  • MIL-OSI China: Unicorns, gazelles, little giants: Tech startups thrive in ‘fund jungle’

    In a high-stakes race to pursue next-generation technologies, Chinese startups specializing in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and advanced manufacturing are gaining momentum through a novel but supportive financing model called the “fund jungle.”

    This ecosystem — a dense network of government-led investment funds, venture capital and corporate backing — is accelerating the rise of so-called “gazelle” firms, unicorns and niche “little giant” enterprises across east China’s Anhui Province and beyond.

    Leading the way is HiDream.ai, which rose to the forefront of global generative AI startups in just two years. With its cinematic-quality video generation technology, the fast-growing firm has attracted 10 million individual users and 40,000 corporate clients worldwide.

    Founder Mei Tao said that starting an AI company was like “venturing into an uncharted territory” where both the technology and the market are entirely new.

    Amid shifting international dynamics that led to a withdrawal of U.S. capital and a relative shortage of RMB venture funding, the company adopted a “move fast with small steps” strategy by demonstrating its value with limited capital to attract follow-up investment.

    The turnaround came last year, when it secured a sizable Series A round, with state-owned Hefei Industry Investment Group being the lead investor, joined by the Anhui artificial intelligence fund of funds and other institutional investors.

    Beyond financing, establishing base in Hefei, provincial capital of Anhui, has helped the company expand its applications in broadcasting, film and television, and tourism, while the local government is aiming to leverage the AI technologies to empower local industries.

    HiDream.ai had good reason to choose Hefei as its base. Anhui Province has set out plans to cultivate a cohort of rapidly growing gazelle companies and a new wave of unicorns, startups valued at over 1 billion U.S. dollars. The province has also pledged support for local “little giant” enterprises, which are specialized small and medium-sized firms that excel in niche markets, drive innovation, tackle frontier technologies, and help strengthen industrial chains.

    To empower these “fantastic beast” companies, Anhui has built a “fund jungle” led by state investors and joined by social capital. The cluster of funds aims to ensure sufficient funding for a tech company at all stages of its growth.

    As of last October, a total of 124 funds with nearly 50 billion yuan (about 7 billion U.S. dollars) in committed capital had been set up in the fund complex, investing in more than 400 projects. The province is home to 2,191 private funds, including 50 angel funds, 734 venture capital funds and 1,407 industrial investment funds.

    “Different industries and different stages of growth have distinct capital needs. A ‘fund jungle’ offers specialized funds for each phase, thus forming a comprehensive matrix that nurtures an industry across its entire lifecycle,” said Tang Zhiqiang, deputy dean of Anhui institute of industry and information technology.

    “This lush ecosystem of funds fuels companies’ growth through tailored financial empowerment,” he added.

    Funds, patience and ecosystem 

    Cowa Robot, based in the city of Wuhu in Anhui, is one of the beneficiaries of this funding ecosystem. The unicorn company’s self-driving vehicles, such as street-cleaning robots, have started operation in more than 50 Chinese cities.

    Lu Wenjun, the company’s vice general manager, said the Wuhu government has deep expertise in robotics and provides clear development pathways along with strong supportive policies. From establishing initial industry frameworks to continuously building the ecosystem, many firms have reaped the benefits.

    “Autonomous driving thrives on high-quality data to refine algorithms, and that data comes from real-world scenarios. Local governments provided critical support, from pilot programs to scaled deployment,” he added.

    Home to automaker Chery and 96 little giant firms, Wuhu is known for patiently nurturing emerging industries. In 2024, the share of R&D expenditures in Wuhu’s GDP reached 4.28 percent, far exceeding the nationwide average of 2.68 percent.

    The city has also set up a fund of 3 billion yuan to spur tech innovation and to solicit participation of social capital.

    Wanzhi District in the city has created a fund jungle totaling 11.1 billion yuan, which has invested in 58 projects and attracted an additional 3.57 billion yuan in non-local capital.

    Here, an industrial park consisting of nearly 200 general aviation companies, from propeller making to pilot training, has taken shape, poised to capitalize on the country’s trillion-yuan low-altitude economy boom.

    The industry can be traced back to 2013, when CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacture Co., Ltd. was founded here. The company is now a little giant firm that produces both manned aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), after 12 years of continuous investment in R&D and government support.

    General manager Tian Manlin stressed that low-altitude manufacturing is the core of the low-altitude economy, requiring relentless R&D and industry collaboration.

    A strong focus on R&D is a shared conviction among entrepreneurs in Anhui’s emerging industries. “R&D must never stop,” emphasized Mei Tao, adding that HiDream.ai continually integrates user feedback to refine its models daily.

    “AI demands top talent and heavy funding. A healthy financial ecosystem fuels innovation, helping more tech pioneers break through,” Mei said.

    State Highway 1 is blocked at Hukerenui following a serious crash involving two vehicles this evening.

    Emergency services were called to the scene, between Akerama and Rusk roads, about 7.45pm.

    Initial indications suggest two people have serious-to-critical injuries, and another has minor injuries.

    The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and diversions are in place.

    Northbound traffic will be diverted along Crows Nest Road while southbound traffic will be diverted along Paiaka Road.

    Motorists are advised to expect delays.

    According to officials, over 21,000 Yatris had darshan inside the holy cave shrine on Saturday. On Sunday morning, another group of 7,208 pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu in two escorted convoys bound for the Kashmir Valley.

    “The first convoy is heading to the Baltal base camp in North Kashmir, while the second is en route to the Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp in South Kashmir,” officials said.

    The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), which oversees the annual pilgrimage, noted that in addition to the pilgrims arriving at the Jammu base camp, many devotees are reporting directly to the Baltal and Nunwan base camps for on-spot registration.

    Meanwhile, 36 pilgrims sustained minor injuries on Saturday when five vehicles in a Valley-bound convoy collided near Chandrakote in Jammu’s Ramban district.

