (English only)

Source: Hong Kong Government special administrative region

Speech by SCST at completion ceremony of Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza (English only)
Mr Hext (Chairman of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, Mr Richard Hext), Mr Hunsworth (Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr Nicholas D Hunsworth), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning. As they say, weathering choppy waters is perhaps the trick of the trade of the maritime industry. So, here we are, a trail to our professionalism. It is my great pleasure to join you all today at the completion ceremony of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza. Even despite the weather, it is worth taking a good look at our anchor and hearing what Richard will have to say later, introducing what the Anchor’s importance is.

Founded in 2005, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has long been preserving and promoting the unique maritime history and culture of Hong Kong. As it approaches its 20th anniversary this year, the Maritime Museum’s journey has been remarkable. From its origins at Murray House in Stanley to its current home at Central Pier No. 8, the Museum has evolved into a cultural treasure, showcasing an impressive collection of maritime heritage, welcoming around 100 000 visitors every year, and establishing itself as a vital maritime landmark in Hong Kong over the past two decades. I am also glad to know that the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has been increasingly popular among tourists, with over 20 000 visitors from the Mainland of China and overseas recorded just last year.

Today, I am delighted to witness the completion of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza, one of the Chief Executive’s Community Projects. This milestone, achieved after years of dedicated efforts, represents an exciting new chapter in the development of the Museum. Featuring a striking anchor about 7 metres high and a ship-like pavilion, the Anchor Plaza will provide a brand-new public learning space, inviting visitors to explore Hong Kong’s maritime culture while adding yet another vibrant attraction to the iconic Victoria Harbour. I believe that the Anchor Plaza will draw more people to come and appreciate Hong Kong’s unique history and culture as a port city.

The next part of my speech is actually to give you an idea of what we give to have the museum and the support to the arts and culture scenes. But I think you would rather hear from Richard the story of the Anchor than listen to my speech. So I’m sure when I issue it as the press release, you will be able to learn about it.

As you are all aware, the Government has been sparing no effort in fostering the development of arts and culture in recent years. Museums play an important role in preserving and disseminating cultural heritage. Apart from continuously improving public museum services, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department have been actively providing robust support for private institutions like the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. From thematic exhibitions like “Across Victoria Harbour” that revisit the past of Hong Kong, to the upcoming 2025 Forum for Asia-Pacific Maritime Culture to be held at the Museum, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum has played an integral role in enriching Hong Kong’s cultural landscape and fostering international cultural exchange that complements the Government’s work in a truly meaningful way.

In addition to support from the Government, the successful completion of the great Anchor Plaza and the remarkable achievements of the Museum would not be possible without the dedication of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum team and the unwavering support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, other patrons of the Museum, and the wider community. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this project and to the ongoing growth of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. Let’s join hands to make lasting contributions to the cultural development of Hong Kong.

Let me wish the completion ceremony and the future of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum to weather through the choppy weather like right now, and I wish everybody a good day. Thank you.

  • MIL-OSI New Zealand: Tourism – Queenstown’s triple swing action getting closer to reality

Source: AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand (AJHBNZ)

Queenstown’s newest adventure tourism attraction at the global home of bungy is getting closer to opening, with construction of the hotly anticipated three-person swing well underway.

The Kawarau Swing is the latest innovation created by tourism pioneers AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand (AJHBNZ). Located at the historic Kawarau Bridge, it will be the first three-person adventure swing in the South Island and is on track open in September.

The Kawarau Swing will be accessed off the same viewing deck that receives about 400,000 visitors and spectators a year. Drilling is complete under the viewing deck and this week the steel structure that the swing platform will sit on was lifted into place.

Mechanical components and steel structures are being fabricated off-site and, once the foundation work is complete, things are expected to come together quickly, AJHBNZ CEO David Mitchell says.

When it opens, the Kawarau Swing will be adapted for single, tandem, or three-person rides, swinging guests up to 43 metres high across the Kawarau River before winching them back to the platform on the southern bank of the Kawarau Gorge.

