  • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Young Kim Bill to Support Small Business Passes Out of Committee

    Washington, DC – Today, the House Financial Services Committee passed the Improving Access to Small Business Information Act (H.R. 3351), a bipartisan bill led by Reps. Young Kim (CA-40) and Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) to cut burdensome regulations hurting small business owners.  

    The Improving Access to Small Business Information Act would 

     amend the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 to specify that actions—like conducting field surveys—of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation are not a collection of information under the Paper Reduction Act (PRA).

    Thank you, Chairman Hill and Ranking Member Waters, for holding this important markup.   

    I also want to thank my colleague and friend, Representative Gottheimer from New Jersey, for co-leading H.R. 3351 – the Improving Access to Small Business Information Act – with me.    

    My bill is simple. The legislation would specify that activities, like conducting field surveys, carried out by the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation, are not a collection of information under the Paper Reduction Act (PRA). Currently, OMB’s approval process is prolonged and bureaucratic, which delays feedback collection from small businesses and their investors.    

    I am proud to represent Orange County which is home to over 100,000 small businesses. It takes grit, perseverance, and commitment to start with an idea and make it a reality. As a former small business owner myself, I remember often wondering if the government truly understood the way that its policies impacted small businesses.  

    Former Director of the Office of the Advocate, Martha Miller, said that “the Office went through a yearlong process just to collect registration information for our annual forum and ask a few basic questions to understand the audience attending”. Our regulations are restricting the government from understanding the needs of small businesses.   

    The SEC’s Office of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation is the primary office charged with advancing the interests of small businesses and their investors. With the ever-changing economic and regulatory environment, the Office must be able to adapt quickly to the needs of small businesses and gather timely feedback to improve policy. H.R. 3351 reduces red tape and streamlines access to tools that the Office can utilize to gather more effective and timely data. The better information that the Office can gather, the better the SEC can respond, and the better off our small businesses will be.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congressman Nick Langworthy Announces Over $2.3 Million Grant for Head Start Projects in Cattaraugus County

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced that the County of Cattaraugus has been awarded $2,396,455 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Head Start Inc. Projects. 

    “I was proud to support and deliver over $2.3 million to the Cattaraugus County Project Head Start,” said Congressman Langworthy. “Head Start programming is a tremendous resource to working Cattaraugus County families and this funding will ensure children have the best opportunity to learn and be nurtured.     Head Start is based on the premise that all children share certain needs and that children of income eligible families can benefit from a comprehensive developmental program to meet those needs. The program maximizes the strengths and unique experiences of each child. The family, which is the principal influence on the child’s development, is a direct participant in the program.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene Reintroduces the Protect Children’s Innocence Act in the 119th Congress

    Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has reintroduced her landmark legislation, the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, a bold step to end the barbaric practice of so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors. This legislation, now designated as H.R. 3492, criminalizes genital mutilation, chemical castration, and all sex-change procedures performed on children.

    The Protect Children’s Innocence Act strengthens and codifies President Donald J. Trump’s executive order banning gender transition procedures for minors. Together, this legislation and the President’s action send a clear message: the federal government will no longer tolerate the abuse and exploitation of children by the radical gender ideology of the Left.

    “Left-wing activists and medical institutions are targeting America’s children with dangerous drugs, disfiguring surgeries, and permanent sterilization,” said Congresswoman Greene. “My bill stops the mutilation of kids and holds those responsible for performing or facilitating these barbaric procedures accountable.”

    The bill is scheduled to be marked up in the House Judiciary Committee at 10 AM tomorrow, a critical step toward bringing it to the House floor for a vote.

    When Congresswoman Greene first introduced this bill in 2022, she was joined by Chloe Cole, a courageous young woman who began “gender-affirming care” at age 13 and underwent a double mastectomy at 15. Chloe detransitioned at 16 and is now a vocal advocate for protecting vulnerable youth from irreversible harm. Watch Chloe’s powerful testimony here.