    In the wake of the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, security for this year’s Yatra has been significantly ramped up.

    An additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed to augment the presence of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB, and local police. All transit camps along the route and the entire stretch from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar to the cave shrine are under tight security cover.

    Locals have extended full cooperation to the Amarnath Yatra, as they have consistently done in the past. In a heartwarming gesture that sent a strong message against terrorism, residents of Kashmir welcomed the first batch of Yatris with garlands and placards at Qazigund, near the Navyug Tunnel, as they entered the Valley.

    This year’s Amarnath Yatra began on July 3 and will conclude after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and the Raksha Bandhan festival.

  • MIL-OSI China: Anhui backs high-tech growth with push into smart mobility, space tech

    China’s government work report this year highlighted intelligent connected new energy vehicles and emerging industries, including commercial aerospace and the low-altitude economy, as key areas for rapid development.

    In eastern China, Anhui province is focusing on building up these new quality productive forces, aiming to promote the successful completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) through high-quality economic growth.

    Smart EV industry gains momentum

    Anhui has taken proactive steps to grow its smart electric vehicle industry as the automotive sector shifts toward electrification and new technology.

    In April, the province issued trial guidelines for the management of road testing and demonstration applications of intelligent connected vehicles. Last year, Hefei, the provincial capital, was named one of China’s first pilot cities for vehicle-road-cloud integration.

    A standout example is the Maextro Super Factory, a smart manufacturing plant in Hefei jointly developed by Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group and Huawei. The facility integrates digital research and development with green, low-carbon manufacturing. 

    The Maextro S800 flagship sedan debuted on May 30, with more than 500 ultra-luxury vehicles pre-ordered within 19 days, helping to fill a gap in China’s domestic high-end car market.

    Wei Dawei, director of the Maextro Super Factory, said the S800 features the industry’s first independently developed intelligent digital chassis platform, enabling predictive control for bumpy roads and curves. It also uses Huawei’s ADS 4 intelligent assisted driving system, which the company says cuts end-to-end latency by 50% and boosts traffic efficiency by 20%.

    Expanding the low-altitude economy

    Hefei is also moving quickly to grow its low-altitude economy. In June 2024, city officials rolled out a policy package to support the sector, offering up to 20 million yuan ($2.79 million) in annual funding and up to 100 million yuan in total for newly established low-altitude economy research institutions.

    Today, more than 300 companies in Hefei are working in the low-altitude sector, building a complete industrial chain for drone R&D, testing, production and operations. The city has built China’s first urban air mobility hub and launched more than 200 drone flight routes, providing services such as medical supply delivery, rail inspection and food delivery.

    Hefei-based Hey Airlines became the first company in China to receive an operation certificate for autonomous passenger drones from the Civil Aviation Administration of China on March 28, marking the start of the country’s first nationwide passenger drone service.

    To ensure safety, Hey Airlines’ pilotless EH216-S electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is equipped with backup systems for all key flight components. Each unit is fitted with its own security key and strong data encryption to prevent unauthorized access. The flight control system has a fail-safe feature that monitors the aircraft’s health in real time and can trigger an emergency landing if needed.

    Peng Sixuan, marketing director at Hey Airlines, said the company currently offers sightseeing services but plans to expand with options such as aerial weddings and hotel transfers, aiming to make air taxis a reality.

    He said a cargo version of the eVTOL, which can carry up to 250 kilograms, is well suited for delivering supplies to remote or mountainous areas. The company also has a firefighting model designed for rapid response to high-rise urban fires.

    Commercial space industry takes off

    Anhui is also moving into the commercial space industry, with Bengbu city emerging as a key hub. Bengbu has signed agreements with 16 commercial space companies, with total planned investment reaching 5.52 billion yuan. The city is home to three major enterprises and two nationally recognized high-tech firms in the sector.

    The China Bengbu Commercial Aerospace Industrial Park, Anhui’s first dedicated platform for the commercial space industry, opened on May 10.

    The 0.43-square-kilometer park includes a center for space technology innovation, four production bases for rocket engines, satellite manufacturing, reusable spacecraft assembly and new material production, as well as multiple platforms for industry integration and applications. The project aims to build a major commercial aerospace manufacturing hub in the Yangtze River Delta region.

    One of the companies operating in the new park is Lingkong Technology Co. Ltd. which provides design services for rockets and high-speed aircraft.

    “Our company is focused on cultivating new quality productive forces. In 2024, our output value reached 45 million yuan, and we expect that figure to double this year,” said Yang Wei, general manager of Lingkong Technology. “Our new plant in the industrial park has been completed and will be ready for move-in after final inspections and interior work.”

    Bengbu has established a comprehensive funding system to support commercial space companies at every stage of development, from seed and early growth to maturity. The total value of the fund cluster is expected to exceed 40 billion yuan this year.

    Vladivostok, July 6 (Xinhua) — The Progress MS-31 cargo ship, which was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on July 3, has docked with the International Space Station, the Russian state corporation Roscosmos reported on Sunday.

    “Today at 00:25 Moscow time, the Progress MS-31 cargo ship automatically docked with the Poisk small research module of the Russian segment of the International Space Station,” the statement said.

    Progress MS-31 delivered 2,625 kg of cargo to the ISS, including 1,205 kg of dry cargo for the crew of the 73rd long-term expedition, 950 kg of fuel for refueling the station, 420 kg of drinking water for the cosmonauts, and 50 kg of nitrogen to replenish the ISS atmosphere. The ship also brought equipment for scientific experiments to the station.

  • MIL-OSI Australia: Man arrested after CBD carjacking

    A man has been arrested after stealing a car in Adelaide this morning.

