    Man arrested following Hawks v Crows Match at UTAS Stadium

    Saturday, 14 June 2025 – 9:15 am.

    A 42-year-old man from Launceston was arrested following an incident at UTAS Stadium on Friday night.
    Shortly after the final siren of the AFL match, the man entered the playing surface, disrupting post-match activities while players and umpires were leaving the ground. Security personnel swiftly intervened, but during the incident, two security guards were assaulted.
    Police attended and arrested the man, who appeared to be intoxicated.
    No injuries were reported. The man was charged with trespass, assault and disorderly conduct, and will appear in court at a later date.

    Serious Crash at Pages Road, Moorleah

    Sunday, 15 June 2025 – 4:06 pm.

    Emergency Services were contacted at 11:37pm on 14 June 2025 regarding a serious traffic crash on Pages Road, Moorleah near the intersection of Cryans Road.
    The vehicle, a grey 2004 Holden Calais sedan, was travelling east, has left the road and then hit trees. The occupants of the vehicle were a 44-year-old man (driver), a 26-year-old woman and a 10-year-old child. The female passenger was transported to the North-West Regional Hospital by ambulance and then flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital via helicopter in a serious condition with head injuries. The male driver and child were uninjured. It is not believed there were any other vehicles involved in the crash.
    The crash is under investigation by Western Crash Investigation Services. Anyone with information, or relevant dash cam footage, is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au.

    The first ever female Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) has been announced by the Prime Minister today.

    Blaise Metreweli CMG will be the 18th Chief in the organisation’s history and the first woman to hold the role, at a time when the United Kingdom faces increased threats from our adversaries.

    Commonly referred to as ‘C’, the Chief has operational responsibility for MI6, and is the only publicly named member of the organisation. They are accountable to the Foreign Secretary.

    She is currently Director General ‘Q’, responsible for technology and innovation in MI6, and has previously held a Director-level role in MI5. She will succeed Sir Richard Moore, who leaves the Service in the autumn.

    The historic appointment of Blaise Metreweli comes at a time when the work of our intelligence services has never been more vital.

    Australia’s rooftop solar industry has renewed calls for a mandatory recycling scheme to deal with the growing problem of solar panel waste. Only about 10% of panels are currently recycled. The rest are stockpiled, sent overseas or dumped in landfill.

    One in three Australian homes now have rooftop solar panels, and new systems are being installed at the rate of 300,000 a year. Meanwhile, older systems are being scrapped – often well before the end of their useful life.

    This has made solar panels Australia’s fastest-growing electronic waste stream. Yet federal government plans for a national scheme to manage this waste appear to have stalled.

    Clearly, solar panel waste is a major problem for Australia. Recycling is one part of the solution. But Australia also needs new rules so solar panels can be repaired and reused.

    What are product stewardship schemes?

    The Smart Energy Council, which represents the solar industry, is calling for a national product stewardship scheme.

    Product stewardship schemes share responsibility for reducing waste at the end of a product’s useful life. They can involve people all along the supply chain, from manufacturers to importers to retailers.

    Such schemes may be voluntary, and industry-led, or mandatory and legislated. Alternatively, they can be shared – approved by government but run by an organisation on behalf of industry.

    Existing schemes manage waste such as oil, tyres, paper and packaging, mobile phones, televisions and computers.

    Depending on the product, a levy is paid by the manufacturer, product importer, network service provider (in case of mobile muster), retailer or consumer – or a combination of these. The money raised is then invested in recycling, research or raising awareness and administering the scheme.

    Establishing a solar panel product stewardship scheme

    Solar panel systems were added to a national priority list for a product stewardship scheme in 2017.

    In December 2020, the federal government called for partners to help develop the scheme, but later stated that no partnership would be struck.

    The government released a discussion paper for comment in 2023. The scheme has not yet been established.

    This is particularly problematic given Australia’s commitment to renewable energy, which will entail a rapid expansion of solar technology.

    Recycling should be the last resort

    Product stewardship schemes assume recycling is the main solution to the waste problem.

    Australia’s National Waste Policy also focuses on on recycling, rather than reuse or repair. This is despite recycling being the last resort on the “waste hierarchy”, just slightly above disposal.

    Solar photovoltaic panels are built to last 30 years or more, and are “not made to be unmade”. They are not easy to dismantle for recycling because they are built to withstand harsh conditions.

    It’s difficult for Australia to influence the design of solar panels, given 99% are imported. Just one manufacturer, Tindo Solar in Adelaide, assembles solar panels on Australian soil, using imported silicon cells.

    Many solar panels are being removed well before their end of life, generating waste ahead of time. This is rarely because they have stopped producing power.

    In our previous research, we found many reasons why people chose to take solar panels down. Consumers are often advised to replace the whole system when just a few panels are faulty. Or they may simply be upgrading to a larger, more efficient system. Sometimes it’s because they want to access a new renewable energy subsidy.

