  • MIL-OSI Global: Anti-trans measures don’t just target transgender men and women – a sociologist explains how ‘male’ or ‘female’ categories miss the mark for nonbinary Americans

    Source: The Conversation – USA – By Barbara J. Risman, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, University of Illinois Chicago

    The nonbinary flag, shown here on a pin, represents people who say ‘man’ or ‘woman’ does not describe their sense of self. Abraham Gonzalez Fernandez/Moment via Getty Images

    Since his inauguration in January 2025, President Donald Trump has issued several executive orders that seek to limit federal recognition of transgender people. These orders have attempted to ban transgender athletes from women’s sports, require identity documents to label people as biologically male or female, bar federal funding for gender-affirming care for minors and bar transgender people from serving in the military.

    The common element in each of these policies is a promise from Trump’s inaugural speech that his administration would recognize only two genders: male and female.

    These executive orders make life difficult for transgender people, many of whom do identify as women or men, just not the sex they were assigned at birth. Apart from that, however, the emphasis on two and only two genders denies the existence of another group that is often misunderstood: nonbinary people.

    Trans vs. nonbinary

    I am a sociologist who studies gender. Over the past few years, co-researchers and I have interviewed 123 nonbinary people in three regions in America: the South, the Midwest and the West Coast. These interviewees spoke about how nonbinary people’s increased visibility in society in recent years helped them feel more welcome and liberated from gender stereotypes.

    All of the respondents are nonbinary. They do not want to be seen as the opposite sex from what they were assigned at birth; they do not feel they were “born in the wrong body.”

    Rather, they want to avoid being forced into the either/or labels that the categories “masculine” and “feminine” or “man” and “woman” entail. They opt out of those binary identifications altogether.

    For many nonbinary people, the pronouns they/them help express their sense of gender.
    Luis Alvarez/DigitalVision via Getty Images

    Decades of research, some of it our own, have shown that sex and gender are different from one another. Sex refers to primary and secondary sex characteristics, while gender is about the cultural meanings built upon sex categories.

    Gender is a social system that justifies rules and expectations that differentiate between the rights and social roles of men and women. These systems vary across time and place. Today, there are societies such as those in Iceland, Barbados and Bosnia-Herzegovina where women lead the government, while in other societies women must be covered or secluded at home.

    Sense of self

    Most of the people we talked to were under age 30. Typically, they rejected the societal pressure to adopt the personality characteristics that are stereotypically associated with their biological sex, such as submissiveness for women and toughness for men.

    Many of them also reject the ways people are expected to dress and use their bodies to show whether they are men or women. Some people who had been raised as boys wore nail polish and earrings, for example, while sporting a beard. Others wore long earrings and makeup – though those kinds of choices do not necessarily mean someone is trans or nonbinary. Many of the respondents who had been raised as girls, meanwhile, chose to wear masculine clothing. They wanted to mix and match traditional symbols of gender.

    Many of the respondents had felt that binary gender identities never quite fit, and they described feeling overjoyed or relieved when they learned about the word “nonbinary”: an identity that offered a more accurate reflection of their sense of self.

    “I was just kind of a flesh blob to myself, until I kind of found out that there was a term … nonbinary. And I heard the term and I was like, “Oh, that actually sounds correct for me. That actually feels right …”

    Another person we interviewed remembered:

    “Before I knew what to call myself … it was like a sense of emptiness. … I finally found that piece to put in that empty spot. And it feels more full now. Like, I feel complete now.”

    He, she, they

    The implications of that discovery were quite diverse, however. Although all the interviewees identified as nonbinary, what that meant for how they wanted to interact with their friends and families differed dramatically.

    For about half of our respondents, using the pronouns “they/them” rather than he/him or she/her was very important, because using that pronoun made them feel respected. Indeed, when asked how they felt being referred to as they/them, one person told us:

    “It felt like magic. It felt like everything just went into place and everything fit. And I was just like, ‘Oh, my God, this is … this is it.‘”

    Not all nonbinary people prefer to be addressed as ‘they/them.’
    MarioGuti/iStock via Getty Images Plus

    Other people we interviewed didn’t really care how others refer to them: he, she or they. Some of these people described having a flexible sense of their own gender. Some days they feel more feminine and use “she”; other days they feel more masculine, and “he” might work better.

    “I don’t have to choose one,” one person told us about their pronouns. “I just need all of them in the arsenal.”

    Still others said they don’t care about a “proper” pronoun because they do not think gender should matter at all. They don’t want to be a third category, a “they.” Instead, they hope for a world where their body parts do not determine how they’re perceived or treated, and so gender is not central to their identity. They would like to do without gender entirely.

    Significance – for everyone

    The people we interviewed want the right to live in peace without being forced into a gender category. The recent executive orders deny this freedom by declaring that gender “does not provide a meaningful basis for identification” – contradicting a decades-long consensus in the social sciences on the distinction between sex and gender.

    Understanding that sex and gender are related but different matters not only for people who identify as nonbinary or transgender, but for everyone. Without that understanding, it is far too easy to presume socially constructed gender differences are essentially biological and to stigmatize people who do not follow strict gender norms. If you believe the myth that biology alone is the sole reason women and men differ, it would be easy to presume, for example, that women are naturally less ambitious or that men cannot be as nurturing.

    If I have learned anything from our team’s research on nonbinary young people, it is that human beings are creative and try to carve out a place for themselves in the world. The evidence suggests that gender nonconformity and diversity is wide and deep in America. What is at stake, however, is how much freedom or oppression individuals will face as they express themselves.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: An exhibition of the competition “Concepts of spatial development of municipalities of the Leningrad region” has opened at SPbGASU

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

    Source: Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering – Projects in the exhibition hall of the Faculty of Architecture

    On May 27, SPbGASU opened an exhibition of projects submitted to the competition “Concepts for the Spatial Development of Municipalities of the Leningrad Region 2025” in four of five nominations.

    The competition is held by the Committee for Urban Development Policy of the Leningrad Region. The exhibition is organized at two sites of our university at once. The lower balustrade presents the concepts of the Wedding Palace in Vsevolozhsk and the museum storage facility in Staraya Ladoga. In the exhibition hall of the architectural faculty, you can see the concepts of the House of Culture in the city of Telmana and the Regional Sports Training Center in the village of Roshchino.

    Both experienced and novice authors compete in the anonymous competition. The winners in each nomination will receive a cash prize of 516 thousand rubles.

    “I am very glad that the Leningrad Region is exhibiting projects of such a significant competition. Moreover, this competition is not only for students, but also for professional architects. If a student wins, how will he implement his project at a serious level? In this case, we, teachers, experienced architects, will definitely help. In all cases, this is a very interesting experience, a very beautiful exhibition,” said Ekaterina Voznyak, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, at the opening.

    “For me, this is the first experience of preparing a joint exhibition at SPbGASU, my alma mater, my native university. Last week, the construction block of the Leningrad Region Government held a meeting with the university management. We agreed on joint and long-term work. The site of the architectural university can be actively used, especially since the Committee for Urban Development Policy and the Committee for Construction of the Leningrad Region separately actively interact with the faculties of SPbGASU,” said First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Urban Development Policy of the Leningrad Region – Chief Architect of the Leningrad Region, Associate Professor of the Department of Urban Development of SPbGASU Sergey Lutchenko.

    Sergey Ivanovich reported that the committee strives to attract young people to its competitions, and the fruits of this approach are already there: three universities reached the finals of the competition to create a concept for the modernization of the memorial and landscape complex “Road of Life” – Moscow Architectural Institute, SPbGASU and St. Petersburg Mining University. On Children’s Day, June 1, a new recreation space opens in Tosno – a summer wooden parklet. The authors of the architectural concept are SPbGASU students who won the competition to create an architectural concept for a parklet for squares in cities of the Leningrad Region.

    The fact that the exhibition is being held in one of the most authoritative universities among those that train architects will contribute to the popularization of the competition, says Deputy Chairman of the Leningrad Region Construction Committee Evgeny Enokaev. Evgeny Kemilevich emphasized that the committee is a regional government customer and plans to implement all winning projects. Perhaps there will be interested parties who will implement other projects in other cities.

    The meeting of the competition committee (with defenses) in the nominations “Concept of the Wedding Palace in Vsevolozhsk”, “Concept of the House of Culture in Telmana”, “Concept of the Regional Sports Training Center in Roshchino” and “Concept of the Storage Facility in Staraya Ladoga” will be held on June 3, 2025 in the St. Petersburg House of the Architect at the address: St. Petersburg, Bolshaya Morskaya St., Bldg. 52.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Sports hernias can cause severe pain in the groin region – and footballers may be at greatest risk

    Source: The Conversation – UK – By Dan Baumgardt, Senior Lecturer, School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, University of Bristol

    Sports hernias – which are more common in men – cause pain in the groin and pubic region. Inspiration GP/ Shutterstock

    A friend of mine came to see me recently complaining of an odd ache he’d noted in his lower abs and groin. He couldn’t blame it on crunches at the gym, nor a cow kicking him in the belly again (he’s a farmer). But he does spend a fair amount of his time on the football pitch and was now noticing that every training session and match was bringing the pain on – sometimes agonisingly so.

    The diagnosis? A sports hernia. This condition also goes by many other names, including athletic pubalgia and Gilmore’s groin – after the late British surgeon Jerry Gilmore who was the first to coin it. It’s actually a fairly recently described condition, dating back to only the 1980s.

    The main symptom of a sports hernia is pain in the pubic and groin regions, brought on through athletic activity. The condition is actually more common that you think, especially so in footballers. Around 70% of all sports hernias appear to be related to the sport. It’s also estimated that groin pain accounts for around 5-18% of athletic injuries.

    A sport’s hernia is not your typical hernia. In fact, it’s not really a hernia at all.

    A true hernia is defined as when a section of tissue or organ passes into a space where it shouldn’t be. Many will be aware of those hernias which involve a section of bowel passing through the abdominal wall – such as an inguinal hernia.

    There are other types of hernias as well. For instance, your stomach can pop through a gap in the diaphragm and into the chest (called a hiatus hernia). More seriously, even the brain can herniate – out of one of the holes in the skull.