    About 8.15am Sunday 6 July, police responded to South Terrace following reports that a Toyota ute had been stolen. It is alleged the victim had stepped out of his vehicle to make a delivery when an unknown man entered the driver’s seat. The victim approached the suspect who pushed him away and drove off towards Hutt Street.

    The victim, who was not injured, provided police with GPS tracking information for the ute which showed it travelling towards the southern suburbs. Multiple patrols deployed to the area and PolAir launched to assist in the search.

    The police helicopter spotted and began tracking the car on Main South Road as it continued south. The Toyota stopped on Field Street at McLaren Vale where the driver exited the vehicle, allowing patrols to quickly move in and arrest the suspect.

    Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene to examine the car which was then returned to the owner.

    A 37-year-old man of no fixed place was charged with aggravated robbery and illegal use of a motor vehicle. He was refused police bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court tomorrow (Monday 7 July).

    Around 12:30am, a man, aged in his 50’s, was crossing Mitchell Street near the intersection of Nuttall Place when he was struck by a blue Toyota Hilux dual cab utility.

    The impact tossed the male into the air, causing him to land on a nearby stationary car before hitting the road.

    The Hilux failed to stop at the scene and continued down Mitchell Street, running a red light at the corner of Mitchell and Daly Streets, before exiting the CBD via Daly and the Stuart Highway. 

    Multiple witnesses rendered assistance to the victim.

    The driver of the vehicle that the pedestrian was thrown into stopped at the scene and waited for police. 

    Emergency Services attended and treated the male at the scene before taking him to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment of his injuries. He currently remains in a stable condition.

    Police are working to identify the driver of the vehicle and are urging them to make themselves known to police.

    Workshop explores inclusive risk communication, media resilience, and the future of journalism education

    From 23 to 27 June 2025, media professionals came together for a workshop on disaster preparedness and response, co-organized by the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD), UNDRR, and UNESCO. The five-day event aimed to build media capacity to inform, engage, and protect the public in the face of increasing climate-related disasters.

    The training, supported by the CREWS Initiative South-West Indian Ocean project, formed part of the broader Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative and drew on UNESCO’s Model Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan for Media Institutions. Sessions focused on everything from developing business continuity strategies to ensuring inclusive and accurate disaster coverage during disasters.

    “For me, this workshop has been an eye-opener,” said Marie-Claude d’Unienville of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). “We need to think about the risks we have in our own working environment.”

    The workshop also placed a strong emphasis on leadership and institutional planning by engaging directly with media managers. Veronica Maria, Managing Director of Today in Seychelles, reflected on the value of this approach:

    “I learned how to do a risk assessment plan, how to monitor the plan every six to twelve months-that will be a good guide for business continuity.”

    Participants had the opportunity to examine disaster scenarios from multiple perspectives and to simulate newsroom decision-making under crisis conditions. This practical lens encouraged reflection on both external hazards-like road closures and internet outages-and internal risks that could disrupt media operations.

    A dedicated session on disability inclusion in disaster communication struck a particular chord. Christine Winslow, a disability rights advocate with Ramp Up Rise Up, emphasized the urgency of placing accessibility at the center of preparedness efforts:

    “[Persons with disabilities] do get forgotten and ignored and are most times an afterthought-especially when it comes to implementing and providing accessibility.”

    Her remarks were met with strong support from participants, many of whom acknowledged that the needs of persons with disabilities are too often overlooked in emergency communication.

    The DRMD reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media sector. “Not only do we want to empower media to educate our public but also to protect themselves. They have to be mindful of their own personal safety when reporting onsite in crisis time”, said Jade Landry.

    The workshop also brought in a forward-looking educational component. Mr. Samuel Mundua, Senior Lecturer of Journalism at the University of Seychelles, attended as part of efforts to develop the country’s first formally accredited journalism programme. “The content and local case studies from this workshop will inform our new curriculum, especially around environmental and disaster risk topics,” he shared.

    As small island developing states like Seychelles face mounting climate threats, this workshop marks a significant step in building stronger bridges between media, government, and academia to ensure that risk communication in Seychelles is inclusive, evidence-based, and resilient.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the tragic loss of lives in the devastating floods that struck the US state of Texas.

    In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the disaster.

    “Deeply saddened to learn about loss of lives, especially children in the devastating floods in Texas. Our condolences to the US Government and the bereaved families,” the Prime Minister said in his post.

    The catastrophic flooding, triggered by a powerful storm that dumped nearly a foot of rain before dawn on Friday, has claimed at least 32 lives, including nine children.

    Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj struck thrice with the new ball as India tightened their grip on the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Edgbaston, leaving England at 72/3 at stumps on the fourth day on Saturday.

    England have been set a daunting target of 608 after India declared their second innings at 427/6, with skipper Shubman Gill leading from the front with a majestic 161, following his masterly 269 in the first innings. He was well supported by K.L. Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, who hit half-centuries each.

    Continuing their new-ball onslaught from England’s first innings, Akash and Siraj again dismantled the top order. With Harry Brook and Ollie Pope unbeaten on 15 and 24 respectively, England still need 536 runs to win on Day Five, while India require seven wickets to secure what would be a memorable series-levelling victory — provided rain stays away.

    Ben Duckett began England’s chase positively, slicing and flicking Siraj for boundaries, but the bowler struck back by tempting Zak Crawley into a drive that flew straight to backward point, where substitute fielder B. Sai Sudharsan took a sharp catch to dismiss him for a seven-ball duck.

    After India burnt a review on Duckett for a caught-behind appeal, the opener hit a flurry of boundaries before inside-edging Akash onto his stumps for 25. Akash then produced a beauty to dismiss Joe Root for six, angling the ball from wide of the crease and nipping it past the bat to hit the top of off-stump. Pope and Brook managed to steady the innings slightly, hitting a couple of boundaries each before stumps brought an end to another dominant day for India.