    What the Protect Children’s Innocence Act Does:

    • Criminalizes any attempt to perform or facilitate genital or bodily mutilation or chemical castration on a minor, with up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a significant fine.
    • Bans all puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone treatments for children.
    • Provides no exemption for mental health disorders as justification for these procedures.
    • Defines “chemical castration” and “genital or bodily mutilation” with detailed legal clarity.
    • Exempts children born with certain rare genetic conditions, or who are experiencing medical emergencies as certified by a physician.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Ciscomani Questions VA Secretary Doug Collins about the Need to Strengthen Veteran Suicide Prevention Efforts and Prioritize Survivor’s Assistance within the VA

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Juan Ciscomani, who represents nearly 80,000 veterans in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, questioned Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins during an oversight hearing about the VA’s preliminary requested budget. 

    During the hearing, Ciscomani urged Secretary Collins to provide greater clarity about the status of Arizona’s Be Connected Program which aims to address suicide rates among Arizona’s veteran population.  

    Created in 2017, the Be Connected program finds ways for the VA to better partner with local stakeholders to prevent veteran suicide by providing resources, care, career navigation advice, connection coaching, financial assistance and more. This public-private partnership has been nationally recognized for its exceptional cross-sector collaboration and partnership to address the complex issue of suicide prevention.  

    The need for Be Connected arose after a troubling spike in veteran suicide rates between 2015-2016 following a scandal at the Phoenix VA, which was 3-4 times higher than the general population and nearly double the national rate for veterans. In his time in Congress, Ciscomani has repeatedly met with local stakeholders, his Veteran Advisory Council, the veteran community at large, and VA Secretaries from both the Biden and Trump administrations to find ways to reduce suicide rates and support our veterans. In January 2025, Ciscomani sent a letter to the VA advocating for the continued support of this critical program. 
    The congressman also praised Secretary Collins for moving the Office of Survivors Assistance (OSA) back within the Office of the VA Secretary, which is exactly what Ciscomani’s legislation, the Prioritizing Veterans’ Survivors Act (H.R. 1228), did. This ensures that surviving families of veterans receive the benefits and support they were promised and provide them a direct line to the Secretary, so their needs and concerns are prioritized program-wide at the very top of the VA. This legislation previously passed the House of Representatives on April 9, 2025 with unanimous support.

    GOP’s Proposed Cuts to Medicaid Would Throw 206,000 Virginians Off Their Health Care

    RICHMOND, Va. — In case you missed it, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) on Thursday joined Protect Our Care Virginia to discuss the latest developments in the GOP assault on Medicaid. 

    On Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on which Rep. McClellan serves, completed a 26-hour markup in which Republicans advanced the largest cuts to Medicaid in history in order to meet President Donald Trump’s demands to fund tax breaks for the wealthy. Republicans on the committee approved $715 billion in cuts to health care, mostly to Medicaid, and imposed new reporting requirements that are designed to throw people off the program. 

    Republicans on the House Budget Committee failed to advance the overall package on Friday, citing that they want to see even deeper cuts to Medicaid in Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” 

    Using data from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis (TCI) estimated that 206,000 people will lose Medicaid in Virginia. Additionally, TCI found that 147,000 Virginians who have Medicaid would be subject to up to $35 copays for certain services. Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith (VA-09), who also sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has defended raising out-of-pocket health care costs on Virginians. 

    Due to cuts to Medicaid and a change in a rule to the Affordable Care Act, 8.6 million people will lose their health care under the plan the committee advanced. A total of 13.7 million people will become uninsured when factoring in those who will no longer be able to afford to buy insurance through the ACA marketplaces due to the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits. Republicans are refusing to extend the tax credits past 2025. 