    Renewable subsidies and other solar panel policies should be redesigned to keep panels on roofs for longer.

    Functioning solar panels removed before the end of their life should be reused. This would require new regulations including quality-control measures certifying second-hand solar panels, and second-hand markets. This is a much neglected field of research and development.

    What else should such a scheme include?

    Others have discussed what a solar panel product stewardship scheme could include and the possible regulatory environment.

    We think the scheme should also involve collecting and transporting panels around Australia, including remote areas.

    Unfortunately, existing product stewardship schemes do not differentiate between urban, regional and remote areas. The same is likely to be the case for a solar panel collection and recycling scheme.

    This leaves regional and remote areas with fewer recycling facilities and collection points. With a growing number of large solar projects in Northern Australia, reducing waste is imperative.

    Remote island communities in the Northern Territory bundle up their recyclables and ship it to Darwin. Removed solar panels are then transported to urban Victoria, New South Wales or South Australia for processing. Who should bear the cost of transporting this waste? Consumers, remote regional councils with small ratepayer bases, or manufacturers and retailers?

    A well-designed scheme would help recover valuable resources across Australia for reuse in new products.

    However, large volumes of solar panels would be required for recycling schemes to become commercially viable. That’s why the solar recycling industry is concerned about exporters and scrap dealers collecting panels rather then certified solar panel recyclers.

    Even if the technology for recycling solar panels is nascent in Australia, it’s worth stockpiling panels in Australia for later.

    Considering these issues in the design of a product stewardship scheme would help ensure we can maximise the benefits of renewable energy, while minimising waste.

    This Joint Statement follows the meeting of the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom and Canada on 15 June 2025.

    Today, Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) and Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada met in Ottawa to reaffirm the profound friendship and shared values that unite both nations. The Canada-UK partnership, rooted in a common history and enduring people-to-people ties, continues to grow stronger, with a focus on delivering prosperity and security for the working people of Canada and the UK alike.

    The two leaders discussed the many geopolitical challenges currently facing the world, including in the Middle East and tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, and reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war of aggression.

    The two leaders underscored the importance of a fair, open and predictable global trading system; reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order underpinned by respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity; and committed to advancing peace and trans-Atlantic security.     Growth and Innovation Partnership

    • Trade: Strengthen trade ties as trusted, reliable partners. This will include expanding trade under the Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement. We will establish a new structured UK-Canada Economic and Trade Working Group to deepen our existing trading relationship further, including to address existing market access barriers, to expand existing arrangements into new areas, such as digital trade, and to explore cooperation in the development of critical minerals and sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure. The working group will report back to both Prime Ministers within six months. Canada will seek to introduce legislation this autumn to ratify the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.

    • Semiconductors: Deliver industrial R&D projects to enhance both nations’ complementary strengths in semiconductors, photonics, emerging materials and chip design. They will deepen connections between the innovation rich semiconductor ecosystems in Canada and the UK to help build resilient supply chains and accelerate breakthroughs in this key sector that is driving economic growth.

    • Quantum: Announce a joint commitment to develop secure, transatlantic communications based on quantum technologies, allowing us to connect our national systems and lay the groundwork to create a truly global, next-generation network, with applications across our financial and telecoms sectors.

    • Digital: Mutually reinforce nation-building digital public infrastructure by co-developing policy levers and standards, and common technology components.

    • Artificial Intelligence: Deepen and explore new collaborations on frontier AI systems to support our national security. This will include a partnership agreement to strengthen existing collaboration on AI safety and security between the Canadian AI Safety Institute and UK AI Security Institute, and new Canadian and UK MOUs with leading Canadian AI firm Cohere. Under the Canadian MOU, Cohere will collaborate with the Canadian AI Safety Institute and develop their commitment to building cutting-edge data centres in Canada. Under the UK MOU, Cohere will expand their UK presence to support the delivery of the UK AI Opportunities Action Plan. Both MOUs reflect ongoing collaboration on the application of AI tools in security and intelligence and are rooted in Cohere’s strong foundations in Canada and ongoing commitment to the UK.

    • Biomanufacturing: Strengthen collaboration to deliver economic growth and be better prepared for future health emergencies, including a joint investment of $14.8 million to support joint biomanufacturing research and development that will grow the talent and skills pipeline in both countries, and to help businesses scale.

    • Civil Nuclear: Develop a world-leading fusion energy collaboration and deepen cooperation on nuclear energy from fission to reduce the influence of Russia on our international fuel supply chains.

    • Critical Minerals: Intensify bilateral cooperation by conducting a strategic mapping exercise to pinpoint key critical minerals, infrastructure, production and processing capacities. They will identify projects for joint investment to support secure and sustainable critical minerals supply chain development and  leverage all available financial tools to mobilize funding and drive production to strengthen our manufacturing and mining sectors.