    Earlier, Gill once again showcased his elegant strokeplay, hitting 13 fours and eight sixes for his eighth Test hundred — his fifth against England and his third in just four innings as India’s Test captain. With an aggregate of 430 runs, Gill is now the second-highest run-scorer in a single Test match after England’s Graham Gooch (456) and the first player ever to score both a double century and a 150-plus in the same Test.

    The final session began with Jadeja signalling a change in gears by smashing Shoaib Bashir for a straight six off the very first ball he faced. Gill continued his onslaught, hammering Chris Woakes for a six and two fours, before he and Jadeja took a boundary each off Bashir. Jadeja then cut Root for four through backward point to bring up his second half-century of the match off 94 balls.

    After Jadeja swept Root for four, Gill slog-swept the same bowler for back-to-back sixes, then cleared mid-off for another boundary. Gill reached 150 with a perfectly executed slog-sweep off Root before Pope lost sight of a top-edge, giving Gill yet another four.

    Gill then swung Bashir over midwicket for six, but his attempt at another maximum resulted in a mistimed shot back to the bowler, who completed the catch. Gill departed to a standing ovation for his superb 161. After Nitish Kumar Reddy holed out to long-off against Root, Washington Sundar struck the part-timer for a four and a six before Gill declared the innings, giving his bowlers another crack at a tiring England batting line-up.     British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Lebanon and reiterated the UK’s ongoing support for Lebanon’s security, stability and future prosperity.

    As part of a regional visit, Foreign Secretary David Lammy visits Lebanon on Friday 4 July 2025. He reiterated the UK’s ongoing support for Lebanon’s security, stability and future prosperity. 

    The Foreign Secretary met with President General Joseph Aoun at the Presidential Palace. Discussions focused on the latest local and regional developments and UK-Lebanon bilateral relations.

    The Foreign Secretary spoke about the urgency of efforts to reach a lasting peace in Lebanon and the region. He stressed the importance of Lebanon and Israel implementing the ceasefire agreement in full, including the withdrawal of Israeli Forces and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) throughout the South.

    He commended the long-standing and strong bilateral partnership between Lebanon and the UK including with the LAF, both in the South and on the border with Syria. Since 2009, the UK has spent over £115 million to support the LAF with infrastructure, vehicles, training and equipment and since 2013 supported the establishment of the Land Border Regiments (LBRs) on the border with Syria.

    The Foreign Secretary also reiterated the UK’s support for UNIFIL and the role they play for stability in South Lebanon, as mandated in UNSCR 1701.  He called for urgent implementation of essential economic reforms and transparent processes for justice and accountability. 

    British Ambassador Hamish Cowell said:

    I was pleased to welcome British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Lebanon, following unprecedented regional tensions. 

    Efforts must continue to secure a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon and allow the full deployment of the Lebanese Army to the south of the country, as the sole legitimate defender of Lebanon. 

    Stability in the Middle East is in everyone’s interest. The full implementation of UNSCR 1701 is crucial to Lebanon and the region’s future security.

    Lebanon’s path to recovery is dependent on essential reforms, including those required to secure an IMF agreement to rebuild the economy and unlock international investment.  

    The UK remains a steadfast partner to Lebanon and its people.

    The Foreign Secretary also visited Syria as part of his regional trip. This is the first by a UK Minister in 14 years and renews the UK-Syria diplomatic relationship. The Foreign Secretary met President Al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani to reiterate the importance of an inclusive and representative political transition in Syria and offer continued UK support to the Syrian people.

    overnor Kathy Hochul and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that in its first six months, New York City’s congestion pricing program has succeeded in reducing traffic and raising revenues to fund transit improvements across the region, while economic activity in New York City has flourished. Activated at 12:00 am on January 5th, the nation’s first urban congestion pricing program reduces gridlock in Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ) below 60th Street by charging motorists to enter the zone. Revenue from congestion pricing is on track to reach the forecasted $500 million in 2025, allowing the MTA to advance $15 billion in critical capital improvements to mass transit on its subway, bus, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad systems.

    “Six months in, it’s clear: congestion pricing has been a huge success, making life in New York better,” Governor Hochul said. “In New York, we dare to do big things, and this program represents just that – traffic is down throughout the region, business is booming, transit ridership is up, and we are making historic upgrades to our transit system. We’ve also fended off five months of unlawful attempts from the federal government to unwind this successful program and will keep fighting – and winning – in the courts. The cameras are staying on.”

    New York State and the MTA have successfully fought off repeated legal challenges to congestion pricing and have stood up to block the unlawful attempts of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Trump Administration to terminate the program. In May, a preliminary injunction was issued in the case of Metropolitan Transportation Authority v. Duffy, keeping congestion pricing in effect pending further court proceedings and enjoining the federal government from taking retaliatory measures in response.

    MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said, “Congestion relief is a massive success and validation of the initiative keeps pouring in. The program is achieving all of its goals in terms of traffic reduction, increased travel speeds, safety, noise reduction and more. And not only is Congestion Relief delivering all the projected benefits – and more – it’s also proving that New York State government can effectively execute major, ambitious initiatives that improve the quality of life in ways New Yorkers notice and appreciate.”

    MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer said, “In addition to all of the benefits New Yorkers are already feeling on our streets, Congestion Relief is delivering accessibility at 25 subway and railroad stations, modern subway signals for AC and BDFM riders, new subway and rail cars, and countless other essential projects for our public transit system. The new MTA is hard at work advancing these projects better, faster, and cheaper.”

    Since the congestion pricing program took effect on Jan. 5, it has delivered a wide array of benefits according to data from the MTA and other reports and studies from business groups and other data sources.