    But a sports hernia is different, in that it actually arises from overuse of the abdominal muscles.

    The abdominals include the long, straight and central “rectus abdominis” muscles – which allow you to perform a sit-up or crunch. Three layers of muscle also lie on either side of the abdominals. These are the obliques, which have important roles in twisting and turning our bodies. The muscles are also mixed with layers of tendon and connective tissue which not only attach them together, but also to the bones and ligaments of the pelvis.

    Sports hernias are typically caused by moves which involve a lot of twisting and turning – and especially those occurring at speed. Hip movements can also put strain on where the ab muscles attach at the groin region. These actions appear to cause shearing and tears in the tissue, leading to pain. It’s felt in the groin or lower abs, usually on one side. In men, who are particularly at risk, pain may also be felt in the genitalia.

    Some sports rely upon these sorts of moves and actions during play. Think about dribbling in football and hockey, or pinning and throwing opponents in wrestling or martial arts. Slalom skiing is another prime example – travelling at speed and rapidly changing direction. Tackling and scrum action in rugby or American football, and explosive block starts and hurdling in track athletes might also be to blame.

    People who play sports that have a lot of twisting, such as football, may have a greater risk of suffering a sports hernia.
    Vitalii Vitleo/ Shutterstock

    The condition appears much more common in males, who are up to nine times more likely to develop it. This is perhaps because of the anatomy of their lower abs, which is different to females. The testes – which initially develop inside the abdomen – descend to the scrotum during the foetal period. But to do this, they actually have to pass through the layers of the abdominal wall which makes the structure weaker and potentially more prone to damage.

    While sports hernias are vastly more common in athletes because of the regular repetitive strain they put their bodies under, it’s still technically possible for non-athletes to get it.

    If you work in a job where there’s regular heavy lifting, pivoting as you do so – on a building site for instance – it may be possible to sustain the same injury. Or, doing too many advanced core exercises at the gym before you’re sufficiently strong enough might also make you more prone. Dead lifts and core exercises that use a medicine ball (such as Russian twists) are some culprits.

    Managing a sports hernia

    If you do develop a sports hernia, it appears that improving core strength may help you recover. Patients diagnosed with a sports hernia typically undergo a training programme to strengthen and stabilise their core muscles. In athletes who already have a strong core, it may also be worthwhile training muscles that strengthen the pelvis alongside a gradual return to sport. Physiotherapy, massage and acupuncture may also help.

    Some cases might also require surgery to reinforce the groin structure, and relieve any tension on the tissues.

    There’s evidence to suggest that sports hernias are both under-reported and under-diagnosed. This may be because they get confused with other types of injuries – such as an inguinal hernia, which is also related to the groin, more commonly found in males and associated with abdominal wall strain and damage.

    The key difference is that a real inguinal hernia causes a swelling in the groin region or scrotum, whereas sports hernias do not. Inguinal hernias can also cause complications if the bowel gets twisted and obstructed, which can have potentially severe consequences.

    So, if you’re someone who participates in these twisting, turning types of sports and notice any of the symptoms of a sports hernia, it’s best to stop instead of pushing yourself through the pain. You should also speak to a doctor in case there are signs of a true hernia, which often requires further surgical treatment.

  • MIL-OSI: Churchill Very Pleased to Report High Grade Antimony >10%Sb, and Gold >10g/t Au at Black Raven Past-Producers, NL

    Source: GlobeNewswire (MIL-OSI)

    TORONTO, May 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Churchill Resources Inc. (“Churchill“) is extremely pleased to announce that due-diligence sampling at the historical Frost Cove Antimony and Stewart Gold mines on the Black Raven property returned assays of >10% antimony and >10g/t gold, respectively. These samples exceeded the detection limit for those elements, and further assay work is underway to determine their precise metal contents. The Frost Cove Antimony Veins and host felsic dyke have been traced over 800m on surface, with numerous historical samples grading >1% Sb (the upper detection limit of the historical assays), and has never been drilled.

    “These exceptional results further validate the Company’s strategic pivot to antimony and gold at Black Raven’s past-producing mines, and underscores the entire property’s significant potential. They confirm and expand upon historical records from the property reported in our news release of April 14th, 2025.   Further successful exploration at Frost Cove confirming these grade tenors along strike would place it among the highest-grade antimony projects globally. Finally, Churchill is very pleased to announce the execution of the definitive agreement dated May 6th, 2025 to acquire a 100% undivided interest in the Black Raven Antimony Property, from property owners Eddie and Roland Quinlan.” said Paul Sobie, Chief Executive Officer of Churchill.

    The Black Raven property encloses the two small-scale past producing mines which operated between 1890 and 1918 exploiting stibnite, gold and arsenopyrite. The mines and numerous related occurrences constitute an extensive high-grade hydrothermal system carrying gold, antimony and silver in veins and stockworks. The historical mines and other occurrences are located within close proximity to each other, in a larger-scale geological environment defined by intense veining and alteration associated with felsic intrusions. For the first time in the project’s history, the entire mineralized system has been consolidated for systematic, state-of-the-art exploration.

    Highlights:

    • Frost Cove Antimony Mine adits are in excellent condition for systematic sampling, CRI grab samples from the two known veins in upper adit assayed >10% Sb
    • Detailed sampling of both adits, and ~800m of known surface strike extent, with trenching and channel sampling, will commence in June
    • Numerous other historical high-grade gold-silver veins confirmed including the past-producer Stewart Gold Mine – large hydrothermal system confirmed which is also to be evaluated with trenching/stripping/channel sampling
    • Additional high-grade Au-Ag-Sb prospects not yet re-sampled

    The Black Raven Property is located approximately 60km northwest of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, and hosts two past-producing mines dating back to the late 1800’s, the Frost Cove Antimony Mine, and the Stewart Gold-Antimony Mine. The Black Raven Property is located approximately 100km north of the Beaver Brook Antimony Mine, which is currently under care and maintenance. It is reported that the owners are actively exploring for more deposits to feed the mill.
    (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/antimony-mine-closure-1.6703205)

    Black Raven, like all of Churchill’s projects, is strategically located in Newfoundland and Labrador, which boast access to North American and European markets, proximity to deep water ports, exceptional power infrastructure and transportation networks. Like all of Churchill’s projects, Black Raven also benefits from Newfoundland & Labrador’s large and diversified minerals industry, which includes world class mines and processing facilities, and a well-developed mineral exploration sector with locally based drilling and geological expertise.

    Antimony: A Critical Mineral in High Demand

    Antimony is a critical mineral essential for national security and modern technology, with over 90% of global production controlled by China, Russia and other non-Western jurisdictions. The metal is a vital component in military applications, while also being crucial for certain flame retardants, strengthening alloys in batteries, and emerging energy storage technologies. Recent Chinese export restrictions have driven prices to record levels exceeding $50,000 per tonne, highlighting antimony’s strategic importance to a “Fortress North America” approach to critical mineral supply chains and making domestic North American sources increasingly important for economic and national security.

    Due-Diligence Sampling Program

    Antimony, gold and silver assay data from historical surface grab samples are presented in the figure below along with the 2025 Wilton due-diligence sample assays.   Due-dilligence samples from several of the other prospects on the property returned high gold, lead, and zinc values per the figure and table below, with silver assays still pending. Importantly, reportedly high-grade occurrences at M.H. (Morton Harbour) Head, M.H.1 and M.H.2 were not able to be sampled during this first tour of the property.

    All samples were selected by Dr. Derek Wilton, independent QP to Churchill, during field visits on April 24th and 25th in the company of Mr. Sobie and two senior field technicians, and led by vendor Roland Quinlan. All samples were labelled and securely bound and delivered to the prep laboratory of SGS Canada Inc. in Grand Falls-Windsor, for crushing and pulverizing. Splits were couriered to Burnaby, B.C. by SGS for assay work with analytical methods per the table below. Over-limit samples are currently receiving ore-grade assay work to determine precise metal contents. All due-diligence samples described in this news release were grab samples and are selective by nature and are unlikely to represent average grades of the property.

    Frost Cove Antimony Mine – the historical workings are intact and as described by Heyl (1936), with a lower adit just above sea-level on the coast, and the upper adit commencing ~50m to the south, ~15m above the lower adit. It was not possible to examine the lower adit due to ice blockage, but the upper adit was accessible per the photos below and extends ~15m to a face where the antimony veins and host quartz feldspar dyke are exposed. The mine exploited two quartz-antimony veins intruded along the margins of the dyke over a stope width of ~2.5m. A considerable amount of material has been mined out between the surface and the entrances to the two adits. The host dyke and associated quartz-antimony veins have been mapped and sampled over ~800m per the figure with several pits reporting elevated historical sampling results.

    Samples DW 307 and 308 are from the massive sulphide portions of the two quartz-antimony veins (HW and FW veins) and both assayed above the detection limit of >10% Sb. The foot wall vein is ~50cm in width, and the hanging wall vein ~15cm in width at the sample site in the upper adit, with impressive massive stibnite zones within the veins, per photos below.

    Sample 306 was quartz-carbonate-qfp (quartz-feldspar-porphyry)-antimony vein material from rubble at the mouth of the lower adit, and it assayed 3.32% Sb (with modest Zn).

    Follow-up work has commenced as CRI crews have completed clearing away trees from the mined-out stope to provide safe access and better exposure. Plans are in place to collect several channel samples from both adits, as well as systematically sample at surface along the known 800m strike through mechanical trenching/stripping/channel samples.  Several affiliated veins to the main one, based on the Heyl’s (1936) mapping will be investigated.

    The table below provides assays received to-date for all 24 due-diligence samples.

    Stewart Gold Mine – the site has been rehabilitated with the shaft and all pits covered and filled with gravel. Sample 302 quartz-arsenopyrite vein material from a very lean rubble pile (virtually all waste) assayed >10g/t. Follow-up planning for a trenching and drilling program at Stewart is commencing.