    Enhanced Defence and Security Partnership

    The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation – both bilaterally and through the NATO Alliance and Five Eyes partnership – to safeguard democratic values advance global stability and ensure the safety of our people in an increasingly complex world. To achieve this, they committed to:

    • Ukraine: Further support Ukraine in its self-defence against Russia’s war of aggression. This will include continued support for the Coalition of the Willing and respective efforts to support Ukraine’s domestic defence industrial production. The UK and Canada will continue to work together to support the Air Force Capability Coalition and develop cutting edge aircraft weaponry technology in support of Ukraine.

    • Military Cooperation: Position the Canada-UK defence relationship for further growth across military operations, industrial collaboration, and defence innovation, catalyzed by Canada’s newly announced defence investment trajectory and the UK’s Strategic Defence Review. Canada and the UK will work towards a new permanent arrangement for the long-term and sustainable use of British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) through the “BATUS Future Project”. The Project will deepen the Canada-UK relationship on defence and showcase CFB Suffield as a multi-purpose facility for the development and testing of new equipment and cutting-edge technology which are vital to maintaining our shared security and prosperity.

    • Intelligence: Build on the long history of deep and productive collaboration between our security and intelligence organizations by launching coordinated operational campaigns to combat terrorism and violent extremism, and deepening collaboration on enhanced intelligence collection, including by expanding officer exchange programs.

    • National Security: Tackle evolving state threats together, including sabotage, transnational repression, foreign interference, malicious cyber activity, information manipulation and economic coercion, all of which seeks to undermine our national security and that of our Allies and partners. This will include joint work to invest in civil society organizations actively working to counter digital transnational repression through the Joint Canada-UK Common Good Cyber Fund, a first-of-its-kind multilateral fund aimed at supporting civil society actors at high risk. To kickstart this fund, Canada and the UK are providing $5.7 million in seed funding to the Fund, which will be disbursed over 5 years. They also agreed to strengthen bilateral development and delivery of secure communications products and cutting-edge cryptography and explore new research partnerships to address gaps in AI security and evolve AI models to support national security.

    • Border Security: Strengthen bilateral cooperation to tackle transnational organized criminal organizations engaged in the illicit movement of goods and narcotics, and bolster our response to combat irregular migration, migrant smuggling and human trafficking, including through deeper bilateral information and knowledge exchange.

    They began by discussing the grave situation in the Middle East, agreeing that the upcoming G7 Summit presented an opportunity to come together with partners in pursuit of de-escalation. 

    Turning to the UK-Canada relationship – they had a warm and productive conversation, agreeing that as two like-minded leaders there is huge potential to drive forward our partnership for the benefit of British and Canadian people. 

    Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canada would ratify the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), seeking to introduce legislation to their parliament in the autumn. This will bring huge benefits to UK businesses by lowering tariffs when buying from and selling to Canada. 

    They also agreed to set up a joint taskforce to turbocharge progress on other areas of mutual benefit, including technology and artificial intelligence – in support of shared growth and our national security. The taskforce will also look to make progress on the wider UK-Canada Free Trade Agreement. 

    The Prime Minister said that the world has changed when it comes to trade and the economy, so he wants teams to go as far and as fast as possible, because it is in all of our interests to lower trade barriers with our closest partners.

    Moving on to defence and security, the leaders agreed that there is no doubt that everyone needs to step up at such a volatile time for the world. The Prime Minister reiterated that all NATO allies must come together to advance our collective security in the coming years. 

    They ended on their enduring support for Ukraine, and Prime Minister Carney thanked the Prime Minister for his invaluable leadership on the Coalition of the Willing. 

    They looked forward to discussing this further at the G7 Summit in the coming days.

    “Your win is a major boost for cricket in South Africa, and you have inspired a new generation of cricketers. I call on the nation to come and greet the Cricket World Champions when they arrive back in the country this week,” the President said in a statement on Saturday.

    The President described the win as being built around excellent performances by the batsmen in the second innings.

    There was the brilliant batting by Aiden Markram who scored 136 and the captain, Temba Bavuma with his 66 runs.

    Their match-winning partnership was pivotal in the team’s success.

    The bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada, also kept the pressure on the Australian batsmen and never allowed them to dominate.

    “Coach Shukri Conrad, captain Bavuma and the team have done South Africa proud. They started the match as underdogs but that indomitable spirit, that is a characteristic of our nation, carried the team through.     Expert advisers to help drive economic growth.

    An expert group will assist Ministers on how to maximise the economic benefits of Scotland’s multi-billion technology sector.

    A new Scottish Technology Council will help shape policy, provide a link between businesses and the Scottish Government and promote Scottish tech companies on the international stage.

    The tech sector is already a significant economic asset and employer. Latest figures show Scotland’s 6,800 information and communication technologies enterprises alone employed 67,800 staff in 2022 while the wider life sciences cluster supported 46,900 jobs in the same year.

    Council membership includes industry leaders and academics with a range of experience in international markets, including health and life sciences, financial services, data and AI, advanced manufacturing and space.