    “Due to these changes, you lose your health insurance under Medicaid, you lose your subsidy to be able to purchase insurance through the Marketplace,” said Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan. “That’s how we get to 13.7 million people who will lose health insurance. Those costs will go to the rest of us. Providers will feel the stress of that. We will have rural hospitals threatening to close again, like we did before we expanded in Virginia. About 200,000 Virginians stand to lose access to their health care here. And why? Why are we doing this? To fund tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% by making the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent …This is taking away from the least of these to help those who don’t need the help. And that is a big part of the story that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle don’t want to talk about.”

    “When all the proposals under the House Republican health care plan are fully implemented, approximately 206,000 Virginians will lose their health coverage,” said Ashley Kenneth, President of The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis. “The people poised to lose their health care already struggle with the high cost of living in our state and cannot afford to pay more for their health care. They will choose to go without insurance because they will have no other choice.”

    “Let me be clear, this is a direct threat to the health care access of tens of thousands of Virginians,” said Jamie Lockhart, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia. “Nearly 25,000 people in Virginia relied on Planned Parenthood health centers last year for cancer screenings, STI treatment, birth control, and more. Medicaid is one of the primary ways those patients pay for care. If this proposal moves forward, they’re not just losing a provider. They’re losing the provider they trust.”

    “So I just want to tell Congress, don’t make it harder for people to get Medicaid, please don’t make it harder to stay on Medicaid, and please don’t question our work ethic, because that is insulting,” said Andrew Daughtry of Henrico County, who suffered multiple on-the-job injuries while working construction. “I couldn’t get health care through my job, but I need Medicaid to pay for the thousands of dollars of injuries that happened on the job. So please don’t pretend that people on Medicaid don’t want to work because I’ve given up my body and my health for the work.”

    “It is not rocket science to see that when people lose their health care, they’re going to start showing up in emergency rooms where hospitals are obligated to treat them. And if no one is reimbursing hospitals for that care, they will go into the red, and they will close,” said Jessica Lazerov, MD, MBA, a pediatrician from Fairfax. “And then everyone in that geographic area, regardless of whether they’re on Medicaid, is going to lose access to their closest hospital. And if these Republicans don’t understand that, then they’re simply not fit to govern.”

    “We love the work we do, and I want to be able to continue to do it for the rest of my life, but cuts in Medicaid may prevent us from doing so,” said SEIU Virginia 512 member Tony Hedgepeth of Richmond, a Medicaid-funded home care worker who cares for veterans.“Taking away Medicaid could sever 47,000 Virginia veterans from their health care or force them to pay more for it. These brave individuals have fought for our country, and we should fight to ensure that they can live and access the best possible quality of life, as they did for us.”

    “Medicaid provides health care to one in every five people in Virginia,” said Katie Baker, state director for Protect Our Care Virginia. “If you aren’t on Medicaid yourself, you know someone who is. Polling shows that the majority of voters believe we should be increasing funding for health care, not cutting it. Republicans are not with the public when it comes to taking away people’s health care.”

  • MIL-OSI USA: Mrvan Reintroduces Veterans’ Security and Pay Transparency Act

    Washington, DC – Rep. Frank J. Mrvan (D-IN-01) and Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA-02) recently reintroduced H.R.3359, the Veterans’ Security and Pay Transparency Act.

    The purpose of this legislation is to improve recruitment and retention of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Police Officers.  Specifically, the Veterans’ Security and Pay Transparency Act would require the VA Secretary to submit an annual report to Congress on salaries, recruitment bonuses, and other compensation of all VA Police Officers.  This information will be utilized to conduct Congressional oversight and determine how VA can improve recruitment and retention of police officers to protect veterans and VA personnel.

    WASHINGTON—Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs Chairman Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) delivered opening remarks at today’s hearing on “Mandates, Meddling, and Mismanagement: The IRA’s Threat to Energy and Medicine.” In his remarks, Subcommittee Chairman Burlison highlighted how the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) increased energy subsidies that cost taxpayers billions, funneled money into the Democrats’ radical energy agenda, and stifled free market competition that would have lowered energy prices. At today’s hearing, the panel will hear from experts on how the IRA failed to curb inflation and created corruption.