    Nearby Gold Veins to Stewart Mine – Sample 303 assayed 7.51 g/t Au (plus modest Pb and Zn). In samples 304-305 from veins across the harbour and along trend –both samples returned 7.7g/t Au (plus modest Cu, higher tenor Pb and Zn). Arsenopyrite is the predominant sulphide within these narrow <0.5m veins.

    Taylor’s Room Gold Prospect – only rubble piles were located thus far, as overburden and forest cover obscure the veins and pits have been filled in. CRI sampling didn’t confirm previously reported high values, with the best sample DW-310 grading 1.98 g/t Au from weathered arsenopyrite vein material.  The CRI crew has completed cutting down the very thick trees and bush cover over these veins for better sampling access. The historical shaft is still present albeit full of water.

    Nearby Veins to Taylor’s Room Veins – two different narrow quartz-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins (samples DW-314 and DW-315) graded 5.81 and 5.09 g/t Au respectively with DW-315 returning very high Pb and Zn assays.

    Morton’s Harbour Pond/Western Copper – collectively these two prospects exhibit characteristics of a large-scale (~1km diameter) porphyry mineralization target based on wide-spread, intense stockwork veining carrying modest gold, copper, silver and molybdenum contents based on historical work. Low but encouraging values in Au, Mo, Zn were returned for samples DW-319 to 321 and 323 with one quartz vein sample (DW-321) grading 2.16 g/t Au (plus low copper, high Pb and Zn). At Western Copper – low Cu values were returned from three samples collected at past surface channel sampling, DW-316 to 318. CRI has compiled the results from the four Winkie holes drilled by Eddie Quinlan in 2024 which intersected mineralized Cu-Au-Ag stockwork in altered felsic volcanic rocks (0.1-0.3% Cu, 50-350ppb Au plus Ag) from collar to their end of holes at ~60m. CRI also has compiled 2012 Induced Polarization survey work over the larger porphyry target to plan follow-up trenching and drilling for the summer.

    Black Raven Antimony-Gold Property
    The Black Raven Property comprises nine map-staked licenses constituting a single contiguous block of 125 claims that in total cover 3,125ha or 31.25km2. Churchill and the vendors have agreed to a 4km wide area of interest around the property boundaries as part of their agreement.

    Churchill intends to immediately commence its sampling program on the surface showings and any accessible historical workings following compilation of all historical data is complete. The entire property will be surveyed with LiDAR and orthophotos as soon as the Government permit has been received. Follow-up prospecting and systematic trenching, with channel sampling work as required, are being planned for initiation in June based on the compiled database. The derived geological and geochemical data will used to outline drill targets along strike and at depth to the historical workings.

    The past sampling data reported in this News Release is historic in nature and does not meet NI43-101 standards. Churchill has relied on the information supplied in the Government of Newfoundland field assessment reports and from information found in the Mineral Occurrence Database System operated by the Newfoundland Department of Industry, Energy and, Technology. Para-archer Harvinder Singh was conferred the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, honouring his trailblazing achievements in Indian para-archery and his inspiring journey of resilience and success.

    Born on February 25, 1991, in a remote village in Haryana, Harvinder Singh defied early life challenges to etch his name in India’s sporting history. A childhood medical mishap resulted in a permanent disability in his left leg, but this adversity became the foundation of his unyielding determination.

    Taking up archery in 2012 under the mentorship of coach Jiwanjot Singh Teja, Harvinder’s rise was swift and inspirational. His international debut came in 2017, and within a year, he created history by clinching India’s first-ever gold medal in para-archery at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. He triumphed in the Men’s Individual Recurve (Open category), a feat that placed him firmly on the global map.

    Harvinder Singh’s accomplishments only grew from there. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, he became the first Indian archer to win a Paralympic medal, securing bronze. He followed this with another bronze in the Men’s Team Recurve event at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

    However, it was his golden performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games that truly defined his legacy. With a commanding win in the Men’s Recurve Archery (Open category), Harvinder Singh delivered India’s first-ever gold medal in para-archery at the Paralympic level—a moment of immense pride for the nation.

    Beyond the sporting arena, Harvinder Singh has also excelled in academics. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Punjabi University, Patiala, and is currently pursuing a PhD in the same field, embodying the spirit of all-round excellence.

    His contributions have previously been recognised with the Arjuna Award in 2021 and the Bhim Award by the Haryana government in 2022. Now, with the conferment of the Padma Shri, Shri Harvinder Singh joins the ranks of India’s most respected civilian honourees.
  • MIL-OSI Russia: Sergei Sobyanin took part in the jubilee parade of cadets

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

    Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

    The annual parade of the Moscow cadet movement “The connection between generations will not be broken!” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War took place on Victory Square on Poklonnaya Gora.

    Before the parade began, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ and the Mayor of Moscow addressed the cadets with a welcoming speech. Sergei Sobyanin and the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergei Kravtsov.

    “I congratulate you on the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the glorious anniversary that we are celebrating on these bright May days. Moscow sacredly honors the legacy of the victors. Courage, fortitude, patriotism and selfless service to the Fatherland. Cadets and the entire younger generation grow and are brought up on these values. And today, on Poklonnaya Gora, we see the best representatives of the Moscow cadet movement in the parade formation. Next to you, shoulder to shoulder, are cadets from other cities of Russia and Belarus. This emphasizes the traditions of the cadet brotherhood. You are smart and talented, strong and courageous, energetic and purposeful. And such concepts as honor and dignity are the main principles of life for you. Your peers look up to you, your family and friends are rightfully proud of you. Everything is ahead of you. And I am sure that you will succeed, because where there are cadets, there is victory,” said Sergei Sobyanin.

    His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ congratulated the cadets on the holiday.

    “Moscow has truly changed beyond recognition in recent years. It is a wonderful city, convenient for living, beautiful, which really reflects the general development of our entire state. Many thanks to Sergei Semyonovich Sobyanin, the City Hall, all those who work to beautify and improve all aspects of Muscovites’ lives. Of course, thanks to all of us, to all our people, to all working people, to all who love their country and work for its prosperity,” noted Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill.

    The Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov emphasized that Moscow is becoming the center of the cadet brotherhood, which is based on spiritual and moral values, courage and loyalty to traditions. Today, a strategy for the development of cadet education is being developed. 510 thousand children are studying in cadet and Cossack corps and schools, educational organizations with cadet and Cossack classes.

    “The Moscow Cadet Movement unites young patriots who are ready to take up the baton of serving the Fatherland from their great-grandfathers, grandfathers, and fathers. Cadets are the golden fund of the Russian state. The future of the country is in your hands. And now your main task is to comprehend the world, study science, and get good and excellent grades. Cadet – that sounds proud. Love for the Fatherland is not just words, but deeds,” added Sergey Kravtsov.

    The parade was attended by seven thousand people. Among them were combat veterans, including participants in the special military operation (SVO), representatives of legislative and executive authorities, law enforcement agencies and public organizations, teachers, parents and students from the capital’s schools.

    On behalf of the Moscow cadet movement, Artem Lazorev, a student of school No. 1794 named after A.S. Chufistov, spoke.

    “In May, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. We are proud of the feat of our ancestors. A feat that will be inscribed in history and in our hearts for centuries. We will be proud that we continue the work of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. We are preparing to serve our great Motherland. We remember them, we thank them. The connection between generations will not be broken,” the cadet thanked.

    More than three thousand cadets took part in the parade – 52 parade units. Among them:

    — 43 ceremonial units of students from cadet classes of comprehensive schools in Moscow;

    — three ceremonial units of students from federal general education institutions: the Alexander Nevsky Cadet Corps of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the M.A. Sholokhov Moscow Presidential Cadet School of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, and the Moscow Suvorov Military School of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation;

    — a ceremonial crew of the cadet boarding school with initial flight training named after three times Hero of the Soviet Union A.I. Pokryshkin (city of Fryazino, Moscow region);

    – four parade units from Lugansk, Kherson, Izhevsk and Perm;

    — a ceremonial formation of the cadet delegation from Belarus (city of Brest).

    The Moscow Cadet Movement Parade has been held since 2015. Its goal is to increase the prestige of the capital’s cadet education, to develop in young people a sense of pride in the history of the country and belonging to the cadet brotherhood, and to cultivate a readiness to serve the Fatherland.

    Festival-forum of the Moscow cadet movement

    This year, the Moscow Cadet Movement Festival and Forum began after the parade. The practical cluster for cadets and other guests hosts interactive master classes and exhibitions on tactical medicine, UAV control, VR training and fire training. Speaker sessions are also held here with the participation of Heroes of the Fatherland, representatives of the veteran community, government bodies, popular athletes and opinion leaders in the field of patriotic education of youth. These meetings are of greatest interest to educators, parents and teachers.

    The sports cluster hosts tournaments in team sports and tactical games: basketball, handball, mini-football, tag rugby, laser tag and archery tag. Guests can also attend master classes organized by sports federations, autograph sessions and meetings with famous athletes.

    The career guidance cluster features an exhibition of leading universities – partners of the Cadet Class in a Moscow School project and law enforcement agencies, interactive career guidance platforms and demonstration performances.

    In the creative cluster, spectators will see performances by the best creative cadet groups, exhibitions and photo zones on the theme of traditional crafts and Cossack culture.

    The festival-forum will end with a gala concert featuring popular domestic performers.

    Cadet education in Moscow

    In total, the cadet movement in the capital includes more than 30 thousand children. It has a banner approved by the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation, presented by the Mayor of Moscow and consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’.

    In Moscow schools, cadet education is one of the types of specialized training aimed at preparing students for military and civil service. The project began in 2014 with the first 70 cadet classes. They are now open in 236 schools.

    “Cadet education is one of the most popular in Moscow schools. More than 28 thousand children study in specialized classes. They are brought up in the best cadet traditions – with an emphasis on erudition, physical development, service to the Motherland and people. Many children join volunteer organizations and choose a military career,” the Mayor of Moscow wrote in

    on your telegram channel.

    Source: Sergei Sobyanin’s Telegram channel @mos_sobyanin

    Cadets are mainly trained in daytime mode from the seventh to the 11th grade. Cadet classes with round-the-clock stay in the system Department of Education and Science of the City of Moscow are available at two cadet boarding schools (the First Moscow Cadet Corps and Cadet Boarding School No. 5), as well as at the Police College.