    Ahead of the council’s first meeting on Tuesday, Minister for Business and Employment Richard Lochhead said:

    “Innovation is part of Scotland’s DNA. It is embedded in our culture and our society – and it has the potential to turbocharge our economy. From leading the industrial revolution to television, ultrasound and pioneering renewable technology, Scotland’s inventions have helped shape the world around us and transformed industries and lives.

    “Our goal is to help Scotland become a leading tech nation. To ensure the world recognises our pioneering spirit as not just a thing of the past, but as a vital part of our future and to create an environment where businesses and entrepreneurs can flourish, develop new technologies and drive meaningful change.

    “Our world is increasingly fast-paced and the council will provide valuable insight from vastly experienced leaders in their fields, who have built their careers at the cutting edge, as we strive to support the sector to deliver high value jobs for generations of Scots, boost international trade and increase our tax revenue to deliver vital public services.”

    Background

    The initiative fulfils a Programme for Government commitment to establish a council of global business and academic experts to advise government on applying and benefiting from emerging technological trends.

    “In the aftermath of Saturday’s Omagh Pride parade, TUV has been contacted by a number of Christians who were deeply offended by a photograph circulating on social media. The image shows a drag performer posing provocatively beside a text on the wall of Omagh Gospel Hall.

    “For many years, it has rightly been recognised that parades in the vicinity of places of worship must be conducted with respect and sensitivity. This principle has been strictly applied to Loyal Order parades alike.

    “The same standard must apply to pride parades. Yet what we see time and again is that pride events go out of their way to provoke a reaction from people of faith.

    “What happened at Omagh Gospel Hall was a clear display of disrespect. It must be called out — not ignored or excused. The Parades Commission, which regularly imposes conditions on other parades when they pass churches or chapels, must take this matter seriously. I will be raising the issue directly with them and asking for an assurance that conditions will be imposed on pride events this summer in relation to conduct in the vacuity of places of worship to prevent similar offensive behaviour.

    “While the pride movement claims to promote respect, compassion, and tolerance, the reality tells a different story. Pride is not so much about love and diversity as it is about the aggressive propagation of a moral and political agenda that many in Northern Ireland do not share.

    “The photograph taken outside Omagh Gospel Hall underlines this fact. It is not a celebration — it is a statement of imposition.

    “There must be respect for people of all faiths – including Christians.”

    World number one Jannik Sinner wants to use the Halle Open as a chance to bounce back from sleepless nights after his agonising loss to rival Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final this month.

    In a thrilling showdown, Sinner took the first two sets and had three match points in the fourth set, but Spaniard Alcaraz persevered to grind out a 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(10-2) win in five hours and 29 minutes – the longest final at Roland Garros.

    Asked if he had thought about the championship points he failed to convert, Sinner told reporters on Saturday: “Often. It happens. I don’t know how it will look in the future.

    “I think that it is not the most important thing, but I nevertheless try to forget the negative things and see what I can do here” in Halle.

    “I think that for me to play another tournament is positive, because every match is a new beginning, and I must be mentally ready to give my all on the court. Therefore, it is great I can be here in Halle. Yes, I had already a few sleepless nights, but I think every day it gets better.”

    The 23-year-old Italian is the reigning champion at Halle and will seek to defend his crown at the tournament, which starts on Monday, as he gears up for Wimbledon, which will be held from June 30 to July 13 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

    “The first practice session was OK. I hadn’t played since Paris, so my general feelings on the court were not so perfect,” Sinner said.

    “I think a good grass-court player can move well. The ball can bounce a bit funny because of the grass, and you have to serve intelligently.

    “But in general, it is a surface on which I took a step forward last year and we will see how it goes this year.”

    “I would like to send sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who has tragically lost his life in this incident. My thoughts are also with all the other people who have been affected by this very serious fire. 

    “I wish to praise the significant immediate response from all the First Responders and especially our brave firefighters who hurried towards this major fire and put their lives at risk to rescue occupants from the building and tackle the blaze. National resources have been deployed including a dedicated height appliance which has been central to our brave firefighters’ efforts.  

    “Following the evacuation of all flats in the affected building and neighbouring properties in the early hours of Saturday, a rest centre was set up at the Salutation Hotel. Staff from our Housing Service, Perth and Kinross Health and Social Care Partnership and our social work teams have been in attendance at the hotel since the incident to give any support and practical help that we can. 

    “Importantly, we are working to make sure that everyone who has been displaced has suitable alternative accommodation in place. People have also been given food, hot drinks, clothes, replacement medication, nappies, baby milk, pay-as-you-go phones, toiletries, toys and help with their pets. 

    “A large-scale Red Cross team also attended this afternoon to provide further support for anyone that needed it, backing up the Council and HSCP effort through the night and day. 