    Congestion pricing is reducing traffic and improving quality of life

    In just six months, congestion pricing has succeeded in reducing traffic, speeding up the flow of traffic, and reducing delays – not just in the Congestion Relief Zone but throughout the region. The number of vehicles entering the zone is down by 11% since congestion pricing started. Every day, 67,000 fewer vehicles enter the zone, and since the program started, more than 10 million fewer vehicles have entered the zone compared to last year.

    According to a report from the Regional Plan Association and Waze, traffic delays are down in the Congestion Relief Zone by 25% and across the metropolitan region by 9%. Delays are also down by 10% in the Bronx and 14% in parts of Bergen County, NJ. Time lost to traffic jams is down 12%, giving seven minutes for every hour spent in traffic in 2024 back to commuters’ lives. Travel times on river crossings have decreased by 6% to as much as 42% in 2025 compared to 2024. In the Holland Tunnel, rush hour delays are down by 65% since congestion pricing began. In the Lincoln Tunnel, MTA express buses are traveling almost 24% faster than in 2024. Roads and highways approaching the Congestion Relief Zone, including Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn and the Long Island Expressway, are also moving faster than last year.

    Reduced gridlock has improved quality of life in New York City. Crashes in the Congestion Relief Zone are down 14%. Traffic injuries are down by 15% in the zone, and the safety benefits are being felt citywide. Just this week, the New York City Department of Transportation released data showing that pedestrian fatalities on New York City streets are at historic lows, matching levels last seen in 2018.

    Additionally, air quality has improved and noise pollution has reduced since the program was launched. Honking and vehicle noise complaints to 311 are down by 45% in 2025. A new report from the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released on July 2 showed steady or decreasing levels of fine particle air pollution (or PM2.5) at most sites, both inside and outside the Congestion Relief Zone.

    Transit service and ridership are on the rise

    Transit ridership across all modes has increased from January-May 2025 when compared to the same period last year. All MTA modes of public transportation have had post-pandemic record high ridership in the first half of 2025.

    • Access-A-Ride: +21%

    Transit service has steadily improved in 2025 to near record levels. In May, subway On-Time Performance was 85.2%, the best non-pandemic month in recorded history. Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North On-Time Performance have consistently been at or near 97% and 98% respectively in 2025. Buses are moving faster thanks to congestion pricing. Bus speeds have increased by an average of 3.2% within the CRZ, with some routes increasing by as much as 25%.

    Governor Hochul and the MTA have also made historic investments to improve bus service. Service was increased on eight key Express Bus routes in March and on 14 high-ridership local bus routes on June 29th. The MTA also launched the first phase of the Queens Bus Network Redesign on June 29th, bringing more frequent and direct service with better connections to 800,000 Queens bus riders. Phase 2 will launch on August 31.

    Economic activity in New York City is up

    Gridlock is bad for the economy. According to a report from the Partnership for New York City before congestion pricing was launched, businesses and individuals were wasting hundreds of hours sitting in traffic, costing the economy $20 billion per year. Congestion pricing is a locally developed solution to a generational challenge. 

    Already, the benefits of congestion pricing are improving New York City’s economy. Commuters are saving as much as 21 minutes each way. Time savings help businesses make deliveries and save costs. The annual value of these time savings could be as high as $1.3 billion. In May, business district pedestrian activity within the Congestion Relief Zone increased by 8.4% compared to May 2024. This growth is much faster than for business districts outside of the zone, which saw an increase of 2.7%.

    Business is booming in the Congestion Relief Zone in 2025. Broadway just posted its biggest season ever with $1.9 billion in ticket sales; retail sales are on track to be up $900 million in 2025 compared to 2024; Hotel occupancy was 87% in April 2025 compared to 85% in April 2024; Commercial office leasing in 2025 Q1 is up 11% compared to 2024 Q4 and up 80% since 2024 Q1. At the same time, New York City now has the most jobs in its history – nearing 4.86 million in April 2025. That represents 1.6% growth over April 2024, outpacing the national average of 1.1%.

    The MTA is investing in transit improvements funded by congestion pricing

    By enabling the MTA to issue $15 billion in bonds to fund projects in its 2020-2024 Capital Plan, congestion pricing is powering improvements across the MTA network. Improvement projects funded by congestion pricing include:

    • 435 additional R211 subway cars – including 80 additional open-gangway cars
    • 44 new, more reliable dual-mode locomotives for the Long Island Rail Road
    • 300 new M9A cars for Metro-North and the Long Island Rail-Road
    • Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signal upgrades on the A and C lines between Downtown Brooklyn and Ozone Park, allowing for more frequent and reliable service
    • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades at 23 subway stations, including new elevators, reconstructed platforms, and other improvements

    Additionally, funding from congestion pricing allows the MTA to move forward with the tunneling contract for Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway, which will be awarded in the second half of 2025.

    By enabling the MTA to issue $15 billion in bonds to fund projects in its 2020-2024 Capital Plan, congestion pricing is powering improvements across the MTA network. Improvement projects funded by congestion pricing include:

    • 435 additional R211 subway cars – including 80 additional open-gangway cars
    • 44 new, more reliable dual-mode locomotives for the Long Island Rail Road
    • 300 new M9A cars for Metro-North and the Long Island Rail-Road
    • Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signal upgrades on the A and C lines between Downtown Brooklyn and Ozone Park, allowing for more frequent and reliable service
    • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades at 23 subway stations, including new elevators, reconstructed platforms, and other improvements

    Additionally, funding from congestion pricing allows the MTA to move forward with the tunneling contract for Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway, which will be awarded in the second half of 2025.

  • MIL-OSI Analysis: Why Texas Hill Country, where a devastating flood killed dozens, is one of the deadliest places in the US for flash flooding

    Texas Hill Country is known for its landscapes, with shallow rivers winding among hills and through rugged valleys. But that geography also makes it one of the deadliest places in the U.S. for flash flooding.