    Below are Subcommittee Chairman Burlison’s remarks as prepared for delivery.

    Today we are here to provide critical oversight of the policies and subsidies instituted through the Inflation Reduction Act, or the “IRA.”  

    Signed into law under the Biden Administration in 2022, this misleadingly-named legislation passed with zero Republican votes. 

    Three years later, the projected costs continue to balloon—with rounding errors in the billions—all while creating runaway subsidies and unnecessary distortions within energy and health care markets. 

    In January of this year, the Director of the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the IRA’s energy subsidies would increase U.S. budget deficits by $825 billion over the next ten years. 

    That is more than three times the initial ten-year estimate of roughly $270 billion rendered by CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation.  

    How did CBO and the JCT get these numbers so wrong? 

    Other estimates show an even grimmer picture of the IRA’s long-term economic impacts on the federal budget. 

    Recent analysis by the Cato Institute shows that energy subsidies included in the IRA may cost “between $936 billion and $1.97 trillion over the next ten years, and between $2.04 trillion and $4.67 trillion by 2050.” 

    These are chilling estimates that extend far beyond what was previously projected. 

    I would like to enter this report, entitled “The Budgetary Cost of the Inflation Reduction Act’s Energy Subsidies,” from the CATO institute into the hearing record so that others may review these findings. 

    Without objection, so ordered. 

    These subsidies didn’t just happen to create distortions in energy markets: they distorted markets by design. 

    The IRA funnels money to so-called “clean” energy organizations that would not be able to compete on their own without these subsidies.  

    The Biden Administration was blatantly picking winners and losers in the economy. 

    The federal government slammed a fist on the economic scale to stifle free market competition that allows for the most reliable, cost-effective sources to compete on an open playing field—all in the name of unproven, hyperbolic, and extreme climate alarmism.  

    The kicker? These IRA subsides, coming from the party that purports to be “against the oligarchy” and fighting the billionaires, created tax loopholes that carved out eleven thousand dollars, on average, for the top 1% through tax credits, while failing to demonstrate tax savings of more than $100 for the bottom quintile of American taxpayers.  

    The IRA paid out to the rich, all under the guise of climate change.  

    There are also implications for the future of our tax code and prescription drug costs. 

    The IRA has already led to a more convoluted web of tax subsidies, creating additional burdens for compliance. 

    For health care under the IRA, the Biden Administration’s “pill penalty” will ultimately increase drug costs and federal expenditures on Medicare. 

    We have an opportunity to take a hard look at these provisions to carefully evaluate whether these tax credits and programs are achieving their intended results, and whether taxpayer dollars would be better spent elsewhere. 

    Doing so has the potential to save taxpayers over $1 trillion dollars, ease inflation, stimulate economic growth by allowing for free market competition, and make energy affordable again.

    In response to the legislation being signed into law, Rep.     Background:

    In January 2025, Rep. Pfluger joined several colleagues in reintroducing the TAKE IT DOWN Act. This legislation protects victims of real and deepfake ‘revenge pornography’ by criminalizing the publication of these harmful images, in addition to requiring websites to remove them quickly. The rising popularity of AI requires decisive federal legal protections that will empower victims of these heinous crimes, most of whom are women and girls.

    Rep. Pfluger also spoke in support of the TAKE IT DOWN Act during a House Energy and Commerce Committee full committee legislative markup earlier this year.

    First Lady Melania Trump has strongly backed this bill, speaking in support of this legislation during a roundtable she hosted at the U.S. Capitol. President Trump also voiced his support for this legislation in his State of the Union address.   • MIL-OSI USA: Rep. Dan Goldman’s Statement on Donald Trump Lifting His Stop Work Order for Empire Wind 1

    On April 16, the Trump Administration announced a stop work order on the wind farm off the coast of New York that makes landfall in Congressman Goldman’s district that would power 500,000 homes in New York City upon completion. Since then, Congressman Goldman, joined by a coalition of elected officials and advocates, strenuously objected to the economic and national security harm that would have resulted from a permanent cancellation. Today, the Trump Administration lifted the stop work order, allowing Equinor to proceed with the project.