Ideal for families and people seeking a different experience at the world’s first commercial bungy location, the swing will complement AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand’s existing bungy and zipride experiences at the historic Kawarau Bungy Bridge site.

“Not everyone who visits the Kawarau Bridge chooses to do a bungy jump,” Mitchell explains. “That’s why we’ve designed the Kawarau Swing to appeal to people who are seeking a different experience, which hits that sweet spot between the full-on adrenaline rush of a bungy and the pure joy of a zipride.

“As the swing comes to life, all stages of development will incorporate AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand’s proven safety systems, built on more than 30 years of experience in delivering thrilling yet safe adventures,” Mitchell adds.

About AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand

Ever since it was launched with a buzz by AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch back in 1988, AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand has been in the business of fuelling people with courage and adrenaline. The world’s first commercial bungy operation opened at the Kawarau Bridge in November 1988 and AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand has remained committed to levelling up the exhilaration across Aotearoa, with bungy, zipride, swing, catapult, skywalk, skyjump and bridge climb across Queenstown, Taupō and Auckland.

  • MIL-OSI Submissions: Thinking of trekking to Everest Base Camp? Don’t leave home without this expert advice

Source: The Conversation – Global Perspectives – By Heike Schanzel, Professor of Social Sustainability in Tourism, Auckland University of Technology

Purnima Shrestha /AFP via Getty Images

Tourists in Kathmandu are tempted everywhere by advertisements for trekking expeditions to Everest Base Camp. If you didn’t know better, you might think it’s just a nice hike in the Nepalese countryside.

Typically the lower staging post for attempts on the summit, the camp is still 5,364 metres above sea level and a destination in its own right. Travel agencies say no prior experience is required, and all equipment will be provided. Social media, too, is filled with posts enticing potential trekkers to make the iconic journey.

But there is a real risk of creating a false sense of security. An exciting adventure can quickly turn into a struggle for survival, especially for novice mountaineers.

Nevertheless, Sagarmatha National Park is deservedly popular for its natural beauty and the allure of the world’s highest peak, Chomolungma (Mount Everest). It is also home to the ethnically distinctive Sherpa community.

Consequently, the routes to Everest Base Camp are among the busiest in the Himalayas, with nearly 60,000 tourists visiting the area each year. There are two distinct trekking seasons: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October).

High mountains require everyone to be properly prepared. Events which under normal conditions might be a minor inconvenience can be magnified in such an environment and pose a serious risk.

Even at the start of the trek in Lukla (2,860m), one is exposed to factors that can directly or indirectly affect one’s health, especially altitude mountain sickness or unfamiliar bacteria.

We interviewed 24 trekkers in May this year, as well as 60 residents and business owners in May 2023, to explore some of the safety issues anyone considering heading to base camp should be aware of.

    Life at high altitude

First, it’s vital to choose goals within one’s technical and physical capabilities. While the human body can adapt to altitudes of up to 5,300m, the potential risk of altitude mountain sickness can occur at only 2,500m – lower than Lukla.

Proper acclimatisation above 3,000m means ascending no more than 500m a day and resting every two to three days at the same altitude. The optimal (though rarely followed) approach is the “saw tooth system” of climbing during the day but descending to sleep at a lower level.

Residents of the Khumbu region (on the Nepalese side of Everest) are familiar with the problem of tourists not acclimatising, or not paying attention to their surroundings. As one hotel owner said, pointing to a trekker setting out:

He’s going uphill and it’s already late. It’s going to get dark and cold soon. He won’t make it to the next settlement. We have to report this to the authorities or go after him ourselves.

Inexperienced trekkers should hire a local guide. Several we interviewed had needed medical evacuation, including a woman in her mid-20s who had to leave base camp after one night. She found her guides – not locals – online. But they never checked her vital signs during the trek:

[The doctors] said that I had high-altitude pulmonary edema […] it was just really important to come down the elevation. And if I had tried to go higher, it probably would have been really bad.