    In the early hours of July 4, 2025, a rush of flood water swept through an area dotted with summer camps and small towns about 70 miles west of San Antonio. At least 27 people died, and about two dozen girls from one camp and other people in the area were still unaccounted for the following morning, officials said. More than 200 people had to be rescued.

    The flooding began as many flash floods in this region do, with a heavy downpour that sent water sheeting off the hillsides into creeks. The creeks poured into the Guadalupe River. Around 3 a.m. on July 4, National Weather Service data shows the river was rising about 1 foot every 5 minutes near the camp. By 4:30 a.m., the water had risen more than 20 feet.

    Flood expert Hatim Sharif, a hydrologist and civil engineer at the University of Texas at San Antonio, explains what makes this part of the country, known as Flash Flood Alley, so dangerous.

    What makes Hill Country so prone to flooding?

    Texas as a whole leads the nation in flood deaths, and by a wide margin. A colleague and I analyzed data from 1959 to 2019 and found 1,069 people had died in flooding in Texas over those six decades. The next highest total was in Louisiana, with 693.

    Many of those flood deaths have been in Hill County, an area known as Flash Flood Alley. It’s a crescent of land that curves from near Dallas down to San Antonio and then westward.

    The hills are steep, and the water moves quickly when it floods. This is a semi-arid area with soils that don’t soak up much water, so the water sheets off quickly and the shallow creeks can rise fast.

    When those creeks converge on a river, they can create a wall of water that wipes out homes and washes away cars and, unfortunately, anyone in its path.

    Hill Country has seen some devastating flash floods. In 1987, heavy rain in western Kerr County quickly flooded the Guadalupe River, triggering a flash flood similar to the one in 2025. Ten teenagers being evacuated from a camp died in the rushing water.

    San Antonio, considered the gateway to Hill Country, was hit with another flash flood on June 12, 2025, that killed 13 people whose cars were swept away when they drove into high water from a flooding creek near an interstate ramp in the early morning.

    Why does the region get such strong downpours?

    One reason Hill Country gets powerful downpours is the Balcones Escarpment.

    The escarpment is a line of cliffs and steep hills created by a geologic fault. When warm air from the Gulf rushes up the escarpment, it condenses and can dump a lot of moisture. That water flows down the hills quickly, from many different directions, filling streams and rivers below.

    As temperature rise, the warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, increasing the downpour and flood risk.

    The same effect can contribute to flash flooding in San Antonio, where the large amount of paved land and lack of updated drainage to control runoff adds to the risk.

    What can be done to improve flash flood safety?

    First, it’s important for people to understand why flash flooding happens and just how fast the water can rise and flow. In many arid areas, dry or shallow creeks can quickly fill up with fast-moving water and become deadly. So people should be aware of the risks and pay attention to the weather.

    Improving flood forecasting, with more detailed models of the physics and water velocity at different locations, can also help.

    Probabilistic forecasting, for example, can provide a range of rainfall scenarios, enabling authorities to prepare for worst-case scenarios. A scientific framework linking rainfall forecasts to the local impacts, such as streamflow, flood depth and water velocity, could also help decision-makers implement timely evacuations or road closures.

    Education is particularly essential for drivers. One to two feet of moving water can wash away a car. People may think their trucks and SUVs can go through anything, but fast-moving water can flip a truck and carry it away.

    Officials can also do more to barricade roads when the flood risk is high to prevent people from driving into harm’s way. We found that 58% of the flood deaths in Texas over the past six decades involved vehicles.

    The storm on June 12 in San Antonio was an example. It was early morning, and drivers has poor visibility. Cars drove into floodwater without seeing the risk until it was too late.

  • MIL-OSI United Nations: WFP delivers food inside Gaza amid restrictions and growing insecurity

    GAZA, Palestine – The UN World Food Programme (WFP) continues to deliver life-saving food assistance inside Gaza despite deteriorating security, limited access, and growing desperation of communities in need of food assistance. A recent WFP assessment shows nearly one person in three is not eating for days, placing more people at risk of starvation. More than 700,000 people have been forced to relocate since March 18 as an estimated 85 percent of Gaza is now considered an active militarized zone.

    Here are the latest updates on food insecurity and WFP operations in Gaza, including quotes from WFP Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Carl Skau, who is currently in Palestine:

    WFP Operations inside Gaza

    •    Since 21 May, when border crossings re-opened to limited amounts of aid, WFP teams have been able to dispatch dozens of aid convoys with more than 1,200 trucks carrying 18,247 metric tons (MT) of food aid inside Gaza. Despite these efforts, the food delivered to date is still a tiny fraction of what a population of over two million people need to survive.
    •    The breakdown of the food aid brought into Gaza includes (as of 03 July):
    o    12,275 MT of wheat flour for bread
    o    5,828 MT of ready to eat rations
    o    113 MT of emergency nutritional supplies
    o    30 MT of yeast for baking
    •    While most trucks carrying food assistance into Gaza have been intercepted by hungry civilian communities, WFP has been able to conduct some direct distributions. These include:
    o    Food aid distributed directly to 24,649 people (5,357 households).
    o    Nutrition prevention assistance to 102,544 children under five and pregnant and breastfeeding women across 92 active distribution sites.
    o    Nutritional supplements to 11,125 people.
    o    In June, 250,000 meals were also provided through 72 community kitchens with the help of food security partners.
    •    Israeli authorities have provided written assurances that operating conditions inside Gaza will improve, and that more trucks will be able to carry food aid into Gaza.
    •    The assurances also include the use of more routes and border crossing points with faster clearances, dependable communications, and without armed forces near convoys. 
    •    In agreement with Israeli authorities, WFP’s target is to bring 2,000 MT of food aid into Gaza every day (1,000 MT to the north, 1,000 MT to the south).
    •    WFP stands ready to scale up food assistance into Gaza if a ceasefire comes into effect. We have experienced teams on the ground, and proven systems in place to respond at scale.
    •    During the recent ceasefire, WFP facilitated nearly 40 percent of all humanitarian aid that entered Gaza, including 8,000 trucks of food, which helped push back the tide of hunger. The agency stands ready to do this again.
    •    WFP has over 140,000 metric tons of food in or on its way to the region – enough to feed the entire population of 2.1 million people for two months.