    Escondido – Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-48) has announced six outstanding students from California’s 48th Congressional District received appointments to the U.S. Service Academies.

    Issa said, “On behalf of our community, I congratulate these remarkable young students on their distinguished appointments.  I trust they will go on to serve this country with courage and commitment. We are all eager to see the illustrious leaders they will become.”

    Each year, members of the U.S. House and Senate nominate high school seniors from their community for admission to the U.S. Air Force, Merchant Marine, Military and Naval academies. Nominees were reviewed by a skilled panel of local community members.

    With the President’s signature, the TAKE IT DOWN law now becomes the strongest federal tool to date for combatting “revenge porn,” digital harassment, and image-based sexual abuse. This new law sends a clear message to both predators and platforms: online exploitation will no longer be tolerated, and accountability will be enforced at every level. It is a major win for families and parents across America who can finally feel more secure knowing their children are better protected in today’s digital world. 

    The law addresses the growing threat of deepfake technology, which allows perpetrators to create explicit, realistic images—usually of women and girls—without consent. Many victims don’t discover these images until after serious harm is done. By setting clear federal standards and requiring swift takedowns, the law closes a dangerous gap that left victims with little recourse.

    Rep. María Elvira Salazar led the charge in the House, reintroducing the bill in January 2025. First Lady Melania Trump played a pivotal role in elevating the issue, hosting a high-profile roundtable on Capitol Hill and mobilizing bipartisan support. The law was passed unanimously in the Senate in February 2025 and received final approval in the House soon after.

    The TAKE IT DOWN Act has earned support from over 120 organizations, including major tech companies like Meta, Snap, Google, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Amazon, as well as advocacy groups. 

    The TAKE IT DOWN Act addresses these issues while protecting lawful speech by:
     

    • Criminalizing the publication of Non-Consensual Intimate Image (NCII) or the threat to publish NCII in interstate commerce;
       
    • Protecting good faith efforts to assist victims by permitting the good faith disclosure of NCII for the purpose of law enforcement or medical treatment;
       
    • Requiring websites to take down NCII upon notice from the victims within 48 hours; and
       
    • Requiring that computer-generated NCII meet a ‘reasonable person’ test for appearing to realistically depict an individual, to conform to current First Amendment jurisprudence.

    A Legislative Milestone for Rep. Salazar

    The TAKE IT DOWN Act is the ninth piece of legislation sponsored by Rep. Salazar to be signed into law, further cementing her role as a national leader in the fight to safeguard Americans—especially women and minors—from digital abuse. Other key policies sponsored by Rep. Salazar that have been enacted into law include:

    • The Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust Congressional Gold Medal Act – Honors 60 diplomats who risked their lives during World War II to save Jews from Nazi persecution. Signed into law in December 2024.
       
    • The Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act – Protects migratory birds and their habitat, critical for the Everglades. Signed into law in April 2024.
       
    • The RECLAIM Taxpayer Funds Act – Recovers billions in fraudulent government loans and restores fiscal responsibility and government accountability. Implemented by the Biden Administration in December 2023.
       
    • The REEF Act – Incentivizes retired Navy ships to be sunk and used as artificial reefs in marine ecosystems across America. Signed into law in December 2023.
       
    • The Summer Barrow Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Act – Reauthorizes critical funding for programs that address mental health and substance abuse issues. Signed into law in December 2022.
       
    • The PRICE Act – Makes it easier for small businesses to get federal contracts. Signed into law in February 2022.

    Washington, D.C. ─ Today, Representatives Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) and Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ) reintroduced the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Physicist Pay Cap Relief Act.