    “I would like to thank everyone who has helped in the effort to support the householders, including our staff, volunteers and staff at the Salutation Hotel, and we will continue to do all we can to support people affected by the fire. What has been heartening to see at this sad time was the immediate practical support donated by local businesses and charities, from clothing to food and toiletries, and even a brand-new pram for one of the youngest children affected by this incident. 

    “Finally, I would also like to thank the people of Perth and local businesses for their patience and understanding as some unavoidable disruption continues in the city centre.”  

    Following the fire at Scott Street, Perth city centre roads will continue to be affected on Sunday 15th June.  

    Emergency services will remain on scene, and Scott Street and South Street will stay closed to traffic and pedestrians. 

    Detours and signage have been put in place around Perth city centre to provide guidance for drivers. Motorists and pedestrians should continue to avoid the area if possible.  

    Perth and Kinross Council will also continue to provide a range of support for people affected by the fire.

    Flying high over Buckingham Palace, the Royal Air Force had the pleasure of parading a selection of RAF aircraft to celebrate the Official Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III. 

    At 13:00 twenty-nine aircraft took to the skies above the crowds on The Mall and over Buckingham Palace, watched over by Their Majesties’ The King and Queen, alongside other members of the Royal family.  

    The stunning formation was led by four Chinook helicopters from No 18 & 27 Squadrons of RAF Odiham, following the King’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour). 

    The aircraft came from nine different RAF stations, many of whom flew in the VE80 celebrations in May this year. 

    It is an enormous privilege to be part of His Majesty The King’s Birthday celebrations, where the Flypast is an opportunity for the Royal Air Force to honour His Majesty The King, our Commander-in-Chief, on the occasion of his Official Birthday. 

    This year, the flypast will comprise twenty-nine aircraft, including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, rotary wing assets from the Joint Aviation Command, training aircraft from No.22 Group and front-line aircraft from across No.1 Group representing the Air Mobility, Combat Air and ISTAR Forces; as always the flypast will conclude with the iconic Red Arrows.”

    The aircraft, whose main purpose is to secure our skies and protect our citizens at home and abroad have a broad range of uses. These include training, air transport, lift capabilities, air-to-air refuelling, maritime, humanitarian missions, and fast jet combat.

    A Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, RAF Coningsby followed the Chinooks.  

    Wing Commander Andrew Watson, a Typhoon pilot and Officer Commanding 12 Squadron had the task of overseeing the whole flypast. The planning for the whole event has been meticulous over many months. The culmination is the spectacle that was seen by millions of people worldwide. 

    It is a huge personal honour being Mission Commander and coordinating such an impressive array of aircraft fit for His Majesty The King’s Birthday. I cannot be more impressed by the focus and professionalism of both air and ground crew in bringing this spectacle to life.”

    Other aircraft in the formation included a Phenom, Typhoon, an F35 and a C17 Globemaster.  

    The flypast is also thought to be the first time anywhere in the world that a national aerobatic squadron has switched to both a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend for propulsion and a renewable biofuel – known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). This is a premium quality fuel, with a chemical structure almost identical to the regular diesel traditionally used by the aerobatic team for its vapour trails.

    In addition to reducing its carbon footprint, the move demonstrates the RAF’s commitment to new technology as well as becoming more energy secure and less reliant on fossil fuels.

    The event culminated in a spectacular show of red, white and blue from the pilots of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. 

    It is a privilege to be a member of the Red Arrows. To me, the Red Arrows are an icon of the United Kingdom – so knowing that you had a key role to play in them bringing joy and excitement to thousands of people as they fly over the Mall is something I am incredibly proud of. 

    As head of all engineering and logistics on the team, I am even more proud to lead the amazing and diverse team of over one hundred ‘Blues’ that not only make major flypasts happen, but work tirelessly for twelve months a year, every year, to deliver a colourful and dynamic aerobatic show.

    The aircraft of the Armed Forces have a long and proud history of taking part in this occasion, with the first King’s Birthday Flypast taking place in 1913 and most recently formed part of Their Majesties’ Coronation in 2023 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. 

    The flypast has much poignancy for one of the Chinook pilots, Master Aircrew (MACr) Ruffles. The King’s Birthday Flypast was one of MACr Ruffles’ last flights as he leaves the RAF after forty years’ service and nine thousand hours flying with helicopters.

    Being part of the King’s Birthday Flypast after forty years of service especially on the 80th anniversary of VE Day is an honour I’ll carry with me for many years to come. It’s been a test of resilience, teamwork and dedication. But through it all, the bond with my fellow crew members, the sense of purpose and the pride in serving at such a high level has made every moment worthwhile.”

    The King’s Birthday Flypast concluded Trooping the Colour which took place on Horse Guards Parade, a ceremony dating back to the reign of King Charles II, becoming an annual event in 1760. Over 1,400 officers and soldiers form the parade, together with two hundred horses; over four hundred musicians from ten bands and Corps of Drums marched and played in unison.