Health checks throughout the trek are imperative. This includes assessing the four main symptoms of altitude mountain sickness: headache, nausea, dizziness and fatigue. If they appear, the trekker shouldn’t go higher and might even need to descend.

A Sherpa woman at the market in Namche Bazar, Nepal: respect the culture, eat local food.
    Paula Bronstein/Getty Images

    Take time to adapt

Using a reputable local trekking agency might be more expensive, but it will help ensure safety and also familiarise the visitor with the local culture, helping avoid negative impacts on the host community.

Too often, the primary goal of trekkers is a photo on the famous rock at base camp. Once obtained, many simply take a helicopter back to Kathmandu. As a helicopter tour agency owner said:

They don’t want to get back on their feet. The goal, after all, has been achieved. In general, tourists used to be much better prepared. Now they know they can return by helicopter.

Helicopter travel can be dangerous on its own, of course. But this tendency to view the trek as a one-way trip also affects host-guest relations and can irritate local communities.

It’s also important to monitor your food and drink intake and watch for signs of food poisoning. Diarrhoea at high altitudes is particularly dangerous because it leads to rapid dehydration – hard to combat in mountain conditions.

Low air pressure and reduced oxygen exacerbate the condition, weakening the body’s ability to recover. Also, the symptoms of dehydration can resemble altitude mountain sickness.

When travelling in other climate zones or countries with different sanitary standards, there is inevitable contact with strains of bacteria not present in one’s natural microbiome.

A good solution is to spend a few days naturally adapting to bacterial flora at a lower altitude in Nepal before heading to the mountains. Also, try to eat the local food, such as daal bhat, Nepal’s national dish. According to one hotel owner in Pangboche:

Tourists demand strange food from us – pizza, spaghetti, Caesar salad – and then are angry that it doesn’t taste the way they want. This is not our food. You should probably eat local food.

Most of the trekkers we interviewed during this spring season reported experiencing gastrointestinal issues, often for several days.

Overall, diarrhoea-related infections are the leading cause of illness among travellers, including base camp trekkers. Studies conducted in the Himalayas show as many as 14% of mountain tourists contract gastroenteritis, accounting for about 10% of all helicopter evacuations.

In the end, the commonest cause of failure or accident in the mountains is overestimating one’s abilities – what has been called “bad judgement syndrome” – when the route is too hard, the pace too fast, or there’s been too little time spent acclimatising.

A simple solution: walk slowly and enjoy the views.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Huffman Blasts Sec. Burgum, AG Bondi Alcatraz Visit Amid Trump Plan to Reopen Island Prison

Source: United States House of Representatives – Congressman Jared Huffman Representing the 2nd District of California

    July 17, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA) issued the following statement regarding Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Attorney General Pam Bondi’s visit to Alcatraz Island as part of the Trump administration’s bizarre and troubling proposal to reopen the former federal penitentiary – now a treasured national park and historic site – as an active prison for detained immigrants:

“Today I almost felt sorry for Secretary Doug Burgum. He’s a smart guy, a serious guy, and he knows reopening Alcatraz is batshit crazy. But he has to pretend otherwise to stay in Trump’s good graces, so everyone pretends to love the Emperor’s beautiful new clothes while giggling behind his back,” Huffman said.

“As for the merits of this proposal, if you thought “Alligator Alcatraz” was dumb, cruel, and wasteful, you’ll run out of adjectives for this idiotic political stunt,” Huffman continued. “I told Secretary Burgum last month that not a single serious person at the National Park Service – from superintendents to janitors – thinks this is a good idea. It would also be a financial boondoggle – not just the massive amount it would cost to reopen Alcatraz as a prison, but all the money and goodwill the Park Service would lose from closing one of America’s most popular tourist destinations.”

“The bottom line: this is deeply idiotic, transparently political, and ultimately unlikely to happen. The only possible rational explanation for why Pam Bondi was touring Alcatraz today is that she thinks it might be a good place to hide the Epstein files,” Huffman concluded.

Source: US State of North Dakota

North Dakota’s wide-open landscapes are about to come alive with color. Beginning late July and into August, thousands of acres of sunflower fields across the state will explode into vibrant golden blooms, creating a striking contrast against blue prairie skies.