    Therapeutic Medical Physicists (TMPs) and Diagnostic Medical Physicists (DMPs) assist radiation oncologists in delivering high-quality cancer care and treatment for veterans enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system. This bill lifts the arbitrary pay cap imposed on VA TMPs and DMPs that harm veterans’ access to care and exacerbate clinical staffing shortages at VA medical facilities. 

    Over the past fifteen years, TMP and DMP salaries have increased nationwide as radiation therapy has become more sophisticated and more common. However, VA TMPs and DMPs earn approximately $40,000 less than their private sector counterparts ― forcing the VA to overspend on contracted TMP/DMP services, which could be done more reliably in-house and at a much lower cost.

    “Our veterans and wounded warriors deserve the highest quality cancer care available,” said Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL). Unfortunately, too many VA facilities lack the necessary staff needed to deliver for our veterans. This common-sense, bipartisan legislation corrects a long-standing gap that has prevented veterans from receiving the first-rate oncology treatment they have earned fighting for us on the battlefield.”

    Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

    I rise today in strong support of my bill, H.R. 1815 –  the VA Home Loan Program Reform Act.

    This legislation establishes a permanent partial claims program within the VA Home Loan Program —bringing VA in line with other federal agencies that lend money for homes.

    As Chairman of the House Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, I am responsible for the two most successful programs in the history of the United States government – the home loan program and the GI VA home loan guarantee.

    It is my responsibility to make sure every active duty servicemember, every veteran, and every American who chooses to join the military in the future has the opportunity to use this program to fulfill the American Dream of homeownership.

    However, when a series of unelected bureaucrats invented a program that had not existed since someone first lent seashells to buy a cave, they greatly endangered that.

    I am grateful to the Trump administration for standing up to stop this.

    There was a $25,000 problem in the Veterans Affairs Administration, they threw a $320,000 fixer at it, and that had the potential to collapse this program over time.

    I will not allow that on my watch.

    I want to thank Chairman Bost, Secretary Collins, and President Trump for helping ensure that every American that has served, is serving, and will serve has the ability to own a home.

  • MIL-OSI USA: House Passes Rep. Young Kim Bill to Support Military Sexual Trauma Victims

    Washington, DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed the Improving VA Training for Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Claims Act (H.R. 2201), a bipartisan bill led by U.S. Reps. Young Kim (CA-40), Nikki Budzinski (IL-13), Don Bacon (NE-02), and Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06). 

    According to VA officials, the department received 57,400 MST claims in fiscal year 2024, up 18% from the previous year, and approved more than 63% of them, up from roughly 40% more than a decade ago.  

    The Improving VA Training for Military Sexual Trauma Claims Act:  

    • Requires the VA Secretary to create a plan to improve training for Contracted Disability Compensation Examiners (CDCEs) who assist veterans dealing with MST;  
    • Ensures annual training for all employees of the Veterans Benefits Administration;  
    • Improves quality assurance of CDCEs so MST veterans are not retraumatized during the medical disability examination process; and,  
    • Requires the VA to automatically obtain all service and personnel medical records for PTSD-based claims filed for in-service personal assault.  

    “MST survivors have already faced unthinkable treatment and pain. The VA examination process shouldn’t cause more stress,” said Rep. Young Kim. “This bipartisan bill provides much-needed updates to VA training and ensures survivors receive the certainty, compassion, and care they deserve. I thank my colleagues for coming together in a bipartisan manner to pass this commonsense bill out of the House, and I’ll keep fighting to get this over the finish line.”

    Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) is leading a formal letter to Speaker Mike Johnson requesting an invitation for Pope Leo XIV to address a Joint Session of Congress.

    The letter comes just days after Congresswoman Miller-Meeks joined a historic congressional delegation to the Vatican for the (inaugural) Mass of Pope Leo XIV—the first American pope—alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and nearly 20 members of Congress.