    Edinburgh’s Lord Provost has congratulated all those named in the King’s Birthday Honours list, including former Council employee Frank Donoghue.

    Frank received the British Empire Medal in recognition of his services to the public, following 44 years working in the Council.

    He was leading the facilities team at the City Chambers when he retired in September, and played a role in Operation Unicorn after the Queen’s Death in 2022.

    Congratulations to all those who have been recognised in this year’s King’s Honours, whose achievements and service to the public have made such an impact.

    Our very own Frank Donoghue is a most deserved recipient. He demonstrated nothing but hard work and dedication to the city during his 44 years in service. From his original role in the then Lothian Regional Council to his retirement last year he went the extra mile to help keep the Council running.

    His varied career has taken in roles in caretaking, support services and building management, and I know that one of his more recent positions, helping to deliver Operation Unicorn following the Queen’s passing, was one of his proudest moments.

    The chief executive of one of Britain’s most popular high-street bakeries, the founder of an iconic ceramics brand, and the head of the UK’s largest professional body for recruiters are included in the King’s Birthday Honours today.

    Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie has been made a CBE for her services to hospitality, while the head of leading high-street brand Pets at Home has been awarded an OBE for services to retail. 

    Neil Carberry, the chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, has received an OBE for his services to the economy and to business, while Craig Beaumont has received an OBE for his work on the Federation of Small Businesses.

    Capitalising on Scottish innovation, ideas and expertise.

    New initiatives taking advantage of Scotland’s world-class reputation as an innovation nation have been announced by the Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes.

    Three projects, backed by £4.4 million, are designed to help turn ground-breaking research across the country’s universities and colleges into high-growth businesses that create jobs and support economic growth.

    The package includes:

    • £2.9 million for the Proof of Concept Fund which will explore the commercial potential of research projects by developing prototypes and pitching to investors, as well as analysing markets to attract further investment 
    • £800,000 for the Spinout Pipeline Project which, led by the University of Strathclyde, will help share commercialisation expertise across Scottish universities, culminating in a summit where innovators will pitch to potential investors
    • £700,000 for the Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint which will help college students to develop business skills and link in with investors

    A further £141,000, spent over two years, will support a new course at the University of Aberdeen to train 40 high school computing teachers, better preparing future generations for careers in tech-based businesses.

    Scaling businesses account for the majority of net job creation in the UK and their annual turnover is around £1.2 trillion, highlighting the opportunity afforded to Scotland’s economy by investing in the drive to turn research findings into high-growth start-ups.

    This includes Neuranics, a 2021 joint spinout from University of Edinburgh and Glasgow, which has developed state-of-the-art sensors used across a variety of sectors, including in healthcare and gaming, and has raised $8 million to accelerate its growth. The company is also backed by an £800,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise. 

    Another, Microplate Dx, is a multiple award-winning spinout from Strathclyde, developing novel solutions to the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.

  • MIL-OSI United Kingdom: Sunderland’s Former Senior Coroner awarded OBE in King’s Birthday Honours

    Sunderland’s former Senior Coroner Derek Winter has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

    He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for public service after serving for 21 years as Senior Coroner for Sunderland.

    Mr Winter also served as a Deputy Chief Coroner of England and Wales from 2019 for five years until his retirement from both positions in 2024.

    As Senior Sunderland Coroner, Mr Winter oversaw thousands of investigations into violent, sudden or suspicious deaths, during his time in the role.

    Welcoming the honour, Mr Winter, said: “I am delighted with such an award not just for myself but for my family, my team and the City.”

    Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, Patrick Melia, said: “I’m delighted to hear that Derek Winter has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

    “As Senior Coroner for Sunderland, Derek provided an exemplary service to the city and the people of Sunderland during his 21 years in the role.

    “He was also instrumental in developing state-of-the-art facilities and technology, with the needs of families attending inquests very much at their heart, at the new HM Coroner’s Courts in Sunderland City Hall.

    Mr Winter who qualified as a solicitor in 1983 began his career by specialising in family law, before sitting as a Deputy District Judge from 1994 to1999.

    Over 70 people from Wales who have contributed to their community and country are celebrated in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List 2025.

    1215 recipients in total have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a particular focus this year on those who have given their time to public service. 

    This year’s recipients include dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people.

    Recipients from Wales make up 6% of the total number of recipients receiving honours this year.

    Notable recipients across Wales include: 

    Oliver Sykes, who receives an MBE for services to Access to the Arts for Underprivileged Young People. His work leading the Stories for Care programme has empowered over 5000 young people from low income backgrounds, and given them access to literary works not normally available to them.

    Muriel Morgan, who receives an MBE for services to the community in Wrexham. At the age of 88 years old she has only recently retired from her 50 year career in the Royal Voluntary Service. During her time in RVS she coordinated volunteer drivers to take elderly and vulnerable people to medical appointments they might not otherwise be able to make. She worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure the service was maintained and that even in one of the most challenging times for the service, their service users were still able to attend critical medical appointments.