To help travelers capture the beauty of this iconic summer moment, North Dakota Tourism has launched the 2025 Sunflower Field Map, featuring more than 20 confirmed bloom locations. While chasing the blooms, visitors are encouraged to extend their stay and discover the charm of the local communities surrounding these breathtaking fields.

“Our state’s sunflower fields are the gifts that keep on giving,” said Keagan Lautenschlager, a sunflower grower near Kenmare, North Dakota. “This partnership between North Dakota’s growers and North Dakota Tourism is stronger than ever, and we’re excited to welcome visitors to experience the vibrancy, beauty, and uniqueness of these fields. It’s not only about capturing a once-in-a-lifetime view; it’s also a meaningful way to support both tourism and agriculture in our communities.”

Sunflowers are more than just a seasonal attraction—they’re a symbol of heritage. Ukrainian immigrants brought sunflower cultivation to North Dakota in the late 1800s, and today, these golden fields are a testament to both agricultural legacy and cultural pride in the state.

Tips for the Perfect Sunflower Experience:

    • Respect the Fields: Enjoy the view from the roadside and avoid entering fields unless signage or the landowner has given permission. Be mindful of fields that may be undergoing spraying or maintenance.

    • Capture the Best Photos: Cloudy days are ideal for vivid close-up shots, while golden sun hours add a beautiful glow to wide-angle views.

    • Celebrate National Sunflower Day: Save the date for Saturday, August 2, 2025, also known as National Sunflower Day, and join the celebration by sharing your favorite shots using #BeNDLegendary or #NDFieldFinders.

    • Take the Flavor Home: Sunflowers aren’t just beautiful, they’re tasty, too! From allergy-friendly SunButter to local favorites like North Dakota sunflower pie, the seeds are a delicious way to enjoy the experience long after your visit.

Be on the lookout for the North Dakota Sunflower Mailboxes, where visitors can enjoy complimentary edible sunflower seeds available at select field locations while supplies last. Mailboxes stocked with seeds will be placed on-site in areas including Walcott, Langdon, Sharon, Havana, and more starting in late July.

  • MIL-Evening Report: Pragmatic engagement – what Albanese’s visit reveals about China relations in a turbulent world

Source: The Conversation (Au and NZ) – By Edward Sing Yue Chan, Postdoctoral Fellow in China Studies, Australian National University

The Albanese government has faced an increasingly uncertain world since its re-election in May.

US President Donald Trump has cast a long shadow over the Australia–US alliance, raising fresh questions about Canberra’s long-term regional strategy.

Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s approach to foreign policy is reflecting a careful recalibration – one that seeks to balance security partnerships with the pursuit of economic opportunities, especially with Australia’s largest trading partner, China.

Albanese has wrapped up a six-day visit to China which was characterised by a highly pragmatic approach to dealing with the problems and irritants in the bilateral relationship.

    Economic engagement

Albanese’s visit to Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu – cities emblematic of Australia’s political, economic and cultural connections with China – was more than symbolic.

It was a high-profile diplomatic venture, with Albanese meeting both the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

But it was more than a leaders’ summit. A large team of key business leaders in banking, manufacturing, mining and education were on the trip to meet their Chinese counterparts and seek more cooperation.

Economic engagement dominated the visit. As Albanese highlighted before his trip, “my priority is jobs”.

Broader partnerships spanning multiple sectors, including healthcare, education and green energy, were canvassed. The two nations also explored closer cooperation on energy transition and climate change.

Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian has even floated a collaboration on artificial intelligence.

However, the suggestion has been met with caution in Canberra due to ongoing concerns around national security and data governance.

    Cooperate where we can

Beyond trade and investment, the visit also marked an effort to rebuild people-to-people exchanges.

Since last year, Australian citizens have been able to visit China for up to 30 days without a visa. In turn, Australia will welcome more Chinese visitors under a new Memorandum of Understanding promoting Australia as a premier tourist destination for Chinese travellers.