    There are also five cadet educational institutions of federal subordination in Moscow. These are the Moscow Suvorov Military School, the Moscow Presidential Cadet School named after M.A. Sholokhov of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, the Cadet School of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation named after Alexander Nevsky, the Moscow Cadet Corps “Boarding School for Pupils of the Ministry of Defense of Russia” and the Moscow Military Music School of the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

    Children are selected for cadet classes of city schools based on their academic achievements, physical development and health, and their degree of focus on the future choice of a military or civil servant profession. The profile of cadet education is provided by ministries and departments of the security forces, including the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. Together with them, schools determine the subject profile and a variable set of additional general development programs for cadet classes depending on the specifics of the department, and also provide in-depth study of Russian history.

    In 2024, more than 90 percent of graduates of cadet classes and institutions entered higher education institutions and secondary vocational education organizations, including law enforcement agencies.

    Every year, Moscow cadets participate in city events of patriotic orientation. Among them:

    — the parade of the Moscow city cadet movement “The connection between generations will not be broken!” dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War;

    — Moscow meta-subject Olympiad “The connection between generations will not be broken”;

    — Cadet Class Day at the Victory Museum (standing watch as an honor guard at post No. 1 near the Flame of Memory and Glory on Poklonnaya Hill);

    — educational project “Cadet Day at VDNKh”;

    – Cadet Spartakiad;

    — city competition “Review of the formation and songs. “March to the victors!””;

    — events dedicated to days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia;

    — events held by public and veteran organizations of Moscow: Moscow City Council of Veterans of War, Labor, Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies; Club of Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of the Russian Federation and Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory of the City of Moscow and the Moscow Region; Regional Public Fund for the Support of Heroes of the Soviet Union and Heroes of the Russian Federation named after General E.N. Kocheshkov; Interregional Public Fund for Social Security “Law and Order-Shield”.

    In the 2024/2025 academic year, 895 students of cadet classes became winners and prize-winners of the meta-subject Olympiad “The Connection between Generations Will Not Be Broken”. More than six thousand cadets passed the demonstration exam. More than eight thousand students attended classes in 20 areas of the cycle of introductory professional trials “Cadet Class – Path to the Profession” and career guidance events at partner universities.

    Among the cadets’ sporting achievements is passing the standards of the “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO) complex. Thus, 3,134 cadets became holders of the gold GTO badge, 2,076 people became holders of the silver badge, and 1,873 students became holders of the bronze badge.

    Patriotic education of youth

    Patriotic education is an integral part of the educational process in the Moscow education system.

    The main areas of this work include preserving the continuity of generations. Priorities include perpetuating the memory of the participants in the Great Patriotic War and implementing joint projects with veterans’ organizations. In the system of the Moscow Department of Education and Science, more than 70 schools and colleges are named after heroes. For example, in recent years, the capital’s schools have been named after V.A. Matrosov, R. Sorge, A.N. Samsonov, M.V. Grizodubova. In 2024, the name of A.S. Chufistov, director of school No. 1794 who died in the SVO, was perpetuated.

    Every year, together with the city’s veteran organizations, about a thousand joint projects are implemented, including museum-historical Olympiads, competitions, meetings with students in school museums, and courage lessons.

    Since 2001, the Heroes’ Cup review competition has been held for the best organization of patriotic education in educational organizations of the capital’s Department of Education and Science. The competition takes into account the presence of volunteer and young army units, sports and tourist sections and associations, as well as the number of children attending them. Important components of the assessment are the work of children in caring for memorial sites under the patronage of the educational organization, the quality of passing five-day training camps and fulfilling the standards of the GTO complex. All subordinate educational organizations participate in the competition.

    Museum pedagogy is developing. There are more than 1,100 museums in the capital’s schools. Of these, more than 600 are dedicated to the history of Russia, including the Great Patriotic War and the special military operation. Military personnel take an active part in organizing exhibitions: they donate personal belongings and documents to museums, and also hold meetings with children.

    In the 2024/2025 academic year, military-patriotic clubs began to develop in the Moscow education system as associations of additional education. From September to May, their number increased from 193 to more than 400. Currently, over 22 thousand people are involved in military-patriotic clubs.

    The city’s educational institutions closely cooperate with the Victory Museum on Poklonnaya Hill. Together with the largest museum complex in Russia dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War and World War II, a project such as the educational and historical quest “The Feat of the People” is being implemented. It is visited by 103 thousand people per year.

    The interactive excursion program is of great interest “Battle for Moscow. First Victory”The exhibition at the Victory Museum includes five three-dimensional interactive panoramas, 24 multimedia complexes, more than 1.7 thousand exhibits, including personal belongings of soldiers, generals and people’s militia fighters, over 3.5 thousand photographs, over a thousand scanned documents and over two thousand reference materials. The exhibition is visited by 60 thousand people per year.

    Together with the Russian Orthodox Church, the Victory Museum is holding an interactive tour, “A Journey into History. Faith in Victory.” The project tells about the contribution of believers — Orthodox and representatives of other faiths — to the fight against fascism and the approach of the Great Victory. Schoolchildren will learn about the exploits of partisan priests, the origin of the expression “sister of mercy,” and the qualities that warrior defenders cultivate in themselves. The annual number of excursionists is 25 thousand people.

    Another direction of patriotic education of youth is conducting lessons “Conversations about the important”. Each school week in educational institutions of the city begins with the raising of the State Flag of the Russian Federation and the performance of the anthem. Classes of the cycle “Conversations about the important” are held, dedicated to the peoples of Russia, its history, culture, nature.

    These classes are also held at the sites of additional education centers and cultural institutions. In September 2024, the project “Conversations about the Important in the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia” began, which was organized by the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia and the Moscow Center for Educational Practices. Excursions dedicated to significant events in the history of Russia in the 19th-21st centuries were attended by more than 10 thousand schoolchildren and students;

    Young people actively participate in the volunteer movement. Every year, students from schools and colleges, under whose patronage there are more than a thousand objects of military glory, take part in citywide memorial and patronage events.

    Other areas of volunteer work include social, environmental, sports, cultural, media volunteering, professional and cyber volunteering.

    On the basis of schools and colleges, 22 support sites have been created, which are operators of volunteer projects and actions. More than 100 thousand students actively participate in volunteer squads;

    An important area of patriotic education is preparing young people for military service. Every year, 10th graders and second-year college students attend five-day training camps as part of the study of the program “Fundamentals of Security and Defense of the Homeland.”

    This year, the training camp is being held at the Patriot Health and Educational Center, the Avangard Educational and Methodological Center, the Preobrazhensky Defense and Sports Center, and military units. More than 40,000 people will take part in the training camp. The children will learn the basics of military topography and military regulations, and acquire military medical, drill, tactical, fire, and technical training skills;

    In addition, more than 55 thousand Moscow schoolchildren participate in the All-Russian military-patriotic public movement “Yunarmiya”. The capital’s Yunarmiya members take part in events held by the main headquarters of the movement. The largest of them are ceremonial events dedicated to memorable dates and days of military glory of Russia (more than 25 thousand participants), the All-Russian military-patriotic game “Zarnitsa 2.0” (more than 17 thousand participants) and the All-Russian children’s and youth festival “Voroshilov shooter” (more than five thousand participants);

    The work of directors’ education advisers is of great importance in the patriotic education of young people. This position was introduced in Moscow schools and colleges in September 2023 as part of the federal project “Patriotic Education of Citizens of the Russian Federation” of the national project “Education”. Currently, more than 1.2 thousand such specialists work in educational institutions.

    Directors’ advisors play an important role in the implementation of key federal and city projects in the field of education, as well as the development of children’s initiatives. They involve children in children’s public associations, school and student theaters, volunteer units, patriotic, sports and tourist clubs. Specialists also conduct various patronage events and courage lessons. This helps preserve the memory of the participants of the Great Patriotic War, heroes and veterans.

    A new online exhibition launched by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Museums & Galleries, Libraries and Archives services brings together 900 years of objects relating to Edinburgh.

    From Greyfriars Bobby’s collar to the National Covenant, visitors to a digital exhibition can see all kinds of fantastic objects and artworks and find out more about their stories.

    Edinburgh 900: Objects from Nine Centuries of City Life is hosted on the Capital Collections website. It showcases not only some of the treasures viewable in museum and gallery venues around the city, but also many items that have never been fully shared with the public before. These include a 19th century record of petty criminals, a rare Hearts and Hibs football programme, beautiful contemporary silver and ceramics and historic documents from as early as the 12th century.

    The exhibition launched on Friday 23 May with the first 20 objects, with new objects being released each month between May and September, when the City’s Edinburgh 900 celebrations officially conclude.

    The team behind the exhibition have not only been photographing and researching these amazing treasures, they’ve also been engaging with community groups across the city to capture their responses to them. Groups including MindRoom who work with neurodiverse young people and dementia-friendly group Art In the City, have been connecting with the objects and having their responses recorded for display in the digital exhibition. This work is in partnership with the Open University who have provided the interactive digital app technology to capture community responses.

    Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said:

    Edinburgh 900 is a year-long celebration of our city’s rich history, culture, and bright future. It’s incredible to see the diversity of historic objects cared for on behalf of the city all viewable together online. I’m sure viewers are going to really enjoy seeing the tiny historic details the photographs reveal, as well as diving into the background stories and responses from the community. It’s a real celebration of Edinburgh’s past and present.

    A small display in the City Art Centre foyer showcasing some of the objects included in the online exhibition will open in the Summer.

    The images are designed to give resident’s an early idea of how the upgrade could look.

    Councillor Carli Harper, cabinet member for major projects and finance, said: “These images will help show local residents what they can expect when this fabulous project is completed – namely fantastic facilities for local youngsters and the whole family to make the most of their park and get involved in sport all year round, whether it’s football, BMXing, or simply having a stroll around the beautiful park.”

    The Sloughbottom project is funded by £7.6mil from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund and £850,000 from the Greater Norwich Growth Board.