    Modupeola Obilanade is awarded an MBE for services to the community in Newport. Her work leading the St Pauls Clinic has transformed the clinic into a beacon of hope in the community, during her time running the clinic, she has launched multiple community health initiatives focusing on preventative care and chronic pain management. In her spare time she continues to work for charities, providing free medical consultations and health advice to those most in need.

  • MIL-OSI China: Liverpool agrees possible UK record fee for Florian Wirtz

    Liverpool has agreed a fee of 100 million pounds (136 million US dollars) for Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz, which could become a British record fee as the deal also includes a further 16 million pounds in possible add-ons.

    If the conditions, which are dependent on Liverpool winning titles during Wirtz’s time at the club, are met, that would make him more expensive that Chelsea midfielder, Moises Caicedo, who could cost a total of 115 million pounds from Brighton, while Chelsea also paid Benfica 107 million for Enzo Fernandez.

    Liverpool has held off competition to sign Wirtz, with Manchester City’s initial interest cooling at the high-cost of the deal and Wirtz reportedly preferring to move to England than sign for Bayern Munich.

    22-year-old Wirtz still has to agree personal terms and pass the club medical, but neither are expected to be a problem and the move is expected to be completed next week,

    He will move to the Premier League after scoring 57 goals in 197 appearances and seven times in 31 games for Germany.

    Last season he scored 10 goals and gave 12 assists in 31 league appearances, as Bayer finished second in the Bundesliga, while he netted six times in nine Champions League matches.

    Wirtz will be the second player to swap Bayer for Liverpool this summer after right back Jeremie Frimpong moved to Anfield for 34 million pounds to replace Trent Alexander Arnold after Alexander Arnold’s move to Real Madrid.

    Liverpool is also thought to be interested in Bournemouth left back Milos Kerkez as the club looks to strengthen the squad that won last season’s Premier League title. Enditem

    Derby City Council is delighted to announce that Andy Smith, Strategic Director for People Services, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours list.

    The honour has been awarded in recognition of Andy’s services to disadvantaged and vulnerable children. A qualified social worker, Andy joined Derby City Council in 2014 as the Director for Early Help and Children’s Safeguarding, following nearly two decades of dedicated service in various roles in Leicester.

    Andy’s profound dedication to social work was rooted in his personal journey. As a former child in care who was adopted by his foster carers just before his 11th birthday, Andy knew he wanted to be a social worker from an early age and has always tried to use his previous lived and positive experiences of the care system and of social workers throughout his career. His unique perspective and unwavering commitment have made him an invaluable asset to Derby City Council and the people of Derby.

    Today Congressman Chris Pappas, a small business owner, and Congresswoman Kelly Morrison, a member of the House Small Business Committee, introduced the Small Business Liberation Act in the House. This legislation, which was introduced in the Senate last month, would exempt the more than 34 million U.S. small businesses from President Trump’s catastrophically high tariffs enacted on April 2, 2025, which are effectively a national sales tax. Highlighting the urgent need for this legislation, Pappas and Morrison held a press conference with small businesses from across the country, including Mark Carpenter, founder of New Hampshire small business GenTent.

    Small businesses across the country have been raising the alarm that the Trump administration’s chaotic, costly, and unpredictable tariff war will put them out of business in a matter of weeks or months if nothing is done. New Hampshire exports accounted for 7% of the state’s gross domestic product in 2023, the highest percentage of exports of any New England state, meaning that New Hampshire businesses are more vulnerable to retaliatory tariffs. 

    Earlier this week Congressman Pappas met with GenTent owner Mark Carpenter at his small business of just 12 employees to hear about the impact of tariffs on his business. It’s estimated that because of tariffs the cost of a new part his business is producing will go up by 30%, costing the company another $100,000 just in tariffs.

    Background:  

    Pappas has loudly and strongly opposed President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on New Hampshire’s #1 trading partner, Canada, and U.S. allies. In April, Pappas joined colleagues to highlight the negative impact President Trump’s widespread tariffs will have on New Hampshire’s small business community and how they will raise costs for Granite Staters, calling on the administration to reverse course. Pappas has signed two discharge petitions to force a vote on legislation to overturn the Administration’s harmful tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the U.S.’s two biggest trading partners. He is also a cosponsor of the Prevent Tariffs Abuse Act, which amends the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to explicitly state that the authority granted to the President under the Act does not include the authority to impose duties, tariffs, or quotas on imports to the US.

    British Ambassador Presents Credentials to President Castro

    The British Ambassador to Honduras, Juliana Correa, presented her Credentials to the President of the Republic of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, during a ceremony held at the Presidential Residence in Tegucigalpa.

    Ambassador Correa was received by President Castro and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Javier Bu Soto. During the meeting, the Ambassador reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding political and economic partnership between the UK and Honduras. 