    “Pope Leo XIV represents a profound moment in both American and world history,” said Miller-Meeks. “His life, leadership, and message of faith are already uniting people across the globe. Whether you’re Catholic or not, his message is one of human dignity, responsibility, and truth. It would be an incredible honor for Congress and the American people to hear directly from him. At a time when the world is searching for moral clarity and renewed purpose, Congress should welcome that message.”

    If accepted, Pope Leo XIV would become only the second pontiff in history to address a Joint Session of Congress.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Kweisi Mfume (D-MD-07) and Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) are introducing the Henrietta Lacks Congressional Gold Medal Act, in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. This legislation would posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal to Henrietta Lacks in recognition of her immortal “HeLa cells” which have made invaluable contributions to global health, scientific research, our quality of life, and patients’ rights. Since the American Revolution, Congress has commissioned gold medals as its highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.

    The bill receives support from Members of the Maryland Congressional Delegation, including Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) and Representatives Steny Hoyer (D-MD-05), Jamie Raskin (D-MD-08), Glenn Ivey (D-MD-04), April McClain Delaney (D-MD-06), Sarah Elfreth (D-MD-03), and Johnny Olszewski (D-MD-02). These lawmakers makeup 27 Members of the U.S. House who have signed on as original cosponsors. The legislation is also endorsed by HELA100: Henrietta Lacks Initiative and the Henrietta Lacks Legacy Group (HLLG).

Her ‘HeLa cells’ have altered the future of medical science, and the world continues to benefit from Mrs. Lacks’ contributions and sacrifice,” said Congressman Kweisi Mfume. “During a time in our country where the Trump administration shamefully seeks to erase Black history from the American story, the legacies of Black historymakers like Mrs. Lacks must be uplifted, and we must continue to deliver our message back to President Trump: you erase it, we will replace it,” he concluded.

    “Without knowing it at the time of her cancer treatment, Henrietta Lacks would go on to change the course of modern medicine. Her cells unlocked a breakthrough in medical research, leading to treatments and cures that are bettering people’s lives to this day. But Mrs. Lacks never consented to the use of her cells – nor did she receive rightful credit for the monumental contributions she made. That’s why it’s all the more important that we recognize her with the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest expression of appreciation,” said Senator Chris Van Hollen.

    In 1951, it was discovered that Mrs. Henrietta Lacks, of Baltimore, had a large, malignant tumor on her cervix. However, unbeknownst to Mrs. Lacks or her family, medical researchers took samples of her tumor during her treatment without her consent. Henrietta Lacks’ cells, now known as ‘‘HeLa cells,” doubled every 20 to 24 hours whereas other human cells died in the same time period.

    Lacks’ prolific cells continue to replicate to this day and contribute to remarkable advances in medicine resulting in several Nobel Prize award-winning discoveries and groundbreaking advancements. These scientific discoveries include the development of the polio vaccine and drugs used to treat cancer, HIV/AIDS, hemophilia, leukemia, and Parkinson’s disease. Her cells were even sent into space to survey long-term effects on living cells and tissues.

    The Life of Henrietta Lacks

    • Henrietta Lacks was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1920 and later moved to Baltimore, Maryland with her husband and family of 5 children.
       
    • At the age of 31, she sought treatment from The Johns Hopkins Hospital for prolonged bleeding.
       
    • At the time, the hospital was one of a few that would treat African Americans. Shortly after her admission to the hospital, she was diagnosed with an aggressive cervical cancer that would lead to her untimely death only 8 months later.
       
    • This tragedy left Henrietta Lacks’ husband and 5 children to go on without her.
       
    • Despite Mrs. Lacks’ passing, her life continued under unique circumstances. Researchers took cells from Henrietta Lacks without her consent or the consent of her relatives and discovered that they were unlike any other known cells before.
       
    • Mrs. Lacks’ cells, now referred to as, “HeLa cells,” were remarkably durable and prolific, which allowed them to be used extensively in scientific research.
       