    Councillor Sue Holland, Chair of the Greater Norwich Growth Board, said: “This exciting project is a great example of the benefits of the Greater Norwich partnership. By working together, we can ensure that infrastructure projects, both large and small can be delivered, improving the quality of life of our residents.”

    Andrew Dernie, Chair of Norwich Town Deal Board said: “It’s great to see this project moving forward. Investing in Norwich parks and open spaces is pivotal to increasing the well-being of city residents.”

    • Modular storage facilities at the BMX track
    • Car park, signage, and lighting

    LCQ6: Promoting traditional customs and cultural activities
    Question:

    It is learnt that the traditional customs of “Petty Person Beating” and “Offering Sacrifices to the White Tiger” carried out underneath the Canal Road Flyover (commonly known as “Ngo Keng Kiu”) in Causeway Bay have attracted quite a number of tourists to view and experience them. However, due to the crowded environment at the location, there have been conflicts between tourists and local residents from time to time, which is not conducive to the promotion of the relevant cultural activities. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council:

    (1) whether it has compiled statistics on the change in the number of stall operators carrying out the aforesaid traditional customs and cultural activities underneath the flyover in the past 10 years; if so, of the details; if not, the reasons for that;

    (2) of the details of the authorities’ work in promoting the aforesaid traditional customs and cultural activities in the past three years, and whether the effectiveness of such work has been assessed; and

    (3) as it is learnt that at present, the aforesaid stall operators only hold business registration certificates and there is no accreditation mechanism for such cultural activities, while the management of stall operators and related activities also involves different policy areas (e.g. environmental hygiene and cultural tourism), whether the Government has considered setting up an interdepartmental management group to improve the relevant accreditation and management work with the focus on cultural conservation, so as to reduce the conflicts between tourists and residents while balancing the operational needs of the industry; if so, of the details; if not, the reasons for that?

    Reply:

    President,

    President Xi Jinping once pointed out that the outstanding traditional Chinese culture is the spiritual lifeblood of the Chinese nation. The current-term Government is committed to promoting the outstanding traditional Chinese culture and has introduced multiple measures over the past two years, including establishing the Chinese Culture Promotion Office and organising the Chinese Culture Festival. “Promote Profound Traditional Chinese Culture and Develop Cultural Contents with Hong Kong Character” was also formulated as one of the four strategic directions in the Blueprint for Arts and Culture and Creative Industries Development promulgated at the end of last year.

    From the perspective of traditional culture, whether a custom qualifies as “outstanding” traditional culture depends on its cultural values in terms of diversity and pluralism. The merit of traditional culture should also be evaluated based on among others, its transmission, dissemination, and level of prevalence.

    Both “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger” and “Beating Petty Person” are traditional Chinese culture with certain folk customs and symbolic meanings. In folk belief, White Tiger is seen as a malevolent spirit believed to bring misfortune. Thus, the ritual of “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger” aims to ward off bad luck and troubles. “Beating Petty Person”, a folk custom in southern China, involves striking paper effigies or wooden figures with various tools to drive away bad luck and negative energy.

    The “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger during Insects Awaken Day” is included as one of the items on the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory of Hong Kong. The item specifically pertains to the practice of “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger” conducted on the “Insects Awaken Day” within the “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” system, which typically falls on the 5th or 6th of March in the Gregorian calendar. This practice conducted on the “Insects Awaken Day” may include “Beating Petty Person”, and the practice of “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger” can take place at various venues across Hong Kong, without limitation to any specified location. However, the “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger” and “Beating Petty Person” activities underneath the Canal Road Flyover (commonly known as “Ngo Keng Kiu”) in Causeway Bay are operated all year round in general. These activities, which are not included in the scope of the “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” social practices, constitute commercial operations conducted by service providers.

    In consultation with the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Environment and Ecology Bureau, my consolidated reply to the question raised by the Hon Edward Leung is as follows:

    The area underneath Canal Road Flyover is a renowned location for “Beating Petty Person”. While peak activity occurs during the “Insects Awaken Day” in March each year, the stalls operate “year-round”. Currently, around ten stalls operate beneath the flyover for this ritual, primarily concentrated along the pedestrian walkway facing the Hennessy Road tram tracks.

    Relevant departments have all along been following up on the environmental hygiene and street management issues arising from “Beating Petty Person” and carrying out enforcement actions within their respective jurisdictions. The Wan Chai District Office (WCDO) co-ordinates interdepartmental clearance operations (Joint Operation) on a regular basis to mitigate nuisances caused by these activities to the local residents and the surrounding environment. On-street activities may involve the purviews of various departments. The work of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) is mainly to maintain environmental hygiene. The FEHD has been monitoring the traditional customs of “Beating Petty Person” underneath the Canal Road Flyover and officers will, during their routine inspection, take appropriate actions based on the actual circumstances to maintain environmental hygiene.

    From January to May 2025, the WCDO coordinated a total of nine Joint Operations at the aforementioned location. Prior to the operation, the Government will post notices on unauthorised articles placed on Government land, reminding owners to remove the obstructive items. During the Joint Operation day, any remaining articles would be cleared by the FEHD. The WCDO will advise the “Beating Petty Person” practitioners to maintain clear pedestrian pathways. The Hong Kong Police Force will be present to maintain public order and provide assistance as required. Furthermore, any unauthorised structures found to be occupying Government land would be referred to the Lands Department for follow-up action.

    In alignment with the objective of promoting the outstanding traditional Chinese culture, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) are committed to safeguarding, transmitting and promoting the ICH of Hong Kong while actively supporting the national policies on furthering the safeguarding of ICH. For ICH items across diverse domains, various corresponding measures are implemented to strengthen different aspects of work such as identification, documentation, research, preservation, promotion and transmission and to enhance the public’s understanding of ICH and engage the community in safeguarding ICH. An example of these measures includes the ICH Funding Scheme of the LCSD, which supports eligible local organisations and individuals in implementing meaningful local ICH projects to promote the items on the ICH Inventory of Hong Kong. In addition, the LCSD will also develop a mechanism and criteria in 2025 for recognising the bearers of the items on the Representative List of the ICH of Hong Kong, as well as organising the “Hong Kong ICH Month”. As to “Offering Sacrifices to White Tiger during Insects Awaken Day”, the first “Hong Kong ICH Month” to be held in June this year will include workshops to introduce “Twenty-Four Solar Terms”, including the introduction of this ICH item of “Insects Awaken Day”.

    In addition, the one-stop travel information platform of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, DiscoverHongKong, features information on “Beating Petty Person” under Ngo Keng Kiu. If visitors are interested, they can experience this distinctive local custom firsthand.

  • French Open 2025: Djokovic cruises through opener with straight-sets win

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

    Novak Djokovic began his 2025 Roland Garros campaign in trademark fashion on Tuesday, defeating American Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in a confident and composed first-round performance on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The victory came just three days after Djokovic captured his 100th tour-level title at the Geneva Open.

    Playing his first ATP head-to-head match against McDonald, Djokovic was in full control throughout the one-hour, 58-minute encounter. The windy conditions early in the match added some unpredictability, but the roof was closed midway through the second set due to rain. By then, the Serbian had already seized momentum, having won six of seven games from 2-2 in the opening set.

    The win extended Djokovic’s perfect record in Roland Garros first-round matches to 20-0. He has not dropped a set in an opener at the clay-court major since 2010, when he overcame Evgeny Korolev in four sets.

    “I try to enjoy every moment on this very special and beautiful court,” said Djokovic in French in his on-court interview. “I feel good, clearly, even more here because I’m reliving the memories of last year’s Olympics, the last time I played on this court. [They are] beautiful emotions.

    McDonald fought to stay competitive and managed one break of serve to narrow the gap in the second set, but Djokovic immediately broke back and closed it out. The 24-time Grand Slam champion converted five of nine breakpoints, according to ATP Stats, and maintained consistent depth from the baseline to stifle McDonald’s offense.

    Djokovic, ranked No. 6 in the ATP Rankings, reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2024 before a knee injury forced his withdrawal. He returned later in the year to win Olympic gold on the same court.

    “History in this sport has given me everything in my life, it means a lot to me. I always try to make history where I can… In all the tournaments I play, all the practises, all the matches, and especially during the biggest tournaments in the world. There is an opportunity to make more history, and that is one of the biggest motivations I have for competitions, for continuing to work and better myself,” the Serbian added.

    Djokovic will next face either Corentin Moutet or qualifier Clement Tabur in the second round.

  • MIL-OSI China: Chelsea eye European history in Conference League final

    Source: People’s Republic of China – State Council News

    Real Betis is aiming to lift the first European trophy in the club’s history, while Chelsea could become the first team to win all four major UEFA competitions if it defeats the Spanish side in Wednesday’s UEFA Conference League final in Wroclaw, Poland.

    The two coaches are well-acquainted. Since 2011, Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini had managed Enzo Maresca at Malaga for two years. In 2018, the Italian joined Pellegrini’s coaching staff at West Ham United.

    “I sent him a short message when we started in the group stage to say, ‘I will see you in Poland in the final.’ And when we got there, I gave him a call to say how happy I was to play the final against him,” said Pellegrini at a press conference on Tuesday.

    Chelsea’s Reece James (front) vies with Djurgarden’s Daniel Stensson during the UEFA Conference League semifinal second leg football match between Chelsea and Djurgarden at Stamford Bridge in London, Britain, on May 8, 2025. (Xinhua/Li Ying)

    Although Chelsea is viewed as the favorite, Pellegrini expressed confidence in his team’s chances of claiming its first European title.

    “We have the same possibility to win the game and we will start from the first minute trying to do it,” said the 71-year-old, adding, “I’ve said many times that you have to be able to manage the emotional side because a big mistake can decide the result.”

    Chelsea arrived in Poland after a resounding win over Nottingham Forest secured fourth place in the Premier League and qualification for next season’s Champions League.

    “I said a few times during the season that for me, it was already a good season, and it can become a very good season if we finish top four or top five. The first target was there, we achieved it last Sunday. And the chance to do the second is here,” Maresca told the media on Tuesday evening.