Albanese’s meetings with Xi Jinping and Li Qiang also yielded concrete results.

The official joint statement emphasised economic cooperation, particularly in climate-related areas such as steel decarbonisation, dryland farming and the green economy.

These outcomes align with the Albanese government’s guiding principle: cooperate where we can.

The deeper economic cooperation has been noted in China, where there is an expectation collaboration will continue to accelerate on the back of improved relations.

As James Laurenceson of the Australia–China Relations Institute recently noted, a stronger economic partnership will help foster more resilient ties across the board.

    More independent foreign policy

Other analysts also see increased mutual benefits in the bilateral relationship.

China-watcher James Curran suggests the visit may signal a maturing, more independent Australian foreign policy.

The primary role of Australian statecraft is to do everything we possibly can to avoid a conflict. To avoid ever getting close to a decision about following the Americans into a war of that kind.

This was best illustrated by Albanese’s refusal to provide Washington with a wide-ranging and largely open-ended commitment to support the US in any conflict with China over Taiwan.

Indeed, as Curran observes, Albanese has tried to steer the relationship away from disagreement and towards pragmatic engagement.

Following his meeting with Xi, Albanese was repeatedly asked by Australian journalists if he raised sensitive issues such as Taiwan, China’s military build-up and the South China Sea.

While he confirmed these topics were addressed, he emphasised a preference for peaceful engagement:

[…] we want peace and security in the region. That is in the interest of both Australia and in the interest of China.

Unsurprisingly, the joint statement made no reference to these issues, reflecting a mutual decision to sidestep confrontation in favour of stabilising the relationship.

    Quietly managing differences

This diplomatic posture toward China would appear to be a defining feature of the Albanese government’s second term: strengthening cooperation while quietly managing differences.

Rather than highlighting points of contention, the government is opting to avoid open disagreement where possible.

Overt disputes risk destabilising bilateral ties. If issues are raised publicly, it is unlikely to shift entrenched positions on either side. This explains why the ownership of the Port of Darwin, for example, was not mentioned during Albanese’s meeting with Xi.

Critics, however, argue this risks projecting weakness towards China.

Justin Bassi, executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, warns the government is staying silent in the face of ongoing Chinese coercion:

Australia is only complying with China’s desires when the government says nothing and leaves the public to trust that the threats posed by China are all being dealt with in the classified realm. This is not viable policy. Australia’s sovereignty must not be contingent on Beijing’s preferences.

Even within China, analysts are cautious about Albanese’s approach. As one Chinese scholar told us, “a stable relationship does not necessarily mean a friendly one”.

In fact, while the Chinese media has stressed Australia and China’s shared commitment to regional stability, this was barely mentioned in the official joint statement.

    Mutual interests

Still, there is recognition on both sides that pragmatism rather than ideological grandstanding is the more sustainable path forward.

In sum, Albanese’s visit does not mark a dramatic reset or bold new direction in Australia–China relations. Rather, it signals a shift toward greater realism.

In an increasingly complex and multipolar world, diplomacy grounded in mutual interests, rather than ideology, is not just practical, but may be a growing trend across the globe.

On July 16, 2025, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Sergei Nazarov visited the Chechen Republic on a working visit.

The program of the visit included a working meeting with the Chairman of the Government of the Chechen Republic Magomed Daudov. The issues of development of the special economic zone of industrial and production type “Grozny”, the course of implementation of the federal and republican investment programs, as well as the development of the all-season tourism and recreation project “Veduchi” were discussed. Special attention was paid to the provision of energy infrastructure for the current residents of the SEZ “Grozny”, as well as strengthening control over the implementation of the objects of the VTRK “Veduchi”.

“We see the interest of investors, the activity of residents and the significant economic potential of the region. The task is to ensure the full readiness of the infrastructure and precise synchronization of actions at all levels,” noted Sergey Nazarov.