    Food Needs Inside Gaza
    •    Inside Gaza, the fear of starvation and desperate need for food remains high.
    •    A recent WFP assessment found nearly one person in three is not eating for days at a time.
    •    Findings from the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, show a high risk that famine will occur as conflict persists and humanitarian agencies are unable to provide essential aid. 
    •    Some 470,000 people are expected to face Catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5) between May and September of this year.
    •    Malnutrition is surging and some 90,000 children and women urgently need treatment.
    •    Food aid is the only real way for people to eat:
    o    Flour for bread is 3,000 times more expensive than before the war – 23 euros per kilo of flour. And cooking fuel is simply nowhere to be found.

    Requirements to Scale Operations
    •    WFP stands ready to scale up and deliver life-saving assistance directly to the most vulnerable families in need. For this, WFP urgently calls for:
    •    At least 100 aid trucks per day to be allowed through northern, central and southern border points.
    •    Faster loading and dispatching of trucks from crossing points into Gaza. 
    •    No armed presence near convoy routes or civilian aid distribution points.
    •    Uninterrupted connectivity to allow humanitarian organizations to coordinate effectively.
    •    A sustained ceasefire that creates the necessary conditions for safe, scaled, and impactful humanitarian aid.

    •    “A ceasefire is urgently needed. We stand ready to deliver – we have the food, the capacity and the systems to assist the entire population in Gaza. During the previous ceasefire, we showed what was possible: delivering over 8,000 trucks of food in only 42 days. We can do it again, but we need all routes and entry points to open, and we need safety and order to be able to reach most vulnerable. The ceasefire must also be the first step toward lasting peace.”

  • MIL-OSI Security: Mexican National Charged After Killing of Attempted Carjacking Victim in Tucson, Arizona

    TUCSON, Ariz. – Julio Cesar Aguirre, 42, of Mexico, was charged by criminal complaint on July 2, for Attempted Carjacking, Use and Discharge of a Firearm During and In Relation to a Crime of Violence, and Alien in Possession of a Firearm. Aguirre had his initial appearance in federal court in Tucson today.

    According to the complaint, Aguirre shot and killed a male driver with a 9mm caliber handgun, while attempting to carjack the victim’s Toyota Tundra on the morning of June 30, in Tucson, Arizona.

    Tucson Police Department (TPD) officers who were called to the scene spoke with witnesses before being directed to a nearby residence for a potential burglary. When they arrived at the home, the residents explained that a Hispanic male with a bleeding arm, matching Aguirre’s description, had entered their backyard and threatened them with a gun, demanding they turn over their vehicle to him. The individual later fled.

    Shortly thereafter, TPD officers located Aguirre, who was hiding in a nearby storage shed. Officers also found a Smith & Wesson 9mm caliber pistol within Aguirre’s reach. Aguirre was taken into custody without further incident.

    A search of Aguirre’s record revealed that he is a Mexican citizen, illegally present in the United States. Aguirre was arrested over 10 times from 2007 to 2013 for immigration-related crimes and was last removed from the country in 2013 pursuant to a court order.

    The federal prosecution of this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).

    TPD and the FBI Phoenix Division’s Tucson office are conducting the investigation in this case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Tucson, is handling the prosecution on the federal charges. TPD and the Pima County Attorney’s Office will have an ongoing and parallel investigation into additional felony state charges, including homicide.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Labor Day Weekend Triple Murder in 2021 Yields Guilty Verdict for Six People

                WASHINGTON – U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced that Erwin Dubose, Kamar Queen, Damonta Thompson, William Johnson Lee, and Mussay Rezene, all of Washington, D.C., and Toyia Johnson, of Rockville, MD, were found guilty today in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on all charges for the September 4, 2021 Labor Day weekend murders of 31-year-old Donetta Dyson, 24 year-old Keenan Braxton, and 37-year-old Johnny Joyner in front of 633 Longfellow Street, NW.

                On July 3, 2025, a jury found Dubose, Queen, Johnson Lee and Thompson guilty of charges including conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, three counts of first-degree murder while armed with aggravating circumstances, and three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.  The jury found defendant Johnson guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to assault with intent to kill while armed. The jury found defendant Rezene guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to first degree murder while armed.

                “This senseless violence will not be tolerated in this city,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. “These thugs put innocent bystanders in harm’s way, proving their total inhumanity. Today’s verdict upholds the DC U.S. Attorney’s Office’s efforts to stop these horrific crimes and we look forward to taking these criminals out of society for a significant amount of time.”

                According to the government’s evidence, at approximately 7:33 p.m., on September 4, 2021, Thompson drove Dubose, Queen and Johnson Lee, to the 600 block of Longfellow Street, NW. Those three men got out of the vehicle, crept to the corner of Longfellow and 7th Streets, NW, and began indiscriminately shooting into a neighborhood gathering. The three shooters ran back to the waiting vehicle Thompson was driving and fled the scene. The three victims, Ms. Dyson, Mr. Braxton and Mr. Joyner, were killed and another three victims sustained non-lethal gunshot wounds from the shooting.

                Shortly after the homicide, an associate of Dubose, Toyia Johnson, who rented the vehicle Thompson was driving at the time of the incident, began placing multiple 911 calls in which she falsely reported the suspect vehicle stolen. Shortly after midnight on September 6, 2021, Dubose and Rezene drove to the 4500 block of Eads Street, NE and set fire to the vehicle. The evidence established that triple homicide was in retaliation for a shooting that occurred an hour prior in the 800 block of Oglethorpe Street, NE.