    • The cells had the unparalleled capacity to reproduce and were deemed immortal; meaning, where other human cells would die, “HeLa cells” doubled every 20 to 24 hours.
       
    • Henrietta Lacks’ immortal cells have been used by researchers, resulting in several Nobel Prize award-winning discoveries and groundbreaking advancements.
       
    • These scientific discoveries include the development of the polio vaccine and drugs used to treat cancer, HIV/AIDS, hemophilia, leukemia, and Parkinson’s disease. Her cells were even sent into space to survey long-term effects on living cells and tissues.
       
    • Henrietta Lacks’ story garnered the attention of the nation and was chronicled in a Primetime Emmy Award-nominated HBO film entitled, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”   
       
    • In October of 2024, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine broke ground on the Henrietta Lacks Building.
       
      • The new 34,000-square-foot building will be located on the East Baltimore campus and support multiple programs of the Berman Institute, Johns Hopkins University and the School of Medicine, and will house flexible program and classroom space for educational, research, and community use purposes.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) spoke on the U.S. House floor to honor the service of the nation’s law enforcement officials. To celebrate National Police Week, Rep. Mann joined his Republican colleagues in passing multiple bills, including the LEOSA Reform Act, the BELO’s Act, and H.Con.Res.30. Rep. Mann also participated in a vigil for fallen police officers in the U.S. Capitol.

    Mr. Speaker, this week the nation has come together to celebrate National Police Week—a time to honor the brave men and women who wear the badge and put their lives on the line every single day to protect our families and communities.

    In the Big First and across the country, law enforcement officers run toward danger when the rest of us run away. They wake up every day with a calling to uphold the rule of law, serve their neighbors, and keep their communities safe.   • MIL-OSI USA: Van Orden Introduces Bill to Streamline CNA Training Requirements

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) introduced legislation to address the nationwide shortage of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) by expanding the number of qualified supervisors for CNA training programs. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Workforce Improvement Act will allow Registered Nurses (RN) with a minimum of two years of nursing experience to supervise CNA training, regardless of whether their experience comes from working in a long-term care facility or another healthcare facility.

    CNA staff shortages are a growing concern across the country, especially in rural communities with limited access to healthcare facilities and providers. By eliminating the long-term care requirement, more nurses will be available to supervise the training of CNAs, ultimately accelerating workforce recruitment and helping alleviate the CNA shortage.

    “I have heard from countless healthcare providers who are in desperate need of more CNAs,” said Rep. Van Orden. “In rural Wisconsin, folks depend on these critical workers to receive timely and quality care, and when facilities are short-staffed, entire communities feel the impact. This bill removes the bureaucratic red tape and gets more boots on the ground to ensure patients are receiving the care they need.”

This legislation is a step toward building the CNA workforce to aid better patient care and to train future health care professionals. We’re grateful Rep.     “Nearly 40 years ago, Congress passed a federal ban on the sale of machine guns, recognizing that the risk these weapons of war pose to our communities is unacceptably high. Last Friday, the Trump administration effectively lifted that ban and legalized machine guns across the United States.  

    “By allowing the sale and civilian use of Forced Trigger Resets (FTR), Donald Trump has given any gun-owner the ability to turn their AR-15 into a fully automatic weapon capable of firing 400 rounds a minute.  

    “Machine guns are designed for free-fire military combat zones, not for streets, schools, and communities across America. Unleashing them on our communities will supercharge an already devastating gun violence crisis.  

    “Approximately 125 Americans will be killed by guns today, and 12 of them will be children. It is every elected official’s duty to work to reduce that number and keep their communities safe, not further endanger the American people out of fealty to gun manufacturers seeking to drive up profits at the public’s expense.  

    “I call on so-called moderate Republicans to finally put commonsense gun safety legislation on the floor. Do not sit idly by while your president endangers the American people you swore an oath to protect.”