    “The Conference League is important. If we are able to win, it’s a good thing because we continue to build the winning mentality. We need to show again the desire to win games,” he added.

    Chelsea has not won a trophy since May 2021, when it defeated Manchester City in the Champions League final in Porto, Portugal.

    Maresca expects his young squad to rise to the occasion. “The message to my players is that we did something important, but if we want to confirm that we’re becoming an important club, we have to show the desire to win the game. It’s a final game and it is the one we want to win,” he said.

    Clinton, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins toured the current fire station in Clinton and reviewed plans for a new station made possible by $2,000,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending she secured through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee. The existing 5,000-square-foot station is too small to support the needs of Clinton’s current fire and rescue operations and cannot accommodate the updated equipment the department plans to purchase.

    “Touring the current fire station today gave me a clear picture of the challenges facing Clinton firefighters and EMTs to swiftly respond to emergency situations. I am so glad I could support Clinton’s first responders and residents with this funding for an upgraded facility, and I appreciate Deputy Fire Chief Travis Leary for sharing these plans with me,” said Senator Collins.

    Senator Collins has secured nearly $45 million in Congressionally Directed Spending for 28 fire stations across the State of Maine since Fiscal Year 2022.

    Following the tour of the fire station, Senator Collins headed to Augusta to visit the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine (SAM) Outdoor Education Center, where she met with SAM Executive Director David Trahan as well as local Scout members Jacob and Elizabeth Blais. Both Jacob and Elizabeth are working toward becoming Eagle Scouts, and as part of Jacob’s Eagle Scout project, he designed and built a kiosk with maps and information about local plants for the Center.

    “I was so pleased to talk with Jacob and Elizabeth, Scouts in Troop 603 in Augusta. Organizations like Scouting America and the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine do an excellent job conserving our environment and teaching future generations about Maine’s rich outdoor heritage,” said Senator Collins.

    In Fiscal Year 2023, Senator Collins secured $700,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending to support SAM’s efforts to collaborate with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on research related to expanded hatchery production.

  • Coco Gauff finds groove after forgetting rackets, Medvedev exits French Open

    Source: Government of India

    Source: Government of India (4)

    Coco Gauff forgot to take her rackets to the court but reminded her rivals of her French Open title ambitions with a commanding first-round win, while Daniil Medvedev was unable to string out his journey beyond the first round on a wet and windy Tuesday.

    Three-times champion Novak Djokovic overcame the difficult conditions to begin his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title with a victory after last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev got off to a flier in his hunt for an elusive maiden major trophy.

    Former Roland Garros runner-up Gauff provided some early comic relief as the second seed grinned sheepishly and showed her empty bag to her entourage, who scampered to reunite her with her equipment before she beat Olivia Gadecki 6-2 6-2.

    “The most important thing is to play with a racket,” said Gauff, who jokingly posted a photo on X later of a to-do list that had ‘put tennis rackets in bag’ unchecked.

    “It probably relaxed me going into the match, because it was such a funny thing. I’m just happy to get through. I’ll remember my rackets next time.”

    The Madrid and Rome finalist made up for a slightly delayed start to her match on Court Philippe Chatrier by easing through the first three games and wrapped up the opening set with a brave hold after dropping serve earlier.

    There was no looking back from there as Gauff tightened her grip on the contest and booked a clash with Tereza Valentova.

    On the men’s side, third seed Zverev sealed a comprehensive 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory over Learner Tien, avenging a defeat by the 19-year-old American in Acapulco earlier this year.

    Medvedev was not as efficient, losing eight consecutive games after taking a 3-1 lead in the opening set against Cameron Norrie and his frustrations boiled over in a series of animated gestures towards his team during a 7-5 6-3 4-6 1-6 7-5 loss.

    Norrie enjoyed every bit of the Russian’s meltdown.

    “Every time I played Daniil, he’s never snapped. He’s never said anything. He’s just completely locked in and chops me every time,” Norrie said.

    “It was quite nice in the first set to see him freaking out and talking to his box and trying to look for answers.”

    Fellow Briton Jack Draper found all the answers after dropping the opening set against Mattia Bellucci, as the world number five prevailed 3-6 6-1 6-4 6-2 after 17th seed Andrey Rublev kept his cool to beat Lloyd Harris 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-1.

    SPIRITS LIFTED

    Earlier, Dusan Lajovic crashed out 6-2 6-4 7-6(4) to Kazakh lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko while Laslo Djere fell 6-3 6-4 7-6(6) to Australian ninth seed Alex De Minaur, much to the disappointment of the Serbian fans.

    Sixth seed Djokovic lifted their spirits, though, as the 38-year-old wrestled Mackenzie McDonald into submission with a dominant 6-3 6-3 6-3 win on the same court where he captured singles gold at the Paris Olympics last year.

    “It’s great to return here a year later. I don’t know how many Grand Slams I have left but this is special,” he said.

    “I feel good and here even better because I can relive the Olympics. Today it was a solid match throughout all three sets.

    “I know I can play at a better level than today but I’m satisfied. There’s the chance to make further history and that is the biggest motivation to work, improve and be here.”

    It was the end of the road for Bulgarian veteran Grigor Dimitrov after the 16th seed pulled up with a left thigh injury during his match against Ethan Quinn to exit a fourth straight Grand Slam due to retirement.

    In the women’s draw, former runner-up Sofia Kenin advanced to the second round after a 6-3 6-1 win over French number one Varvara Gracheva while Hailey Baptiste beat 2023 semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia 4-6 6-3 6-1.

    Former world number one Victoria Azarenka became the oldest woman in the professional era since 1968 to win a singles Grand Slam main-draw match with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline, after the 35-year-old dished out a double bagel to Yanina Wickmayer.

    Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, breezed past Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-4 6-4 while sixth seed Mirra Andreeva beat Cristina Bucsa 6-4 6-3 to underline her title credentials after a run to last year’s semi-finals.

    Andreeva’s idol Ons Jabeur suffered a shock first round defeat by Magdalena Frech on Court Simonne Mathieu, as the twice quarter-finalist went down 7-6(4) 6-0.

  • MIL-OSI Security: Roanoke Man, Who Posed as Baseball Prospect, Pleads Guilty to Failure to Register, False Statement Charges

    Source: Office of United States Attorneys

    ROANOKE, Va. – A Roanoke, Virginia man, who used burner phones to pose as officials from both Major and Minor League baseball teams, pled guilty today in federal court to failing to register as a convicted sex offender and making false statements.

    Janike Dunbar Holt, 29, a.k.a. “Nike,” a.k.a. “Janike Tagovailoa” a.k.a. “Keanu Tagovailoa,” a.k.a. “Trey Tagovailoa,” pled guilty today to one count of failure to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act and one count of making a false statement to law enforcement.

    According to court documents, in August 2018, Holt was convicted of four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child in North Carolina after he had sexual relations with a fifteen-year-old. Holt was released from custody in October of 2018 and, after initially complying with his required sex offender registration requirements, Holt failed to report an address change in June 2022.

    In March 2022, Holt began dating a woman (Individual 1) who had a minor child (Minor A). Holt was not the father of Minor A, but he told others that he was. In addition, Holt was asking several other women for money that he claimed was to support Minor A, to visit Minor A, or to help obtain custody of Minor A. However, Holt did not actually use the money for these stated purposes or otherwise provide this money to Individual A or Minor A.

    Around October 2022, Holt began dating Individual 2. Holt falsely told Individual 2 that he had a child (Minor A) and got Individual 2 to give him $65 for diapers for the child and for gas to go visit her.  Individual 2 gave Holt access to her bank accounts, and Holt stole $5,000 from her. Individual 2 was able recover this money from her bank.

    At other times in 2022, Holt also dated Individual 3 and Individual 5. While living with Individual 3, Holt stole at least three checks from her, which he subsequently made out to himself. Holt filled out one of these checks and asked Individual 5 to cash it for him. Holt made out another of these stolen checks for $225,000, with the memo line reading “Lawsuit Refund.” The check was never cashed. Holt later made out another of these stolen checks for $75,000, with the memo line reading “Law-suit settlement.” He asked Individuals 7 and 8 to cash this check for him, but they refused.

    On February 6, 2023, Holt asked a friend to drive him from North Carolina to Virginia, where he was planning to move. Holt lived with his brother in Roanoke for a few days before moving in with a new girlfriend, Individual 6. Holt continued living with his new girlfriend until March 14, 2023. While living in Roanoke, Holt never registered as a sex offender in Virginia, despite being required to under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

    Despite living with Individual 6, Holt also spent a significant amount of time at a house where the mother of two of his brother’s children (Individual 7) lived with her mother (Individual 8). Holt falsely told his brother, Individual 7, and Individual 8 that he had been recruited to play for a Major League Baseball team. Holt used burner phones to send text messages to his brother, Individual 7, and Individual 8 while pretending to be actual individuals affiliated with a Major League Baseball team and a Minor League Baseball team. Holt used the names of these individuals without their knowledge.

    Holt told his brother, Individual 6, Individual 7, and Individual 8 that they would all be moving as a result of his purported Major League Baseball career. In preparation, and at Holt’s urging, Individual 7 and Individual 8 sold some of their vehicles and gave Holt the proceeds. Holt also attempted to sell Individual 6’s vehicle without her knowledge.

    On March 14, 2023, Holt was arrested on a warrant out of North Carolina. While being interviewed by a deputy marshal, Holt made several false statements, including that he had a child (Minor A), that he had not been living in Roanoke, Virginia but had been driving back and forth between Roanoke and North Carolina every other day, and that his probation officer was aware that he was habitually traveling between Roanoke and North Carolina.

    The United States Marshals Service is investigating the case.

    Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Scheff is prosecuting the case.

  • MIL-OSI USA: Governor Kehoe Announces Special Session to Address Disaster Relief for Missourians, Tax Incentives for Economic Development, and Budget Appropriations

    MAY 27, 2025

     — Today, during a press conference at the Missouri State Capitol, Governor Mike Kehoe announced that he has issued an official call for a special session aimed at providing resources to families affected by recent severe storm systems, driving economic development through a tax incentive program, and making critical budget appropriations that will impact Missourians across the state.