During the visit, the Deputy Minister also got acquainted with the implementation of the Veduchi VTRK. The participants inspected the engineering and ski infrastructure facilities, including cable cars, trails, pumping stations and an artificial snowmaking system. The site was also attended by the General Director of Kavkaz. RF Andrey Yumshanov, representatives of the Government of the Chechen Republic, employees of contracting organizations and the General Director of the management company OOO CHUS Sulimbek Tsentroyev, who reported on the current stage of work.

Active construction of all planned facilities is underway. In particular, the construction readiness of the VL1 cable car, the largest facility in the complex, has reached 66%. Its commissioning is expected in 2026. And this year, work is planned to be completed on a number of key facilities, including cable cars, ski slopes and an artificial snowmaking system.

“Veduchi is one of the most promising tourism projects in the North Caucasus. It has already received serious support and will continue to develop within the framework of the SEZ mechanism. There is a team here that knows what it is doing. It is important for us to maintain the pace and ensure the smooth implementation of all stages,” the deputy minister emphasized.

Following the visit, proposals were made to federal and regional authorities for further support of the Grozny SEZ and Veduchi VTRK facilities. They will cover priorities in upgrading infrastructure, updating design documentation and financing mechanisms in order to ensure sustainable implementation of strategically important projects.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Simplifying financial requirements for tour operators will make travel to friendly countries more accessible and safer

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Ministry of Economic Development (Russia) – Ministry of Economic Development (Russia) –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The state continues to support the tourism industry, paying special attention to the development of organized tourism to countries with favorable conditions for Russian travelers. The Federation Council approved changes to the legislation that will reduce the financial burden on tour operators working with neighboring friendly states. The list of such countries that meet safety requirements and are popular with Russian tourists will soon be approved by the Russian Government.

According to the new regulations, tour operators that specialize exclusively in trips to neighboring friendly states will be able to form financial security for liability in the amount of 500 thousand rubles – just like companies working in the field of domestic tourism. The new regulations also stipulate that tour operators will be able to ignore the total cost of tours to these countries when calculating contributions to mandatory funds for tour operators in the field of outbound tourism. This approach will preserve the mandatory nature of these funds aimed at reimbursing tourists and returning Russian tourists from abroad, and will also significantly reduce the costs of tour operators, which will ultimately have a positive effect on the price of tours.

“Simplifying financial requirements will allow tour operators to more actively develop new routes, offer more vacation options at affordable prices, and most importantly, provide additional protection for tourists. Travel will become more accessible, while the level of protection of travelers’ rights will remain high. It is important to remember that organized tours are safer than independent trips, as they include insurance, emergency support, and a guaranteed return home if necessary,” said Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dmitry Vakhrukov.

For tourists, these changes mean several important advantages. The cost of tours to friendly countries may decrease, as tour operators will be able to optimize their expenses. In addition, reducing the financial burden will help legalize part of the tourism business, which currently operates in the gray zone.

An increase in the number of companies offering organized vacations will provide greater protection for tourists compared to independent travel: in the event of flight cancellations or other force majeure circumstances, the tour operator is obliged to provide alternative services or organize a return to the home country. Each tourist will be insured by the financial security of the tour operator’s liability and funds of such tour operators, and information about their trip will be recorded in the state system, which will allow prompt assistance if necessary. The transfer of independent travelers to the organized tourist flow will allow better control over the movement of citizens and promptly respond to any crisis situations abroad.

“This is an important and timely measure. It promotes travel to friendly countries, opens up opportunities for the formation of interesting, competitive price offers. For tour operators working in other outbound destinations, this is an opportunity to minimize the total cost of the tourism product, from which the amount of contributions to the FPO is calculated, and therefore reduce the burden on business,” said Deputy General Director for Government Relations and Communications of the tour operator FUN

The federal law will come into force on September 1, 2025 – this is another step towards strengthening tourism cooperation with friendly countries and developing mutually beneficial economic ties.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Marat Khusnullin held a meeting of the Presidium of the Government Commission on Regional Development

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Government of the Russian Federation – Government of the Russian Federation –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin held a meeting of the presidium (headquarters) of the Government Commission on Regional Development, where they discussed the preliminary results of the work and the implementation of indicators within the framework of the national project “Infrastructure for Life”.