                Joining the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

                In announcing the verdict, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. Finally, they acknowledged the work of Assistant United States Attorneys Colleen Kukowski and Charles R. Jones, who prosecuted the case.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Labor Day Weekend Triple Murder in 2021 Yields Guilty Verdict for Six People

                WASHINGTON – U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced that Erwin Dubose, Kamar Queen, Damonta Thompson, William Johnson Lee, and Mussay Rezene, all of Washington, D.C., and Toyia Johnson, of Rockville, MD, were found guilty today in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on all charges for the September 4, 2021 Labor Day weekend murders of 31-year-old Donetta Dyson, 24 year-old Keenan Braxton, and 37-year-old Johnny Joyner in front of 633 Longfellow Street, NW.

                On July 3, 2025, a jury found Dubose, Queen, Johnson Lee and Thompson guilty of charges including conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, three counts of first-degree murder while armed with aggravating circumstances, and three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.  The jury found defendant Johnson guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to assault with intent to kill while armed. The jury found defendant Rezene guilty of tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory after the fact to first degree murder while armed.

                “This senseless violence will not be tolerated in this city,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. “These thugs put innocent bystanders in harm’s way, proving their total inhumanity. Today’s verdict upholds the DC U.S. Attorney’s Office’s efforts to stop these horrific crimes and we look forward to taking these criminals out of society for a significant amount of time.”

                According to the government’s evidence, at approximately 7:33 p.m., on September 4, 2021, Thompson drove Dubose, Queen and Johnson Lee, to the 600 block of Longfellow Street, NW. Those three men got out of the vehicle, crept to the corner of Longfellow and 7th Streets, NW, and began indiscriminately shooting into a neighborhood gathering. The three shooters ran back to the waiting vehicle Thompson was driving and fled the scene. The three victims, Ms. Dyson, Mr. Braxton and Mr. Joyner, were killed and another three victims sustained non-lethal gunshot wounds from the shooting.

                Shortly after the homicide, an associate of Dubose, Toyia Johnson, who rented the vehicle Thompson was driving at the time of the incident, began placing multiple 911 calls in which she falsely reported the suspect vehicle stolen. Shortly after midnight on September 6, 2021, Dubose and Rezene drove to the 4500 block of Eads Street, NE and set fire to the vehicle. The evidence established that triple homicide was in retaliation for a shooting that occurred an hour prior in the 800 block of Oglethorpe Street, NE.

                Joining the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

                In announcing the verdict, U.S. Attorney Pirro and Chief Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. Finally, they acknowledged the work of Assistant United States Attorneys Colleen Kukowski and Charles R. Jones, who prosecuted the case.

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – All eyes are on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as the city prepares to welcome Heads of State and delegations from across the world for the 17th BRICS Summit.

    The Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) nations will converge in the metro for high-level engagements at the Summit taking place on 6 and 7 July 2025.

    Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The new members were invited to join during the Johannesburg BRICS Summit, held in South Africa, in August 2023.

    BRICS brings together major emerging economies, collectively representing around 49.5% of the global population, around 40% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and around 26% of global trade.

    In preparing for the upcoming event, Rio has heightened security measures. On Friday afternoon, military personnel were deployed at strategic venues and sites, including hotels and museums.

    Trucks delivering furniture and vehicles transporting international delegates were also seen entering and exiting the summit venue.

    South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, while Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to participate virtually.

    Representing the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, will lead the UAE delegation on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

    Brazil assumed the BRICS Chairship on 1 January 2025 with the theme: “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for more Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”.

    Brazil’s Presidency will focus on two priorities, including Global South Cooperation and the BRICS Partnerships for Social, and Economic and Environmental Development.

    The flagship priorities of the Brazilian Chairship include global health cooperation; trade, investment, and finance; climate change; Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance; promoting global reform of the multilateral peace system and security architecture; and institutional development.

    The key objectives of BRICS include strengthening economic, political, and social cooperation among its members, as well as increasing the influence of Global South countries in international governance.

    Among its ambitions are reforms to global institutions such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), with a focus on improving legitimacy, equity, and operational efficiency.

    Emergency services are assisting the victim of a serious crash in the Avon Road area, Pokeno.

    Police were called to the scene about 6pm.

    Initial indications suggest a person has fallen from a vehicle and has been seriously injured. It’s believed the incident occurred on SH2, between Pokeno and Mangatawhiri.

    Road closures are in place, and Police ask motorists to avoid the area.

  • PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for Sambhal accident victims’ kin

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the tragic road accident in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday in which eight people of a marriage party, including the groom, were killed. The PM announced financial assistance for the families of those killed in the mishap and for the injured.

    A post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X, stated: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM.”

    The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening in the Junawai Police Station area of Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh.

    A Bolero vehicle being driven at high-speed lost control and rammed into the wall of Janata Inter College in Junawai village. The impact was so severe that the vehicle overturned, killing five people on the spot, including the groom.

    Following the accident, five critically injured passengers were referred to Aligarh for treatment. However, three of them, identified as Ravi, Komal, and Madhu, succumbed to their injuries on the way as all three were in a critical condition, bringing the total death toll to eight. The remaining two injured are currently undergoing treatment at Aligarh Medical College.

    According to police, all the victims were residents of Hargovindpur village under Junawai police station limits and were en route to Bilsi in Budaun district as part of a wedding procession.

    What was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into a horrific tragedy for the families involved. Locals say the Bolero was being driven at high speed, and the driver reportedly lost control before crashing into the college wall.

    On receiving information about the accident, Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi and Additional SP Anukriti Sharma rushed to the scene. The vehicle was completely mangled and had to be cut open with the help of a JCB machine to rescue the trapped passengers.