    The General Assembly will convene for the First Extraordinary Session of the First Regular Session in Jefferson City on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. to begin considering Governor Kehoe’s priorities.

    “We are proud of all that the General Assembly accomplished during the regular legislative session, but there is still work left to be done,” said Governor Kehoe. “We call on legislators to use this special session as a rare opportunity to support our vulnerable neighbors in their time of need, drive economic development, and make transformative investments in our state. This work is too important to leave unfinished.”

    Several severe storm systems have impacted the State of Missouri over the recent months, resulting in loss of life as well as significant damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. Governor Kehoe’s call for a special session includes legislation to assist Missouri families impacted by recent severe storm systems in areas included in a request for presidential disaster declaration filed by the Governor. The call includes:

    To help retain major sports teams in Missouri, Governor Kehoe is calling on the General Assembly to enact legislation establishing economic development tools for athletic and entertainment facility projects of professional sports franchises through the Show Me Sports Investment Act. The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are Missouri’s teams that drive billions of dollars in economic activity through tourism, job creation, and small businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail. The impact of retaining these teams includes:

    • The Kansas City Chiefs contribute $575 million annually in economic value and over 4,500 jobs in Jackson County alone, bringing the State of Missouri nearly $30 million in annual tax revenue.
    • A new Royals ballpark district is expected to support 8,400 jobs and generate $1.2 billion in economic output annually.

    Governor Kehoe’s call also includes:

    • Enacting legislation to extend the sunset date on tax credits for amateur sporting events.
    • Appropriating $25 million for the University of Missouri for the planning, design, and construction of the Radioisotope Science Center at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR).

    Headline: Governor Stein Proclaims May 25-31 North Carolina Heat Awareness Week

    Governor Stein Proclaims May 25-31 North Carolina Heat Awareness Week
    lsaito

    Raleigh, NC

    Earlier this month, Governor Josh Stein proclaimed May 25-31 as North Carolina Heat Awareness Week to bring attention to key programs that keep North Carolinians safe and to bring awareness to ongoing climate warming trends.

    “North Carolina state agencies and community partners are working to make sure North Carolinians have the resources they need to stay safe when temperatures soar,” said Governor Josh Stein. “North Carolina is preparing for another summer of record heat. While you are outside this summer, please take the necessary steps to prevent heat exhaustion and illness.”

    Communities across the state are encouraged to prepare for high summer temperatures. Several communities across North Carolina experienced their hottest days ever recorded in 2024, and 2025 is likely to continue this trend. There were 4,688 heat-related illness emergency department visits in the summer of 2024, a nearly 20% increase from 2023.

    The state Resiliency Program has provided critical support to North Carolina communities as they prepare and develop plans for reducing local impacts of extreme heat. Last year, the program launched the Heat Action Plan Toolkit in collaboration with NCDHHS, North Carolina State Climate Office, and Duke University Heat Policy Innovation Hub. The toolkit includes a template for creating a heat action plan, public outreach resources, checklists, and protocols that can be customized in advance of and during heat wave events. In December 2024, the Resiliency Program and North Carolina State Climate Office partnered to launch the Planning for Extreme Heat Cohort to help North Carolina communities develop local heat action plans. In addition, the NC Resilience Exchange website provides a complete collection of resources to help local and state leaders easily find climate resilience information relevant to their area.

    Budget and staffing cuts at federal agencies like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have put programs that support heat safety at risk, including the state heat health alert system, the Heat-Related Illness Surveillance System, and a farmworker health training program.

    “Our environmental health and epidemiology teams conduct critical work every day to inform North Carolinians of potential health effects of extreme heat, as well as ensure resources are available for those who experience heat-related illness,” said Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. “Cuts to these services would be detrimental to the health and well-being of the more than 11 million people who call North Carolina home.”

    Among weather-related hazards, extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of deaths each year. Recognizing the symptoms of heat illness is key to preventing serious complications, including death. Some signs and symptoms include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, racing or weak pulse, dizziness, headache, fainting, and nausea or vomiting.

    While heat-related illnesses can affect anyone regardless of age or physical condition, outdoor workers, infants and children, older adults, pregnant people, athletes, low-income individuals and people with underlying health conditions are at a disproportionate risk of experiencing adverse health effects.

    Additionally, NCDHHS Operation Fan Heat Relief is underway through Oct. 31, 2025. Visit DHHS’s website to see if you qualify for a free fan for the hot summer months.

  • MIL-OSI Global: Why carrying spuds and playing sudoku could be good measures of your overall health

    Source: The Conversation – UK – By Catherine Norton, Associate Professor Sport & Exercise Nutrition, University of Limerick

    simona pilolla 2/Shutterstock

    While ageing is inevitable, ageing well is something we can influence. It’s not just about the number of candles on your birthday cake – it’s whether you’ve got the puff to blow them out, the balance to carry the cake and the memory to remember why you’re celebrating.

    As we age, our bodies change. Muscle mass shrinks, bones weaken, reaction times slow. But that doesn’t mean we’re all destined for a future of walking frames and daytime TV.

    Ageing well isn’t about staying wrinkle-free – it’s about staying independent, mobile, mentally sharp and socially connected. In gerontology, there’s a saying: we want to add life to years, not just years to life. That means focusing on quality – being able to do what you love, move freely, think clearly and enjoy time with others.

    There’s no one-size-fits-all definition, but some simple home tests can give you a good idea. No fancy lab required – just a toothbrush, a stopwatch and a sense of humour.

    Balance

    One fun (and surprisingly useful) way to test your balance is to stand on one leg while brushing your teeth. If you can do this for 30 seconds or more (eyes open), that’s a great sign of lower-body strength, coordination, and postural stability.

    A 2022 study found that people who couldn’t balance on one leg for ten seconds had an 84% higher risk of death over a median follow-up of seven years compared than those who could. As such, balance is like a superpower for healthy ageing — it reduces falls, supports mobility, and can be improved at any age.

    Grip

    Grip strength is more than just opening jars. It’s a powerful indicator of overall health, predicting heart health, cognitive function and even mortality risk.

    Research shows that for every 5kg decrease in grip strength, the risk of death from all causes rose by 16%.

    You can test grip strength using a hand-dynamometer (many gyms or clinics have them), or simply take note of everyday tasks – is opening bottles, carrying groceries, or using tools becoming harder?

    Floor-to-feet feat

    Can you sit on the floor and stand up without using your hands? This test is a true measure of your lower-body strength and flexibility, which are essential for daily activities and reducing the risk of falls. If you can do it, you’re in great shape.

    Read more:
    Why sitting down – and getting back up – might be the most important health test you do today

    If it’s too tough, try the sit-to-stand test. Using a chair (no arms),see how many sit-to-stand transitions you can do in 30 seconds. This task is a good measure of lower limb function, balance and muscle strength, it can also predict people at risk of falls and cardiovascular issues.

    Mental sharpness

    Cognitive function can be measured in all sorts of complex ways, but some basic home tests are surprisingly telling. Try naming as many animals as you can in 30 seconds. Fewer than 12 might indicate concern; more than 18 is a good sign.

    Try spelling “world” backwards or recalling a short list of three items after a few minutes. This skill is an important strategy to enhance memory in older adults. Challenge yourself with puzzles, Sudoku, or learning a new skill. These kinds of “verbal fluency” and memory recall tests are simple ways to spot early changes in brain health – but don’t panic if you blank occasionally. Everyone forgets where they left their keys sometimes.

    Lifestyle matters

    There’s no magic bullet to ageing well – but, if one existed, it would probably be a combination of exercise, diet, sleep and social connections.

    Some of the best-studied strategies include:

    Daily movement: walking, resistance training, swimming or tai chi keep your muscles and bones strong and support balance and heart health.

    Healthy eating: a Mediterranean-style diet — rich in whole grains, fruit, vegetables, fish, olive oil and nuts – is linked to better brain and heart health.

    Sleep: seven to nine hours of quality sleep support memory, immunity and mood.

    Connection: some research suggests that loneliness is as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Stay engaged, join a club, volunteer, or just pick up the phone to a friend.

    If you can balance on one leg while brushing your teeth, carry a bag of potatoes up the stairs, and name 20 animals under pressure, then you’re doing very well. If not (yet), that’s OK, these are skills you can build over time. Ageing well means taking a proactive approach to health: making small, consistent choices that lead to better mobility, clearer thinking and richer social connections down the line.

    So tonight, give the one-leg toothbrush challenge a go. Your future self might thank you, especially if they still have all their teeth.

  • MIL-OSI Russia: Sobyanin met with entrepreneurs participating in the Made in Moscow project

    Translation. Region: Russian Federal

    Source: Moscow Government – Government of Moscow –

    The flagship site of the Green Market program is operating on Bolotnaya Square “Made in Moscow”. Sergei Sobyanin met there with representatives of small and medium-sized businesses – participants in the capital’s “Made in Moscow” program.

    According to the Mayor of Moscow, the departure of foreign brands from the Russian market has given the capital’s entrepreneurs additional opportunities to promote their brands and products. The city, in turn, provides businesses with a wide range of various support measures that allow companies to actively develop, improve their products and present them to a wide audience, including abroad.

    “It’s not just about Western brands, but about the fact that Moscow as a whole has a lot of competition. There are about a million small and medium-sized businesses registered in Moscow, imagine the volume – millions of workers, trillions of turnover. And this is, in fact, such a powerful competitive environment, from which the best ones grow, who not only trade in Moscow, not only in Russia, but also throughout the world. It is, of course, wonderful that we have survived all the difficulties, the difficulties with Covid, with sanctions. You have not only survived, but are developing, demonstrating a high level of your work. This is, of course, great. I thank you and wish you success,” said the Mayor of Moscow.

    The head of the press service of the capital’s cosmetics company, Tasha Rydvanova, in turn thanked Sergei Sobyanin for the opportunities provided. According to her, thanks to the support of the Moscow Export Center, they supply their products to more than 20 countries around the world. The company also takes part in the city program “Made in Moscow”.