“On the instructions of the President, we continue to monitor housing construction as a key driver of regional development. This is important for improving the lives of citizens, stimulating the development of related industries and creating conditions for the comprehensive renewal of settlements. Despite the fact that the urban development potential is more than 463 million square meters, which is slightly higher than last year, we still see a cooling of the market. I ask all heads of regions to take personal control of this issue, to work on increasing the urban development potential, and also to work manually with each developer so that all houses are necessarily delivered on time,” said Marat Khusnullin.

In terms of the implementation of key indicators, Marat Khusnullin noted the Ryazan, Saratov, Lipetsk regions, the republics of Buryatia, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and Perm Krai for their high results. Reports were made by the governor of the Ryazan region Pavel Malkov, the head of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic Kazbek Kokov.

Marat Khusnullin also congratulated the headquarters participants on the extension of the federal highway M-12 “Vostok” to Yekaterinburg. On July 16, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched traffic on the new section of the federal highway M-12 “Vostok” from the city of Dyurtyuli to the village of Achit. Now the route between St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg can be covered in an average of 22 hours – almost twice as fast, and the road from Yekaterinburg to Moscow has become 198 km shorter.

“The new section allowed us to form a high-speed corridor without a single traffic light from St. Petersburg to Yekaterinburg. Travel time to Moscow will be less than 16 hours. At the same time, residents of not only the Urals, but also Siberia will feel a significant acceleration in travel. For Tyumen, Omsk, and Novosibirsk, this entire corridor will also be significant in increasing mobility and saving time. Many thanks to the builders for the excellent facility and to everyone who took part in its implementation,” said Marat Khusnullin.

The issue of road safety was discussed at the headquarters. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with relevant departments, take all measures that will help reduce road accidents, and pay special attention to pedestrian infrastructure and the prevention of road accidents involving children.

During the meeting, preliminary results of the application campaign for financing projects within the framework of treasury infrastructure loans (TIL), which are being launched this year as a continuation of the mechanism of infrastructure budget loans (IBL), were summed up. The curator of the TIL is the Ministry of Construction of Russia, and the operator is the public-law company “Territorial Development Fund”. TILs will serve the same purpose – improving the quality of life of people.

In his report, Minister of Construction and Housing and Public Utilities Irek Fayzullin spoke about the current status of reviewing regional applications for infrastructure projects planned for implementation using treasury infrastructure loans. “The use of treasury infrastructure loans opens up additional opportunities for implementing housing and public utilities projects and socially significant infrastructure projects in the regions. The activity of 89 regions of the country in the application campaign for the provision of treasury infrastructure loans clearly demonstrates the demand and effectiveness of this mechanism in solving problems of improving the quality of life of Russian citizens, including within the framework of the national project “Infrastructure for Life”, – said Irek Fayzullin.

77 regions submitted applications for housing and communal services limits for a total of 183.99 billion.

“The Territorial Development Fund is actively accepting applications for financing infrastructure projects within the framework of the CIC. The regions mainly plan to use these funds for the modernization of housing and communal services, as well as the implementation of social, road transport, and tourism infrastructure projects. The total volume of treasury infrastructure loans for housing and communal services is 292.79 billion rubles. CICs are a continuation of the infrastructure budget loan program, which has already proven its effectiveness and demand among the regions. To date, thanks to the IBC, 507 objects and events have been completed since 2022,” commented Vasily Kupyzin, General Director of the Territorial Development Fund.

As reported by Marat Khusnullin, members of the government commission approved a number of applications for the implementation of projects within the framework of the CIC: the construction of the Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge in St. Petersburg with a CIC volume of 15 billion rubles, the purchase of public transport (buses) in the Kirov region with a CIC volume of 1.4 billion rubles, the reconstruction of the Smolensk-Severny airfield and the renewal of the housing and utilities infrastructure in the Smolensk region with a CIC volume of 3.335 billion rubles.