    In her remarks, Ambassador Correa welcomed the deepening of bilateral trade through the UK-Central America Association Agreement and highlighted the UK’s ongoing support for biodiversity conservation and sustainable community development in ecologically rich regions such as La Moskitia. 

    She also underscored the shared values that underpin the UK-Honduras relationship, including the promotion of democratic governance, the protection of human rights, media freedom, and inclusive development. Ambassador Correa expressed her enthusiasm for further enhancing cooperation in these areas. 

    Ambassador Juliana Correa was appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Guatemala and non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Honduras in April 2024. She took up her post in the region in October 2024.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: 20th anniversary of disappearance of Steven Williams

    Today marks the 20th anniversary of the disappearance of Steven Williams, a former president of the Gypsy Jokers.

    Steven Williams was last seen at the Gepps Cross Hotel on the afternoon of 14 June, 2005.  His white Ford Falcon was later found abandoned in the hotel car park.

    It is suspected Steven Williams was murdered.  His body has never been found, and his disappearance was declared a Major Crime.

    In late 2005, a call was made to Crime Stoppers which led police to searching a trucking company at Gillman.

    It is believed that Mr Williams, a debt collector, was dropped at Gillman by an associate – most likely to collect money from someone who worked there.

    It is likely his body was removed from the business in the rear of a white utility – covered by a tarpaulin – seen parked in a street adjacent to the property later the same day.

    Despite extensive searches over the years, no trace of him has ever been found.

    Steven Williams was 38 when he went missing, leaving behind a young daughter.

    Major Crime detectives believe this case is solvable; and that there are people who know exactly what happened to Steven Williams.

    Detective Sergeant Paul Ward, Major Crime Investigation Branch, said, “Despite the code of silence in outlaw motorcycle gangs, we have received information over the past 20 years regarding the circumstances of Steve’s disappearance, as well as potential burial sites.

    “Over the last 20 years, friendships and loyalties may have changed.  People are 20 years older, they may now have children of their own.  I ask them to put themselves in Blayze Williams’ position, growing up not knowing what happened to her father.

    “For the sake of the Steven Williams’ family, if you have information, please contact Crime Stoppers and help find his remains and bring him home to his family.”

    A $200,000 reward is still on offer for information that leads to a conviction, or the recovery of Steven Williams’ remains.

    Tech giants join government to kick off plans to boost British worker AI skills

    Leading tech firms have partnered with government to deliver AI skills training to 7.5 million UK workers.

    • Leading tech firms join talks with ambitions to train 7.5 million UK workers in essential AI skills.
    • Amazon, BT, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Sage among companies called together for discussions, as government-industry partnership agree programme of work.
    • Boosting AI skills for a fifth of UK workers is poised to unlock further growth and high-paid jobs, accelerating delivery of the government’s Plan for Change. 

    A fifth of the UK workforce will be supported with the AI skills they need to thrive in their jobs, breaking down barriers to opportunity and unlocking economic growth.

    That’s the message Technology Secretary Peter Kyle delivered this week (Friday 13 June) as he brought together leading tech firms for a first round of focused talks. 

    Peter Kyle met the likes of Amazon, Barclays, BT, Google, IBM, Intuit, Microsoft, Sage, and Salesforce, as a new government-industry partnership unveiled by the Prime Minister during London Tech Week formally kicked off its work.

    The talks focused on how industry and government can work together to deliver on this joint ambition, including identifying future skills needs and making training more accessible. During the meeting, the group worked towards agreeing terms of reference and a schedule of regular meetings helping to track its progress.  

    Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said: 

    Artificial Intelligence is the new economic frontier, and we want to get Brits ready for jobs of the future so we can spark the growth powering our Plan for Change.

    If we want to realise AI’s incredible potential though, we need to make sure people of all ages and from all parts of the UK have the skills they need for jobs both in and with the technology – especially given we expect around 10 million workers to be using AI in their day-to-day role by 2035. 

    Within days of announcing that we’re partnering with some of the world’s biggest tech leaders to help us do exactly that, we’re getting them around the table – representing a vote of confidence not only in Britain’s workers, but in the potential we offer as a global AI powerhouse.

    Companies who have signed up to this partnership will all bring a different area of expertise to its work. Microsoft have already committed to upskilling 1 million workers in AI by the end of the year, while firms including SAS and Sage will provide high-quality AI training resources for workers, boosting their confidence in using and adopting the technology. IBM are also set to tap into the power of its IBM SkillsBuild training programmes to roll out targeted training modules for workers, arming them with the tools they need to confidently adopt and use AI. 

    In the 12 months since the government took office, the UK has attracted more than £44 billion in AI investment, with 13,250 jobs being created since the Prime Minister launched the AI Opportunities Action Plan in January. 

    With a growing number of firms looking to Britain to support their AI ambitions, the collective focus of leading companies and Ministers will now work to equip people across the country with the skills they need to thrive in the age of AI.