    According to Irina Amosova, co-founder of one of the capital’s companies, over the past two years, capital entrepreneurs have created 33 thousand new brands. Currently, the top 10 cosmetics brands are Russian. This became possible, among other things, thanks to the city’s support, in particular grants to reimburse the costs of purchasing equipment. Now their company exports its products to 13 countries, including Vietnam and Türkiye.

    “The Made in Moscow program, which was launched in 2022 and has already become a flagship in the field of supporting Moscow manufacturers, helps promote our brands. The program unites companies producing goods in more than 35 categories. Their products and services are in demand both in the capital and far beyond its borders,” the Moscow Mayor wrote in

    on your telegram channel.

    Currently, more than seven thousand companies are participants in the program — representatives of small, medium and large businesses. The main objectives of the program are to promote the growth of Moscow consumer product brands, increase customer loyalty and enter new markets.

    “Green Market” on Bolotnaya Square

    May 25, 2025 as part of the project “Summer in Moscow” The Green Market of the Made in Moscow program has opened. A total of 12 art pavilions with products from local brands will be presented at the tourist sites.

    The flagship site is located on Bolotnaya Square. In total, over 30 thousand products are presented there.

    An important task of the market is to support participants of the special military operation (SVO) and residents of new regions. Part of the proceeds from the sale of goods will be sent to the charity fund “People’s Front. Everything for Victory!”

    The meeting with the Mayor of Moscow was attended by entrepreneurs representing such Moscow brands as:

    — Veter Sport (founded by Anton Ivanov) — produces custom-designed equipment for the local cycling sports community. With the city’s support, the company was able to purchase equipment and launch a new production line. The product catalog has three main areas: cycling, running, and triathlon equipment;

    — Silver Spoon (founder — Tamara Pularia) — produces stylish and high-quality clothing for children and teenagers. Thanks to a preferential loan provided by the city, they were able to scale their own retail network;

    — Maneken Brand (founded by Sergey Alimov) — produces designer clothing and accessories. In 2025, the company became one of the first participants in the preferential lending program secured by intellectual property rights and was able to scale up production;

    — Como Casa (founder — Mikhail Grachev) — produces designer furniture at its own production facility in Moscow. The company opened after the departure of major foreign brands in 2022. Participation in city events, including Moscow Interior and Design Week, allowed it to increase its revenue several times;

    — Climtcosmetics (founder — Alexander Soshilov) — produces decorative cosmetics. In 2024, the company actively participated in the Made in Moscow programs. Thanks to the city’s support, the brand strengthened its position on the market and from a startup started by four participants, it turned into a company with 25 employees;

    — “Akademiya T” (CEO — Enver Tokayev) — an innovative research and production company, whose main activity is the release of new high-tech sports and therapeutic nutrition products, as well as research and development in the field of nutrition and biotechnology. The brand’s catalog includes vitamins, concentrates, and useful supplements. The company is the official supplier of products for the Russian national teams, and is implementing its project in the special economic zone “Technopolis Moscow”;

    — SportDots (founded by Kirill Orlov) — produces smart clothing for professional and amateur athletes. The items have integrated flat elastic elements — dots — that help increase endurance, thereby improving the effectiveness of training. The company participated in the Made in Moscow market at the 2025 Moscow Half Marathon in the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, which increased brand awareness;

    — Ecolatier (owner — Daria Ostromenskaya) — produces everyday care cosmetics based on natural and organic components. The company regularly participates in Beauty Week and other major specialized exhibitions. With the support of the Moscow Government, the brand has increased sales of its products;

    — Vitmins (CEO — Andrey Garmashov) — produces vitamins for sports and life. Thanks to the programs of the Moscow Venture Fund, the company attracted additional financing, which allowed it to increase its staff and establish production.

    Moscow brands are increasing production and creating new lines of clothing and accessories

    The main pavilion has a master class area where Moscow entrepreneurs conduct training sessions with children and adults. Market guests can use the fitting rooms and relax in the food court on the second floor.

    In addition, the flagship site has a stage for educational and leisure events, including lectures, performances by artists and musicians, prize draws from local brands and presentations of new products. There is a rollerdrome for young visitors. The decoration of the Green Market on Bolotnaya Square is a miracle tree, which attracts attention in the evenings with a bright light show.

    The work of the “Green Market” “Made in Moscow” will last until September 7, 2025. Details can be found on the website.

    Development of small and medium-sized businesses in Moscow

    Entrepreneurship is one of the key sectors of the Moscow economy. Small and medium-sized businesses today are more than 927 thousand enterprises, which is 14 percent of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Russia. In 2024, they provided 1.2 trillion rubles in tax revenues (27 percent) to the city budget and more than a third of the capital’s employment (almost 40 percent – 3.4 million people).

    The stable growth of SMEs is indicated by the indicators of transition to larger categories. Thus, last year about 11 thousand Moscow companies exceeded the threshold values of their category and moved from microenterprises to small, from small to medium, from medium to large enterprises. This is 40 percent more than the year before (7.9 thousand).

    The largest sectors in terms of the number of SMEs are trade, professional activities (science, research), real estate transactions and construction.

    To accommodate small and medium-sized innovative businesses, 47 technology parks have been created in Moscow, in which 2.2 thousand companies work – this is 74.2 thousand jobs. In terms of the level of development of innovative infrastructure, the Russian capital ranks first in Europe.

    The Moscow Innovation Cluster (MIC) provides cooperation with the main participants of the innovation ecosystem. The cluster’s digital platform i.moscow https://i.moscow/ has more than 50 electronic services for business development and scaling. Enterprises from 87 regions of Russia are registered on the platform, and the number of services they have received has exceeded 125 thousand. Thanks to i.moscow services, companies have received support from the city in the amount of more than 19.3 billion rubles and attracted over 46.6 billion rubles in investments. With the participation of MIC, every second transaction on the venture market of the capital is carried out and 37 percent of Moscow patents are registered. With its help, businesses have implemented 18.4 thousand innovative projects, including six thousand in cooperation with other participants and partners of the cluster.

    In 2024, on the instructions of Sergei Sobyanin, a strategy for the development of entrepreneurship in the capital was developed. The key objectives are to increase the share of the technology sector in the city’s economy and support the growth and efficiency of the capital’s business. These priorities reflect the main goals of national projects in the economic sphere.

    As part of the implementation of the strategy, the Moscow Government provides comprehensive support to small and medium-sized businesses.

    According to the results of 2024, every 11th business was covered by various support measures – more than 80 thousand entrepreneurs received over 300 thousand services.

    Moscow is the first region of Russia to launch regional preferential lending programs in 2020, which are the most popular measure of financial support for SMEs. Over the past period, Moscow entrepreneurs have concluded over 37 thousand loan agreements, which allowed them to attract more than 380 billion rubles in additional funding for business development.

    Another effective measure of financial support is guaranteeing credit obligations, which solves the problem of a lack of own collateral.

    The guarantees of the Moscow Fund for Assistance to Lending cover up to 70 percent of the loan amount, in total – up to 100 million rubles. Moscow entrepreneurs have been provided with over 20 thousand guarantees, under which they attracted financing in the amount of more than 392 billion rubles.

    In total, more than 15 financial support measures are available to entrepreneurs.

    Non-financial support measures are also in high demand. They are aimed at increasing entrepreneurial literacy: free consultations, educational and business events, as well as electronic services.

    2025 World Snooker Championship sees $1.71 million sponsorship amid digital surge and commercial shift, reveals GlobalData

    Posted in Sport

    The 2025 World Snooker Championship highlighted the evolving commercial landscape of the sport, generating an estimated $1.71 million in sponsorship revenue despite a 20% drop in naming rights value. A last-minute title deal with British workflow automation software brand Halo and record-breaking digital viewership reflect strong audience demand, while growing interest from China and Saudi Arabia points to a potentially global shift in the tournament’s future, reveals GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

    GlobalData’s report, “Post Event Analysis – World Snooker Championship 2025,” revealed that the tournament saw a total prize money of £2.395 million ($3.196 million). The World Snooker Championship boasts the highest prize money of any professional snooker tournament worldwide

    Olivia Snooks, Sport Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “This decrease in naming rights revenue compared to 2024 is partly down to the fact that the deal was signed on the eve of the tournament, reducing the scope exposure and activation, as well as part of a continuing pattern across a sport that is steadily moving away from vice title sponsorship.”

    The 2025 World Snooker Championship set a record with 29 million streams on the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport Website, and BBC Sport app, reflecting a 25% increase from the previous year. The event’s cumulative television audience across BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC Four reached 12.6 million viewers. The final, broadcast on BBC Two, attracted a peak audience of 3 million viewers.

    Snooks continues: “At the beginning of 2025, the World Snooker Tour renewed its long-running rights deal with the UK public-service broadcaster BBC until 2032. The five-year deal extension ensures that the World Snooker Tour’s flagship ‘Triple Crown’ events remain free-to-air across the UK.”

    Ticket prices for the 2025 World Snooker Championship depended on the day and the session. The face value of tickets for Round 1, played between April 19 and April 24, 2025, started as low as £45 ($60). The most expensive tickets which were able to be purchased for face value were the final session of the 5 May, which saw tickets for the Century Club priced at £170 ($947). The Crucible Theatre has a seating capacity of 980, which limits ticket sales and revenue. The tournament schedule included three sessions daily and the Crucible achieved full attendance for every session of the tournament.

    The future of the Crucible Theatre as the venue for the World Snooker Championship remains in doubt. The agreement to host the tournament at the Sheffield theater is set to expire in 2027. The competitions longstanding association with Sheffield may be subject to change as China has engaged in repeated discussions to become a potential host, reflecting the rise in Chinese participants on the tour. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is expanding its involvement in snooker and is poised to host its inaugural ranking event, the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, in August.

    Snooks concludes: “The 2025 World Snooker Championship reaffirmed the sport’s enduring appeal while signaling a shift in its commercial dynamics. As digital viewership breaks records and non-traditional markets like China and Saudi Arabia express growing interest, the tournament faces a pivotal juncture, balancing its heritage with global expansion to sustain long-term commercial growth and fan engagement.”
